***OFFICAL MINNESOTA TWINS 2010 THREAD*** (1 Viewer)

The Twins jumped from seventh to fifth in baseball in runs scored.

According to MLB.TV, Danny Valencia is the first player ever to hit a grand slam for the first homer of his career off a defending Cy Young winner.

Also, Joe Mauer is the third catcher ever to go 5-for-5 in a game and have at least seven RBI in the same game.

Great game last night by the Twins

Congrats on beating KC.

Some interesting Twins facts:

Carl Pavano's 13 victories are the second-highest single-season total of his career, and the righthanded pitcher has won a whopping 18 games in only 33 starts with the Twins.

The Twins have scored 47 runs and are batting .421 over their past four games.

The Twins have scored at least 10 runs in three consecutive games for the first time since June 11-13, 1967.

Danny Valencia was 4-for-5 with three RBI after going 4-for-4 with four RBI on Monday. He's the first Twins rookie to have back-to-back four-hit games and the last player in franchise history to accomplish the feat was Buddy Lewis for the 1936 Washington Senators.

The last time the Twins have had a three-game stretch of 40 or more runs was April 23-25, 1996.

Twins need to keep playing well, as the Sox are not letting up

GO TWINS

Come on Sox would you just go ahead and lose. We need to get back in first!!

Pavano is going to get PAID in the off season.

Michael Cuddyer went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. In the 17 games since Justin Morneau went down with a concussion and Cuddyer took over at first base, he is batting .362. Before Morneau went down, Cuddyer was batting .261. He has since raised that average to .279.

Another red hot TWIN

Twins SWEEP the Royals today and go 6-1 on this ROAD trip.

Other Twins tidbits:

Twins hit 12 home runs during this 6-1 road trip.

Brian Duensing (4-1) went six innings and gave up two runs on eight hits. Duensing looks like the pitcher needed for the final run of the season

Young has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games and is hitting .439 in July with six homers and 28 RBIs. Since May 21, his 63 RBIs are the most in baseball. Said it before this kid is hot, I mean RED hot :)

Joe Mauer hit his fourth double in three days. Nice to see Joe start hitting with more power.

Twins need to keep the pressure on the White Sox

Young is on pace for 23 HRs, 129 RBI and a .334 batting average. Another home run yesterday. This guy is making a case for MVP.

He should get some votes, but shouldnt be in the top 5 for MVP voting.Cano, Cabrera, Longoria, Youkilis, Hamilton are all above him for sure.

Surging Twins approach trade deadline usual way

By Dave Campbell, AP Sports Writer

MINNEAPOLIS — The All-Star break was a welcomed rest for the Minnesota Twins. It was also quite the revival.

They're only 14 games into the second half, but by outscoring their opponents 97-50 and going 10-4 they've rediscovered their energy and confidence even if the success was perhaps tenuously driven by playing weak teams.

The Twins were a season-high 4 games out of first place at the break. With five wins in a row, they started Thursday with a one-game deficit behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central division.

"I think everything is starting to click," said catcher Joe Mauer, who in just 12 games since the break is batting .404 with nine doubles, two homers and 17 RBIs.

With first baseman Justin Morneau still recovering from a concussion and second baseman Orlando Hudson joining him on the disabled list with a muscle injury on his side, Mauer wasn't the only one who inflated his stats during a 6-1 road trip against the moribund Baltimore Orioles and the reeling Kansas City Royals. Delmon Young, Danny Valencia and Michael Cuddyer were also notably productive.

Young's surge this month is right on par with some of the best work by his MVP-award-winning teammates in recent years. In 24 July games, he is hitting .439 with six homers, 28 RBIs and a rare-air 1.206 OPS rating <emdash /> on-base plus slugging percentage <emdash /> to leap to fourth in the league in batting average and third in RBIs entering Thursday's games.

Last May, Mauer hit .414 with 11 homers and 32 RBIs. In the same month, Morneau hit .361 with nine homers and 29 RBIs.

After more than 1 underwhelming seasons trying to get on track with the Twins, Young has suddenly slapped his name on the list of AL MVP candidates. Adding a strong final two months of the 2009 season to the first four months of this year gives Young a solid case to present, with a .324 average, 23 homers and 112 RBIs during that span.

"It's good to see a lot of things coming together," general manager Bill Smith said. "We've gotten good pitching. Our offense certainly has been fantastic over the last week. It's been very encouraging. We've got a lot of baseball left to play, and hopefully we'll bring that same level of play back home."

Following their off day Thursday, the Twins face another last-place foe Friday in the Seattle Mariners. Baseball's non-waiver trade deadline is Saturday afternoon, though next month also provides a chance to add players from elsewhere through the waiver process.

Starting pitching has appeared to be the biggest need this summer while Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn and Kevin Slowey stumbled, but with Cliff Lee, Dan Haren and Roy Oswalt now off the market there aren't any top-tier aces left even if the Twins were able to provide the right package in return. Ted Lilly could be a target, if the Chicago Cubs see a deal they like.

With strong starts in the last week by Baker and Slowey and Brian Duensing effectively replacing Blackburn in the rotation, the Twins now don't look in as dire need of help there as they did. Especially with Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano leading the way.

Despite a 3.16 ERA by the bullpen, the best in the league, the Twins could probably find another reliever or two more useful. Duensing's move to a starting role created a void, and closer Jon Rauch has a 5.40 ERA in nine appearances this month.

"Our lineup is probably the best lineup that we've had in a couple of years," Smith said. "If we can get Morneau and Hudson healthy that'll be huge for us. Our starting pitching is coming around. Our bullpen has a pretty good track record this season. We like this club a lot, but if we can make this club better we'll do it."

That's the standard line from the Twins, who have rarely made a major move at the deadline. Last year, they were more active in August, acquiring Rauch and Pavano.

"We were fortunate last year. They were really good contributors to this club down the stretch," Smith said. "A lot of players get run through on waivers, and if the advantage to that is that you're dealing with one team instead of dealing with all 29."

Wilson Ramos to the Nationals for Capps. Still trying to sort out my feelings on this one, but I don't care for it much.
I"m not sure I like this trade. And I see they plan to use Capps to close :lmao: I thought Rauch was doing a good job converted 21 of 25. Also don't like giving up one of their better prospects it would be one thing if it was for a SP.

Twins get closer Capps for Ramos

The Twins sent catching prospect Wilson Ramos to Washington in exchange for Matt Capps, who will take over as closer.

By LA VELLE E. NEAL III, Star Tribune

The Twins have been unable to improve the front end of their pitching staff via trade but on Thursday, they strengthened the back end.

All-Star closer Matt Capps is coming to the Twin Cities after the Twins and Nationals agreed to a trade in which top catching prospect Wilson Ramos was sent to Washington. The Nationals also acquired minor league lefthander Joe Testa in the deal; the Twins will receive $500,000.

"It's a big step for us to be able to add a pitcher of this caliber," Twins General Manager Bill Smith said Thursday night.

Capps, 26 and in his first season with the Nationals, is 3-3 with a 2.74 ERA and 26 saves in 30 chances. He will be installed as the Twins' new closer, with Jon Rauch, who has 21 saves in 25 chances, moving back to a setup role with Jesse Crain and Matt Guerrier.

With the Twins striking out in their attempts to land starting pitchers such as Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Ted Lilly, the club switched to a search for bullpen help. The teams have discussed a Capps deal for several weeks.

A source close to Capps on Thursday said the Twins, Yankees, Braves and White Sox were interested in Capps, who pitched a perfect ninth inning Thursday to collect his 26th save in Washington's victory over Atlanta.

Ramos, who turns 23 on Aug. 10, was pulled from the lineup moments before Class AAA Rochester was to play Gwinnett on Thursday. In 71 games with the Red Wings, Ramos batted .241 with five homers and 30 RBI. He appeared in seven games with the Twins when Joe Mauer was slowed because of a heel injury and batted .296, including a four-hit game in his major league debut. Ramos is strong-armed and has a power bat, making him the Twins' best trade chip, given Mauer's presence.

Capps is 22-22 in five-plus seasons with a 3.48 ERA and 93 saves. He was not offered a contract by Pittsburgh during the offseason and signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Washington. Capps has one more year of arbitration eligibility left, meaning the Twins could have control of him through the 2011 season.

"Having him for 2011 was critical," Smith said. "We would not have had interest in having him for just two months."

Rauch is a free agent after the season, and closer Joe Nathan will be coming off Tommy John surgery. This gives the Twins an option if Nathan needs more time to recover.

Rauch has closed for the Twins as Nathan's replacement. While his production and competitiveness have been admirable, only five of Rauch's saves have been considered "clean" by retiring the side in order.

"I can't say enough good things about Jon Rauch," Smith said.

The addition of Capps also helps the void created when lefthander Brian Duensing moved from the bullpen to the rotation.

Testa, a reliever, was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He began 2010 at Class AA New Britain, going 1-4 with a 8.25 ERA in 21 games. He was moved to Class A Fort Myers, where he went 1-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 15 games.

Good deal for the Twins, Ramo was never going play for the Twins with Joe M. Rauch is better as a set up man, and who knows if Joe N. can ever pitch at his previous level. At only 26 years old Capps can be the closer of the future for the Twins.

There's no doubt the bullpen needed help, and Capps is better than Rauch, but I don't think he's significantly better - certainly not better to a level where they should have given up Ramos for him.

Do you think Capps will close or is it still Rauch's job?
In this article it says Capps will take over right away.
I just traded for Capps in my keeper league two weeks ago. Chances he is the closer next year if he pitches well down the stretch?

Punto hits DL; Plouffe promoted; Blackburn sent to Rochester; Capps arrives; Morneau update

Last update: July 30, 2010 - 4:35 PM

Minneapolis Star & Tribune

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told ESPN1500 today that Nick Punto is likely headed to the DL with a pulled hamstring, and that Nick Blackburn is likely headed to Class AAA Rochester to start.

No official word on those moves yet, but I'll post the news when we have it.

Matt Capps is here, wearing No. 55.

Seattle went 3-1 against the Twins at Safeco Field two months ago, but the Twins have to feel good about having six more games against the Mariners on their schedule (including a three-game set in Seattle late next month).

Seattle is 6-20 in July. The Mariners have lost the opening game in each of their past seven series. King Felix pitches on Saturday, never a fun assignment for the opponent, and lefthander Luke French pitches Sunday. The Twins will look to continue their roll against last-place teams after going 6-1 on their road trip to Baltimore and Kansas City.

Update: Punto officially lands on DL with strained left hamstring. Trevor Plouffe was promoted to take Punto's roster spot, and Blackburn was sent to AAA Rochester, making room on the active roster for Capps.

Justin Morneau said is making progress and took some swings off a tee today but there is no timetable for his return from a concussion, suffered July 7. (corrected)

Capps did a group interview, seems like a great guy. Rauch declined interview requests, saying he has relayed his thoughts to Gardenhire. More on that after Gardenhire's daily press briefing.

Update: Morneau said, "Activity has been pretty limited, but we’re kind of increasing slowly every day. We went through the warm-up today like we normally do, stretched and that kind of stuff, played some catch, took some swings off a tee, 20-25 swings. ... It’s felt pretty good so far, but the problems really haven’t been during activities, it’s been a couple hours after, so kind of waiting to see how the rest of the day reacts, and if it goes good, we’ll do a little bit more tomorrow.

"I think I’ve set goals as this thing's been going. I think that’s put more stress on me than -- I originally wanted to be back after the All-Star break, and I was kind of trying to rush things a little bit, and then trying to be back when it was time to come off the DL [July 23]. ... But now I’ve come to terms that if we’ve taken this long, we’re going to wait until it’s better and we’re not going to rush back, when it’s better it’s better, and we’ll be happy and we’ll be out there for the rest of the season playing."

Looks like the writing is on the wall for Nathan. To bad as he was one my favorites.
If Nathan comes back and can pitch Capps will be his set-up guy. This is a move for this year, with insurance if Nathan comes back strong. Your comment is baffling.
I think you meant to say "with insurance if Nathan doesn't come back strong"I'm not saying Nathan wont be given a chance. Before the injury he was one of the best closers in the game. But Capps is 9 years younger. If he preforms well down the stretch you never know. Nathan will be 36 when next season starts.

Also Nathan is only signed threw 2011 so I'm sure the Twins will be looking to get younger at the closer position.

Like I said I'm a big Nathan fan and would love to see him close for the Twins for a few more years but change happens.

I can undestand making a move for this year as well but it's not like Rauch has been struggling. Sure they could use help in the BP put I thought they might add a left hand.

Not sure what is so baffling.

Another nice win tonight 6 in a row. :bag: Plus Capps gets right to work with his first Twins save.

Go Twins

Capp's looked very good last night. With Capp closing, Gardy was playing the bullpen to perfection, which should help . Capp's fastball averages 93.9 miles per hour, according to FanGraphs.com, and his slider is nasty also.

Twins need to keep the pressure on the White Sox

DH Jim Thome's homer Friday night gave him 1,598 career RBI, moving him out of a tie with George Brett and into 32nd place on the all-time list. It was Thome's 13th homer this season and 577th in his career.

Big Jim has been a nice pick up by the Twins this year.

Can you expand on that? Do you see my side at all? I just think its going be interesting how it all shakes out.

I not sure what happens to Nathan, he's getting old, but low miles in terms of innings pitched. I think if Nathan is back to his pre injury form, the Twins will be trading him about this time next year, I think next year is the last year of his contract, so the timing would be right.

The original quote made it sound like you think they acquired Capps because they are done with Nathan. There is zero way that is true because Nathan is 10x the pitcher Capps is. I do agree that they probably like having a little security in case Nathan can't return to form, but if he is all the way back next year he has zero worries about losing his job. The other possibility is that Capps is lights out, they sign him long-term, and then look to trade Nathan, but I think that is very unlikely.

So yes, I do you see your side, it was just the wording that threw me.

Great game tonight as the Twins win their SEVENTH consecutive win and beat KING Felix. Two hits for Young and three hits for smoken Joe M.

With the Sox getting beat up tonight it doesn't get any better

Great SWEEP today led by Liriano's 11 strikeouts, and 7 innings of shut out pitching. Winning our eighth straight game is a new season high winning streak.

Go Twins

The same old new Liriano excels

The lefty provided a strong start, as usual for 2010 and reminiscent of his best season, 2006.

By AMELIA RAYNO, Star Tribune

When Francisco Liriano walked off the Target Field mound Sunday, there was no grand acknowledgement of his fourth consecutive solid start, nor the 11 strikeouts that nearly matched his career high of 12. It wasn't that the crowd was ungrateful for his quality labor. It's just that in a season when Liriano has challenged as staff ace, a good start has nearly become expected.

Afterward, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire praised Liriano's two-seam fastball as "fantastic" and "unbelievable" and gushed about the lefthander's ability to set up his slider.

The fans have come to expect it, because of the results he has brought. Of his 20 starts, 15 have been quality, and in his past four he has pitched at least seven innings, and given up no runs in three of those. But with Sunday's 4-0 victory over the woeful Mariners, Liriano's seven-inning start brought him two-thirds of an inning short of matching his career-high major league innings count (136 2/3, last season). And it was only Aug. 1.

The stunted season is a trend that has followed Liriano around since he broke into the big leagues in 2005, with every year since being cut short because of fatigue, injuries or struggles sending him to the minor leagues.

His stellar 2010 season has harkened comparisons to the best parts of his electrifying 2006 rookie campaign.

"It was a different story in 2006," Liriano said. "I was just throwing fast, and now I'm pitching."

That All-Star year, however, saw Liriano go on the disabled list in August because of forearm inflammation, and he lasted only two innings in his September return before undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery that cost him all of 2007.

Upon his return in 2008, Liriano threw nearly 200 innings between the majors and minors, but he struggled throughout 2009 before ending up on the disabled list because of a tired arm in August. When he returned last September, he was used only in relief, and his season totals were an unsightly 5-13 with a 5.80 ERA.

"Physically, I don't get tired pitching and my arm feels stronger every start," said Liriano, who improved to 10-7.

So strong, in fact, that after seven innings, he almost seemed surprised to be done.

"When he came off the field, he asked how many pitches he had and Andy [Rick Anderson] told him he had 109, and he said, 'That's it?' " Gardenhire said. "And that tells you how strong he is right now, coming back from where he has been."

As the Twins head down the stretch and Liriano faces uncharted territory in his big-league workload, only time will tell whether that strength will hold up.

Sunday it held the team in a game where Twins batters looked flummoxed by Mariners starter Luke French, at least until the sixth inning. With one out, the bases loaded and the game still scoreless, Jason Kubel caromed a line drive off the right-center field wall to send Alexi Casilla, Delmon Young and Michael Cuddyer home. One batter later, Danny Valencia, who hit .453 in July, followed with a single to left that enabled Kubel to join them.

"Their guy was tough, he had a great changeup today," Gardenhire said of French (0-2). "... We had the big inning, and it's all it took the way our pitchers threw the ball today."

Jon Rauch and Matt Guerrier picked up where Liriano left off, each striking out two in hitless ball. As Casey Kotchman, the final batter of the game, came up to the plate, the sellout crowd of 40,374 rose to watch the Twins complete the three-game sweep and increase their winning streak to a season-high eight games.

TWINS UPDATE

The Twins are riding their first eight-game winning streak since they won 10 in a row in June 2008. Their pitchers have a 1.60 ERA and have given up only two home runs and 21 walks in their past 11 games. They held the hapless Mariners scoreless for the final 21 innings of this weekend's three-game sweep. ... Michael Cuddyer had his 15-game hitting streak broken Sunday, but Delmon Young extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Danny Valencia went 2-for-4 Sunday, giving him 22 hits since the All-Star break. ... The Twins are 6-2 when Jason Repko starts. He is 9-for-26 in his past six games with three doubles, two homers, four RBI and seven runs scored.

Why can't Cuddyer ever lay off that low and away breaking ball with 2 strikes on him? He chases it every single time, and it's never even close to a strike. From Gagne to Hunter to Cuddyer the Twins have built quite a tradition of being unable to lay off that pitch.

1B Justin Morneau did light work only at Target Field, manager Ron Gardenhire said. Morneau reported to the team that he felt worse Monday than he did Sunday, when he was supposed to take batting practice but ultimately opted not to because it was family day at Target Field.

Need the second half of M & M back

Morneau (concussion) worked out and hit in the indoor batting cage at Target Field on Tuesday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He had "a good day," said manager Ron Gardenhire.

Well he should be fresh for the stretch run when he comes back.
