NYG WR's (1 Viewer)

Spin off from my dynasty draft question.

After Nicks, who do you want and when do they go in start up drafts. Steve Smith vs Mario Manningham. I worry they will cut into each others and you will always be guessing which one, which week. I have seen Smith going in 8th round most drafts. Manningham as high as 7.05 in experts draft and as low as 10.04. Both are still available in early 8th of my current start up draft.

Thoughts on theese two guys?

Smith is coming back from injury and there's no assurance he will return to his former standing. Unless you're a big gambler, I would go with someone else (and not necessarily Mario). Mario has shown flashes, but I wouldn't consider him early 8th.

I like Mario. He really came on last year and it seems to me the combination of Smiths' reported injuries and the giants drafting a slot receiver in the 3rd is telling.

Currently, Manningham is the safer choice, but might not be the best choice, he'll be the #3 guy and may overtake Smith for the #2 if Smith can't return to form. It's too early to assume Manningham will be the #2 though, I'd rank him like he'll be the #3 wr for the Giants. If Smith comes back with no decline in ability, he'll keep his #2 spot. Smith is just too reliable and runs great routes to lose his spot to Manningham who allows the ball to hit his palms, causing the ball to bounce out.

Mario Mannignham is still young at 24 and is a play maker. He has 14 td's over the last 2 years and he can make some plays down the field and get big gains off of short passes. He is not built for a WR 1 in the NFL, but if lined up opposite a guy like Nicks for the future he has a lot of potential. I think the Giants will wait and see how Steve Smith recovers from his injury before they think about resigning Mario to a long term contract. Mario has some faults but he is still young and has time to correct some of these faults. Eli has been frustrated with him in the past, but you can't knock the production Mario has had in limited time.

Steve Smith is consistent and if he returns to form he is a very nice PPR player. He is a favorite target of Eli and is a guy that runs as good of routes as there is. He is arguably the best slot guy in the league when healthy but his health is a major concern.

I think Smith is an 8th round value. This is the year when injured guys veterans will have additional time to heal and less stress from camps and preseaon games. Eli trust him and will continue to look to him when it counts.

Sorry no link - but there is mumbling that Steve Smith will start the year off on PUP....he might not be available until mid season...

Here is how I see the remaining Giants WRs after Nicks:

Smith - Best of the bunch (and IF healthly), not really close when it comes to fantasy numbers, especially in PPR. Of course, with the injury, it is a gamble, and I am not sure at this point if it is worth the selection in the 8th, but not a devasting loss considering where you get him, if he does not pan out in 2011.

Manningham - Really like this guy. While we are not privvy to the calls GM field for trades, if I were a GM, I would be on the phone weekly with the Giants trying to figure out how to pry him from their hands. Truth is, between Smith and Hicks and their injuries, he has played pretty steadily the past couple of years and while he is not a natural pass catcher, he is pretty darn good at getting open and has a knack for the end zone.

Barden - If you really want a Giants WR, wait and grab Barden late in your draft. You have Smith who is coming off of a major injury and Nicks, who while very good has been a victim of nagging injuries. The Giants seem to be fine with Manning and his "live by the sword, die by the sword" passing philosophy (I used to think Delhomme was a poor man's Favre, but really, Manning is even a better version). There will be balls to go around and they don't care if it is just Barden and a guy like Derek Hagan out there...they are gonna sling it. I could be mistaken, but I think Barden is Nicks' primary backup and if that is the case, he could be golden if he gets in at a very light price tag.

Barden, as of a couple weeks ago hasn't started running yet. April 29, 2011 – 11:18 pm

"Barden Says He’s Ahead of Schedule: WR Ramses Barden, who fractured his ankle last season in the second game against the Cowboys, said on Friday his rehab is ahead of schedule. Barden did need surgery during the offseason to cleanup the ankle.

“I’m definitely ahead of schedule right now and feeling a lot better now than I was a couple of months ago before I had everything done,” Barden said. “So all the trainers are impressed with the progress and they are excited to see how fast it is going.”

Barden has not begun to run yet." http://www.bigblueinteractive.com/page/2/

The clean-up surgery was late Feb-early March "WR Ramses Barden, who broke his ankle and suffered ligament damage during a loss to the Cowboys in November, will undergo a procedure this week to “clean out his leg,” according to someone informed of the details of Barden’s rehab. " Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger February 26, 2011, http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2011/02/giants_wr_ramses_bardens_leg_i.html

I'd keep Victor Cruz in the running for the #4 spot (#3 if Smith can't go also). Cruz has been one of the few players working out with Eli the past couple weeks. The workouts might not be as strenuous as camp, it does build relationships and Eli has shown he throws to the guys he has confidence in. With how raw Barden still is, and camps possibly shortened, Cruz could beat him out.

Hixon will have to impress as a WR to stay on the team since rookies Prince, Jerrel & Da'Rel have KR/PR skills.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Victor Cruz. Kid has some playmaker in him. I think the Giants regretted placing him on IR early on because of numbers. They could have used him last year with all those injuries

Still feel like Jurrigan will do something in the offense
Might only be KR/PR this season. He has a rep for being a fumbler. Plus with rookie camps being missed and if some training camp time is missed, he probably won't do much, Gilbride said of Beckum and Barden their rookie years when they missed time (due to injury or signing late) that his system is so complex, that rookies that miss time typically don't have much of an impact their rookie seasons. I haven't been able to find the link, I know I posted about it when Gilbride said it. It was June, 2009. He was comparing Beckum's lost time to how Manningham didn't do a lot in his rookie season due to missing time.

:goodposting:He's a better flyer than Barden by a longshot IMO.
Both you guys Shush. :football:
So, will the Giants throw more than last year, or will they rely on Bradshaw more in 2011??
I think they throw as much as last year. I think the number of WR injuries was an aberration, the starters staying healthier this year should help to reduce Eli's Ints, just doing that will help the passing game. I also think they will have to pass at least as much as last year, because the running game won't be improved over last season. Now, the Giants did produce better rushing stats once two starters on the O-line went down, but the Giants running game still lacks consistency, last season you couldn't be sure they'd pick up a 3rd and inches. Then the fumbling by Bradshaw and Jacobs was ridiculous considering that the RB coach that Tiki Barber credited with curing him of his fumbling, is still the RB coach for the Giants. The past few years the Giants running game hasn't been able to dominate games and I don't see that changing this year.Jacobs play and Bradshaw's fumbling last season will probably result in a fairly even split. Probably go back to where one gets the bulk of the carries on a series, then the other gets most of the carries on the next.
