Are the Skins able to perform on Sunday??? This has to be brutal.....Football has to be the last thing on these guys minds. we will hear Sean would want us to play, etc. This can't be good, will the Skins step up and play for Sean, or understandibly not have their heads in the game?? Opinions??

I'm a life long Redskins fan, and at least right now, I could care less about the rest of the season. This is such a horrible unnecessary tragedy. I don't know how any of his teammates could even think or focus on their upcoming game. I know its their job, but I can't imagine doing it. This sucks so bad. :2cents:

The easiest way to grieve seems to throw yourself into distraction.

The Skins will play and probably will beat the Bills.

But personally I have soured on football.

Every player will react to this differently. Some will take inspiration and try to play the best they can, others will "go through the motions" due to grief or simple numbness. Joe Gibbs is very religious and there will be many prayers and a "moment of silence" on Sunday and 21 patches on all jerseys.

In 2005 when Wellington Mara died, the Giants played their best game of the season in tribute to him and he was just the owner. (I should know, the Skins were on the short end of that beat down).

I heard a baseball reporter on the radio this morning talking about how the Yankees reacted after Thurmun Munson was killed in a plane crash back in the early '80s. Some players just refused to play, while Bobby Mercer had a game winning hit. So you never know.

I'd guess that Vegas will take the Skins-Bills game off the board, but what do I know.

Fantasy wise - I'm hearing Portis was his closest friend on the team, will CP step it up for his buddy, or understandibly not have his head in the game ?? Opinions??

good question, I have him in one of my leagues. Honestly I couldn't fault the guy if he just takes a knee for the rest of the year. I believe he was Sean's closest friend on the team. This will be very hard to get over for him.

Portis is a very emotional guy, and Sean's best friend on the team. I don't know how he is going to be able to play this game. ;)

I don't think it's the easiest but the best, actually I think it's quite difficult.I'd expect alot of emotions and stupid penalties as mournful but not angry tempers flare unnecessarilyI have no expectations here, almost wish they could add an unplanned bye in but that's not possible.

I expect him to be "a wreck" at least initially. I'm hoping Friday or Saturday he seems better. Maybe then you guys can form a better opinion on this. I would imagine Gibbs tells him it's his choice to play or not. If the game isn't an "outlet" for him then it's trivial to him.

Different people react to grief in different ways. I think it is pretty much impossible to predict how this will influence how any particular player plays in their upcoming game.

I woke up Monday morning with the typical Monday Morning Blues after a loss. I was thinking how I'd just like to see them finish strong, but the playoffs didn't really matter because they weren't very good anyways. You know, the type of feeling I have every Monday morning after a loss. Ever since I heard about Taylor, and especially this morning after his death, I want them to make an improbable run.How will they play this weekend? Don't know. Either they'll struggle and be flat or they'll absolutely kick the Bills ###. I know one thing. I was going to sell my tickets to a friend for this weekend. I emailed him yesterday and told him I'm going. I'll have my Taylor jersey on and I really hope the place is packed and loud.

You know, dgreen, the worst thing about this is all the money Snyder will make by selling Taylor 21 jerseys and commerative coins and other crap like that as "rememberances" to all the Redskins fans who loved Sean as a player. They still sell Arrington 56 jerseys, don't they, for the exact same reason.

Honestly, I have seen guys step up huge when they have lost a loved one (parent, family member etc...). I do not think this will be different, and I expect that they will play well for him. Especially those that cared the most about him.

I have absolutely no doubt that Snyder will do all that he can for the family, and I respect him for that, so don't make me out to be a bad guy here. Flying CP, Vinny and himself down to Miami yesterday are evidence of that. But that said, I'm enough of a cynic about Snyder to know that he'll figure out a way to make a few bucks for himself and the team in the process. Selling lots of Taylor 21 jerseys is the first thing out of the box.

Seriously? People are actually worried about how this affects their players from a fantasy perspective? You want to wonder how the team will respond to this, I have no problems. If you want to wonder how your fantasy production will be because of this maybe you should keep it to yourself seeing how it doesn't really matter at this point. This was a pointless, stupid tragedy that I can only hope lead to athletes protecting themselves as well as they can as well as being a lesson on being careful what connections you make over the span of your life.

It's impossible to tell how individual players and a whole team will react. They could band together, they could fall apart. I wouldn't blame them if they just didn't show up and spent Sunday with their families. But that won't happen, there has to be something to focus on when things are bad, and a job is as good as anything.

Personally I don't care about the rest of the season any more. But if the game's on TV I'll likely turn it on, and maybe there will be a rousing moment that takes some of the sadness away.

that is why the thread title is what it was.I feel sorry for Taylor, his family, and loved ones....but life has to go on for the rest of us...and for some of us, money is on the line with this as well. Sure, its not alot of money to really be worried over...but I don't find it a bad thing that it is discussed on a message board by people who did not know Taylor outside of seeing him on TV with a football helmet on.

So its not?Im not saying money is more important than a player's life...and sorry if it sounds callous...but I don't know Sean Taylor, or his family or friends. As I said, I am sorry for his loss to anyone who loved the guy...but how is it different to me or anyone else who did not know him than anyone else dying?

This is a fantasy football message board...we are discussion a fantasy football impact of a situation...and like it or not...those situations effect people monetarily when it comes to FF.

Should we all get refunds because of this and not play the rest of a fantasy football season?

BTW...one league I was in did donate everything to relief funds after 9/11...so don't go there. Its a tragic death, but life has to go on for everyone else.

So you came into this thread just looking to give a big thumbs down?

FWIW, Id bet the house right now on the 'Skins winning at home this weekend against Buffalo. His teammates will remember him, rally in his memory, exploit the rookie Buffalo QB, and win one for their boy. Its the best thing his friends on the team can do to honor their guy, and without a doubt, their most gifted player.

I dont like to dive right into a game analysis so early following such a horrible loss. But for Redskins fans, buy your Sean Taylor's jerseys, remember the man for the heart he played the game with. And for the passion he used in leading that team on the field, by example. He was never a guy to speak out or up publicly, so most of us never got a good understanding of Sean Taylor. But you know he always left it all on the field. And as a fan, that's really all you can ever ask for from one of your guys. Remember him well and watch, support, and try and enjoy the rest of your season. Life goes on.

I am actually looking forward to the game Sunday. Not because I really care about football, but it will be an emotional day for the coaches, the players and the fans. I don't really care about football that much right now, but a win on Sunday would be a good thing, feeling and knowing that they did it for Sean more than they did to try to win a wild card spot in the NFC. Right now I would get more joy out of them winning for Sean than anything.

From a fantasy perspective, like fatness said, nobody knows how the team will react. Heck, its tough to predict how this team would react week to week regardless of circumstances.

THIS IS TRAGIC, VERY SAD.......but guess what, this is a Fantasy Fottball Forum, they will be playing football Sunday...It's PURE discussion, no ONE is discounting the TRADGEDY HERE......RELAX!!!!

[rant]

Not to be a tool, and I'm not going to say it won't be tough, but these are grown men who get paid a lot of money to work for the Redskins.

Would your work shut down for a week if somebody at your place of work died this way? I know mine wouldn't.

Sure it'd be rough as hell, but you show up and do your job.

[/rant]

Hijack aside, it is very sad that he died. Not trying to minimize his death at all here.

the games the rest of this season are insignificant. nobody will remember 2007 as anything other then the season that Sean Taylor died.

Whenever there is a tragedy like this one, there are always the thought police out there who want to chastise everyone who wants to discuss ANY aspect of the situation other than grieving for the victim. They are called "tasteless" and scolded by these "righteous" individuals who think we should be mourning with our brains devoid of thought.

It is tasteless to engage in blaming Taylor's past life for this crime. But other than that, topics like this one and other issues related to this subject should be perfectly fine for discussion.

I'm fine with a thread discussing how this may effect fantasy football as that is what this site is for. Anyone who wants to weep can go do it in the other thread. Nobody is disrespecting him in the thread, they are just looking for some fantasy football insight.

you're probably right for redskin fans...fans of other teams...im not so sure
exactlyquick...how many people remember what year Jerome Brown died (I know, it was not during the season). But until it was mentioned on the radio this morning by Golic, I had forgotten about it and had no clue what year it was.Fans of other teams will remember the season for more than Sean Taylor.

The Bills after the Kevin Everet injury might show you how certain teams react to this kind of thing.. Favre with his old man is another way

Whenever there is a tragedy like this one,
Just curious, but.........when was the last time there was another tragedy "like this one"? I can't remember the last time an NFL player was killed during the season, let alone being shot to death.
I can faintly remember when the Lion's WR Chuck Hughes died on the field (remember watching it on TV as a kid), but don't have any recollection as to how the team reacted....

Walter Payton wasn't active when he died, but young. The Bears beat Green Bay the next week (In the middle of the dark ages/Brett Favre's prime) when Bryan Robinson blocked a field goal as time expired. Sometimes teams do rally around tragedies, but no two people really react to something like this the same. I lost a really close friend of mine in 2006 and it definitely effected parts of my life that I just assumed I'd be able to do worry-free. I guess we'll see.

I'm a long time Bills fan, but I'm going to have a hard time this weekend not rooting for the Skins. I feel so badly for his family, friends, the Washington Redskin organization, and it's fans that I hope they are able to take some solace from winning a game in Taylor's memory.

I think Portis will dedicate this game to the memory of Sean. While different in nature, maybe like a Favre performance when his dad passed.

Hughes is the only NFL player to ever die during a game. There have been a few game-related or practice-related deaths over the years (Korey Stringer) but there have been very few NFL deaths during the season -- none of which (as far as I know) were violence-related.edit: Darrent Williams was shot the day after the season ended in 2007.

1964 - Willie Galimore and Bo Farrington (car crash on way to training camp)

1965 - Mack Lee Hill (died during routine knee surgery)

1971 - Chuck Hughes (heart attack during game)

1979 - J.V. Cain (heart attack during training camp)

2007 - Sean Taylor

I think it will be tough for the team to play the game with their hearts hurting so badly.

As a point of reference, look how long it took Maverick to get over the senseless death of Goose.

In all seriousness, I really feel for those guys. It is going to be really tough to focus.

I haven't seen this on the page and I'm definitely not a myspace expert, but IIRC, you can only post messages on someone's myspace page if you are their myspace "friend" and you should be able to hotlink to Portis' myspace page from this message. This could be a hoax, but I can totally buy that Portis was one of Taylor's myspace "friends", and therefore also has a myspace page of his own.

DC Native & Resident Here:

Will be out of town, but would LOVE to be able to go to the game this weekend, and show my support and solidarity with 93k other fans. I don't mind at all switching to a discussion from a football standpoint, because I'm really upset from all this unavoidable coverage (and stupid coworkers making references):

-I don't see a straight parallel to that Wellington Mara game where the Skins were brutalized by the Giants. It was a big deal for the Giants, but it didn't interrupt their day to day operations as much as this does for the Skins. This is a deep dagger into the heart of the Redskins, and I am not convinced they will be quite able to perform the same way the Giants did then.

-Don't bet completely against a postponement/rescheduling....

I quite enjoyed the past 3 years of watching every single game played by perhaps the best Safety of his generation
