**Official** 2009 Dallas Cowboys Thread (1 Viewer)

Cowboys signed LB Tearrius George.

George was waived by the Dolphins on Monday. He was on the Cowboys' practice squad for most of 2008 before signing with the Saints late in the year. The Cowboys needed a linebacker with Brandon Williams (knee) out for the year and Stephen Hodge (knee) sidelined.

It certainly is nice to get all of the misconstrued reports and misconceived notions out of the way. Broken collarbones and video board issues and all of that.

Good lord, the media is just dying to get a story out of Dallas, aren't they? Everybody jumping the gun on every little thing, ...I'm actually laughing right now.

O.K., straight face. :lmao:

I'm finally going to be taking in a game experience at the new Cowboys stadium tomorrow night. Scheduling conflicts sidetracked me last week. No, I won't be in the press box, maybe next year. I want to take this occasion to stroll the place anyway. Check it out.

If anybody else is planning on attending, give me a shout. I'll PM you my cell phone number and maybe we can meet up.

Or if you see somebody in a Footballguys shirt and a beer in his hand, that might just be me. Cheers!

WR Isaiah Stanback - Most of us who have been watching throughout OTAs, mini-camp and the three weeks in San Antonio are pretty sure undrafted rookie Kevin Ogletree makes this team. But there's a chance the Cowboys keep six receivers, and the guy who's borderline is Stanback. The Cowboys have spent two years transitioning him to wide receiver, and he has to prove in a game that it's not time to give up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think most of us would fall in line with this. I get the sense that tonight's game may very well be his last chance to really show something. The Cowboys will be substituting various players throughout the first 3 quarters for an opportunity to see how they perform with the first string on both sides of the ball.

With Roy out and possibly Hurd, Stanback may never see or find a better opportunity. Then again, if the Cowboys only wish to keep 5 receivers, this could also be an opportunity to (try to) showcase him with the hopes of garnering a late round pick for him rather than cutting him. They currently have no fifth round pick next April, but that is probably wishful thinking. A 6th or 7th would suffice.

I don't know that this roster will have room for 6 receivers. When you consider they will be carrying 3 QBs, 2 kickers, along with a punter and long-snapper, I don't know. Add to that a FB and 3 TEs. Then you have the depth issue at LB, not to mention the OL or even the DL. We already know they'll be keeping a slew of DBs (and they still won't have room for Watkins). All of that really puts the squeeze on the WR numbers. I would be very surprised to see them find room for 6.

Probably 7th round pick Manuel Johnson. 1. Williams

2. Crayton

3. Hurd

4. Austin

5. Ogletree

6. Stanback or Johnson

ETA: If you meant a bubble player from the team as a whole, I have no idea at this point. I might guess an OL. I would suspect that at this point the Cowboys have an idea of how many players they want to roster on offense and how many they want to roster on defense. So if they decided to keep a 6th WR, Stanback or not, the cut to make room would come from that side of the ball. Just my 0.02 on that.

Injury update from last night's game:

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/news.cfm...9982B96315BB664

The Cowboys defensive depth took a big hit in Saturday night's 20-13 preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers when three players left the game with injury, most notably rookie safety Mike Hamlin, who suffered a broken wrist and will miss six weeks, he said.

Also injured were rookie linebacker Jason Williams (ankle sprain and quad bruise) and third-year corner/safety Alan Ball (neck strain).

Hamlin broke his wrist while trying to bust up the wedge on kickoff coverage, he said, and will be the third Cowboys 2009 draftee to miss significant time this season. Linebacker Brandon Williams (torn MCL) and offensive tackle Robert Brewster (torn pectoral muscle) both suffered season-ending injuries.

"It seems like all our draft choices are the ones getting banged up pretty good," said head coach Wade Phillips.

While Hamlin was taken to the locker room, Ball was being attended to on the field by trainers, who held his head and neck steady while checking him over. Ball, who classified his injury as more of a stinger, said that was more precautionary than anything.

"I didn't feel as bad as it looked," Ball said.

Williams was also grateful that his injury turned out to be less serious than he thought. The rookie inside linebacker initially suffered the thigh bruise early in his first defensive series, and then was "rolled up" on during 49ers running back Kory Sheets' one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Williams said he's dealt with similar injuries in the past, and that his ankle improved after he left the field. X-rays on his ankle were negative, although he said he'll be reevaluated Sunday.

"When I first went down, I didn't feel it pop or anything, but I just felt real bad," Williams said. "On the way in, it kind of loosened up a little bit. It started swelling as soon as I took the tape off."

Hamlin may have set his own return date six weeks in the future, but the timetable for Williams' and Ball's injuries is unknown. Both of them missing the team's final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on Friday would hardly come as a surprise considering the Cowboys' cautious handling of injured players in the past.

Since most teams rest their starters during the final preseason game, young players like Ball, Williams and Hamlin usually get more playing time. Williams wants to play Friday, but he understands that his health comes first.

"I'm more concerned about my health right now than I am about playing in the Minnesota game," he said. "If they decide to hold me out just to keep me healthy, then I'm all for it."

If Ball's or Williams' injuries cause either to miss any extended time, the Cowboys could have some depth issues at cornerback, safety and inside linebacker.

The Cowboys were already short at inside linebacker going into Saturday's game with rookie Stephen Hodge still recovering from an off-season knee scope. Fourth-year veteran Bobby Carpenter is the immediate backup to starters Bradie James and Keith Brooking. With Hodge and Williams out, journeyman linebacker Matt Stewart would be the only remaining healthy body at the position.

As for safety and cornerback, Ball was running with the second team at both positions, and with Hamlin out, his absence would vault rookie Mike Mickens to second-team cornerback and would also leave fellow rookie DeAngelo Smith as a second-team safety. Mickens has struggled since training camp, and Smith is new to the safety position.

Phillips said the team already felt the crunch of depth issues in Saturday's loss.

"Ball and Hamlin both went out and we couldn't play our dime or our third down sub-defenses and that put us in a bind as far as being able to stop them at the end of the ball game," Phillips said.

Second-year running back Tashard Choice also left the game briefly, although he just had the wind knocked out of him, and was later seen joking with teammates on the sideline.

Is there any possibility in Dallas trying to acquire Marshall? I know he's been a butthead in Denver so it's not like there is not some baggage. What would he cost, draft picks etc?
Rumor is a 1st and 4th or 1st and 5th. I think you could probably get him for a 1st rounder. I dont think Dallas is interested in acquiring Marshall as this whole season they have moved on from distractions. Also Marshall is looking for a large contract something to the tune of 6-7 years 42mil + do you really want to give that guy a long term deal? Didnt we learn our lesson with TO, lets hope.
It's not just the cost of acquisition, it's also the fact that Marshall wants a new contract, and you can guess what level of pay he wants. And then of course there's his off-field problems and the fact that he's generally a head case, and your team made it a point just months ago to ship out a WR head case to make a statement about being a unified team rather than a collection of prima donnas. Just my $.02, but I don't see Marshall going to Dallas. Then again, Jerry has surprised before.

Well doesn't this suck? I say we run triple reverses on each offensive play in the final preseason game to use as much time as possible and shorten the game. Thoughts?

Had pretty good seats at the game last night. Lower level in the corner of the end zone. Section 121. Row 21.

Face value is $89.00. Got it for $50.00. Not bad at all.

As for the stadium itself- impressive. Both inside and out. I would venture to say that it's "bigger than a stadium."

In many ways.

A lot of natural light does give it an open feel to it, even with the roof closed. That portion of the roof is translucent. Pretty cool looking.

The Ring of Honor hasn't been unveiled yet. Kind of a bummer not to see it.

As for the video board, I'll say this: You don't miss anything. I understand why some have said it may be distracting (for the fans).

You get accustomed to it pretty quick though. You get a feel for when to watch the field and when to watch the board.

10 punts in the game, and none of them really even came close to hitting it. It's much narrower than I had pictured in my mind. It's vertically V-shaped, and the bottom width of it is within the hashmarks on the field. So it's really not going to get in the way as much as people think, if at all. I saw where 49ers punter Andy Lee said you can hit it if you try, which he did in pre-game warmups, but you have to hit it pretty good (the ball). He said there were also times he tried to hit it (pre-game) but missed. I think we'll continue to see punters hitting it in warm-ups for a couple of reasons. No. 1 being the challenge of it, but no. 2 and more importantly, just to get a feel for what kind of kick it takes to hit it and gain a feel for how much height they have to work with. Again, I think that for the majority punters will learn that it's really not going to get in their way.

As for noise: I don't know what the attendance was, but it looked like it was nearly soldout. It can get loud in there though, even with it being preseason. I can only imagine how loud it will be for that home opener against the Giants, especially if it's all closed up. I would figure the roof and the end zones will be closed for that one at least. Advantage- Dallas.

Cheers! :banned:
You don't think the video screen possibly getting in the way of a football game is a story?

Story? YesIssue? No

Here's what ESPN's Matt Mosley (formerly of The Dallas Morning News) took from last night's game.

I think I'm pretty much in line with his observations.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfceast/0-13-16...-we-learn-.html
As a Jones owner, I liked these quotes -"How dynamic is Felix Jones? I think he's on the verge of becoming one of the most elusive running backs in the league. He almost broke a 94-yard touchdown in the first half. He eluded a defender at the line of scrimmage and then he froze another player before darting into a clearing. (Shades of Tony D. in Minneapolis). The safety made a shoestring tackle on Jones, but it was still an exciting run. He's one of those rare players who can make a run of any distance seem entertaining."

&

"It was interesting to see Marion Barber do all the legwork on the Cowboys' touchdown drive and then get replaced by Jones near the goal line. Jones looks more and more like a featured back to me every day. He just doesn't have a weakness. I was impressed with how he lowered his shoulder and banged his way into the end zone."

I'm hoping that you guys take it to the Felix Jones Spotlight thread. I've seen what happens with some other folks and Switz on this topic. I don't think we need it in the Cowboys thread. It's just my 0.02 but others may feel differently.
Sorry, I don't mean to get into the back and forth.... I just am replying to their replies. FYI, there is no Felix Jones spotlight.
pity

Gotcha. I thought you were calling out the media for reporting a story that actual was a story. Personally, I think it could become an issue at some point but you're right in saying that for now it's not an issue.

It sounds like Hodge will be back this week. Is anyone else coming back from injury to help off set the few we had this weekend? TIA.

High ankle sprain for Jason Williams, out 4-6 weeks.

Ball, a concussion.

M. Hamlin, broken arm, out six weeks.

Cowboys trim roster

The Cowboys released tackle Andre Douglas this morning. He signed with the team during training on as a rookie free agent out of Temple. He did not see any action during the preseason.

If my calculations are correct, this move gets the Cowboys down to 76 players on the roster. They have to be at 75 by Tuesday. That likely won't require any more cuts since rookie linebacker Brandon Williams has yet to be moved to injured reserved. Williams tore his ACL in the Tennessee game and is out for the season.

My take: Camp fodder. They were likely brought in for the final pre-season game.

With a need for defensive backs, the Cowboys made a waiver-wire claim, picking up cornerback/safety DeAngelo Willingham from Tampa Bay.

The Cowboys had some interest in Willingham entering the draft. He played safety and cornerback at Tennessee. In 26 games in two years with the Vols he had 80 tackles, three interceptions and eight pass deflections.

The roster is back at 77, leaving the Cowboys with two more roster moves to make by Tuesday.

and

The Cowboys also signed cornerback Jeremy Haynes, who went to camp with the Tennessee Titans but was cut on Aug. 11. Haynes was a rookie free agent from McNeese State.

So we are up to 77 and must cut 2 by tomorrow? Is that right?

We are actually at 78, and will have to cut 3 today. Or they can put rookie tackle Robert Brewster on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and go ahead and place linebacker Brandon Williams on injured reserve and just cut one.

Just in case anybody may have feared Pacman returning, no worries.

He signed with the Winnepeg Blue Bombers of the CFL yesterday.

Cowboys make roster moves

To reach the 75-man limit, the Cowboys waived wide receiver Julian Hawkins, moved rookie tackle Robert Brewster to the reserve/physically unable to perform list and placed rookie linebacker Brandon Williams on injured reserve.

Every day before practice begins the quarterbacks and centers work on their exchanges. The quarterbacks go through different drops with different play calls, but it's a way for them to become more acquainted with the center.

Every day during training camp Cory Procter was among the centers in that drill. But he wasn't today. The four centers were Andre Gurode, Ryan Gibbons, Travis Bright and Duke Preston. A sign of things to come.

In other news, Roy Williams returned to practice today.

"Roy Williams is back," Wade Phillips said after practice. "Looked pretty good, moved around well. It looked like he was a little bit sore, you could tell, a little bit on his shoulder. But he didn't seem to have any problems."

Sam Hurd sat out. He ran today and expects to practice this week, although Phillips said that it's unlikely that Hurd will play in Friday's preseason finale.

Also, the Cowboys added a player today, picking up defensive end Curtis Johnson off waivers from Indianapolis. To make room for Johnson, the Cowboys cut guard Greg Isdaner.

Johnson was waived injured by the Colts with a hamstring injury on Monday. Johnson played in seven games last year as a defensive end for the Colts and had five tackles and a sack. At 6-3, 237 pounds, he is expected to play outside linebacker here.

Something to note here. The Patriots had also put in a claim here for Willingham but lost out to Dallas due to the pecking order.Of course, Dallas may have also asked him if he brought his playbook (from Tampa, haha). See Week One schedule. They can still pick his brain. It happens all the time.

So Willingham can play both S and CB, right?

The guy we got off waivers from Indy seemed to be a fan favorite. He was a hustle guy who is really good on special teams. His nickname is Cujo. That gives you an idea of how he plays.

A few notes from Wade's presser today:

*It doesn't look good right now for Stephen Hodge. He dressed out (again) today but didn't practice.

Wade is really concerned about his health. Didn't really give a firm answer when questioned if IR was a consideration.

Said he'd have to get with the trainers and doctors. Kind of dodged it altogether. Sounds like they may be ready to move on.

He was a project anyway (safety to linebacker).

*No word on if or how much the starters would play Friday.

*Noted that a factor in picking up Curtis Johnson was his special teams play. Joe DeCamillis liked what he saw on film in that regard according to Wade.

Johnson is still working out on the side rehabbing the injury (hamstring) for which Indy waived him.

*Duke Preston is picking things up well since being picked up. You get a sense that Wade feels good about him thus far.

*Couldn't answer the "5 or 6 receivers?" question.

Pretty short. That's it.

Hodge could be put on IR.

Ya, I mis-interpreted that part. My bad. It does appear Hodge is headed for IR.In addition, here was the exchange with Phillips in regards to whether or not he'd reached a decision on Jenkins and Scandrick as the starter opposite Newman:He was asked whether the second-year players might alternate series."There's different ways to do it certainly," Phillips said. "We'll work it out."Have you already made a decision?"We'll work it out," Phillips said.Could the starter be decided on a week-to-week basis based on matchups?"That's a possibility," Phillips said.Is there anything we could ask that wouldn't be a possibility?"No," Phillips said. "Anything is a possibility."So Courtney Brown could be in the mix to start?"Anything between Scandrick and Jenkins is a possibility," Phillips said, "until we finalize it."

Despite His Injury, Cowboys Counting On New LB

IRVING, Texas - While this final game could be vital to some of the young guys on the bubble, it appears one of the 53 roster spots has been locked in on a player who hasn't even worn the Cowboys uniform yet.

In fact, he hasn't even played his own position and he won't be playing Friday night in Minnesota.

But outside linebacker Curtis Johnson, a converted defensive end who was claimed off waivers from the Colts, likely won't be included when the final roster cuts on Saturday are trimmed down to 53 players.

The Cowboys wouldn't have claimed Johnson, who was waived/injured by Indianapolis because of a hamstring injury, although it appeared the Colts were trying to sneak him through the waiver wire and reclaim him to the active roster.

"There was a reason for picking him up," said head coach Wade Phillips, who admitted Johnson has been more impressive now than when they evaluated him coming out of Clark-Atlanta University last year. "We knew about him coming out of college. We had him as a projection linebacker. He's actually gained some weight. He weighed in at 254, so he's a pretty good-sized guy. He knows how to play full speed and he knows how to play all out, which was impressive. We thought it was an opportunity to get a guy that's a pretty good athlete that can maybe play."

Johnson played in seven games last year with the Colts, recording four tackles and one sack. He played in the Colts' first three preseason game this year, and had seven tackles and one sack all against the Eagles.

"I'm excited about it because growing up, the Cowboys were always my favorite team," Johnson said. "So to play here and wear the star, it's a dream come true for me. But I'm also just excited to get to a team and play. I've got just a hamstring injury. I won't play this week, but hopefully it won't last too long."

Johnson said he's not worried about switching from defensive end in the 4-3 scheme to an outside linebacker in the Cowboys' 3-4.

"It shouldn't be a tough transition. I did a lot of standing up when I was in college," Johnson said. "And I played the East-West Shrine Game as a linebacker. It's really more about learning the coverages as a linebacker and figuring out what's going on."

One area that shouldn't be a problem for Johnson is special teams. Not only did Phillips commend Johnson on that facet of his game, but the outside linebacker has plenty of experience.

"That's not a problem at all. I played special teams when I was in college and I did that last year, too," Johnson said. "I don't worry about that at all. With that, I just have to learn the scheme here and what we're trying to do. But it shouldn't take that long."

And that's a good thing for Johnson and the Cowboys, considering time isn't exactly on their side.

It's definitely going to be a game of backups tonight, no question about it.

But at the same time we'll get a good look at some of these players trying to make the back end of this roster.

I, for one, am interested. Can any of these guys make some plays? That's what I'll be looking for.

For another, we should get an extended look at Bobby Carpenter. From what I've gathered, he's been fingered to play the entire game. Start to finish.

I'll be interested to see how he carries himself throughout the 4 quarters.

Martellus Bennett will also be playing.

Wade (pregame interview) is watching for players at the receiver position (mentioning Stanback, Ogletree, and Johnson).

Ogletree is locked in at this point, I can assure you. It's a matter of "do they keep 5 or 6" and it comes down to Stanback and Johnson as I'd posted a few days ago.

The DB positions (mentioning Mickens and Brown).

Also the LBs. Steve Octavien is a bubble guy to watch for here.

Wade also offered more on his decision as naming Jenkins and Scandrick co-starters at RCB. Said he didn't envision as who could win this competition, but wanted the both of them to improve their play so as to better help this team. He feels they accomplished that and became good friends along the way.

He also offered that if one begins to perform better than the other as they work into the season, then he may make one a starter over the other.

Alan Ball has not been cleared to play since his concussion last week.

Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton have a personal competition between themselves as to who will have the least drops this season.

Miles Austin is putting his money on Crayton.

Sam Hurd didn't make the trip. Crayton is not expected to play, and probably not Austin either. So the young guys should see plenty of work.

I know there's no reason to really watch this game but I got nothin better to do and I would still like to watch it. It's not on TV here because the Texans are on. Anyone know if this game can be found on the internet somewhere?

First of all, Ogletree is o.k. if anybody is wondering. Essentially just an abrasion over his left eye from his helmet.

LB Steve Octavien has really made a case for himself in making this team. I think he's in.

Patrick Watkins no doubt has the team pondering whether they keep him or not as well. On the positive side.

No doubt. Nice to see the back-ups playing for their roster spot.
