Michael Cuddyer made a couple of tough plays look easy at first base during the White Sox series, including a move to his right to scoop up a grounder for the final out of Wednesday's game. ... The Twins are 15-5 against the AL West, and they took three of four games from the Angels in the season-opening series in Anaheim. Their next 10 games are against L.A., Texas and Seattle. The four-game series at Texas early next week is huge in terms of postseason pecking order. ...Before he homered Wednesday, Mauer joined teammate Denard Span and Detroit's Austin Jackson as the only major leaguers (minimum 150 at-bats) with at least a .300 batting average at home and no home runs.

One reason the Angels moved Torii Hunter from center to right field was to make room for speedy rookie Peter Bourjos. Although Bourjos has made several excellent catches, his batting average slipped to .122 and he was benched Wednesday, then went 1-for-4 Thursday. The Angels don't want him to lose confidence. ... Trevor Bell, Saturday's starter,once was ranked as the best 14-year-old in the country by Baseball America and was selected by the Angels in the supplemental round in 2005. He throws a fastball that reaches the mid-90s, slider and changeup. ... Mike Napoli is the 18th catcher in major league history to have three consecutive 20-homer seasons. ... Haren is 1-3 since being traded from Arizona, but the Angels have averaged only 2.6 runs in his starts.

Progress is slow for Morneau

Morneau still experiences some fogginess at the end of the day, so he can't take the next step in his return from a concussion suffered July 7 until has a couple of symptom-free days.
He hasn't done any on-field running yet, instead doing cardio work inside the clubhouse on a treadmill and other machines. Running on the field would be one of the next steps once he feels better. He has been able to sit in the dugout during games of the current homestand.
The key is being patient, although Morneau sounded a little frustrated during a brief chat in the clubhouse Saturday.
The Twins won't address the possibility of Morneau missing the rest of the season.
"I don't think about it," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I let him come to the ballpark and do his thing."
One possible obstacle could be if Morneau needed to go on a rehabilitation assignment in September, when the minor league seasons are over.
"I can get Jack Morris out of the [radio broadcast] booth to throw to Morneau," Gardenhire quipped. "I promise you, I'll find pitchers to throw to him."
Impatiently patient
Denard Span is averaging 3.82 pitches per plate appearance, trailing only Jason Kubel and Joe Mauer among the regulars. But after walking 17 times in April he's drawn 30 walks since and only four this month (including two Saturday).
This from someone who had a career .390 on-base percentage entering the season. His on-base percentage entering Saturday was .336, and good leadoff hitters should be pushing .370 in that category.
"The way they are pitching me, the word is out that I usually take the first pitch and I've been watching strike one right down the middle," Span said. "After that, then I'm getting the whole kitchen sink thrown at me.
"It seems like every time I'm up there it is 0-2, or 1-2. It's been hard to hit like that."
Span recently has tried being more aggressive earlier in the count. Gardenhire said the good thing about the situation is that Span has realized how he's being approach and can make the adjustment.
"I think he's learned that if he gets pretty good pitches to hit early in the count to not be afraid to take a whack at it," Gardenhire said, "and then he'll get back to drawing walks."
After talking about not walking, Span drew a walk on six pitches during his first at-bat on Saturday, then worked a seven-pitch at-bat before flying out in the second inning. He then walked in the sixth inning, making it the first time he's had two walks in a game since July 27.

J.J. Hardy started at short on Saturday but, because the team wants him to be careful with his oft-injured left wrist, there's a chance Alexi Casilla will start there on Sunday.

He's having a rough season, no doubt. I've seen enough of him though to think that he's not just "another guy" that they can easily replace with guys in their system. If he could ever stop leaving pitches up and get control of the mental part of his game I think he'd be a pretty effective guy. That 7th was very frustrating. Casilla misses a 3-run shot by about a foot, and then they can't get either runner home with no outs. Can't really argue with the call at the plate since it was so close, but Valencia also looked like he got around the tag. They needed to come out of that inning with the lead, that was the difference.FYI - this is a four game series.

LOVE IT. He's not the best, but he doesn't have to be because he won't be asked to close. He's absolute murder on lefties though, and with Mijares and Mahay hurt, and the other dude they picked up (Flores) a LH who can't get lefties out, he fits in great. And for a player-to-be-named later? Excellent move.

Fuentes, 35, was 4-1 with a 3.52 ERA this season for the Angels with 23 saves. He's blown four saves this season, but lefties are hitting just .132 off him and .213 for his career.
He led the league with 48 saves last season and is 22-33 with a 3.48 ERA and 186 saves for his career. The Twins now have a college of closers with Fuentes, Matt Capps (26 saves with Washington, six with the Twins) and Jon Rauch (21 saves).

The Twins' newest acquisition got a save in his first appearance.

SEATTLE - Lefthander Brian Fuentes loves all the benefits that come with being a closer.
"I had my routine where the score was going to dictate when I stretched and warmed up,'' he said. "I guess you get pampered and primped as a closer, drinking Gatorade until it is time to stretch.''
When it's time to put out the fire -- which is what setup men often have to do -- Fuentes will have to jump right into action.
"I've been closing for a long time,'' said Fuentes, who has 186 career saves, "so it is going to take a little while to get back in that setup mentality. I'm here to help this team win in different forms.''
Fuentes ended up putting out the fire -- and closing -- in his first appearance as a Twin, replacing starter Nick Blackburn with two outs in the ninth Saturday and getting a game-ending strikeout.
"This is exactly why we went out and got this guy,'' Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "To get a big out.''
Fuentes was traded to the Twins on Friday from the Angels for a player to be named later or cash. He wasn't getting consistent work in Los Angeles, where the Angels are out of the race, and saw signs that he could be dealt.
Matt Capps will remain the closer, but Fuentes, who now has 24 saves this season, can spot close when Capps needs rest -- or if menacing lefthanded hitters are batting in the ninth. Fuentes' presence aids the other setup men in the bullpen.
"What it does, more than anything else, is it allows you not to kill a Jesse Crain, pitching him every night in every situation,'' Gardenhire said. "Matty Guerrier, same thing.''
Fuentes understands his new role and will embrace it to help the Twins reach the postseason.
"I love to close. It's what I do,'' he said. "I love winning even more.''

The Twins have seven players on the disabled list -- Joe Nathan, Clay Condrey, Justin Morneau, Jose Mijares, Nick Punto, Ron Mahay and Kevin Slowey. That gives them seven spots they can alter after playoff rosters are set Aug. 31
Since Mahay is on the disabled list, the Twins could add Jose Morales and take Jeff Manship off the 25-man roster for the postseason. That's why it's not imperative Morales be on the roster before the end of the month.
Once the postseason begins, all moves have to be pitcher for pitcher and position player for position player.
The Twins have been discussing postseason rosters and September callups and are expected to meet Monday to finalize plans.
Morales is expected to be called up when rosters are allowed to expand Wednesday to give the Twins catching depth. Lefthander Glen Perkins, who was sent down Friday to make room for Fuentes, will be back once Class AAA Rochester's season ends on Sept. 6.
Infielder Trevor Plouffe and pitchers Anthony Slama and Pat Neshek are on the 40-man roster and could be called up -- although there appears to be a split camp on Neshek. Jacque Jones would have to be put on the 40-man roster to be called up.

Indications are that manager Ron Gardenhire will take a hard line with Hudson on Tuesday if he isn't ready. "I'm not going to start him back out there if he's going to be coming out of ballgames," Gardenhire said. "He'll have to wait until he gets healthy." ... Denard Span has a five-game hitting streak during which he's batting .364. ... Michael Cuddyer's homer Sunday was his first since Aug. 10 against the White Sox at Chicago. ... Brian Fuentes hasn't given up a home run to the 45 lefthanded batters he has faced this season. ... The Twins are only 4-3 when Brian Duensing starts. ... In addition to being one homer behind Mark McGwire's 583 for ninth all time, Jim Thome is one walk behind Frank Thomas' 1,667 for ninth as well.

One big reason why is that the Tigers, even minus the injured Magglio Ordonez, still believed they are relevant in the division race. They have gone 3-3 since Damon declined to waive his no-trade clause. ... Miguel Cabrera enters second in the American League in batting average, second in home runs and leading with 107 RBI. Of the three categories, the toughest for him to win figures to be the home run title, because Toronto's Jose Bautista leads him by nine and hasn't shown any signs of cooling off. Cabrera is the first Tigers player with three consecutive seasons of at least 300 total bases ... Ordonez is 37 and has done a lot for Detroit in six years there. Has he done enough to earn a contract extension? ... Ryan Raburn has eight homers this month after entering August with two for the season.

Morneau not with teammates

Justin Morneau's chances of returning this season seemed even slimmer Tuesday.
The Twins first baseman, who has been out since July 7 with a concussion, was not at Target Field as the team opened a new homestand against Detroit.
"The doctors told him to stay home," Manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's not going to come in until Friday."
Morneau, 29, had been taking batting practice and working out at Target Field, with occasional days off, throughout August, but he continued to experience concussion symptoms.
With 30 games remaining in the regular season, time is running short. The minor league regular season ends Monday, which would make it tougher for Morneau to get back into game shape, even if he starts feeling better.
"He does his cardio work [at home] -- the whole package," Gardenhire said. "He's been doing his workouts, and he's following the doctor's orders, doing exactly what they want him to do."

General Manager Bill Smith said he's still hopeful Morneau can return this season.

Two are promoted
Beginning Wednesday, teams can expand their active rosters to include anybody on their 40-man roster, and the Twins have promoted catcher Jose Morales and infielder Trevor Plouffe to join them from Class AAA Rochester.
The Twins plan more promotions after Rochester's season ends Monday.
"Maybe one or two position players at most," Gardenhire said. "And maybe one or two pitchers at most."
The Twins have four pitchers at Rochester who have spent time in the big leagues this season: Alex Burnett, Pat Neshek, Glen Perkins and Anthony Slama. But with 12 pitchers already on the active roster, and two more expected back from the disabled list -- Kevin Slowey and Jose Mijares -- they'll have plenty of arms available down the stretch.

• Gardenhire on Chicago's acquisition of Manny Ramirez: "We know the guy's a force, and we just have to see how everything works out for him, and how he does for them. Definitely, if he comes in and he's swinging good and healthy, he makes them a better baseball team."

Justin Morneau's chances of returning this season seemed even slimmer Tuesday.
The Twins first baseman, who has been out since July 7 with a concussion, was not at Target Field as the team opened a new homestand against Detroit.
"The doctors told him to stay home," Manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's not going to come in until Friday."
Morneau, 29, had been taking batting practice and working out at Target Field, with occasional days off, throughout August, but he continued to experience concussion symptoms.
With 30 games remaining in the regular season, time is running short. The minor league regular season ends Monday, which would make it tougher for Morneau to get back into game shape, even if he starts feeling better.
"He does his cardio work [at home] -- the whole package," Gardenhire said. "He's been doing his workouts, and he's following the doctor's orders, doing exactly what they want him to do."
