From NFL.com...

The housecleaning is coming. And the San Diego Chargers won't go halfway.Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego reported Thursday that general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner will be fired at the end of the season. Acee's sources said that Chargers president Dean Spanos "essentially decided at least a month ago" that Turner would be let go. Spanos also decided recently that Smith will be let go.

Norv has been like a roach that lived through a nuclear blast.

I could see Norv go to Dallas to be OC for Garrett, which would suck as a Cowboy fan. I'm not sure two teams have screwed up more potential the last few years than Dallas and San Diego. It's like they are the same team.

If Spanos had fired Smith instead of Schottenheimer they'd have been a lot better off. Egomania is a bad quality in a GM.

OMFG already! for the sake of SD nation please Spanos just can these two clowns already!

7 years too late. Yes, San Diego should have preemptively fired Norv a full year before they hired him.

as a dallas fan, i'd be happy to have him as our OC. that is what he is best at.

He's incredibly overrated as a coordinator, too. In the early 90s he was handed three HoFers and a devastating line, and he returned a great (but not historically so) offense. Since then, what has he done?

This is very true. Also don't forget this was pre-salary cap era. He hasn't done jack since 1994.

How hard are these guys going to play now that they know everyone is getting fired?

This game in Pittsburgh is setting up to be a ### whoopin. Steelers defense is playing well, Polamalu back, Big Ben back, at home. San Diego across country early game with coach and GM already fired....not good.

Should have fired them both last year. The Spanos family has no business trying to run a football team let alone owning one. But regardless of the denial you know they are gone at the end of this year. I mean, it was really stupid giving them one more year. To give them another....well...there's a limit to how stupid a person can be and I think Dean Spanos has reached that limit in this case.

How does this represent a change over previous expectations? All of San Diego's games against quality teams either devolve into an ### whoopin (Atlanta), a heartbreaker (Baltimore), or both (Denver).

Good chance Chargers fans will be seeing Andy Reid soon. Just as soon as he puts his players in a better position, then times yours.

Norv as OC would actually be an upgrade for a few teams such as Detroit.
Detroit fan.. not disappointed with Linehan. Absolutely hate Norv.
Norv won 2 superbowls as an OC. Does Linehan even have a winning record?
If you watch the play calling in Detroit, it's not bad and it's not why Detroit isn't winning. Linehan as a head coach has been abyssmal, Linehan as an offensive coordinator has been very good.Norv as an OC in Dallas had probably one of the greatest overall teams in NFL history on both sides of the ball, playing for him at the time. It's tough to say whether it was his coaching or his players. I will say this though.. his playcalling certainly wasn't state of the art, changing the face of the game kind of stuff when he was there.Take out the Dallas years and look at his work. In Washington, in Oakland, in San Diego, it hasn't been impressive, even with good players to work around. However these years were when he was the Head Coach and not simply the OC.Perhaps, like Linehan, Turner just doesn't have what it takes to be a head coach and needs to go back to being an Offensive Coordinator.

I agree with that last part. Some good team that is underperforming on offense should hire him as an OC but never again as a HC.

I'm not really sure how good an offensive coordinator Norv is. He did some good things with the Chargers' offense years ago, and he did some good things with the 49ers and Raiders offenses. But that was a while ago. The game keeps changing, and I'm not sure whether Norv is a bit too stuck in his old way of doing things. That's really hard for me to evaluate. But the results lately haven't been pretty. Especially in the second halves of games.

And even the good things he did were pretty underwhelming. If he were named Joe Smith, he never would have gotten a head coaching gig based on what he did in San Diego or San Francisco as a coordinator.

Norv isn't as bad as his reputation IMO, but it's time for a change in SD.

The offense is a mess, but there are some very nice pieces on defense for whomever takes over. Melvin Ingram, Kendall Reyes, Corey Ligut, Marcus Gilchrist, Shareece Wright, Donald Butler, Vaughn Martin, Antoine Cason, and Eric Weddle are all young and should be starters for years.
