Very tough loss yesterday. VERY tough. But that's all in the past now. Here we'll discuss the future of the team, which still looks very good IMO.

First off, the major FA's are: Dawkins, Tra, Runyan. That's the heart of your defense and both your Offensive tackles. Also on the hotseat is Lito,McNabb and Reid. They need to re-sign Runyan and Dawkins and get a stud OT in FA (Jordan Gross?).

Needs in Draft/FA: OT, S, CB, TE. How will these be addressed?

Biggest question mark: will McNabb return? If he does, he needs a new contract. How much are you willing to give him? How many years? Does he want to return?

Lastly, remember these two words: Jon Gruden. Do NOT be surprised if he is the coach next year. He was being groomed for the position before Oakland signed him away. I have it of good authority that there were many eyebrows raised in the Eagles FO when he was fired on Friday. In fact, Banner alluded to it when he was interviewed yesterday when he said something along the lines of 'things needed to change because they obviously aren't working".

DH - You really think they would eat 2 years of Big Reds contract to bring Gruden in here? I don't see it. Honestly what did Gruden do in Tampa that would have any of us still reeling from yesterday feel optimsitic. He won a title with Dungy's crew.I think OT is a big worry since Justice doesn't look the part. Also, I think we still need a dominant force at WR (Boldin??) although I do have to say, DJax exceeded expectations and Jason Avant really showed me alot this year. Other than those three (Curtis being the 3rd) these WR's can all go.Still would love another bookened DE from the Left side to match up with Cole.Other than that in all honesty after the Blatimore game if you were telling me we would be 3 point favorites in the NFC title game, I would have asked you for some of what you were smokingStill though typical Eagles to rip your heart out like that. To scracth and claw yourself to the lead and watch this D give it away was brutal.As far as McNabb goes - we're really comfortable in starting the Kevin Kolb era in 6 months??? re Reid: Yes, I do. Banner's comments yesterday after the game were very telling imo. I find that, more often than not, off the cuff answers like that are very telling. Yeah, when called on it this morning, Banner back-peddaled, but there was a reason he made that comment. re needs: I think WR is now back on the back burner. OT will be the position they will concentrate on. Also, I could see them making a big push at Peppers if CAR franchises Gross. I think this team at Defense is stacked very well for the future, but that stud DE to compliment Cole could allow them to not have to blitz so much.

Thanks for you insights DH - I'm just not getting all warm and fuzzy over Chucky. It was because of his team falling apart at the seems that we got in this position in the first placeYou would like that other dominant DE wouldn't you think? I still dont think this line does a good enough job getting to the QB, although again Patterson and Bunkley were great plugging up the middle. Your right though this D is really set up well You have to take alot of positives out of this year though. How about Demps in the return game and as an a future Saftey? Desean as a punt returner and deep threat?? Our return game is set up incredibly well for at least the next 5 years you would think. Last year we had Reno Mahe and Buckhalter.Lastly RED ZONE and SHORT YARDAGE must be addrressed with power back and a Boldin type. It still makes me sick that we have to throw on 3rd and 1. Is it me or is that friggin pathetic?

One thing I forgot to mention in the OP: they MUST get a RB to compliment Westbrook. IMO, outside of OT, this was the biggest glaring need this season. They need to get back to the lightning and thunder years of the past. The plug to that hole should be available via FA, Brandon Jacobs.

Transferring a post that I made in the 2008 thread:

I figured this was the last year of the Eagles' "window," but the last part of the season and the playoffs show that it's not true.

Today's first half excepted, the defense was fantastic all year, and every starter except Dawkins is young and/or in their prime. This is a defense that should continue to play at a very high level for another 3 years at least. Bunkley, Patterson, Bradley, Jordan and Mikell all made major strides this year. Brown, Samuel, and Cole are who we know they are. This may have been Dawkins' last great year, but he should still be able to contribute if he's not asked to do too much in coverage.

The offense needs an infusion of youth and talent at a few positions, but the situation there is hardly dire. As infuriating as McNabb can be sometimes, he is still one of the better QBs in the league, and should be next year as well. The WR corps performed above expectations, and Jackson/Curtis/Avant should continue to be major contributors for the foreseeable future.

Assuming no trades are made, we need to address these positions in the draft:

RB. Westy is getting up there in mileage and can no longer expected to get 75% of RB touches. We need a "smash" to his "dash," and Buckhalter, who's actually older than Westy, isn't it. I'd like to see one taken with one of our first three picks.

TE. LJ Smith can't get off this team fast enough. Same goes for Schobel. Celek looks like he could be Chad Lewis part 2. But we need more options at this position, which is so vital in the WCO.

OL. Before we can decide what to do here, we have to know what exactly is going on with Shawn Andrews. If he can be expected to contribute in 2009, that makes things a lot easier. The tackles are getting up there in age and the Winston Justice experiment is likely to come to an end. We drafted some guys last year, but it wouldn't hurt to take one or two more and see what we have in camp. Some competition for Jamaal Jackson, who had a bad year, might be a good idea.

DB. Presumably Ikegwonu will replace Lito at CB4, but we should draft a Plan B in case his knee is still not right.

What I'd like to see for 2009:

1. Replace Mcnabb with Brady, P. Manning, Brees, Rothlisberger, or Rivers.

2. If you can't get one of those five, address the real weak spots on the team, ie running back depth, offensive line, big receiver.

Good post, DH, but I disagree about CB being a need per se. Samuel, Brown, Hanson, and Jack Ike (if healthy) should be sufficient. If Jack is not ready to take Lito's spot, then yes, we bring in a young guy (4th CB, not a priority)

Really, I want to see them address OT and RB. Hunt was a mistake, and this year Eckel/Klecko in short yardage was a negative on O. Bring in a back to mix with Westy (30) and Buck (31) should be a day one job at the draft.

At S, is Demps going to be the guy, or is he strictly a 3rd S and returner? I honestly don't know enough about the staff's take on him to know, but if he's not the answer, I agree we have to add a player there. Mikell, Dawkins, Considine (specail teams MVP) and Demps (returner) - who gets bumped when we add a S?

OT/RB - Priorities. FA or draft. 2 first rounders gives them ammo

DE/S/TE/WR - Draft, unless there is a "must have" player they are willing to pay for in FA. Bring in a guy to add to Celek at TE, a WR to replace Lewis/Brown. We have some young DE's to match w/Cole in a rotation. Abiamiri, etc. More is better, but I'm ok with the D-Line if nothing falls into our laps.

Not sure how I feel about Gruden. I am not impressed with what he did in Tampa the last 5 years. Good coach, but I don't see him as the guy to get Philly over the hump.

Yeah I couldn't agree more. He's a coach with an ego, a guy that needs the spotlight, the whole Chucky thing is absolutely embarassing. He hasn't laid much of a foundation in Tampa if you ask me. It would be a literal roll of the dice to bring in someone without a track record to replace Reid at this point.

I don't hate Reid or his pass happy play calling but the enlarged bolded part is all that matters. 5 NFC championship game appearences in 8 years is great and all but winning it all is what its all about.I don't care whose crew the Eagles win with just that they win. If Gruden can win it all with Reids crew sign him up then.

they're both near the end, if not already there. It was just painful to watch Runyan try to move out there. And i figure its easier to replace a RT than a LT. If you swing and miss on a LT its big trouble and at least with Tra we know what we've got. Who knows, if they both want to come back and play on a 1 yr deal, then lets see how far they make it.I wouldnt be surprised to see them move up and take an OT. Seems like teams picking in the top 5-10 are more than willing to trade out these days given the financial implications. Monroe would be nice as he too can play both RT and LT, he's smart, and he's a beast. Maybe if they move up to get him and then sign Gross.Havent thought all of it through as i was hoping to have 2 more weeks of actual football to think aboutETA: Monroe is the OT from UVA

I think it's all about the need for a real running game. Acquire a quality running back, offensive tackles, and a fullback. This team needs to be able to convert thrid and short, and run the clock when needed.

while i would love to see a Defensive/Running oriented team in Philly, it will never happen with Reid here. Thats just completely opposite of his football philosophy. And the team is built right now to throw the ball, get a lead, and go after the QB.

First of all, I don't think that there a ton of glaring weaknesses on this team. The defense is very young, and appears poised to remain a top 5 unit for the foreseeable future. The offense has some needs, but not many....

DEFENSE:

Secondary: Dawkins has clearly lost a step. I love the guy, but it won't be long before he's a liability. We've already reached the point where he's no longer a strength on the field. Demps has NOT been impressive to this point, so I would list Safety as one of our bigger needs. We look pretty good at corner, even if Lito is gone.

LB's: I was very pleased with the progress of this unit this year. It looked like a weakness pre-season, but now looks solid. Some more/better depth would be nice, but isn't a priority.

D-line: Bunkley and Patterson have grown into the studs we wanted/expected. The DE's look good also. Even better is the fact that the unit has nice depth already.

RB: Westbrook should have another year or two of solid production in fromnt of him, but Buckhalter is old too, and there's NOTHING after these two. Westy's not bouncing back as well as he did earlier in his career, so I actually think RB must be a priority in the off-season. I could see a first round pick here...... At FB, we need one. Not necessarily a great one, but we need one.

WR: For years, we Eagles fans have begged for help at WR, only to be largely ignored. Well....this group won't scare many, but it's not exactly a weakness either. Avant looks poised to take the next step. Curtis is a terrific complimentary receiver, and peanut is a huge playmaker who should only improve. Baskett is a big body, and deserving of an NFL roster spot. I'd love to see another big body, but this isn't a real need right now. There are some decent weapons at #5's disposal now....

TE: Celek appears to be a solid receiving threat, but is he a liability in blocking?????? Schobel was never more then veteran depth. LJ is as good as gone, maning there is a hole here. I don't feel qualified to rate Celek's blocking skills. While there is a need at TE, I'm not sure if it's a major or minor need.

O-Line: Finally the heart of the issues. Tra Thomas is as good as done. His run-blocking skills are seriously eroded, and his pass blocking skills are starting to suffer. Who do we have to take his place? NOBODY!!!! Runyan is no longer a strength, but we can get by with him for another year or two. I'd love to see a mauler taking his place, but LT is a bigger need right now. We look OK at Gaurd, especially if Andrews can get back healthy. We could use a better option at Center. Overall, the O-line, once the strength of the Eagles , is now the weakest unit on the team. This is the unit most responsible for the short yardage difficulties we went through, as they were generally unable to move a D-line in run blocking, and did a sub-par job opening holes for Westy to run through.

QB: Umm...yeah. All of those wishing for the Kolb era are smoking crack. #5 is more then good enough to win with.

To summarize, our biggest needs are as follows:

LT/RB/Safety...only significant needs.

TE/FB/RT?....minor needs

C/LB/WR....wish list, OK as we stand.

It might be, but the bigger problem is at left tackle.

Very reasonable thought as Andrews played OT in college. That being said, it's tough to move a pro bowl player out of the position he excels at.

I view him as a Runyan-esque FA acquisition that is still relatively young, proven, and could be with this team for a long time. He has primarily played RT, correct? Personally, I'd like to see him on the side where he is most effective, not where we need him most. Then in the draft we need to go after at least one more T in the first round unless something else ridiculous falls to us.

This team has been VERY fortunate to have had a duo like Tra and Runyan for as long as they have, and I almost think we've taken it for granted. Winston Justice may still be able to show us something, but I don't want to count on it. We drafted a project last year too (King Dunlap or something like that?) and again, I'd rather wait a year or two to have to see what he can become.

DH, I was very happy when I saw your comment in the original post about Gruden. It was something I'd been thinking about all weekend. When I ran it past a buddy of mine he said that it was asked yesterday on the WYSP post game. Unfortunately he said that the commentators said that there was some serious bad blood when Gruden left with Lurie and Banner. I had never heard of this and was surprised to hear it. Any word on the basis of this?

i dont really know how you count on this guy going forward. I'm also pretty confused as to why he was never put on IR. For now though I am ok with MJG, Cole, and Herremans at G, though i agree it would be nice to have Andrews back

The only way I'm counting on Andrews next season is if his back surgery was to install a backbone. I don't think he likes to play football. Getting the crap beat out of you in a game you hate only works until you get a few million dollars in your pcoket. He has that now so I think he is no longer interested. I hope I'm wrong because he was an outstanding player.

Yeah I'm kinda leaning the same way as well. It's a shame becasue he's without question the most talented OL we've had in 25 years.

I agree. Andrews back would be a huge bonus, but Jean-Gilles is no slouch. I'm not worried at Gaurd too much. Tackle is a VERY differant story though.........

Very reasonable thought as Andrews played OT in college. That being said, it's tough to move a pro bowl player out of the position he excels at.

Especially when MJG is the very definition of mediocrity. He was outplayed by Cole & that isn't saying much. People can cry for the "big back" all they won't but the short yardage woes this season are a direct result of losing Andrews. Pound for pound, he is the best player on the team & if he isn't back next season, it's a HUGE loss. He's made Jamaal Jackson look a lot better than he really is.

I agree with all of the above so far, but I think we still need another WR, though not the top priority, it should still be one. DeSean had a great rookie year, Curtis was good when healthy, Avant started making plays towards the end of the year, but beyond that, what do we have? Baskett is inconsistent - he should be the big WR we need, yet he hasn't developed. Greg Lewis has to go - I'm beginning to think he has something over AR just like Reno Mahe did years ago, how else to explain why he's still on the roster. What happened to Reggie Brown? Even Lewis is playing ahead of him.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the one year #5 had a true #1 WR (that one in Dallas), they made the Super Bowl. If they are able to get a true #1 WR, make Curtis and DJax #'s 2 & 3, Avant the #4 and Baskett #5 (or something like that), I think that may help DMac w/ his completion % and some of their redzone problems.

But I totally agree with the beliefs that we need a big RB, O=line help, and S. It will be interesting to see what direction they go.

I am in agreement with most, that OT is the primary need this off season. I think that they should be targeting whichever of Carolina's FAs they don't sign. (Gross #1 or Peppers) Although I don't think we need Peppers, when you can add a talent like that, I don't think you can not think about it. As far as the draft, I would love to see them move up for Monroe or Oher. If they could land one of them and Gross, the oline would be back to its dominant self. If they cant get Gross, then what about moving Herremens outside, and letting MJG and Andrews play inside.

Also, one from left field. i know he is coming off of knee surgery, but what about signing Stacy Andrews. He has played RT, and maybe playing along side his brother again, will help to straighten Shawn out?

I think the OL is actually a pretty easy nut to crack if Andrews can come back & play with his head in the game. depresion is atough thing, and it's hard to understand if you haven't ben through it.

OL - In my opinion, this would be serviceable, and doesn't use anyone not currently on the roster:

LT: Herremans

LG: Cole

C: Jackson

RG: Andrews

RT: Runyan (Thomas if you prefer, but I don't)

Reserves: Jean-Gilles (G), Dunlap (T project drafted last year), Dorenbos (Center/Long Snapper)

Others: Justice might be able to be a solid RT, but we KNOW he's not a LT type.

Free Agent target: Gross. If you get him, you've got the luxury of playing him at LT, and having Herremans play either RG, LG, or RT.

FB: I think Eckel was okay as a FB, he got short yardage when needed, and came in during the season. I'm okay with him competeing for the starting FB job. Klecko isn't the answer there.

RB: Westy is fine, but we need someone to handle some of the load. Buckhalter is what he is, an okay reserve back.

Free agent target: Sproles. Yes, Darren Sproles. He's dynamic in the passing game, and runs with power. Fits the offense as it exists very well, and could form a very nice 1-2 with Wetbrook, using similar players, and allow splitting Westy out more.

WR: Greg Lewis needs to be upgraded. Badly. I don't care how it happens. The top 4 receivers are definiely worthy of returning. I think Brown is better as a WR than Lewis, but he probably isn't as good on special teams.

TE: Celek replaces Smith - an upgrade. A solid backup TE would be handy.

And i just don't see Gross coming here. These are both low first rounders....not much more expensive then early second rounders. We traded down last year because AR and co. couldn't resist the deal, and felt they'd still get their guy. It had almost nothing to do with the $$$$ involved.

How was not being placed on IR a classy move? No sarcasm, just honestly want to know. I'm watching the SB for one big reason now, to see if Boldin gets benched again or has his playing time limited. Would love to see the rift widened between him and the Cards coaches. Drive that wedge!

I like Big Jon but I don't want him back. Right tackles are much easier to replace than left tackles & he really can't drive block that well anymore. He's 35 & coming off back to back injury-plagued seasons. The only way I would commit to him would be on a 1 year deal & even then it would be for the leadership he provides, not his play. Cole was better than MJG but that isn't saying much. He was much better in space but he isn't a difference maker. I hope McGlynn has been showing them some stuff in practice & can push for a starting spot. I have ZERO expectations for Justice; he's an under-achieving turd & I can't wait until he's gone. He's a big reason why there is so much uncertainty with the transition. Alex Mack from Cal may be there with our second pick & is one of the better centers in the draft. I can live with Jackson IF Andrews is back, if not, we need an upgrade there also.

You read my mind. I had the exact same initial thought.From an ARI standpoint, I think Boldin will be a little easier to trade now after seeing Breaston's play this season.

The only way I'm excited about Curtis is IF they bring in a legit #1 (Boldin?) so that Curtis can go into the slot where he belongs. Otherwise Curtis will have some good games and some games where you can't remember if he even played or not.Frankly, unless some major changes occur for 2009, I'm gonna have a hard time getting excited anymore about the Eagles. As an Eagles fan, I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. The same crap over and over and over. For me, it's getting old.

Long way off til camp, but some quotes from Spadaro's article sound promising at least. He also touches on the idea of moving Andrews to one of the tackle spots.1/20 article
