NON Political - Hypocrisy. Can we talk? (1 Viewer)

I got a little misty-eyed during the halftime show because of how I felt it empowered women. Sincerely. Also I have zero social media awareness and was pleasantly ignorant to the idea that there are men who apparently felt the exact polar opposite of how I reacted to it. Just wanted to contribute my voice and add to the "good mix of comments" as I thought that difference was kinda interesting. Thank you for the opportunity to do so
In what ways are average women empowered by two megastars flaunting their sexuality?

Regarding the OP, depending on the standards you set, it is nearly impossible to avoid being hypocritical. As Godsbrother said, you just have to own up to it and try to do better.

I won't list all of the ways. But realizing that Jen and Shakira were just average women themselves at one point may inspire someone. They engaged in a lot of hard work and became successful. It wasn't an accident. And then they got older. And then became successful.. AGAIN. Huge accomplishments that they worked hard for. Life is a series of ebbs and flows and knowing that it's possible for one to "never give up," no matter how old you become, and still be able to experience success - over and over again - transforming yourself into a "megastar" over and over again throughout a life that none of us really has any clue what the hell's going on in..? But it's only possible to consider those excellent ideas if and only if you're comfortable with dancing. Like dude said on page one, if witnessing dancing causes you to point a finger in a negative way, or if that's the place where your brain took it while everyone else watches and enjoys the show, the responsibility is kinda on you & becomes your fault at that point for being a hater and not changing the channel.

:scared:

But here's my question - what do you think it is that seems to completely blind us to our own hypocrisy?

Why is your arrogance ok but it kills you in others? Why is your snarky post ok but when the "other guy" does it you're mad?
Challenging question, both in its scope and the difficulty inherent in providing a non-political answer.

Each of us has a world view, and each of us has a self image.  These are two aspects of what it means when Buddhists talk about objectification, the mind's natural tendency to look at things as "good", "bad" or "I don't know".  The mind has a fundamental need to classify things.  And since the majority of us don't have a negative self image, it takes effort to not fall into hypocrisy and it takes effort to not judge the other guy.

Shorter answer: its basic human nature....or basic mental patterns...that take conscious effort to combat.

This effort is referred to by many names including "walking in the footsteps of Christ" and "The Noble Eight Fold Path".

The lack of this effort, as GroveDiesel mentioned, is described as cognitive dissonance.  The brain MUST reconcile everything it sees, and when it can't it uses mental gymnastics to balance the ledger.  Ahhh.....life in the objectified universe; gotta love it!

This has always existed obviously. The difference today is simply the bolded. People not only  no longer make that effort, but they post every thought loud and proud without consideration for anyone or anything else.

Right and the spread of technology and ability to post every thought is what makes it at least seem worse. Is it really worse than 50 years ago or just more obvious?

I would say worse, because it feeds itself and amplifies itself.
I would agree that technology and social media amplify things.  Ted Turner also amplified things with news as a means of generating advertising revenue.  Its very interesting to travel abroad and watch the news outside the domestic market.  And we would be remiss not to mention that organizations of power have learned how to leverage media, which makes for a terrible combination (selling media <---> leveraging media).  Having said that, in a culture where we have all pretty much collectively abandoned our civics responsibilities, we kinda get what we deserve.

I often fantasize about a third moderate party rising from the ashes of the corpses of the republican and democratic parties (note to Joe: this is a politically neutral statement) but the machine seems geared to deliver the polarized dynamic that Thomas Jefferson warned us about when editorializing about the danger of the two party system.

I think it is way worse. As I mentioned initially, people no longer consider any feelings other than their own. My parents would have never said things to other people that folks say today. No way, no how.

Can someone explain the source of hypocrisy like I'm a newt? Is it about Trump saying he grabbed kitties or is there a greater depth to the OP's  perceived hypocrisy of this cat? I'm just curious.

In general, I think just about everyone but me is a narcissist.
