Note to Sirius NFL Radio... (1 Viewer)

If anyone affiliated with this channel happens to read this note, please realize that I believe your (dare I say "our") channel is beginning to go down hill. IMO, several of your featured analysts/personalities are mostly... well... awful; this point is especially emphasized by the recent additions of Jim "Favre Envy" Miller and umm... uhhh... Jerry "you know" Rice (who borders on unlistenable).

On this note, with all due respect for what Rice did in his NFL career, I don't want to hear people gush on him over and over and over. Can we please draw the line somewhere with caller praise for his accomplishments? Please? It's bad enough we have to struggle through Rice's speech problems and weak analysis but this constant stream of "oh my God, I'm talking to Jerry Rice" stuff from callers has been stale since day one.

Hell, even some of your stalwart hosts are approaching annoying in their own way. Randy Cross, for example, sounds bitter/cynical to me. Although he's got a decent radio voice, he frequently complains about having to speculate on players and the league in the off-season. Would someone please break the news to Mr. Cross that this is a primary reason he was hired? If he doesn't enjoy his job, he's free to take a crack at mine while I discuss the NFL all day.

And while I'm on the topic of hosts, Carl Banks sounds asleep to me. Carl's commentary is typically insightful but is putting someone this mellow on the radio when most of us are trying to wake up really a good idea?

Look, I'm just saying this because I care. Having a 24/7 365 all NFL radio station is awesome but someone there is making some bad decisions or is asleep at the wheel because while some cool stuff is still going on (the 2:00 drills, draft coverage, Barber Shop, fantasy coverage, etc.) there's some bad apples in this pie. And I like my pie.

NOTE:

To the readers here that are about to condemn me for a) being negative, b) reproducing complaints probably mentioned elsewhere or c) because you're simply a troll, please realize this post is just the result of, and an outlet for, my personal frustration with this Sirius channel, amongst other, like-minded, NFL fans.

I actually do not have Sirius because I hardly ever drive more than 2 miles at a time and working from home I have access to enough TV and radio coverage. But I've got a friend who has been on me for over 2 years to get Sirius anyway because he thinks I would love the NFL coverage. This same friend told me just 2 days ago how awful and painfull it was to listen to Jerry Rice to the point he now turns the station whenever Rice comes on. So, it's not just you.

I agree with some of your points here. I am one of those people that does not feel strongly about whether a sports talk show host makes a difference (you have to be really good or bad for me to even notice the difference between these guys), but I have to tell you, the addition of Rice is awful.

It is a great station and I think right now it is getting a lot of exposure and people like Rice are suddenly showing an interest in doing radio (and of course they are jumping at the chance of having someone with Rice's on the field credentials). They will dig their own grave and Sirius NFL will realize they need to pass on the big names if they cannot deliver on the air.

I've been a subscriber since day one and I pretty much agree with all of your points. I find myself listening less and less lately simply because the shows just aren't as good as they used to be. Not sure if it's the new faces, the callers, management, or what. Probably a little of everything.

I agree with this assessment 100%. I basically have the NFL channel on all day at work and it's been getting worse and worse. I enjoy Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan. Randy Cross is tolerable. Can't stand Jerry Rice and Adam Schein.

Mostly good posting

Agree big time about Rice. He shouldnt be on

Also not a fan of the rotating hosts. Rather them get a team and stick with it. Better chemistry that way.

And please, PLEASE get Bob Papa off the morning show

Other than Mike and Mike & The Herd, I don't care for ESPN Radio. Was thinking it's time to switch to Sirius for the NFL station, but if that's getting bad, what should I tune into during the afternoons?

What else is out there that I might be missing?

I haven't listened for a year. I like XM's music better, but have been thinking about coming back.

I used to like Kirwin and Sharpe, but thought many like Reeves never did homework and just showed up when on. Sounds like it got worse. Adam Schien drove me crazy using 100 words to say what he could have with just 5.

PK is a great host. Adam Shein, eh, decent. Rice, yeah, not the greatest voice but I like to hear his thoughts on WR prospects. The Barber shop is awesome and I listen to it whenever I can. Personally I like the channel overall and am glad to have it. Better than the NBA station which is nothing more than an audio broadcast of the NBA channel.

I can't wait til the Barbers retire so they can take full time gigs...they are awesome. A lot of people like Schein, I find him absolutely predictable and slow to the point. They need to move a Rich Eisen or Salisbury into the limelight for shows during the day. In short, they need solid anchors and to keep color analysts like Cris Carter in the mix. Overall, I love the channel as a sidebar to ESPN radio when they go off on a baseball tangent. I'm sure it will get better but certainly agree, they are begging for a new program director on this channel worse than CBS after letting Stern go.

sorry, wrong Adam :)

Moving the Chains with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan is the best show on the station, period. Although I do like Solomon Wilcots when he subs in for Kirwan every once and a while..

I think I'm a little down on sports talk as a whole. I turned on Rome one day and all I heard was clones kissing his ### because he reupped his contract. Dan Patrick is likeable as a person but it seems like his sports topics are too macro for my tastes.

Jerry Rice is the worst. Ahhhhh, you know, ahhhhhhhh, you know. I can't take it. I actually love Schein's energy, he is on AM New York Sports on Mondays and is great talking about the Mets. Kirwin is great. The "Godfather" Gill Brandt sounds like a boring Ditka, I can't stand him, and yes I know he is a God on that station, but he puts me to sleep. But, all in all Jerry is the worst, and they better do something about it!

On a side note, when Jerry talks just go to Howard and there is bound to be something funny on there, like "Bigfoot" the other day, that was priceless.

The Barber Shop, Kirwan and Tim Ryan are excellent, and I frequently catch a lot of great interviews. ... but, I find myself changing the channel, often.

Sirius Radio spends WAY TOO MUCH time talking about Sirius Radio.

PK and TRock are fantastic. They bring great insight. Schein is predictable but I like his energy...that's what the drive time needs. Bob Papa is such a freaking Giants homer. Jim Miller has been good, he has that lunch pail type personality. I'm sorry but the fantasy show can be so much better. Getting rid of Sharpe was good. Jerry Rice needs Toastmasters. I miss Riggins! Gil Brandt could tell you what time Danny White would take a #### during training camp. Sully isn't bad. Barber shop is great for player insight.

Bottom Line..Sirius Rocks. There is no other 24/7 NFL Radio channel. It's ok for each of us to be critical but not take that channel for granted. Steve Cohen just needs to get the right people in the right times.

I like Mike & Mike too, but 90% of their show is commercials. It's hard to tune into the show when they take a 15 minute commercial break every three minutes.

No question Rice is killing me with the "you knows" and the reading of someone's stat line as his "analysis" of how good a player is, I miss Riggo at least he had some personality, even if his analysis was a little weak.

The Fantasy Football show is good, I have only listened to it twice so far, but I am pleased. More Solomon Wilcots, he is the best. Everytime Gil Brandt is on, I flip to Howard Stern.

I said:
Schein Sucks
He does, I still cannot get over his gravelly voice "Legendary interview" with Randy Moss.In that same interview Rice must have called Moss "the man" 10 times, and sai "look at chyou" 15 times.Terrible....

Used to look forward to Riggo, even if Schein was bombastic at times (okay, most of the time). Riggo's response to a caller who claimed Riggo was underrated because he was white was classic: "I just played football, man. I could care less how people feel about me." Also funny to hear in this day and age of Red Bull etc that Riggo would drink two cups of hot coffee an hour before the game.

Rice is TERRIBLE. Not "Magic Show" bad, but bad. Very sad. Someone should have talked to him.

I bet they have to stick with him for the year tho. Hopefully they'll get a clue that listenership is way down in the afts.

Rice is my favorite player of all time but he sucks on the radio, that said I would take hearing him over Schein anyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Hopefully Rice will get better I will cut him a little slack since he's a rookie.

I love my Sirius NFL, listen to it all day (I installed it in my office). And I agree with pretty much everything above.

1. Carl Banks - thinks that being obstinate substitutes for insight. Wrong. I really can't stand listening to him because his opinions just seem so far out in left field that I tune out what he is saying.

2. Randy Cross - his little "laugh" to emphasize a point drives me bonkers. He comes across like he has so many other things he'd rather be doing than discussing football on Sirius, like he's doing it as a favor to the masses.

However, unlike others in this thread, I really like listening to Gil Brandt. You can tell that this guy absolutely lives for football. I love listening to his stories on his many years involvement in the NFL. Even his predictable, "is what it is" doesn't really bother me :)

I agree with your first point, and disagree with the second.I thought I was the only one who picked up on that stupid laugh. Also, when he agrees with the hosts' point, he does so seemingly grudgingly. For example, the host will make a comment, and Cross will say "Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"..... as if it was the most painful thing in the world for him to concur with the point. As you pointed out, it's almost like he's doing the guy a favor. "Okay -- I guess I'll agree with you."

As for Gil, the man has a lot of knowledge, no question about it. But I simply cannot STAND hearing him finish every sentence by saying "is what it amounts to." :wall: You would think that the powers that be at Sirius would pull him aside, respectfully, and ask him to please stop saying that.

To the original poster: I agree with just about everythng you wrote, with the exception of your comments regarding Jim Miller. I think he's been a wonderful addition the the staff. He has some refreshing views and a nice, smooth delivery.

I made some other general comments about Sirius today in this thread.

I pretty much agree with the masses here. Shein and Rice suck. (I can't even make it home before having to change the channel when they are on.) Moving the Chains is awesome. Soloman is great. And, put me in the camp that thinks Jim Miller does a good job.

What does everyone think of Zig Fercossi(sp?) He doesn't get many chances, but I think he does great when he's on.

Howard replays all day on Ch 100Bubba The Love Sponge Ch 101 weekdays 3pm - 7pmScott Ferrell (he knows his sports, kind of a poor mans Jim Rome) Ch 101 evenings 8pm - 11pmBut I might be a bit biased. ;)

...other incredible reasons to get Sirius Satellite, which is the best investment I've made.

"Raw Dog" uncensored stand up comedy channel 24 hrs per day

"Laugh In" censored family friendly stand up comedy channel

"Blue Coller Comedy" for rednecks and ######ed folk (sorry, that's too harsh...I'll just say if the words "Get er done" have ever left your lips, this channel is for you. For the rest of us, there is Raw Dog and Laugh In)

Every imaginable type of music you could want, commercial free. Every type of political 'talk' station you could want, no matter who you support.

NASCAR as of 2007

I haven't been able to even listen to normal radio since December when I got Sirius. You will not be disappointed.

The points about Jim Miller and Jerry Rice in this post are accurate, but I put this to you....find better radio on FM or AM. You won't. End of story. Find NFL coverage of this sort during the off season (or during the season) where you get scores etc...scrolling on your radio on FM or AM. You won't.

The people whining in this post have some valid points about the NFL channel and in particular, a couple of really bad hosts.

Overall, the Sirius Satellite experience is so incredible you will not be disappointed though.

Another thumbs up on Miller, I would take him every day over rice. Gil Brandt has a lot of knowledge for the draft, but after that he is such a Dallas homer and has a voice that puts you to sleep, I can't take it. Maybe after the season starts I will switch to Mike and Mike on the ride to work, now I can't stand all the baseball talk on their show.

Carl Banks is friggin terrible. Anyone on this site could be more insightful. I remember him talking about how he didnt know what detroits problem was because they have a really good offensive line.

Okay, for the 30 sec I was tuned in trying to take it this evening and then had to give up, here was Jerry's big preview of the Miami game:

"Uh, I look for, uh, you know, Ronnie Brown running the ball, uh...."

No thank you :wall: :wall:

I was thinking of picking up Sirius this year for the NFL games, but there sure seems to be a lot of negative input about the channels when the games aren't on.

Question: Doesn't the NFL have some sort of input or say in the production of these channels? They micromanage every other aspect of their product. it would be hard for me to believe that there are this many concerns about something related to the NFL without them getting directly involved. Do you believe that this is something that's a work in progress and the kinks will get worked out? Definitely going to keep a close eye on this.

Don't misunderstand. My concerns relate entirely to one show. The rest of it is Fantastic. Now if they could just stream their original (non-NFL network) content, we'd be close to Perfect

Agreed on how bad Rice is, Miller I like. As far as Sirius in general I like Stern, NFL channel, Raw Dog, Wiseguys,Playboy , Maxim etc. and of course commercial free music. I do agree that the NFL channel could have alot better cast overall but I'll take it over any other sports radio. At least I get nothing but NFL coverage, I couldn't give 2 sheits about that joke of a league MLB, NHL or the NBA and I love to play golf but I can't stand listening or watching it. As for Sirius' music channels, they suck IMO. Every single one has a rotating list of about 25 songs with a few others tossed in. You have to constantly turn the dial to find anything decent and the dj's for the most part suck. It's still better than XM and regular radio but could be alot better.

Some of the points in this thread are valid but the bottom line is that this product is fantastic. I have foregone listening to music and now only listen to this program. I feel that I will be better prepared for my drafts this year. Also, all of the NFL games are on Sirius and I decided not to get the Sunday Ticket again. I also feel this the radio coverage is overall better than the NFL Network coverage.

I also really want streaming. It would be much easier to listen at work.

Yes, Jerry Rice sucks as a radio personality.

I couldn't agree more about Jerry Rice. The guy is a total mush mouth. I dont expect his english to be perfect but c'mon, he butchers the language on a daily basis. He gots to go

As for the some of the other guys:

Kirwan and Ryan - These guys are the best on the air IMO. I could listen to these guys all day long. Each of them brings a great view point to the show and they are always great to the callers

Wilcox - I think he is fantastic. I love him on NFL Network and now on Sirius.

Adam "Its a Football Friday " Schein - I loved their show when he was on with Riggins, however since then it has really fallen off. Schein needs an older grumpy guy to off set his young enthusiastic approach. Wheres Buddy Ryan or Mike Ditka when you need them ?

Carl Banks - I lost all respect for this guy when last year he argued with a listner on how the Seahawks would trade D.Jackson and S.Alexander (keep in mind SA wasnt signed) to the Eagles for Owens and Westy. At that point every time I hear him talk all I hear in my head is "You have no idea what you are talking about, you have no idea what you are talking about".

That being said I listen to Sirius NFL radio more then 5 hours a day (I do outside sales) and its a hell of alot better then Phillys 610 WIP.

T-Rock and Pat Kirwan are phenomenal.

Solomon Wilcots is great to listen to, objective, informative, and a great host.

Adam Cheyn brings some spice to the channel.

Carl Banks - ok

Gil Brandt - boring, but knowledgeable

Bob Papa - sucks

Brian McGovern - decent host, I don't think he's knows much about football

Jerry Rice is unbearable.

Adam Caplan and Jon Hansen spend too much time patting themselves on the back for things they did three years ago in one league. They don't really listen to callers entire questions.

EXAMPLE: A guy called last night and said he had to keep three - one qb, one wr, and one rb. He was keeping Favre, R. Moss, and Mcgahee. Their answer: I would definitely keep McGahee, not the others.

They said you can't keep Favre unless interceptions count.

He asked who he should take with his then first pick.

Maybe take a Chris Simms with your first pick.

??

They should shove some of these guys in a box with Butch Davis, Mike Mayock, and the entire ESPN staff and throw away the key.

If I ran Sirius I'd be offering Trent Dilfer a job right now.

I'm not sure if you guys already know, but there will be NO streaming of the NFL Channel or any of the games. The NFL prohibits it.

To Adam Caplan.

Next time you check in here, can you P-L-E-A-S-E e-mail the link to this thread to Steve Cohen or whomever runs the show at Sirius NFL Radio. Jerry Rice has to go. I'm BEGGING here. He has to go. As great as he was as a football player, he is ten gazillion times worse as a radio guy. Maybe he has some good insights now and then, but I'll never know because I cannot take more than five seconds of him.

When one of the shows on Sirius NFL Radio begins, and I hear "Here is your host _______ and Jerry Rice".... the channel gets changed. Period. I managed to listen to one whole minute of his show with Adam Schein yesterday. In one reply, I literally counted 17 "Ummms," 15 "Uhhhhs," 327 "you knows" (as the original poster points out) and two mispronounced names.

During that reply, he was telling us about the Detroit WRs. Mike Williams, Roy Williams, and Charles Williams. Hey, at least he got two of 'em right! I'm sure he's the greatest guy in the world. Just know that countless Sirius receivers are switching to another channel the minute his voice is heard.

Thank you for your time.

Pretty sure most DO know, as that was covered above. I'm just hoping original NFLRadio content (Movin' the Chains, Sirius FF, etc) could get streamed.

So, if you heard, "Here are your hosts, Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Jesus, and Jerry Rice!" you'd change the station?

There is a relatively easy way to stream it, but you have to have extra hardware. If you already have a Slingbox you can use it to stream the the NFL Channel, and then you can listen to it anywhere you have an internet connection, including your Treo :)

I dont think MLK or Ghandi's football knowledge is up to par so I would tune out. Jesus though may have some insight on how games would turn out so I may stay tuned.

I totally agree with your opinion of Rice. He has got to be the worst radio analyst there is! I loved him on the field and have much love for what he did in the NFL but he is horrible in the booth. Please Jerry...... retire from the booth. With that being said Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan are simply ...... THE BEST!!

So to those of you who already have it...

I drive a semi truck out of state 4 days a week. The only thing is, I drive a different truck each day. I would really like to have a setup that I could move in and out with minimal pain-in-the-### fumbling with wires, antennae, etc. What setup would you recommend, and how much should I reasonably expect to drop on setting this up (not the subscription price, just getting set up). Any input is appreciated.

Sirius has an "on-the-go" player for both work car and home due out in October. Check this link.

I would really like to have a setup that I could move in and out with minimal pain-in-the-### fumbling with wires, antennae, etc. What setup would you recommend, and how much should I reasonably expect to drop on setting this up (not the subscription price, just getting set up). Any input is appreciated.
I have the Sirius sportster and like it alot. In your case it would be easy to move it around. The docking station is easily moveable, it attaches to the windshield by a suction cup. You can easily move the antenna between trucks, just have the wire lose in your cab. Its around $140 but u may be able to find deals.By the way I agree with everyone, Rice is not good on the radio....No doubt
