Can there be any doubt that the Cowboys 2009 draft is among the worse draft performances ever by any team? Twelve freaking selections, and not one of them is any good. They traded away their first round pick to Detroit for Roy Williams (could have had Oher there; or even Hakeem Nicks or Clay Matthews). Then they continued to trade down every single step of the way and just trashed the entire thing.As usual, a lot of FBG Cowboy fans came in defending this crap. Was a bad draft certainly not the worst ever. Phillips looked nice, I like Butler and Williams as backup OLB hopefully they continue to mature. Brewster is a headscratcher for as bad the as the o-line has been this year you would think he would get at least a little playing time. I really liked the Jason Williams selection thought he was going to be the missing ILB to cover the underneath routes but he never panned out. Congrats man I remember you calling this out as a bad draft. The Hodge pick is eeriely similiar to the Justin Beriault pick years back.

It was an awful strategy and one that reeked of arrogance in feeling settled at all positions. Yes, they had very poor special teams in 08, which needed to be addressed. But, to point a shotgun barrel at the later rounds in hopes that something might hit was preposterous.

Well, Buehler is going to kick this weekend and then Kris Brown will compete next year with Buehler. I don't see how this is a bad thing, competition is a good thing. Buehler did get better as a field goal kicker but he still needs to take another step. I think he can beat out Kris Brown IMO, is leg is solid, he just has to be a little more consistent and makes some kicks under pressure. If Kris Brown ends up beating him out, that will be a very short term fix. They better keep working with Buehler as he could end up kicking for awhile.rather roll with Buehler hopefully they can get a better K option in FA.

What do you guys think the passing game will look like this weekend against Philly? More than likely it'll be McGee and it appeared to me that he didn't really look a ton to Witten but tried to find Austin in the brief time we saw him out there against Arizona. There may actually be a decent amount of passing in that game.

I think as long as Jerry is the mastermind of the draft, we will continue to see crappy picks and poor decisions.
Not sure if keeping Red Headed Jesus around will help that or not. I cant see him really standing up to Jerry.
I have heard some rumblings about defensive coordinators if Garret comes back. Would love to see Marvin Lewis in Dallas running the defense, although I doubt that is a possibility.
Also hear that Jerry may be less in love with Red Headed Jesus than he was.
Anyone else hearing any of this stuff?

Awesome post...last week I called Sirius Opening Drive and talked about this very idea with Ross Tucker.To me, the biggest diffence from this year to last year...is that teams have figured out that Rat is the guy to key on, not Ware. Ware is still a beast-don't get me wrong. All Cowboy fans are wondering what happened to Anthony Spencer. Very simply, teams are doubling Rat on passsing downs and he isn't flushing QB's wide for Spencer and Ware to clean up as much. This also is why everyone is freaking out over our CB play because QBs have so much time to carve us up.In our current D we already have holes in the front 7....NT (rat is ok but not prototypical), DE and at ILB...so why not switch back now to the 4-3. Our front 7 would look like this:Spencer......Fairley.......Rat......WareJames.......Lee........TBD (4-3 LB's are easier to find then 3-4 backers)This instantly improves the pass rush and gives our corners some relief to play more zones and ballhawk. While Patrick Peterson and Prince are great players and you can never go wrong with having too many corners...BUT...I don't think his addition helps us without addressing my other points about pressuring the QB from the middle as well.

So, now that it is very apparent that Garrett is back....can we get a short list of who we want for defensive coordinator? Offensive coordinator?I read that Jerry Jones has said that he wants to bring in a "who's who" of assistant coaches to work under Garret. Would love to see Marvin Lewis, Dom Capers, Mike Nolan or Rob Ryan as D-coordinator. I read Mike Singletary somewhere, no interest in having him in Dallas. I dont think his antics work. Not sure about offensive coordinator. Maybe Sporano if he is let go by Miami. Not sure who else I would like to see.
so whats the deal now that CLE and BUF lost? cowboys chance is only as high as #6? if they stay ahead of the lions they still got a chance at a good CB

Zero chance the Cowboys draft a CB in the first round. Nothing is wrong with the corners, the problem is no pass rush.

I think the priority is stud DT (DE or DT), stud OL, stud CB, then stud SF in that order with this first pick. Will the new D coord move back to a 4-3?Anyways Buf and Den winning would have just been gravy giving a chance to move up. We'll see what Den does later.Detroit is winning and the Vikes won so if we lose we're in front of both. Root for Houston. We played both Jax and Hou so our SOS won't be hurt but Hou winning gives them 6 wins. Bengals aren't out yet today root hard.Not sure who has a better SOS between Ari and SF ... one of them will have 6 and the other 5. Losing to Ari won't help us I don't think.As big as the draft slot ... if Was loses and Dal wins we could pass them for scheduling purposes (as well as in the draft). So ... a win vs Philly knocks us down from 5-7 to 10-14 ... and likely gives us a 3rd place schedule next year.
I didn't see enough pass rush or run defense ... it'll also depend if we move to a 4-3. Simply put a stud DL is worth more than a stud CB ... and may contribute sooner.

There are 2 D-coordinators that I'd love to see in Dallas next year. Dom Capers and Mike Nolan.
Capers is now running GB's D but his contract expires at the end of the season. He's run some great 3-4 schemes in his day. Further, when Garrett was interviewing a couple years ago, Capers was to be his DC.
Nolan has run Miami's D this year and Denver's last year. Both were much, much stronger under his watch than in previous or subsequent years. He also runs a 3-4 scheme. His availability is contingent upon Miami cleaning house.
I know some want a scheme change to a 4-3. But Ware and Spencer are not built to be ends in that scheme. They are too small and will get worn down going against 320 lb OTs for 70 snaps a game. Further, our LBs are totally wrong for the scheme, especially the backups. It would take significant re-trenching to install a 4-3. Given the large number of holes at other spots, notably the OL and safety, I don't see that we can afford to switch to a 4-3 this upcoming season.

I still think Peterson will be most effective his first year.. DE or DT usually take 2 years to build up for the long season and the bigger OT they face.

Right, but we have no DE's. Igor Olshansky and Stephen Bowen are bums. If I'm being honest with myself, I have to admit I'm a little disappointed at all the Sacks Ware misses. At least once per game he has the QB in his grasp and he doesn't get him down. Maybe he's just shocked he's in the backfield since he gets held on every single pass rush. Coaching seems to be a issue as well. For all the love Wade got as a defensive mind, he sure called a vanilla D with the exact same middle blitz that every team in the east knows is coming. We need a safety. BADLY. Make that two of them. We haven't had consistent play back there since Woodson and Roy Williams was there (in his first two years). The current guys have ZERO ball location skills. Sensabaugh, who has been in the league for 6 years shouldn't even be on an NFL roster.Jenkins is a fine player, he is just getting abused this year because he has no deep help. Believe me, there are very few corners in the history of the NFL who can't get beat if a team has it in it;s mind to pick on them. a lot of Cowboy fans have been down on Newman this year, but I think this is one of his finest seasons. I've just been happy he's been able to stay healthy for 90% of the season. W/O good safety play were are just so vulnerable to the deep pass. If you want to beat us, all you have to do is go deep on every single play. I'm shocked more teams haven't figured this out. It's been like this for years. In all, we have a bunch of glaring needs, none more obvious then the line. Then safety, and DE. If I was Jerry, I wouldn't draft one player outside of those positions. On offense, I'd like to see a better run game installed. We run the same plays over and over. If I see Witten come from the slot, line up in the backfield showing one of out 3 running plays I may shoot myself.

It's beyond ignorant to think that a rookie kicker would make 2-3 game-altering kicks that an average veteran wouldn't have made.Whoever kicks for Dallas next year will make more of his kicks than Henery will.

You want Fairley....but not a 4-3? Where exactly are you playing him? He is a prototypical 1 gap tackle and not a NT. Are you playing him at DE?

No chance at Fairley, Peterson, or PrinceA last second come back win in a meaningless game crushes our draft spot. We'll see how tie breakers shake out soon but we are between 7 and 14 now. Dallas could have been as high as 4th depending on tie breakers had they managed to not come back and win.
Car, Cin, Buff, Den, Cle, Ari are your top 6 with five or fewer wins ... SF, Hou, Min, Det, Was, Ten, and probably Sea all tie Dal with 6 wins. That's 14 teams including Dallas. If we're still 7 it's not bad but we won't know until tonight for sure.

I think Buffalo would have a tougher SOS, but they are the only 1. We're probably the last of the 6-10 teams.

Our low SOS only shows how pathetic this season was. That said, there were probably 4 shoulda win games and not having Romo had to cost a little. What could have been.
Picking 9th or 10th isn't horrible but 6th would have been so much better.
Question now becomes where we seed for next season's schedule. NFL.com says we're ahead of the Redskins I guess because of Division record before SOS. Not horrible but a 4th place schedule would have been better.

Should go atleast 4-1 at home vs. that group and no worse than 2-3 on the road putting them at atleast 6-4 pending the 3 road and 3 home division games. Let's say they go 2-1 at home and 1-2 on the road that's 9-7 and that's probably worst case. The Pats, Jets, Bucs and Lions are probably the scariest games on paper as of today. If they can manage a realistic 8-2 vs. that group we're talking 12-4 or so.

There isn't an O-lineman with a top-10 grade, so we're not going to do that with the 9/10 pick. That said, we have the same two primary needs as we did last year and didn't address: OL and defensive backfield. Jerry has mastered the art of trading down. So, I fully expect him to do that and drop to around the 20 spot and get Pouncey. Otherwise, if Amukamara is available, ####### get him. I'm done with Newman, and am willing to give Jenkins a year to figure it out.
