KJU almost certainly knows this already, but just in case he doesn't, the current show of force we're putting on display should get him up to speed. I completely understand that when some idiot starts acting like a clown, it's tempting to punch him in the face just on the principle of the thing. But the cost of going to war with NK is pretty high and significantly more complicated than either Iraq or Afghanistan. Unfortunately our best option is to do what we've been doing, which is basically nothing. If we end up tossing him some dollars a few weeks from now, that's a lot better than any military alternative.

People said the same thing about the Japanese. I think these folks are a lot less brainwashed than all that. I know they are hungry though. Fwiw, Russia's motivation is keeping the other countries in the region nuke free. Both SK and Japan are making noises about pursuing nuclear weapons programs. That would be just as bad for the US as Russia.

I know that you directed this at NCC, but I'll answer as well. I think the world was ultimately more safe for the half-century or so that the USSR was a counterpoint to the US. The US was frighteningly enthralled with the potential of nuclear weapons coming out of WWII and we likely "needed" an equivalent power to force us not to use them frivolously.

Since the USSR fell, however, it's become less clear whether nukes provide some MAD-related stability to the world (this time among a number of actors) or whether they ultimately only increase the risk.

How do you suppose for one minute we were ever going to remain the only nuclear power? Physics works everywhere and the Russians had a program started. It still took them a few years but it's simple backwards engineering to get the bomb when you have a state behind your efforts.

That seems totally counter to pretty much everything we know about how the decision was made to use the bomb, what the fallout was of doing so and what our intent was in using it. I seriously doubt we would have used them in a purely offensive manner.

I don't think there's any question that the US would respond to an attack on SK with anything other than all-out war. Not a nuclear strike, but a full-fledged regime-destroying war like Iraq and Afghanistan. If it really did something stupid, like shelling Seoul, the North Korean regime will be completely annihilated by the US.

Others here undoubtedly know more about the ROK military than I do, but I've always been under the impression that it's solid. South Korea isn't like Japan, where it's almost completely reliant on the US for its military defense. My understanding is that it could hold its own. My understanding is that SK would be favored over NK if it was a one-on-one matchup. Which of course it wouldn't be.

In the early stages NK would have a numbers advantage but the longer it goes the worse it goes for NK. Their equipment just isn't comparable. The estimates are it would take 500k US troops so they would have some time before reinforcements arrived but it wouldn't last long after that. In the interim it's expected the the troops along the DMZ would provide a significant obstacle for NK. If they wanted to invade they really needed to do it 50 years ago when their number advantage would have meant more.

I don't think there's any question that the US would respond to an attack on SK with anything other than all-out war. Not a nuclear strike, but a full-fledged regime-destroying war like Iraq and Afghanistan. If it really did something stupid, like shelling Seoul, the North Korean regime will be completely annihilated by the US.

Others here undoubtedly know more about the ROK military than I do, but I've always been under the impression that it's solid. South Korea isn't like Japan, where it's almost completely reliant on the US for its military defense. My understanding is that it could hold its own. Oh, my mistake. I thought you were referring to NK when you said it wouldn't be a one-on-one matchup, thinking you meant they had someone else to partner with. I originally asked because I was just wondering if SK could win a war with NK without our help, knowing of course we definitely would get involved, was just curious about SK's military might and capabilities. They would get smoked in 24 hrs. Their main threat is their artillery which would take some time to take out. 8 hours of artillery from NK could kill as many people as a nuke would. By the time those guns are stopped the US would have blown every military resource worth anything to hell. Then it's just a matter of how China plays it's hand.

While we are at it we should poke a hole in that stupid dam they built.

Nothing like the South Korean verison of A-1 Abrams tanks going against T-62 tanks. Lets not forget that T-72 tanks were shown as completely obsolute in Iraq and the 62 was top Soviet technology in the early 60s.
