That was RB Joe Delaney back in July of 1983...died trying to save a group of kids in LA.What was the name of the KC Chief player who drowned trying to rescue a child back around 15 years ago? Anybody remember?

I am a life long Broncos fan and I can't imagine if there had been a game the following week after Darrent Williams death under similar circumstances. My thoughts and prayers go out to Sean's family and friends and Skins fans.DC Native & Resident Here:
Will be out of town, but would LOVE to be able to go to the game this weekend, and show my support and solidarity with 93k other fans. I don't mind at all switching to a discussion from a football standpoint, because I'm really upset from all this unavoidable coverage (and stupid coworkers making references):
-I don't see a straight parallel to that Wellington Mara game where the Skins were brutalized by the Giants. It was a big deal for the Giants, but it didn't interrupt their day to day operations as much as this does for the Skins. This is a deep dagger into the heart of the Redskins, and I am not convinced they will be quite able to perform the same way the Giants did then.
-Don't bet completely against a postponement/rescheduling....

I wouldn't bet against you, just noting that its not out of the question. From WaPost NFL report Maske's chat this morning, among other comments about it:Actually I'll take that bet.-Don't bet completely against a postponement/rescheduling....
Baltimore: Is it strictly a league decision regarding whether to play this weekend's game with the Bills? Do the Redskins or Bills have any say? It certainly puts a visiting team in an awkward position.Mark Maske: My understanding is that it's a league decision but I'm sure there will be input from the teams, particularly the Redskins.
I was thinking about that this morning as well. Flying the entire team to the funeral will mean over 50 players all have to coordinate their schedules to suit the flight schedule, and I don't know if that's possible to do on such short notice. Perhaps Snyder will just offer a flight for those who have no other plans, and wish to attend the funeral. As to how it works out with the timing of the game, that's just going to be a disaster. And how do you choose between traveling for a teammate's funeral and attending the game? Severe collision of values with no right answer. I wouldn't blame the Redskins if they just took the field for the national anthem and a silent prayer, then walked off just taking an 'L'. I don't think that'll happen, but if it was what the team wanted I'd be fine with it.I'm guessing the funeral will probably be on Friday. I would be shocked if Snyder (sic) doesn't fly the team down for the funeral Thursday night and then back either Friday night or Saturday morning.
I doubt it will be a problem. I'm sure Snyder will have a plane ready for whoever wants to go. If you don't want to go, that's fine too.Flying the entire team to the funeral will mean over 50 players all have to coordinate their schedules to suit the flight schedule, and I don't know if that's possible to do on such short notice. Perhaps Snyder will just offer a flight for those who have no other plans, and wish to attend the funeral.
My guess is the family will keep the team in mind to an extent when planning everything. And how do you choose between traveling for a teammate's funeral and attending the game?

Thanks for passing this along, but I'd be very shocked if it was really him. If one of my good friends just died, the last thing on my mind would be to post something on his myspace page. Some companies get bereavement days - until recently my company did. Bosses would stretch it outside of immediate family on some occasions to include secondary rlatives you were close to and close friends. I could see some of the Skins needing that right now - I can imagine needing to just shut down and put life back into perspective. I could see some of these guys taking time off.I could also see them having a heckuva rest of the season. Grief is a funny thing and each person - athlete or no - reacts uniquely. I think that Sunday will be a hard thing for the team. I think it will be a tremendously emotional day - and not just for the Skins but for Buff who will be reminded of almost losing Everett.Since this is a fantasy board - and acknowledging how ghoulish I feel talking fantasy as it pertains to the tragedy - I think this week could be very shaky for the Skins and you have to think hard about your options. I like to think Portis and the rest have a huge game in Taylor's memory. But imagine - if you've been lucky enough never to be in their place - having to go to work when someone you spent an awful lot of time with was taken suddenly from you. It's a bit of a risk.I will say this - I think I play Portis or Cooley as I normally would because I'd like to think they put out there best game in Sean's memory. I'd like to think I could go into work and put my best foot forward and keep moving on. So I guess it's risky - but I'm willing to take a chance on them this weekend, that they band together and play at their best despite their grief - because I'm betting Taylor would have wanted them to do that.Anyway, that's my thoguht. My heart goes out to everone in his family and organization, the fans, everyone. It's just a damned shame. That text off myspace - if it's legit - is heartbreaking.[rant]Not to be a tool, and I'm not going to say it won't be tough, but these are grown men who get paid a lot of money to work for the Redskins.Would your work shut down for a week if somebody at your place of work died this way? I know mine wouldn't.Sure it'd be rough as hell, but you show up and do your job.[/rant]Hijack aside, it is very sad that he died. Not trying to minimize his death at all here.

Patriots mourned the loss of a player this year as wellHughes is the only NFL player to ever die during a game. Well of course there's a tactical purpose ---- to gain enough time to practice semi-adequately between a Sunday game and a Thursday game, when most or all of the team will be flying to Florida between those games for a funeral. But thanks for the reminder that he's dead.GordonGekko said:If the Redskins attempt to postpone the game, my guess is there will also be a tactical purpose at stake.
I normally love your Machiavellian approach to life issues, but I think you're off base here. By every account I've heard the PR staff at Redskins Park is devastated by this on a personal level. As someone noted, during today's Gibbs/Snyder presser, the ubiquitous large, black flat panel screen that flashes images of sponsor logos behind the podium was notably absent today, replaced with a simple black background. Fans will respond to this and I'm sure Taylor jerseys will see a spike in sales, but I'm not seeing any signs of them expoiting this situation.GordonGekko said:Each person will react differently. Each person will probably react differently to the increased media glare on the game. So it's entirely possible someone could break out or break down for reasons other than grief. These men are professionals. There are only a limited number of games in the year for the NFL and each game is worth millions upon millions of dollars. The world will not stop for Sean Taylor, as unfortunate as his tragedy might be. If the Redskins attempt to postpone the game, my guess is there will also be a tactical purpose at stake. As offensive as it might seem to some of you, the Washington Redskins have a PR department and odds are they are throwing ideas around now on how to get the Redskins more media exposure and create more subsequent revenue from it. As sad as it might sound, a struggling team circling the wagons after the death of one of their own makes a good sound bite. It's also a good story. If you think there is no correlation between feel good stories and appeasing the public and making money, then look no further than American Idol. Do you think the Skins opponents aren't making adjustments right now to take advantage of the fact that Taylor is gone? Do you think the Skins themselves aren't looking for replacements or alternatives or different schemes to compensate for Taylor's loss? Death does not absolve the bottom line. I am not minimizing Taylor's death. It's tragic. But cops, firefighters, paramedics and soldiers die every single day, often under more horrific scenarios than Taylors, and their coworkers suck it up, remember that they are professionals, and go get the job done. If the regular Joes of the world can do it, then the Washington Redskins can do it. I do not know Sean Taylor. I do not know if he was a good man. I don't know if he was a bad man. But I'd wager 99.99999 percent of the people here don't know either. At the end of the day, I can only judge him on his merits as a player, from what I could see on the field. I can only judge him as a professional. What happened was tragic, but these men are professionals, they will judged and graded at the end of the season on what they did, not excused for why they couldn't because they were grieving. I'm sorry for his family. But football goes on. Being a professional goes on. Life goes on. Just not for Sean Taylor.
Some other possibles (I can't tell if they were on active NFL rosters at the time of death)...Stacey Toran - car accident, Aug 1989David Croudip, Ralph Norwood and Brad Beckman - three teammates on the Atlanta Falcons who all died in separate incidents in the 1989 season.List of in-season NFL fatalities:1947 - Jeff Burkett (plane crash on way to game)1948 - Stan Maudlin (heart attack in locker room)1954 - Dave Sparks (heart attack in locker room)1960 - Howard Glenn (injured during game and died en route to hospital)1960 - Ralph Anderson (diabetic reaction following game)1963 - Stone Johnson (broke neck during pre-season game and died 10 days later)1964 - Willie Galimore and Bo Farrington (car crash on way to training camp)1965 - Mack Lee Hill (died during routine knee surgery)1971 - Chuck Hughes (heart attack during game)1979 - J.V. I was just pointing one out, don't be nitpicky to me when you weren't in your first post. Geesh. If legit it looks like it was a bulliten posted, not a comment. But if the news report of him changing his # to 21 is true... than this message has less credibility.I haven't seen this on the page and I'm definitely not a myspace expert, but IIRC, you can only post messages on someone's myspace page if you are their myspace "friend" and you should be able to hotlink to Portis' myspace page from this message. This could be a hoax, but I can totally buy that Portis was one of Taylor's myspace "friends", and therefore also has a myspace page of his own.I'm not trying to be a jerk here. I have never looked on my space in my life. How do we know this was Clinton Portis who posted this and not some clown doing this? Again, I'm just asking becuase I have never looked on my space.Clinton Portis posted on on Sean's MySpace page this morning.

Yeah, Moss' mom was there. Again, I have no idea how this team will play. We're all guessing. At 5-6 they can still make the playoffs but they have no margin any longer if you believe as I do that you need 10 wins to make the postseason. How focused on that goal can they be? Then they've got his funeral next week, with a Thursday game against the Bears. That's just a lot of stuff. Not much mentioned about Moss in here. Moss has been very quiet in the media. In fact, I don't think I've seen or heard one quote from him. He's had a tough season with injuries and poor performance. It will be interesting to see how he plays. One rumor has been that it was Moss' mom who was at the hospital Monday sending info to Redskins Park before Snyder and others arrived in Miami. That tells me that he was likely just as close to Sean as Portis was.
that is why the thread title is what it was.I feel sorry for Taylor, his family, and loved ones....but life has to go on for the rest of us...and for some of us, money is on the line with this as well. Sure, its not alot of money to really be worried over...but I don't find it a bad thing that it is discussed on a message board by people who did not know Taylor outside of seeing him on TV with a football helmet on.Seriously? People are actually worried about how this affects their players from a fantasy perspective? You want to wonder how the team will respond to this, I have no problems. If you want to wonder how your fantasy production will be because of this maybe you should keep it to yourself seeing how it doesn't really matter at this point. This was a pointless, stupid tragedy that I can only hope lead to athletes protecting themselves as well as they can as well as being a lesson on being careful what connections you make over the span of your life.![]()
From the Redskins' team chaplain:No one can predict with any accuracy how the players, and the team as a whole will react to this tragedy. I agree with the "everyone will react differently" sentiment. Don't underestimate the effect it will have on the Bills mindset too - how can they approach this like a normal game, especially after they watched one of their own almost die on the field earlier this year. It hurts to even think about how Portis and Moss will play in light of Taylor's passing. These circumstances are basically unprecedented, this is uncharted territory - especially for Taylor's family and team.
:(
Fuller also said that there are varying feelings among the players about whether or not they truly want to play this weekend "It depends who you talk to," Fuller said - but all realize that is the reality of this situation. and he expects the team to be extremely prepared to play Sunday at FedEx Field.
Apparently Pedro Taylor and Sean's girlfriend, Jackie, surprised the team in their locker room after the morning workout and they had a very emotional meeting. Pedro Taylor is reported to have said that if you want to honor Sean's memory, go out and play with the intensity he had and win your next five games. I'm sure they'll be fired up, but again I can't speak to what the ultimate effect of all of this will be on them on Sunday.fatness said:
The meeting this morning lasted about 2 hours in the auditorium, players said, with players reporting at 8. Coach Joe Gibbs and owner Daniel Snyder spoke, and the players had no idea Sean's family would be there. But Pedro Taylor and Sean's family arrived, including his girlfriend Jackie, his mom and an uncle. Jackie Garcia and Pedro Taylor both addressed the team, in what players said were highly emotional moments. Players said they took courage and inspiration from the words of Jackie and Pedro, both of whom urged them that the best way to honor Sean was to play as hard as they can in the passionate fashion he played.
Tailback Clinton Portis also spoke, and he too broke down a bit recalling his experiences with Sean. Team chaplain Brett Fuller also addressed the team. Safety Pierson Prioleau and others said they had the chance to hug Sean's family and voice their support at the end of the meeting.
During a somber news conference, Snyder said the NFL would honor Taylor with a moment of silence at this week's games, and all players would wear a No. 21 sticker on their helmets. Redskins players, officials said, also would wear a special patch. "Over the last two years, I got a chance to really see him grow as a man off the field," said Snyder, who had led a team contingent to Miami after the shooting. "Off the field, he became very, very important to me, our organization and Coach [Joe] Gibbs. . . . This is a terrible tragedy, and we're going to miss him very, very much."
At this point, according the NFL office, Clinton Portis and/or the Redskins have made no request for Portis to change his No. to 21, Sean's number. Any player would have to receive league approval before making such a change.
Also, as of this point the Redskins are planning for that game with Chicago to remain on Thursday night.
Sean's Funeral
It will be Monday morning at the arena at Florida International University in the Miami area. The Redskins will attend.
Anytime emotions are HIGH, two things can happen...either play out of this world w/ the passion or when things don't go right, they check out. When you're playing by your emotional edge of your seat...it can help as much as hinder. So, I expect them to play either lights out football or turn the light out and leave the building football. I doubt it will be anything in the middle of that.
This may be whoever scores first wins.
