Offical Korean War Thread (1 Viewer)

Again, I simply want these fools annihilated. I feel awful for my Grandfather some 80+ years old having fought in this war now having to hear jive about them nuking us.

I think North Korea with the various statements and threats they've made have committed crimes against every American citizen. They're scum; ####### that can't add to the world.

Take them out and the world will be a safer place.
Yes. All 24 million of them are scum and should be annihilated. Stay classy.
North Korea today warned ‘the moment of explosion is near' as it declared that troops have been cleared to attack the U.S. using 'smaller, lighter and diversified' nuclear weapons (April 3rd).

"South Korean and US intelligence authorities have obtained indications the North has moved an object that appears to be a mid-range missile to the east coast," the agency said citing a South Korean government source. The missile is believed to be a mid-range Musudan missile, with a reach of some 3,000 km or more.

"We formally inform the White House and Pentagon that the ever-escalating US hostile policy toward the DPRK and its reckless nuclear threat will be smashed by the strong will of all the united service personnel and people."

"The moment of explosion is near."

I will not be bullied by some Asian #####. He wants to kill me, you, everyone on this message board. I don't have time to decipher what is or isn't a threat.

If I walk up to you and have a banana under my shirt and say I'm going to shoot you with a gun, I am going to face scrutiny by law enforcement whether or not my intent is to shoot or if I really have a gun.

And from a global standpoint, North Korea has already stated they've ended their "ceasefire" with the South and South Korea 'just happens' to be our 6th Largest Trade Partner.

Like it or not, we're involved and now that they're threatening to take the lives of our innocent citizens. I'm pissed.
Get over yourself. They can't do anything to us and this is their usual rhetoric.
Maybe I don't want to live in world where my country, family, and friends gets threatened by some other country's bull####?

We're not handing over any countries to Hitler here. If North Korea attacks South Korea, it's on. And it goes without saying that it's also on in the event of any kind of attack on Japan or the US. KJU almost certainly knows this already, but just in case he doesn't, the current show of force we're putting on display should get him up to speed. I completely understand that when some idiot starts acting like a clown, it's tempting to punch him in the face just on the principle of the thing. But the cost of going to war with NK is pretty high and significantly more complicated than either Iraq or Afghanistan. Unfortunately our best option is to do what we've been doing, which is basically nothing. If we end up tossing him some dollars a few weeks from now, that's a lot better than any military alternative.
I'm not advocating a first strike, I'm saying MAD is dumb and we're lucky to have missile defense systems just in case this guy really is crazy.
MAD has worked for many decades.
Do you think the world would have been more or less safe if the Soviet Union never developed nuclear weapons?
I know that you directed this at NCC, but I'll answer as well. I think the world was ultimately more safe for the half-century or so that the USSR was a counterpoint to the US. The US was frighteningly enthralled with the potential of nuclear weapons coming out of WWII and we likely "needed" an equivalent power to force us not to use them frivolously. Since the USSR fell, however, it's become less clear whether nukes provide some MAD-related stability to the world (this time among a number of actors) or whether they ultimately only increase the risk.
That seems totally counter to pretty much everything we know about how the decision was made to use the bomb, what the fallout was of doing so and what our intent was in using it. I seriously doubt we would have used them in a purely offensive manner.
Read up on Curtis Lemay, the Revolt of the Admirals, MacArthur's request to use nukes against the Chinese in the Korean War, etc. Sixty years ago nuclear weapons were our new toys and we were dying to use them. MAD influenced us not to, thank god.

Even as such, they've stated developing their Nuclear Weapons program is one of the nation's TOP PRIORITIES. So what, we just wait until it becomes a bigger issue? We back down now, how the #### do we back down in a few years WHEN they do have the technology?

Other than a nucular strike against them, can SK hold their own against NK or is it a 1-16 first round game?
SK would win without outside intervention, but it would devastate that peninsula, including Seoul which is like 20 miles from the border. It's not a scenario anyone would want.

It will take them years to produce anything at all and we will still have better everything.

My understanding is that SK would be favored over NK if it was a one-on-one matchup. Which of course it wouldn't be.
Who are they tagging into the match or are you referring strictly to the nukes?eta: thanks for answering, didnt know SK had a powerful military. Especially after hearing all the bluster about NKs forces.
It's classic NATO vs. Soviet Bloc analysis, meaning smaller, better trained and more technologically advanced and tactically flexible versus larger, less trained, less technologically advanced and top-down command and control.

The NK's have numerical advantages in almost everything, but the stuff that has most people bothered is their artillery advantage. They've got an assload of tubes.

It's very possible that North Korea will never develop the ability to deliver a nuclear weapon to US soil. Apparently it's not all that incredibly difficult to build a nuclear device, but developing ballistic missile technology is much harder, and they can't really keep a missile program secret since launches (like missile tests) are easily detectable.

And the idea of a North Korean bomber penetrating US air defenses is just laughable.

Many of them can also reach Seoul and deliver chemical weapons. That is a bigger issue than the nukes in my mind.

I've come back to the conclusion that this is all likely just posturing by North Korea, probably because their intelligence people are claiming that nobody's paying attention to them. If they were to actually start another military conflict, I really don't see any other outcome than North Korea gets curbstomped. Badly.

One of the more worrying things I have read is that Un is struggling with the country's military leaders.

A regime change is going to be a pain to deal with, especially since the civilians are going to be the ones that suffer.

I've read the same speculation, but I'm not sure what that means. Is there any possibility that a military coup, for example, would actually be a good thing?

:goodposting:

People are in doubt about how much he's a figurehead versus the actual leader, and that may well be in flux.

I don't think any of the parties wants to start a war, so the danger is that one gets started by accident. It's a very dangerous game of chicken.

It's a cult of personality built around the Kims, so I have to wonder what the reaction would be of the military and the civilian populace if a military clique took over and announced that to the nation.

I suspect that they'd want him alive as a figurehead if they're in fact the ones leading.

I know nothing about the region or issues really, but read/heard something recently that the military leadership is loyal to China, so if there was a military coup, that would strengthen China further.

...in an extremely minor way.

This type of thinking helped get us into the Iraq War.

There isn't going to be any nucular action involving North Korea. If DPRK launches any nukes, China will kick their ### before we get the chance. They don't want any nucular activity anywhere in their hemisphere, let alone along their borders. And we won't launch a nucular first strike, nor will we launch a nucular response even if junior is stupid enough to do that.

Yeah, not sure i would agree with that.

I would bet any amount of money that our toning down of rhetoric tonight is due to china intervening.

Perhaps, but nobody wants a war in this region. I could just as easily imagine Obama deciding to tone things down a little because he wants to signal that the US has cool heads in charge. No need to automatically read forein influence into it.

it's my un-informed opinion that this is all related to an assassination attempt on Un in March. Un has to demonstrate mastery of his role as supreme commander ASAP by winning support of the military - what better way to do that then poke at the bear?

Let's just hope that his military shows more restraint than they have in the past and don't try to militarily escalate further.

Fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well known is this: Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

So let's say that NK decides to launch a "test" missile. We have to attempt to intercept, right? Or do we just track it and intercept if it is actually headed somewhere?

It's an interesting call to make. The reality is the missile likely has no payload. And if it does end hitting somewhere the damage would be from the weight and momentum. But maybe you shoot it down just to show you can and send a message to those possibly seeking engagement. You have a very aggressive general tied closely to a young, inexperienced(and possibly not in control) leader. Need to be sure everyone understands just what kind of mess they are getting into.

If North Korea launched any sort of a missile right now, without announcing in advance that it was just a test, I think you have to destroy it despite the fact that it escalates things.

Kim enjoyed a series of musical numbers, including "Let us reap a richer bean harvest" and "All servicepersons and people will become human bullets and bombs."

This un guy knows how to party.

Do you really think this would matter at this stage?

When we look at the actual numbers of NK soldiers do we count them as 1:1; the are only like 4'-6" tall after decades of malnutrition.
I think there are degrees of soldiers there.... They likely have a "presidential guard" type force numbering in the thousands that are well fed and the nations elite. Then you likely have close to half that 1.1 million that are lightly trained, malnourished, ill-equipped forces that aren't much threat. Then the balance is probably somewhere in-between. THese are NOT hard numbers obviously... just a guesstimation based on a couple years of random readings and whatnot.

Yeah, I was thinking more of the the scenario that NK announces they are launching a "test", and the missile flies.

Is it even possible to detect if a missile in flight has a payload or not?

Probably not. I think NK has tested missiles during our military exercises with SK before, but doing so this time around would be preposterously stupid and they should really expect a shoot-down.

The best part of all this is if NK fires a test missle, we shoot it down, then he reports that he has blown up the city of Los Angeles and america is cowering in fear... and his people believe him.
