I don't have a link yet but Nick Barnett has signed a contract extension with the Packers.

I plan on dropping Abdul Hodge in Zealots and this probably keeps AJ Hawk out of elite fantasy LB range.

that statement makes no sense!!!

if a guy gets more money it makes other players worse.

what's the rationale????

I read somewhere that they might still move Barnett to SLB after he got him money.

i am still not 100% sold that he will remain in GB long term...that is unless there is a no trade clause in the contract which i am doubting there is

you cant drop hodge, you are trader jake...TRADE HIM

The big sticking point with Barnett was that he didn't want to move to SLB because it would hurt his future in terms of money if he went FA. This opens the door to move him to SLB and keep him happy... he got his contract. Now, Hodge will likely be a two down MLB, with Hawk and Barnett in the nickel package. Barnett's value goes down, Hodge's goes up but will be a third tier sort of FF LB, and Hawk remains about the same I think.

i would be curious to know how many tackles that barnett made on 3rd downs

trotter was basically a 2 down LBer that hovered around in the top 20...i think hodge could very well do the same but that is a best case scenario.

Trotter is a reasonable best case scenario if Hodge eventually earns a job inside of Barnett and Hawk. But Hodge was absolutely horrible (regardless of his pretty stat line) against Seattle last year. If he wasn't getting washed out of the play or taking a horrible angle to get to the play, he was missing the tackle. Shaun Alexander ran the ball 40 times in that game. Hodge made five solo tackles. Hawk made twice that, albeit many well past the LOS.

If Hodge can overcome his rookie issues, and that's entirely possible, he's still going to be a rough IDP value. There's almost no way he sees as much 3rd down time as Trotter did (close to 80% according to some estimates) over the past three seasons. It'll be pretty much a worst case scenario for a MLB in the Miami 4-3 -- no nickel duty and two OLB who rangy enough to pursue and vulture tackles past the LOS.

Maybe it's just a hunch, but I say buy low on Barnett.
I'd agree, but I think most Barnett owners will be in denial for a time.... they will hold out hope he can still be a stud. I think he sinks into the 20 to 40 category of LB's now, and most owners will insist he's a top 20.

why do you it takes Hawk Out of the elite range.. he had a very strong 2nd half w/ Barnet there.
Part of the reason I would keep Hawk out of elite dynasty LB status is because he will now be "fighting" Barnett for tackles. If Barnett had moved on after the 07' season I could see Hawk piling up better tackle numbers if a lesser NFL player like Hodge (or a veteran free agent) were manning the middle for Green Bay. This contract extension assures owners that Hawk and Barnett will be lining up at LB for the foreseeable future.Hawk will probably see similar numbers to last season. Slightly lower tackle numbers but more "big plays" like forced fumbles and sacks, primary due to his progression as an NFL player. More instincts and less thinking about his assignments.Barnett missed the Seattle game and played the last five with a broken hand. He had a huge wrap on his arm that restricted his movement, kept him from getting off of blockers very well, and he (obviosuly) had very little chance of making a pick. It turned him into an average linebacker over the final 6 1/2 games. Number wise it wasn't bad but watching him on the field he was close to making some big plays and just couldn't get the job done as well as he did before the injury.I'd bet on a production uptick for Barnett over last season. Slightly higher tackle numbers and a better chance of making big plays now that he's healthy again.Abdul Hodge's limited coverage skills will keep him from ever being an elite fantasy LB, but if he is starting in the middle he's worthy of a roster spot. Unless that happens he's a fantasy free agent and with Barnett resigning I'm betting against him seeing MLB action anytime soon. We'll see.
