ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Alvis Whitted will start at wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders in their season opener against San Diego, filling the role vacated when Doug Gabriel was traded to New England.

The little-used Whitted hasn't started since the final game of the 2004 season and has just 11 starts in eight seasons in the NFL.

"He can run good routes and catch the ball, too," coach Art Shell said Wednesday. He has "good quickness and explosion. ... This guy's been working the whole camp, worked all offseason, and this guy deserves a shot at it."

Whitted sat out the past two preseason games with a groin injury, but had four catches for 45 yards on Aug. 20 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Gabriel was slated to start before being traded to New England for an undisclosed draft pick on Saturday. Last year's starter Jerry Porter, and Ronald Curry, who is coming back from an Achilles' tendon injury, appeared to be the top choices to take his place.

On Monday, quarterback Aaron Brooks mentioned nearly all of the team's receivers other than Whitted as capable replacements for Gabriel.

Players were unavailable for comment after Shell made the announcement that Whitted would start.

The Raiders have always liked Whitted's speed, which fits into the deep-strike passing game Shell prefers. Despite that breakaway speed, Whitted has not put up big numbers in his eight years as a pro, with just 47 catches for 731 yards and six touchdowns.

Porter clashed with Shell about offseason training right after the coach was hired in February and demanded a trade at the start of training camp, but is the most accomplished receiver next to starter Randy Moss.

Porter led the team with 76 catches last season and has 239 receptions for 3,215 yards and 24 touchdowns in six seasons. Shell would not address Porter's place on the depth chart.

"He's on the roster," Shell said. "I'm not going to get into where he stands -- one, two, three, four, five. I'm not going to do that. He's on the roster, he's working, and that's all I can ask."

:lmao: at the thought of the mad scramble going on to claim Whitted off of waivers right now.
Well, Curry and Porter won't do you much good at this point . . . if they can't beat out Whitted (even it's just a week) then they shouldnt be on your squad either . . .

whitted or gabriel??
Gabriel's a Patriot now.
didn't say he wasn't... who's the better reach...
Gabriel IMHO. Whitted's the fourth best WR on that roster and this is only a matter of time before Curry and Porter move up. I heard from Lee Hamilton on sports radio out here today that Porter was again acting out in practice, continuing to wear a t-shirt with an obscene gesture pictured on it and basically the coaching staff can't stand him.

Thanks redman. Good stuff there. What a bone head Porter is. If you could put Wayne Chrebet's heart / head into Porters body you'd have the next Jerry Rice. Instead we're going to get this guy. J

i figured this meant that Curry wasn't all the way healthy yet.

trading Gabriel still has me scratching my head.

this has to be one of the strangest preseasons in recent memory.

They still have four good WR's. The trade would make no sense if they thought that Porter and Curry really were worse than Whitted. That's why I think they're just making a statement here, primarily with Porter. Curry probably stayed third on the depth chart as the slot WR, and they simply flip-flopped Porter and Whitted.

From what i understand the offence is to revolve around the TE position...2 te--2 wr--rb.

Nothing fancy, just send the wr long(whitted and moss =speed) and use the te underneath or dump off to the rb or send the wr deep and run the ball ,te`s blocking. No mike Martz stuff here.Very basic football.

they are in for a very long year.

Courtney Anderson = Value?

Alvis Whitted - WR - Raiders

Raiders coach Art Shell told the Associated Press that Alvis Whitted will start opposite Randy Moss vs. San Diego on Monday night.

Whitted, who will likely draw Chargers CB Drayton Florence, is a fine fantasy play in leagues that start three wide receivers and should now be owned in all formats. It is still unclear where Ronald Curry and Jerry Porter stand on the depth chart. Sep. 6 - 9:16 p.m. ET

Yeah, I was going over some depth charts last night, and noticed Whitted the #2 guy... NOT Curry... I thought it was an error, but apparently not. Whitted probably went undrafted in many drafts up to this point (especially Survivors).

he's 32 years old and his season high is 14 catches??? There are 4th string WRs that catch more. The fact that he's NEVER been a starter is telling enough.

What's the difference between that and a guy like Gado on the practice squad starting?? Too me your using his age as a reason for him not to be good.. While that might be true he could be useless but if he starts he has VALUE..

only if you think he'll be "starting" for more than 2 weekscan anyone name a WR that's been in the league as long (7 years) with fewer catches? (47).

Even if not.. Most people dropping players to pick him up are doing guys who are not starting.. Making him a positive even if it's only till bye weeks.

:X Big time sign that Da Raidahs are in even bigger trouble than we all thought... and that means they are in the 10th ring of hell.

Hacksaw is a great radio personality but the reason he has gone from a four hour daily afternoon drive-time show in LA and San Diego to a two hour 10am Saturday-Sunday show in under two years is because of his tendency to speak in hyperbole.Porter and Curry are both physically more gifted than Whitted and the fact that they both practiced with the first team on Tuesday should not be ignored. Whitted will not last and is still not worthy of a roster spot IMO.

The comment about the t-shirt is fact-specific and not susceptible to hyperbole, and it also seems to be confirmed by Porter's demotion. My first paragraph in my prior post agrees with your second paragraph. I don't think Whitted as WR2 lasts very long at all.
