certainly he might get doubled more and Eli loses his security blanket, I think Mario Manningham will be the big benefactor and Nicks will be Nicks
If the Giants wanted to get Nicks 200 yards receiving against Dallas, they could do it.Dallas isn't good enough on D to make anyone "take a hit."I'm going the opposite. Nicks has faced single coverage all year. That is about to change, for at least until Smith comes back. His numbers will take a hit, and Manningham will reap the benefits...
This.Is Dallas still rolling out 4 safeties as their starting defensive backfield? Manningham AND Nicks might both get 200 yards this week.If the Giants wanted to get Nicks 200 yards receiving against Dallas, they could do it.Dallas isn't good enough on D to make anyone "take a hit."
he is already a top 2 wr but this just adds more to his targets but I think it benefits Manningham the most because Nicks was already wr 1 on the nygper rotoworldIs this good, bad or indifferent for Nicks owners? I say he gets even more targets and is good enough to beat the increased attention.
You think teams have doubled Smith instead of Nicks?Smith is a good receiver, don't get me wrong, but defenses have absolutely treated Nicks as the #1 receiver in this offense.Unless DC's now feel like they can give him the Brandon Marshall treatment and throw 3 players at him, I don't think this changes Nicks output in any respect.I'm going the opposite. Nicks has faced single coverage all year. That is about to change, for at least until Smith comes back. His numbers will take a hit, and Manningham will reap the benefits...
Cruz is on IR.kevin boss? VICTOR CRUZ!?!?!?

Gilbride the offensive coordinator said this about smith..........Kevin Gilbride said that Smith allowed the Giants more versatility since he demanded defenses to commit to cover him.You think teams have doubled Smith instead of Nicks?Smith is a good receiver, don't get me wrong, but defenses have absolutely treated Nicks as the #1 receiver in this offense.I'm going the opposite. I am a Nicks owner and this is not remotely accurate. Nicks has been in single coverage almost the entire season. Most of his touchdowns have come while in single coverage. Many times I have been amazed at the defensive attention given to Smith while Nicks has been left in single coverage against a nickle corner or even a safety. Go watch the Nicks highlights from the Cowboys game, for example, and you'll see what I mean. You think teams have doubled Smith instead of Nicks?Smith is a good receiver, don't get me wrong, but defenses have absolutely treated Nicks as the #1 receiver in this offense.Unless DC's now feel like they can give him the Brandon Marshall treatment and throw 3 players at him, I don't think this changes Nicks output in any respect.
Nicks is the real deal, and you are correct that he is a beast and will still be good with or without Smith in there. But single coverage > double coverage no matter any way you slice it, and it could effect his stats somewhat for the time being. The fact that they have a pretty ace running game also might be a reason that he draws single coverage. I mean, let's be real...Steve Smith is not the reason why Nicks is a stud. Like any other stud, double coverage is not going to change that, if they decide that is the way to go.
I'm starting to wonder if there's more to this than what people care to admit. It's not like Nicks hasn't had some dud games, and can't be shut down. Also, is Eli really the type of QB to force the ball into double coverage if Dallas does blanket Nicks? Maybe everyone is right, and Nicks will get 12 targets 6-7 catches and 100+, but I'm wondering if maybe 4 or 5 of his targets actually get spread around more with Smith out and additional coverage rolled his way. It's speculative of course and like somebody else mentioned, the Dallas secondary isn't the strongest, but I'm not sure that the idea of Nicks having a few more lower scoring games should be waived off so easily. What does everyone expect his final stats to be this weekend?EDIT - I am a Nicks owner, so obviously I'm hoping I'm wrong.Nicks is the real deal, and you are correct that he is a beast and will still be good with or without Smith in there. Manningham may very well be as good as Smith but it is a fact that they are not the same type of player. While Smith is purely a middle of the field, possession WR, Manningham is an outside, down the field big play threat. Not sure how Ds will treat this but I do see Boss and the RBs getting more play in the passing game. The Giants do not have another player like Smith.I think you guys are over thinking this...Manningham is just as good as Smith, in my opinion, so I am not quite seeing where the coverage is going to change all that much. Plus, we are not dealing with an idiot qb who cannot adjust to new situations.
I'm not sure what you're asking or implying, but Nicks is seeing a lot more double coverage than in previous games when Smith was attracting that coverage.footballnerd said:Steve who?

Of course. That's not in question. However, as a Nicks owner, single coverage is better than double coverage no matter how you slice it. Here's hoping Smith makes it back soon. That's true but this guy can still produce well without the Smith, he also had a 60 yd TD called back in this game due to holdingI'm not sure what you're asking or implying, but Nicks is seeing a lot more double coverage than in previous games when Smith was attracting that coverage.footballnerd said:Steve who?

That was painful. Probably lost in two leagues on that call. There was a hold there, but it had no effect on the play so I think it would have been completely acceptable to keep the flag in the pocket. That's true but this guy can still produce well without the Smith, he also had a 60 yd TD called back in this game due to holding
If Manningham puts up 10 catches a game for 100 yards and a TD, it won't be long before they aren't bracketing Nicks anymore(which I'm not certain they were doing that much anyway.)And as said, even if they were, he was still probably a stupid penalty and a dropped pass away from around 160+ yards and at least one TD. If he can do that while bracketed, then there's nothing to worry about.Guy is a stud. If folks think Steve Smith was keeping him non-bracketed they're nuts.Of course. That's not in question. Meanwhile I'll take Manningham's great production while Nicks gets the extra attention. This brings up a bigger debate about WR production. What's generally better; to be the only great WR on a team (Johnson in Houston, Fitz right now in AZ, Roddy in ATL, Calvin in Detroit) or to be part of a great duo/trio (Moss/Welker couple years ago, Fitz/Boldin for a couple years in AZ, Harrison/Wayne, Ward/Holmes in Pit)?I think there are guys where it doesn't really matter. As long as they get the targets, the production comes. In fact, part of what makes Roddy and Andre Johnson so consistent over the last couple years is that they get a ton of balls their way. Rarely do you see the QB go to another target because there really isn't a good #2. (except for Walter occasionally in HOU).I know it's been 1 1/2 years, and I'm not saying Nicks is in the same tier as Roddy/Johnson/Johnson/Wayne... but he may just be that good, where bracket coverage and double teams won't hinder production. Of course, it's an academic argument if he and Smith stay in NY for years to come.If Manningham puts up 10 catches a game for 100 yards and a TD, it won't be long before they aren't bracketing Nicks anymore(which I'm not certain they were doing that much anyway.)And as said, even if they were, he was still probably a stupid penalty and a dropped pass away from around 160+ yards and at least one TD. Wow. Nice twist of the words. That's pretty much what I didn't say. I said they leave Nicks in single coverage. It was actually a topic during the MNF telecast. Gruden and Jaws were talking about how teams "keep leaving Nicks in single coverage this season". I did a little film work myself, watched his TDs from this year, and they are right. There is no 2nd defender anywhere near him...You think teams have doubled Smith instead of Nicks?Smith is a good receiver, don't get me wrong, but defenses have absolutely treated Nicks as the #1 receiver in this offense.I'm going the opposite. Manningham's success only helps going forward. Teams can't focus too much on Hakeem or Mario will burn them.Bump Hicks.Manningham with 5 RZ targets this week, and Nicks only 1 for what it's worth. It will be interesting to see this week if this trend continues, especially with the news that Smith will be out a little longer than originally thought.

Both Nicks and Manningham will be studs W/O Smith.Great offense, both WR's bring something different to the table.Any word on Smith's time table?
or not.bump Bradshaw
11 catches for 147 yards the past two weeks is no reason to be concerned. Nicks has left some plays on the field and the entire offense has sputtered at key times. With three tasty matchups on deck - Jacksonville, Washington, Minnesota - Nicks should have some big weeks.i think we're getting our answer. come back Smith!!!
