odd number of teams? (1 Viewer)

i'm trying to start up a new league (for my son and his classmates). one of his buddies never replied in because his mom kinda' flaked. he's a good kid and i want to include him, so does anyone have any experience with odd number of teams in a league (i.e. 13). i'm thinking a 13 week season where each team will have a bye and playoffs week 14, 15, 16.

TIA

typically in those cases we threw together a scrub team after the draft. just took the top players left via draft dominator or similar cheatsheet and assigned them to a scrub team. best points to date for players not on bye or hurt get started each week. depending on your lineups, we usually added a couple extra skill people because no injury replacement and atleast one backup at the single positions, though could go 3 deep. ( ie. start 1 qb, def, pk, so assign 3 qb, defs and pk to the scrub team )

then just throw that team in the regular season schedule just like any other. randomly assign the division.

adds some extra smack in the league too... since you never would want to lose to the scrub team... lol albeit, the team usually wasn't too bad and does win some games.

also if someone is interested later, they could always take over ownership and possibly give them the #1 waiver slot each week or for a few weeks...

thanks. we already have a smack team built in the league...my other son and his buddy--a couple of 4th graders--are gonna share a team. trust me, none of my older son's friends want to lose to a bunch of 4th graders (the thing is, the 4th graders kinda know their stuff...it's a riot)

We had a guy drop out of the league one year on draft night leaving us with 11 teams. We just used the average score from the other 10 teams as the score for the team with an open opponent.

Yes. Set up a team with no players. Then run schedule as normal. Every week, that team gets assigned the average score from all other teams. So whoever plays the 'phantom' team needs to have a better than average week to win. Its the best way to do it and its harder than you think. Ive seen the phantom team kick ### like a casino. People forget how many wins go out from a lucky match up.

We had a similar problem a few years ago as we booted a bad owner from our league early in the season due to all kinds of issues. So then we were basically stuck with an uneven amount of teams as we didn't want to manage his bad team to the bitter end.

So I just renamed them the dummy team and had his opponents going forward beat the league avg score to post a win when he came up on their sched. No one had a problem with it as it was fair for all. You could do that from the start and just put a scrub team together after everyone drafts. Doesn't matter what they actually score as the team knows what # they have to beat and you do the adjustment on tues morning.

No one wants to lose to the dummies but of course some did. It turned out to be fun. Good luck with whatever you decide.

ETA: Man I type slow. Bringing up the rear here.

 That's awesome.

You could also ditch the head-to-head altogether and roll with an All-Play league. Every week, every team plays every other team. The top scoring team goes 12-0 for that week, the second place team goes 11-1, the third place team goes 10-2, and all the way down to the last place team, which goes 0-12.

This is what we did last year. I liked it.We then went H2H for the playoffs with the Top 6 teams
