Obama turned the democrat party into a small tent, regional party.

Before Obama, if was difficult to win middle America for the democrats because of their views on abortion and religion.  But it was manageable.  Obama came in and made major pushes to the left on gay marriage, socialized health care, and guns.  To Obama, he felt he was pushing the entire country to the left.  But in reality, middle America did not follow on those issues at ALL.  In Obama's wake, there are now FIVE massive issues driving middle America away from the democrat party.  All five of these issues poll terribly in places they were barely winning.  Now they are losing.

They are a party of California, Oregon, Washington state, and the northeast.  Everywhere else, these five issues wipe out the democrat party.

Maybe the correct move is to just stick with the issues and hope the rest of nation joins them.  That may not ever happen though.  Tough call.

As a country we are swinging back and forth, the presidency and both Houses Democratic in 2008, then we do the same thing for the GOP in 2016, while in 2000 we are almost completely 50/50 divided, while the 90s had two odd three way races for the presidency. IMO we are working against each other way too much and I fear the 2016 results are just another wild swing.
We're not swinging back and forth.  Over the past 60 years, we're slowly shifting to the right.  With each new wave, th republican party crests higher than the last one.  With each new wave, the democrat party crests lower than the last one.  The democrat party took everything in 2008 but it was their weakest peak yet as it only held a couple years before faltering.  After 2016, the republican party has NEVER had more power.

I think we're at a point now where the issues of guns, religion, same sex marriage, obamacare and abortion are ALL hitting the democrats at once.  ALL 5 are unpopular to the point where the democrats may simply be unable to win elections anymore. or if they do, it will take a monumental effort and they'll eek out a tiny win.

I hate that the issues that rile up the masses are ones that hardly have any effect on people's lives on a daily basis.  Why worry about education or the environment?  More important is who our neighbors marry.

Education and the environment are also loser issues for the left

Well, Obamacare has a lot of effect on people and middle america absolutely hates the obamacare tax.

Not sure about Education but in terms of the environment Republicans are a ####### disaster.  I can't understand why the average person would want to align themselves with republicans there.

So are we just accepting this morning's tweets are more insane baseless ramblings from our president?

Crazy that people just brush off that our president babbles on twitter every couple of weeks stuff that isn't based in reality. Just trolling or he's nuts.

That's one.

As much as I hate to say it, guns aren't going anywhere.  The right is too easily manipulated into believing any regulation = all guns will be taken away. Nobody is interfering in religion.  Abortion and gay marriage have nil effect on the people who are so against it on a daily basis.

Both sides have issues they need to drop so we can focus on the big things that effect the country as a whole.
