You might want to circle May 1 on the calendar.
Twins catcher Joe Mauer today will play in a simulated game in Fort Myers, Fla. It will be the start of his final phase of recovery from a sore sacroiliac joint, a phase that could have him in the lineup a week from Friday, when the Twins play host to Kansas City.
After the simulated game, Mauer will play in extended spring training games, where he can bat leadoff in every inning if he wants.
He will alternate between catching four or five innings and DH-ing in those games until Friday, when he will officially begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment with Class A Fort Myers of the Florida State League.
The plan is for Mauer to play about six games for the Miracle, including back-to-back games behind the plate during the last two days.
He should have gotten about 50 at-bats in 10 games by April 30, a day off for the Twins. Barring a setback or rainout, Mauer could return May 1.
"If it looks like he's ready to head this way, then we will do it," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "If not, we can give him a few more days."
Gardenhire has said several times over the past week that Mauer's workouts in Florida have gone very well. Mauer also has given encouraging updates to teammate Justin Morneau.
Morales makes an impression
Catcher Jose Morales went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI against the Angels, but the Twins also were pleased that he ran the bases well and called a good game for winning pitcher Glen Perkins.
Morales ran the bases poorly last weekend in Chicago but smartly advanced from second to third on Sunday on a grounder to short in the fifth. That set him up to score on Carlos Gomez's infield single.
It's harder than it sounds, as the baserunner must know about where the shortstop is positioned before attempting to advance -- or he can be a dead duck at third.
And Perkins said he rarely shook off Morales during his eight-inning outing.
"We all know he can swing the bat," Gardenhire said of Morales, who is hitting .286. "It's about handling these pitchers. Baserunning, swinging the bat are bonuses."
Gomez uses his speed to get on base
Gomez entered Sunday batting .125 but legged out three infield hits for his first multihit game of the season. His infield hit to third in the fifth allowed Morales to score the lead run.
"Not killing the ball but putting it in play and using his speed,'' Gardenhire said. "That's a good thing.''
Hall claims Kubel's cycle memorabilia
Jason Kubel shook his head as he recapped his weekend.
"A few days ago," he said, "I was batting .220."
It was actually .226, but Kubel exploded with 4-for-5 nights on Friday and Saturday and, after going 0-for-4 Sunday, is batting .333 with two homers and 12 RBI. He become the ninth Twin to hit for the cycle in Friday's victory over the Angels.
Kubel said his helmet and batting gloves from Friday's game will be sent to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. He joked that he was glad they didn't ask for his bat.
Etc.
• Former Twin Torii Hunter, the Angels' center fielder, has a seven-game hitting streak.
• Juan Morillo's fastball was clocked at 94 to 96 miles per hour during his Twins debut Saturday.
Good news for Twins fan's if Mauer can return 5/1
This Morillo kid could be a real find for the Twins if he can keep control of his pitches
