 can't believe we passed on Bryant and Mays for Gresham. I suspect will be drafting a blocking TE around rounds 4 or 5. We are cornering the market on iinjury prone receiving TEs.

*sigh*

Conflicted about Gresham.

On one hand, any extra weapon that you provide Carson Palmer, especially over the middle and in the red zone, should be seen as a big help. I'm not too fussed about the injury or the blocking issues. On the other hand, it doesn't fit with the identity you've carved for yourself with the power offensive line and running game. And it's extremely questionable whether Gresham is a better fit on all three offensive downs to open up the outside of the field and around the red zone than Dez Bryant.

Most importantly, I've yet to see any reason to have confidence that Bob Bratkowski will find ways to get the most out of a player like Gresham. Sure, there were four receiver sets last year with the inept JP Foschi split far wide. However, that role could've been filled by a healthy Chase Coffman.

It'll be interesting to see how tonight goes. I think my wish list would include one of the many interchangeable safeties on the board at some point and for a WR like Benn to fall in the second. I'm not sure the corner talent is worth a second round pick right now, but that should be a priority. I also wouldn't be upset if a reasonable back falls as insurance.

I'm starting to feel a (tiny) bit more comfortable with this pick. Keeping an open mind (but if only for a second) on Bratkowski, we did basically lose all of our top 3 tight ends last year, so maybe the part of the playbook that got more adventuresome with the TE position was closed. So perhaps with a situation of Kelly, Gresham, and a healthy Coffman that really will change things and they'll put in wrinkles that were just impossible with Coats and Foschi. I'm not holding my breath based on Brat's track record but you gotta think that wouldn't take this guy in round 1 if they weren't going to utilize him. If they use him right, I think it'll actually be great, especially if our offense adds some new things that teams hadn't accounted for before. It really should help the running game if they use him right (I think the presence of that Gates guy was just a little bit helpful to that LT2 guy).

The fact that they twittered it before the Texans pick was even announced tells you all you should need to know about where he was on their board. It was a pick made with confidence not out of panic.

He seems a low-key (actually super low-key) guy who isn't full of himself and works hard. Those guys are always welcome.

Here's hoping my original consternation is long forgotten when he's busy catching his 8th TD around week 16!

Now on to the next round. Is it conceivable, dare I even say it, that Mays could slip all the way to #53? While it would be a huge indictment of his cover skills, I'd be very happy if we somehow landed him there.

If Gresham can be what Coffman was supposed to be, I will have no issues with the pick. Wilson would have been very nice to have alongside Hall and Joseph though. If Nugent can find his accuracy, he could be a great pickup. I would really like to see a db or ol here in rd 2. Is there any chance they grab a QB if Clausen or Mccoy are available? I wouldnt mind seeing lefevor or pike in rd 3 or 4 just to start developing a guy.

I doubt Clausen or McCoy make it to 54. I also think that might be a bit too much heat to put on Carson at this point.

cant tell if bengals go value based or need based. i would imagine even they dont know what their draft philosophy is.

I think they do their best to match value to need. It's not all one thing are all the other.Think it's been a decent draft - not as exciting as last year's was. Shipley apparently is great at catching the ball. After last year, I'm all for that!PFT says the Bengals were one of the teams trying to trade up to #33 (but that the offer was insufficient). Since they didn't move, I wonder if Cook was actually their intended target there. Will be fun to see how the rest of this fills out. What kind of G prospects are left?-QG

I'm happy with the players they've taken for the most part. I like Gresham, Dunlap and Shipley and think they can all contribute. But the fact that we haven't addressed the OG or S positions is concerning to me.

I agree, but we've very much become a draft-the-board and let-the-value-fall-to-us kind of a team now. Maybe they have an unheralded kid they like that they figure will be there?I do think that Ghee might be asked to take on some of those safety duties.-QG

I really like this draft as a whole. Hopefully, they can find a way to handle the weakness at safety, but depth across the board is becoming a major strength. Jerome Simpson is looking more and more like a total bust, but at least they recognize it.

Maybe they'll sign kurt coleman after the draft.

Was kinda bummed to see Dickinson go just before out pick. True we really don't need him if we re-sign Kelly, but the kid was just ridiculous value in the 7th!

Overall I'm pleased with the draft. They did a lot to try and improve the pass rush which ought to make the job easier for the secondary. Any idea what kind of veterans might be out there on the scrap heap that might be good to plug in at safety?

Elbow? Was it 100%

Broken Thumb on left hand? Did this hurt playaction?

No TE. None of em could get open, and when they did, they dropped the ball

Coles: Fell off a cliff, and could not get open. Had drops as well.

Caldwell: Disappeared midseason. No other wrs stepped up either, Henry was injured, and Simpson is a bust

OL: Was better at run blocking than passblocking last year. Lot's of 3 Tackle sets

Defenses took away Chad.....it was pretty easy to do.

Destroyed his playaction.

Did they sign Coker or what? Sounded like it was a done deal, but I can't get confirmation anywhere. I'd love to see what he can do, but who do you cut in Benson, Scott and Leonard??

I'd be ecstatic if we could get him and Briscoe on the PS.

FWIW, I'm getting pretty amped to see what Ocho, Jones & Bryant can do together.

Bengals are opening contract negotiations with Jonathan Joseph. :homer: Funny that they are being more (genuinely) proactive than the Jets. Perhaps the whole Revis situation has them wanting to get this done sooner than later.

My latest theory is that Mike Brown is convinced there will be a lock out next year, and decided to make a serious move to win now. This would also explain why he's not extending Marvin. Thoughts?

Backup theory still is that he already promised Zimmer the HC gig in order to keep him here.

Like the signing, will really love the signing if bryant can get healthy. Benson is going to be a monster this year. If Palmer doesnt get it done this year, it is time to start finding a replacement. It is going to be a fun year!

Agree that this was a great signing at a great price (and yes, you gotta give Mikey Boy credit for driving a hard bargain here). Hope it's not a bad sign for Bryant though it is a bit troubling for the young WRs. Glad they were proactive here instead of waiting for Bryant to turn into Coles 2.0. I agree that Carson's numbers have to improve this year - they gave him all the toys he could want.Who Dey! :lmao: -QG

Bengals apparently wasted a lot of scratch on Bryant. How did he get cleared medically to get signed?

Great bailout signing. Goodbye Matt Jones and Simpson?

Who Dey.

What do Ocho's prospects look like for the year? Does the TO signing hurt or help him? You have to think this signifies a shift in philosophy somewhat.

Is Palmer's arm up to the task because it doesn't matter how open somebody is if you can't hit the target.

These 5 are locks...

Ochocinco

Owens

Bryant

Shipley

Caldwell

Then one from these guys...

Simpson

Briscoe

Cosby

Maybe they keep 7... but that'll hurt another spot. I'm guessing Jones, Purify and Brown have no chance.

Okay, this is probably more of a PFT :hifive: kind of thing, but I've found it intriguing with regard to the WR depth-chart. Antonio Bryant is still numberless. He hasn't participated in a practice since the great number swap, true, but even on the video that the bengals sent out featuring the new Big-3 WRs, TO asks him what his new number is and Bryant says "Just call me the terminator" and no number. Perhaps he doesn't want to go through 3 numbers at camp (or the Reebok $ implications) and one of the WRs at the bottom of the totem pole has the number that he wants. I'd probably think he'd have his eye on Jerome Simpson's #89 as much as any. Anyhow, just the sort of slow news item PFT would thrive on I think.

Can we get Gresham signed already? :( Nope. Hell bent on being the last team to sign their 1st round pick yet again. Really want the kid to get in there so we can have the full package ready.

-QG

So now that both the 20th and 22nd picks are signed and slotted (without any crazy Al Davis slot-destroying deals) when do you finger Gresham gets in? August 1st as Mikey Boy tries to squeeze the last $25k out of his contract?

Crisco Prisco tweeted that Andre Smith is 370 Pounds!?!? Can Jamarcus play line? He's in better shape and seems more motivated!

This guy is ridiculous. We were at camp yesterday and they had him working out by himself pulling a sled and I have never seen anyone look like they could have cared less more than this kid. He just casually walked along like a sloth making sure not to exert any actual energy. I don't buy the foot excuse either. Maybe he is still hurt but it is because he is just a lazy POS who knows he is rich without having to do a thing and that is exactly what he is doing. Unless he magically develops a real work ethic he is nothing more than a waste of space and 21+million. Not good. I also thought it was interesting that although he had to show up and leave practice with the other players that not one time did we see anyone say one word to him aside from a trainer/coach.

Bengals just signed Gresham per OCNN and other outlets.

That was speedy by Bengals standards - we actually beat 3 teams to signing their first rounders :goodposting:

Look forward to seeing him in Stripes :)

Well that was fun with Coles Bryant (actually Freudian-slip typing there by me).

The good news is that we don't need him. Shipley and :eek:2 will be good in the #3 and #4 roles.

Kinda glad they got it out of the way. Clearly the med staff made a couple serious blunders here: 1) with the initial evaluation of the knee and 2) letting him practice one day.

I think there's a subplot to it all ultimately. They could've put him on IR and had him for next year, it's true (though I think that also would cost them a $3m bonus) and of course there's the 6-week PUP deal but I'm under the impression that the continued flirtation with TO and ultimate signing of him basically put Bryant back into the mail-it-in mode he had with Tampa at the end. Has a free agent ever given up his number to someone else before even playing a game for the team? I remember the video with the 3 of them (TO/Chad/Bryant) that was posted on bengals.com right after the TO signing and it just seemed like Bryant was a little withdrawn even then. He knew he was nothing but the side-side show at that point and I think rather than motivate him he just turned down the effort. Could be totally wrong about that, of course, but say he signs with the Rams and puts up good numbers as a #1 receiver it wouldn't be the biggest surprise ever.

But it's all good - because the offense looks like it's humming now.

So long, AB! We hardly knew ye!

eta: pretty funny that the Bengals website finally shows Bryant with a number (19) after having no number for him for like 2 weeks (even after it was announced). Bet those #19 jersey fetch big $ on ebay!

On another note, congrats to Jersey boy Clark Harris for holding on to the long-snapping job. Met his GF's mom actually when I went out to the game last year - seems like he has a nice family.

Oh and he actually is like, ya know, snapping the ball correctly :goodposting:

Which is not something we take for granted in Bengaldom.

Curious what the Who-Dey faithful think of the roster decisions.

Glad to see JTO gone - I mean he was pretty wretched. Baby Bro as the backup isn't really any more comforting though. Do they let him go if they somehow get Leinart? Getting rid of O'Sullivan instead of Jordan strikes me as being both political (presumably keep Carson happier) but also thrifty (as JTO's salary is more that CMU guy's).

Coffman to the practice squad was pretty interesting - hope the kid can get untracked but it's a pretty bad sign. The continued presence of Coats is rather vexing, though in this set-up he should barely ever see a target and no targets means no drops  I really hope this team gives Tony Richardson a call as I think that he'd be a much better 1-year solution to the fullback problem and is a classy veteran to boot.

Saying no to Housh is the right move ultimately. While it's nice to contemplate that extra firepower, I'm not really sure it would work all that well and probably just hold back the development of Shipley and Gresham.

Hope that special teams isn't too badly impacted with the dropping a Hebert who was a special teams ace.

Nugent was the right call at kicker, IMO. Probably the biggest leg we've had since Rackers and having a guy who's capable of nailing 50-yarders is a nice weapon to have. Rayner didn't really do that bad, but he doesn't have as much leg. All that said, if Nugent struggles I don't think he should have a long leash.

What say you, Bengals fans?
