Well, today is as good as any to get this started. Actually intended to do this about three or four weeks ago but got sidetracked.

This will initially be short and I'll fill it in more later.

Mike "Stuck With Me" Brown has piloted yet another successful campaign and once again we look to the future. He's my glob of thoughts about the various positions.

GM - Never gonna get one at least until Mike Brown makes Death Pool players everywhere happy.

HC - While it's easy to criticism him, Marvin Lewis has been a beacon of light and wildly successful, especially when compared to what preceded him. 2 playoff appearances. This is an accomplishment that will never be equaled again in the Mike Brown era. There is a lot to criticize though - probably 8 of the top 10 dumbest replay challenges in the last 8 years have been perpetrated by him. (The pain of last year's botched challenges in the playoffs persists.) The in-game adjustments have been completely lacking as notable players have said. There has been insufficient accountability for mental mistakes on the part of players it seems (with one notable awful exception in Andre Smith's last game where he got pulled out of a game after a sack. He'd been playing strong and finally looked like the guy Marvin thought he was drafting. Dennis Roland promptly came in and did the matador thing and got Carson crushed). A mental here or there is gonna happen and is generally on the player. When it happens persistently and is part of a larger pattern you must look to the coaches. The one thing I will say, however, is that this team has played all year no matter how bad it has gotten. It's been death by a thousand cuts piling on mistakes with injuries. There hasn't been that one game where it all imploded at once like happened in Wade Phillips' last game in Dallas. Marvin will be a great coordinator somewhere next year unless by some miracle he's back. But this has all the earmarks of a mutual divorce.

OC - Brat is awful - he's like the Mike Brown of coordinators. I can sit on my bar stool and call out play after that he's gonna run and if someone with my basic football acumen can do this it just shows what easy pickings we are for the opposition week after week. We have all this talent and are still ranked 34th in offense somehow. Probably will be our next head coach and given a lifetime contract..

DC - Zimmer is an interesting case. He really brought things to a whole new level last year and it would be unfair to say that he's above responsibility for this year's debacle. That said, they've had injury after injury and the defense has probably performed at a higher level than you could expect with who they have in now. Still, there have been a lot of breakdowns this year and his stock has to have taken some hit around the league. All in all, he's very likely the next head coach and he's got a makeup that makes me think it'd actually be a good move (provided we get a capable DC to replace him - certainly no sure thing at all). He's the most likely internal candidate to bring actual discipline and accountability to this team. He's the one guy on the staff that I'd hate to see go.

ST - They seem to have improved over the course of the year, actually. We are getting much better in the return game of late.

QB - It just kills me and pretty much breaks my heart to see what has happened to Palmer. Having it happen to an Akili or a Klingler is one thing - those guys were just awful picks but with Carson it's different. With a real OC it'd be nice to see what would happen but there's a very strong chance he won't be back (though if the Bengals offer renegotiation to stay as starter he'd actually be very wise to listen as those $ are not out there on the open market for him). I am in the minority in that I think he can get back to the level that he was before the injuries took their toll if he got with a team with a better line (or at least one he had more confidence in) and with receivers that worked better with him and ran better routes. This is NOT to excuse the times he has unwisely forced balls and tried to do things that he may have been able to get away with before. His struggles are similar to those that more heralded QBs have had of late in that regard. I'd put the odds of him coming back at about 1/4 or so - a lot depends on where our draft pick is, whether he might be willing to mentor a young QB as Kitna did with him back in the day) and the randomness that is Mike Brown's loyalty to certain people. There are a number of destinations where I think he could start, given an OC that looks at his problems as fixable (and I think that will be the case). Arizona, Minnesota, maybe Tennessee come immediately to mind. The problem there is no replacement. Baby Bro probably isn't really a legit #2. Lefoveur (sp?) is a project guy and a #3 in the near term. This team doesn't do the bold move thing (like trading for a Kolb). If they are somehow #1 and staring at Luck I guess that's a way they could go. Somehow I think they get enamored with Cam Newton instead and decide to ruin him regardless of where they pick.

RB - Benson's contract is up and it's doubtful he'll be back. I'd like to see what Scott could do with more reps and Leonard really is great in his role and I hope he sticks around. A bruising short-yardage guy taking a smaller load would be a good change of pace for Scott (the opposite of how they do it now). I don't think Ced is quite done but I also don't think he'll be a true bell-cow elsewhere or anything like that. Would like to see what Pressley can really do at FB. Jeremi Johnson was fat but perhaps his blocking was underrated in terms of last year's success.

WR - This could be, probably will be an area of revolutionary change. The criticism by Owens today probably doesn't help him stay (and he's actually indicated a willingness to do so fairly recently). His route-running has left something to be desired to say the least. He'll be offered enough somewhere else to go it seems so probably not a concern going forward. Ocho is a team option. Assuming Brown is in "blow it up" mode he'd likely go but for all we know Mike sees some twisted loyalty there as well as a guy who's generally been a fan favorite. Probably 40% or so he ends up staying. The thing is, the cupboard isn't bare behind them so turning over the team in this area may not be quite so painful. Shipley has been fun to watch this year and is a great young player who will excel in the #2 role I think. Caldwell's receiving has regressed, it is true, but I've noticed that he's been on the field a lot as a run blocker (in fact his presence seems to tip off running plays - thanks Brat) so he's working hard and I haven't given up all hope on him yet. Clearly they need to address it more in the draft if the top 2 go but there's at least something there. Oh and Jerome Simpson has to be on track for some sort of record for most games deactivated right?

TE - Jermaine Gresham has been great and a difference maker at the position. It'd be really nice to see what a real OC could do with a piece like him. Kelly's getting up there in years but is a solid veteran. It'd be nice if Coffman actually got to do something before the season to ends to see if he's worth anything at all. Having two receiving TE threats would be a nice dimension to have (see New England). There are other areas of more crushing need.

OL - Whitworth has really ended up being an amazing steadying presence at LT. The fact that we actually have him locked up a while is great. Sometimes these guys can be made into a position and you don't have to automatically get a top draft pick to fill that spot. Speaking of which - the Andre injury was just devastating as the kid really finally was showing glimpses of what he could be and that he actually was getting it. Still a ridiculous pick at the time, for sure. It will be telling if he approaches this 2nd foot rehab any difference than his first. Of course the Bengals medical staff all seem to have the last name Kevorkian so that's a concern. Still fear that he's basically going to be Bill Walton without the short-term success. Interior line is a huge concern. Cook is still of course infinitely better than the human turnstile that was Eric Ghiaciuc but that's not good enough - we really should address this position in the first three rounds. LG is a disaster for us and also is a crying need. No matter who the QB we'll get nowhere until that's addressed. The rest of the guys we have are pieces and projects.

I'll do the defense in a bit, but it start with two words: pass rush.

Who Dey! <img src="http://static.footballguys.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/kicksrock4.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" :goodposting: " border="0" alt="kicksrock4.gif" />

Hey GB-

A couple quick thoughts....

I don't think you're alone on your first sentence on Palmer. It is a terrible thing to watch honestly. He deserves better, but I won't blame them if they choose to go in another direction this offseason.

Mike Zimmer/ Pass Rush. Its easy for me to say the defensive line needs to get better, but does any team in the league run less effective blitzes than the Bengals? In the NFL, you can get pass rush in two totally different ways. Beat them up front or bring more people than they can block. Lately, Dunlap and sometimes Johnson have shown an ability to win battles and get to the QB. We still get almost no rush from anyone else on the defense. With good corners and decent nickelbackers, it seems like we should be able to bring more people more often and get to the QB that way. I'm not expert, but I'm looking at Zimmer on that one. Are we just too conservative? Are our blitzes so ineffective that we just quit calling them?

Hey cheese :blackdot:It's possible that we've quit blitzing for a couple of reasons:1) Early in the season we would just get absolutely killed on screen passes. Of course Dunlap and Atkins also weren't as involved either. Hard to be aggressive when it leads to big gains so often.2) I think the injuries, especially in the secondary, has led to us playing more straight-up as well. On balance the secondary play has been pretty good given the sheer number of injuries but less has been demanded of them as well.Still, I definitely think Zimmer's stock is down a little bit after this year, at least to the extent that we shouldn't worry about losing him like we were after last season.-QG

Hello Jerome Simpson :hot:

And Hello Andre Caldwell

May be the quickest I've ever changed about a position need. Might be more of a 3rd/4th round type deal at this point if the Ocho departs. Yet another year where we're out of it and a bunch of hungry guys come out of the wood-work making me wonder what if *sigh*

Palmer looks pretty good when he has receivers where they are supposed to be. The fade away jump shot to Caldwell 5 steps before he broke would have been incomplete with TO in there. To bad they'll be cutting him a few weeks. :goodposting:

If Carson puts up big numbers next week with the Bengal Cubs, then they have to keep him. They had an interesting stat yesterday. For the first time all year they did not have multiple drops from receivers. TO and Ocho dropped too many balls.

HC has to be a high discipline guy. I agree Marvin is gone. If Zimmer has that type of personality in the interview he gets the job.

Benson and Ocho may be an either or situation. It sounds like they don't like each other and they are not throwing money at both.

I think the writing is on the wall for the Ocho. With his frugal image, we do have to remember that Brown did cut bait on Antonio Bryant after the big $ they signed him to so the concept of him eating $3.5m and having Ocho disappear wouldn't be a total surprise.Man, I wish I could be the room when Mikey Boy and Marvin talk it all over. The fact that they say a decision could be announced by Tuesday has me thinking Marvin is likely gone since you'd think it would take more time than that to work out contract terms since there have been no discussions. Obviously Zimmer is the preferred promotion from within. I can't see Marvin and Brat both getting fired, though :goodposting: mainly due to the possibility of the lock-out happening. I'm sure Mikey Boy is the most pro-lockout owner this side of Richardson and therefore actually does realize that the coaches can't work with the players if (or in his mind when) it happens. My gut tells me that Bengals fans should watch the Giants game with interest. If Coughlin gets fired and Mikey gets rid of Marvin I think Coughlin would be candidate 1 for Mikey Boy. Oddly, I think he'd be a better hire than he would've been in '03. While he's got the hard-### image, he has 1 think he didn't have when he last interviewed with us - a Super Bowl ring. I don't think he'd be as much of a detriment to attracting free agents as he would've been in '03.I think the Bengals like Benson and if the team is being built around young receivers that makes him more attractive to keep around. He can tote the rock a lot and based on the sample size of the last 2 years things seem to go better when he does. There's also enough guys that'll be out there that his price should be reasonable. I also think Palmer stays and I hope that he does. I hope that baby bro does not (mainly because I would like to get a more qualified back-up). I don't think they renegotiate his deal. Assuming this is the case, I actually hope he gets more vocal (even if it's just in the coach's ear) in terms of how this offense is run. That he played so much better without Chad and Ocho #####ing at him was alternately encouraging and troubling. It's encouraging because if he has guys that let him lead and that listen to him and trust him (and vice-versa) he's a lot closer to '05 Carson than it looked through most of this year. It's troubling because he's not shown the ability in the past to smack down guys like Ocho who tend to undermine his leadership position. I don't know if subtracting TO and Ocho will change this, but I think there's enough there to hope that it can.Anyhow, if I'm not mistaken, we'll have a pick anywhere from #2 to #8 when the day is done on Sunday. Kinda hoping Newton is already gone, wherever our pick is.-QG

I believe an extension has been on the table since last summer. Not inconceivable that would get used.

It comes down to the indoor practice facility and enhancing the scouting dept. for Lewis to stay. I think a change is needed on both sides. Mike Brown does owe some things to the people of Hamilton County that paid for his stadium. Coughlin would do well in Cincy.

Won't be long now until we have a couple of our answers.

Cannot imagine Ocho is going to be kept after Simpson and Caldwell stepped up again against a highly-regarded defense. (Fumbles by Simpson aside of course).

words just cant describe palmer today. the fumble and the missed pass at the end. but he made a bunch of great throws at other times. hes just so up and down.

need moar bernard.

jerome is all kinds of legit and better than ocho so its time to turn the page.

im fine with keeping marvin. he is likely the worst in the league at game and clock management but his team always plays hard (compare to browns today) and he has proven to manage the biggest egos in the league.

Agreed except for the keeping Marvin part. Simpson is the real deal. I would still entertain the idea of Green if he's there in the draft, but this team is fine without Chad and To . We missed Gresham today, who I believe should be a major part of the offensive gameplan going into the future.

part of the my fear with jettisoning marvin is that another coslet lebeau shula will be hired and we all are aware of mike browns futile loyalty that will take 4 years to overcome. marvin is desirable from a conservative perspective.

:goodposting:The Mike Brown batting average is not stellar in this regard. The fact that Coughlin definitely would not be the replacement adds to this.On the one hand, promoting Zimmer is appealing, in that he seems to be much more about accountability than Marvin has been. On the other hand, Zimmer is very close to Bratkowski so it increases the probabilty of Brat staying to about 100%.Like to DL in round 1. Interior line in round 2. (Unless they decide to do a gallery with one of the existing RTs and they can handle the switch - but 2 RTs in 3 years would be a bit much and it really would be just about the same as drafting a guard at that spot).-QG

As a Cincinnatian and a Bengals fan (97% of the time) my take:

Mike Brown: Just like everyone else...needs to go, dont' care where don't care how. But I don't expect that anytime soon.

Marvin Lewis: I'd love to see a Fisher, Cowher, Coughlin, Gruden come in and Marvin go. But I'm a realist and I know they have too high of a price tag for Mike Brown. That being said, over pretty much everyone else who is being talked about I'd like to keep Marvin. I'd love to see a Bengals team with Marvin coaching without Chad around.

Bratkowski: Needs to go. I personally would love to see John Ramsdell (QB Coach, SD) come in...not sure how likely it is he takes that step up but he has been in the league as a WR, TE, or QB coach since 1995 and I like his track record with the QBs he has coached. Since he has never been an OC he might be in our price range (aka the Brown Range).

Zimmerman: Love him, I'm not sold on him being HC yet (I need to see more of what he can do in Cincy), but in a year or two if he is still around, still successful, and the job opens up im all for it.

Palmer: I'm honestly sick of him I just want him gone so I don't have to see him or hear about him anymore. But I'm against bringing in some mediocre space-filler free-agent QB. I'd like us to trade up and draft Luck if he declares and let Palmer mentor him for a year, or if Luck doesn't declare...wait till next year to do the same.

WR/TE: I'd like to see T.O. and Chad gone. They bring far too much attention to the team. I think Simpson/Caldwell/Shipley/Greshem/Coffman would be a great group of pass catchers.

RB: Not really sure yet what to think about our running game other than the fact that we need to run more.

D: I don't have much to say about our D, hard to judge where it really is with all the injuries. but I was pretty happy to see guys coming in and playing well...most notably Micheal Johnson.

The coaching situation is the same is it always has been. Brown will only give x amount of control, and big name, great coaches are just got going to be willing to come to a situation like that. As long as Mike Brown owns the Cincinnati Bengals, they will continue to be a bottom 5 team in the NFL.

I'm starting a 1 man Death Pool with 1 pick selection.

1.1 - Mike Brown

Wow. I mean couldn't we just root for financial hardship causing a forced sale...that'd be more humane :confused:Or a brain transplant.-QG

With the 4th overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals will ruin the career of who?

Lets take a look at needs:

QB - Need to find a replacement for Palmer. Probably not a 1st rounder need. Aside from Luck, I dont see anybody worth a top 5 pick in this class. What this class does have is depth. Look for the Bengals to pull the trigger on a project/someone to mold between 2nd-4th. At the same time, I could see Mikey getting his grubby little hands involved and drafting Cam Newton.

OL - Yea, this is such a mess Im just gonna throw the entire line out there as needing replacement. The problem being that you need to get a (future pro bowl caliber) tackle with a top 5 pick. Unless you want to go all andre smith and draft another guard. Brilliant! This is simply not the draft for top OL. Most mocks I have seen (granted it is early) dont have a tackle in the top 20 picks. I imagine they will grab an OL or two later in the draft, but I dont see a real difference maker out there.

WR - The youngsters have looked alright the last few games. I think it is clear that TO and Chad are done as Bengals. Simpson has played well enough to be a deep threat that has been sorely missed since they lost Chris Henry. Obviously Shipley has the slot position locked down. Another WR1 option is a posibility. (They could have that guy already in Dez Bryant, but whatever) AJ Green out of Georgia is a real posibility at #4.

DE - This is more of a situation where the best player available is a DE. Da'Quan Bowers out of Georgia will likely be there. It took the team far too long to get Michael Johnson into his natural position of DE, but he and Dunlap have both shown flashes of brilliance. This would be about depth, and keeping fresh motors on the field. The NYG have shown that having too many pass rush studs is not an issue.

DT - Peko's job is safe, though we seem to have been waiting for him to be a stud for some time. Sims is certainly replaceable with the right guy. That guy could be Auburn's Nick Fairley. This guy has been dominant, can play 3-4 or 4-3. This guy could have an immediate impact.

LB - They need depth here. Our high hopes for Rivers have dwindled. Rey doesnt seem that far behind. Dhani is getting up there in years. Hopefully thney get Rey in the middle. Hopefully he can handle the position. I think there are far better options at other positions, but if dead set on addressing OLB, UNC's Robert Quinn is the best at the position. I think this is another that gets looked at later in the draft.

CB - Joseph's contract is up this year I think, Hall has just one year left. There is no way they can keep both under contract. That coupled with injuries has shown what a hole we have in the secondary right now. None of the backups are a threat to be a shutdown guy. If available, Patrick Pearson out of LSU is the guy to fill this void.

S - This position is barren. They have to draft someone at this position, probably more than one. There isnt a top 5 guy at Safety, but they will need to address this position.

K - Obviously not a top 5 position. Can the Nuge make it back? If not, they need something, draft of FA. Stitser is awful. Actually worse than awful.

What doesn't need addressed:

RB - I think they lock up Cedric. He wont be super expensive, and the guy is reliable. Between him and B Scott, they should be in good shape at RB1, with Leonard being a 3rd down specialist. If they don't get it done with Cedric, I still like B Scott to be able to handle the load, I am skeptical the FO feels the same. If Cedric is gone they will do something during the draft at this position as well.

I figure we realistically are looking at one of three guys: AJ Green (WR), Da'Quan Bowers(DE), Nick Fairley(DT).

So there you have it. The Bengals have needs virtually everywhere. Good luck to the incoming rookie class, may you not be cursed by Bengaldom.

nice writeup. makes sense that you would be leery of the bengals ability to mold a "project" like newton. whats up with mallet? he seems to be a more polished and finished product, along with prototypical attributes.

I would love Fairley. Ever since The Bengals Brass announced to the world predraft we were taking Sedrick Ellis, and N.O. Not once, but twice, moved ahead of us to snag a DT in that draft.

Give me Fairley, to pair with Atkins, and Peko. A disruptive DT, would make their budding DE's better, as well as their Corners better.

:lmao: Good write-up. I really hope we go with the DE or DT and not with Green. I think the combo of Simpson-Caldwell-Shipley should be given the opportunity to be the front line guys. Simpson and Caldwell particularly have worked hard to get this chance - drafting a new WR at #4 is kind of a kick in the teeth, really. We're better at developing/finding later round guys anyway (maybe that's the one thing Mikey Boy does right). Getting a guy at the top of the 3rd would be a better deal. Or a veteran backup (sort of that Stokely-type) who'd be okay with being #4 and could help bring the young guys along some more while they get the seat time.I'm not certain they automatically go with a draft RB if they don't resign Ced - it likely depends on what is actually out there on the market. Again, our track record has been a lot better with mid-late round guys or reclamation projects.I think Adam Jones has played well enough that they may see CB as a less immediate need. Really wish they'd lock down these two guys though :ptts:I still think D-line is the most likely scenario. The top of the draft more often has special guys in that category. Our OL needs help at at least 3 of the positions (and if Andre is never healthy it really is 4) but they all interior line. Nobody drafts a OG or C early in round 1. Just never happens. The top of round 2 (or even top of round 3) is a prime spot for this spot I think. Safety again is a spot that almost never is seen at the very top of the draft (Berry was definitely an exception last year).I'd rather they not draft a kicker, then again Huber was a draft pick and I think he's been pretty good by-and-large. QB will definitely be a matter of intrigue. This again is likely a function of the new HC and perhaps  a new OC.-QG

I think Mallet is a bit overrated to what he will project to at teh NFL level. He has great size, but I worry about his accuracy. I think he is a huge reach at 4. His lack of mobility is a concern, especially behind the current Oline.

Please let him have a bad combine :goodposting: - this sounds like a Mikey candidate!-QG

Our OL needs help at at least 3 of the positions (and if Andre is never healthy it really is 4) but they all interior line. Nobody drafts a OG or C early in round 1. Just never happens. The top of round 2 (or even top of round 3) is a prime spot for this spot I think. -QG
They need to move Whit back to LG. He's a good tackle... but he can be a great guard. Start Collins at LT... everytime they put him on the field he plays well. Smith was looking better at RT this year. They just need to find Bobby's replacement and a center. Maybe Hudson and Stephens are the answer at those spots. Don't know what they have in Hudson, but Stephens looked real good in the pre-season and he's a monster.

ESPN suggesting that Marvin will be back....

Link
Hopefully that means a bubble, scouts, and more power to make personnel decisions for him/less for mikey.
I would hope so. I hope it wasn't more on the side of Marvin compromising on his wishlist. Could Mikey be changing?
Apparently the reports jumped the gun and they are still talking. Hopefully Mikey hasn't taken Brat as a hostage!-QG

Adam Schefter: Schefter: On a day when a person in the meetings said Bengals HC Marvin Lewis would return to Cincinnati, talks later broke off. Lewis left the Bengals complex when the two sides could not agree on franchise's direction and his future there is in serious jeopardy.

Apparently, Marvin asked for larger towels for the linemen

Conflicting tweets going on:

@joereedy - "Lewis has resigned with #bengals. News conference at 4:30 p.m."

@AdamSchefter - "Negotiation play by play: Marvin Lewis headed back in to meet Mike Brown. Cooler heads may prevail here. Both sides want to work it out."

Reedy's tweet came before Schefter's.

This is like the negotiation version of those bum fight videos...-QG

I think one of the more underlooked pressing needs for this team is at center. I'm in agreement on the need to fill some of the glaring holes needed to be filled, but a center imo could make the entire offense look better. I've been missing Rich Brahm since he left.

LOL at these tweets from Reedy:

# @kate_the_great As I have tweeted five times since then Kate RE-SIGNED 2 minutes ago via web in reply to kate_the_great

@dougiemac He re-signed 2 minutes ago via web in reply to dougiemac

Marvin Lewis has RE-SIGNED with the #bengals. Press conference at 4:30. Will be on ESPN 1530-AM http://t.co/VgLGLQ4 6 minutes ago via web

I'm sorry I didn't use a hyphen. I fixed it with the link a couple minutes later

He comes off as a bit of a tool. Primarily, this tweet: "Yes, and fixed it with different wording later. Forgive me for not being able to type and do radio at the same time."

On live now.

Here's a live glurge. Despite quote marks, it's all really approximate. I am no reporter.

Brown:

"there will be changes with personnel"

"there will be changes CONSIDERED with coaches"

Brown thinks continuity will give them the best shot - believes team is not far off.

"It's not an easy relationship, but it's a good one" between him and Marvin.

Marvin:

"is excited about taking the team where he wants to take it"

"Marvin came to the realization that this is what he wanted to do"

Marvin thinks he has a core group of guys. Faults self for not giving their good players to put them into position to make plays to win games.

Marvin feels like it's a new beginning, way different to 2003.

There are some things that are important to him and Mike that they are sure about now.

-------

Q: about Marvin wanting more control

A: marvin says he never said that - that he has a lot of input into personnel - it's Mike's ultimate say-so.

(aka sounds like the same thing to me)

Q to Mike about changes he replies: we talked about a range of things, he says some of the things out in public are not issues between them. Mike says they want to get the right guys out there. There are things in terms of coaching that need to be addressed. There will be change in what they do. It could be internal or external. "What we do when we play an opponent." People don't know cuz they don't see how they interact. "(The Coaching Staff) will be addressed going forward. It is something they will work together on the next few weeks"

Brown - "If you look at our record on scouting, we rank 10th on number of plays by players that we drafted. Would be higher without injuries." "I don't apologize for our scouting. It's an easy target. If you look at the real target, you'll see it differently."

Q about if Bengals will coach Senior Bowl. Brown says the league, not the teams make an announcement on that.

Q about practice facility. Marvin desires it. Brown says he has a desire, but not as keen. Timing is an issue to Mike (cites issues with the league - i.e. the CBA). "Some of this is perception. We worked in the cold weather. We played in the cold weather." He knows it's trending this way, and that they've been left behind. But it's coming.

Q about CBA. He'd hate to be in position of a team with a new coaching staff and the players showed up two weeks before the first game "I've been there when they happened" (referring to scab season maybe?). We have to be prepared to do what we have to do.

He thinks changes will be fairly soon (re coaching).

Marvin: thinks when you consider all things, looking forward he thinks it's the right spot for him to be. He's not happy with where Bengals are "We're not done."

"We have a nucleus of the right guys." "We kinda had a new outpouring/hatching of these young kids this year - in some cases too late. That was kind of a refreshing experience. He knows it was for Carson. I think it showed us a lot." Notes that almost half of team is 1st and 2nd year guys. "It's an exciting point." Wish we didn't have to go through CBA stuff - would like to get back to it.

Direct Q to Marvin: What did he get? Marvin: "I'm very satisfied where we are. And Moving Forward." Marvin jokes that they are going to implement the wishbone. Says the conversations were personal/private. "I will tell you. We will be better." "Better is different, Geoff."

Last year at bye was first they spoke of extension. This fall, a couple of times. Marvin says not comfortable discussing it during season, preferred end of season.

Says he didn't want a dark cloud over the players. He says he didn't feel that. Talked to Mike daily. Assistant coaches are not under contract for 2011 according to Marvin. They won't say how long the deal is for. Brown says "It's long enough to protect him in his position".

Press keeps beating on coaching changes. Mike "It isn't something we have in mind talking about in detail here today." Marvin: "It wasn't my place to say over the last couple of days."

Marvin says "however we decide on (things) we do it". Mike emphasizes that there's very little difference between them, ever. They work through disagreements and Mike says more often than not when they compromise it's for Marvin. Says Marvin has "control over his area".

"we run with a lighter crew than what other teams do" but says Duke Tobin is on top of things. Stresses communications (i.e. internet/video) - basically defends it. "I don't think it works badly, I think it works alright."

Mike: "We have a team that's very close. Continuity will help us. We add some people, we'll make some changes and get this back where we want it to be."

Mike says regarding getting fans back after blackouts "there's only one real answer - to win on the field - and that's what we plan to do"

Mike: "Either people will do things differently or we'll have different people to do 'em" - really sounds like they mean Brat here. At least that's how I read it.

Mike emphasizes good young guys, the young DEs and WRs. Says it's a different team from the start of the season though it's overshadowed by record.

Marvin wants to do Senior Bowl - always thinks it's a plus (he's right on this btw, hope they get the chance)

-QG

The tea-leaves I read: Palmer stays. Ocho and TO go.

Really hope they don't trot out a "new Brat" like some sort of "new Nixon"

-QG

So sick of this. Nothing has changed here. That might be the most painful press conference in the eight plus years Marvin has been in Cincinnati.
