Odd Couple - CBS reboot (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
I like Matthew Perry, so I decided to watch this, even though I went in with very low expectations. Don't know the other guy's name, but he's hilarious, too, so I thought it might be worth a watch.

Well, I thought it was hilarious. Very surprising. I've added it to my DVR schedule of recordings and hope this gets picked up. I don't watch very many sitcoms anymore, but this one I like a lot. Anyone else catch it?

Decided to give it a shot, it was decent. Will probably check it out again, but won't go out of my way.

It was entertaining enough, might give it a chance. Perry seemed to be slurring a few words, sadly more like a stroke victim then a drunk. Did anyone else notice (or do I owe him an apology?)?

I didn't notice that.

I liked it because he was pretty much just playing an older Chandler Bing. And I'm a huge Friends fan.

I didn't watch (I am a huge fan of the old series), but when I saw the commercials I thought it was odd that Perry was playing the "Oscar" role - would have thought he'd be better suited for "Felix".

Yeah, seems this could be what happens to Chandler if Monica kicked him out. Monica was just a hotter Felix

 I said the same thing last night.

Has a reboot like this EVER worked?

I'd be shocked if it lasts 2 full seasons.
I don't watch it, but Hawaii Five-O has had a good run. I can't think of others unless one considers all the CSI shows to be reboots. Then there are reboots from movies like MASH.

I'm actually surprised there aren't more reboots since the majority of new shows don't last long.

I watched a little between periods of the hockey game. Not like you need to see it from the beginning to get the gist of it since it is a remake.

Very disappointing given the talent that they had at their disposal:

Thomas Lennon

Wendell Pierce

Dave Foley

Why would they remake the Odd Couple yet again? What more needs/can be done with the material? A tired old refrain, but why can't they come up with something new?

Could they reboot Bat Watch please? Or even a new twist, Yoga Pants Watch.

Scratch that last part, I am working in the pilot now. I need to copyright that quick.

BSG

Or are you just talking network TV?
I'm not talking about taking a movie (M*A*S*H) and making a series out of it. I'm talking about taking a show like The Odd Couple, then just remaking the same exact show later on down the line. Same plot, same character names, etc. I honestly don't see how a network can greenlight something like this and throw a bunch of money at it.

FYI - ABC tried an african american reboot in 1982 with Ron Glass as Felix and Demond Wilson as Oscar. It lasted half a season.

I found it interesting that they kept the original theme music to a point but updated everyone's technology.

I was jealous of the TV wall and the line of the night to me was you can have the TV wall or a wife, not both.

Needs to be seen since I am not doing it justice. Show went better than I had expected it to go. They certainly gave it a time slot to survive.

Yeah, they said it was the 2nd best numbers for a comedy premiere this year, but the real test will be in a few weeks when all of the lead ins end. I'm pulling for it. I could use a good comedy in my lineup.

TBBT still has eight new episodes left for the season, so as long as it has it as its lead-in this season, it will have the numbers. However, keeping them if the show sucks is another thing.

Still watching, not sure why.

The guy that plays Felix is good but Perry sucks as Oscar. He's a horrible actor.

watched parts of a couple eps but not must see for me and not really liking Perry in the role. Its basically an excuse for him to just say 1 liners. And I swear he has a lisp or is slurring a lot of his words...

I watched a couple minutes of it the other night. I thought it was pretty bad and had to turn it off. It was the opening scene where Felix was on the exercise ball.

I still enjoy it. Chandler is a little stiff, but maybe they can work on that. Other than that, when it comes to sitcoms, if it can make me laugh a couple of times an episode, I'm good with it.

The show has turned out to be a legitimate hit. It has gotten better each week (though the laugh track is horrible). Perry and Lennon seem to have figured each other out, and hit their lines with a good rhythm. The thing that stands out is how one-dimensional of an actor Perry is. He plays everything at one level/one speed. I still think Lennon is doing an impression of David Hyde Pierce, but he is doing it very well, with a lot more range of character than Perry's Oscar.

Wendell Pierce needs more lines. He's great.

I was flipping and saw part of an episode last week. Holy crap, Matthew Perry is a horrible, horrible actor. Not that he was fantastic on Friends, but what the hell happened?

I agree. Still like it. A couple of segments seem to fall flat, but I think they're finding their rhythm.

Cannot believe how bad Perry is. I can't figure out what he is doing. He's either shouting every line, or delivering ever line like a punch line. It can't just be that he is a horrible actor, because he was solid on friends. Granted, he probably had much better material to work with, but he delivered his lines with a variety of pace and comedic timing, where here, it doesn't matter what he is saying it all as the same tone, and that tone is grating.

He learned that it doesnt matter and he'll always get another shot. Perry has had more bombs than Blair Underwood, but he always gets hired.

I've been watching for nostalgia reasons (original is one of my all-time sit coms), but Perry makes it very difficult to endure. The show has some good lines and Lennon has done a great job (and the supporting cast is good) but I can't believe how atrocious Perry is. I didn't think he was terrible on Friends at all. He's so Wooden and his lines just don't seem natural at all - sounds like he's reading a script.

This is my take - he is trying to play the part of a regular guy, slob and he has no idea how

He's not even a slob. At best he's a bit untidy.

Perry's first show after "Friends" came out a few years ago and was called "Mr. Sunshine". Allison Janney co-starred. The show was very good but only lasted a few episodes. Perry created the show, was the producer, and helped write each episode. I get the sense that he was bitter about having put so much effort into a project but getting no ratings that he's just going through the motions these days.

I agree with the majority. Decent show. It seems like Perry is trying to hold in a big fart every time he speaks.
