Did Carson not learn anything from when Chad demanded a trade?it wont happen
Btw, Carson hasn't confirmed or commented on this either way so far.Naturally Ocho has already whined, asking why Lewis hasn't publicly thrown Carson under the bus - like one leaked story is the same as Chad going everywhere in the media with his trade request 3 years and dropping every hint he possibly could otherwise. Wish Chad would threaten to retire...-QG

Hopefully, Palmer's point is he wants some changes (Brat fired). Mike Brown may listen and finally comply with that demand. Palmer is bluffing. No matter where he goes he takes a pay cut and if he retires he better have enough money to help out his brother. He is not going to be a #2 in the NFL or UFL.Since the staff is coaching Jake Locker at the Senior Bowl, I have a bad feeling Mike Brown uses the #4 pick on him
I hope paragraph one is correct.I fear paragraph two is correct.-QG

Chad is right tho. Granted Palmer hasn't made it the circus that Chad did but he is correct. BYE CARSON!

I hope for his sake he's serious about being ready to retire. If he's thinking the Bengals are going to trade him just because he asked, he's crazy.

I fully expect the Bengals to call his bluff on this one. Whether or not he follows through and retires is anyone's guess.

As a fan, best case scenerio is he renegotiates his salary to a small fraction of what it is now so that he can fetch something good in a trade. Regardless of how stubborn the Bengals will be here, there is always a tipping point where standing your ground isn't worth the potential gain of a trade.

I apparently missed Carson's entire "I'm leaving" tour, 87 tweets about leaving or dreaming what it would be like playing with other teams, reality show, name change and other "look at me" behavior. The Carson's trade demand story doesn't even indicate who leaked it as far as I know. That's a damn sight different than what Chad has done. Carson has sucked up a lot of BS that really should go Chad's way. Surprised he hasn't decked him on the field.-QG

According to CincyJungle, Mikey Boy has come out already saying that Chilly ain't coming and that they are not trading Palmer.

He also is reported to have stated that the beatings will continue until morale improves.

I know some people are mad at Carson for wanting out. I'm not. This organization sucks. And it will always suck so long as Mikey has the reigns.

I say get whatever you can out of him. It isn't going to end well otherwise. Even if he doesn't retire, you are still prolonging the inevitable. They need a franchise QB (and a metric ####-ton of other things). Carson is not that guy. Sorry. He simply isn't, no matter how much promise he showed years ago. The problem lies in that Mikey thinks that Carson is still that guy. And he thinks that other teams should think that as well. So even if Mikey did consider trading him, he would want far more than anybody would ever be willing to give for Carson. The window of opportunity has closed. They missed their shot. Might as well blow it up, hunker down in the bunker and prepare for the dark ages of the 90s all over again.

I am sure that Mikey thinks this will all blow over and Carson is just mad being that they are fresh off of an awful season. Yes, Mikey thinks it's just an aberration that this season was awful. He has a very short memory. Mikey knows more than anyone else, and won't be bossed around. So he will let Carson go through with retiring if that's what he wants to do, because Mikey knows best. Either Carson is prepared to go through with retiring, or he is willing to become the PITA that Chad is, but he won't be traded.

One option that Carson has is to pull what Favre did to GB. "Retire", wait until preseason and say he wants to come back, hoping to force the Bengals to release him or trade him at that point, figuring that they will be so entrenched in what they have prepared for that they won't have a roster spot, nor want to pay the money to have him ride the pine. Problem is that most likely will not work like it did for Brett. First, the Bengals don't have anybody to take the reigns at this point. Second, unless they draft a QB in the first and pay him a ridiculous sum of money or pick up a FA (not happening), they won't have that much money tied up in one position. The Bengals could easily just tell Carson to come on back and throw him right back into the starting lineup.

Mikey has beaten the IRS, has beaten the City of Cincinnati, has beaten Chad, Pickens, etc. He is too stubborn to back down on this. Best of luck, Carson. You are stuck. Same coach, same OC, same ownership, same jackass WR. Enjoy retirement.

I can totally see the Bengals staying $11m under the cap as a contingency should Carson come out of retirement. Pretty much tailor-made excuse for Mikey not to spend money next year.

Btw profootballtalk had an interview with Boomer that pretty much sets out the blueprint Mikey is likely to follow.

After the Bengals fire Sam Wyche, Esiason demanded a trade to either the Raiders or the Jets. Mikey said they weren't going to trade him. They drafted Klingler, kept Boomer for one last year and then traded him to the Jets the following season.

I think this is likely what will happen with Palmer. One year to ingrain the Mikey Boy mentality into the new guy and then off he goes to Seattle or wherever.

-QG

Read that as well. Seems like a probable course of action that Mikey would take.

Also on PFT, Marvin took another dig at Chad, saying Belichick is too smart to take Chad. So that divorce is alost certainly coming as well. This team is a trainwreck.

Whats the story on Dan LeFevour? Wasnt he thought to be a high pick and fell last year? Now he sits on Cincy's bench. What is the Cinci thought on him and how he rates vs this year's QB crop? Any chance he gets a shot before a rookie QB?

The Bears drafted him in Round 6 and cut him in training camp. Bengals picked him up pretty much right away. That they cut JTO instead of him doesn't necessarily say anything about LeFevour. Dunno if they see him as the guy of the future though - at least that buzz hasn't existed to this point.-QG

Bengals apparently were shuked about the whole Kosar thing so maybe there was nothing to that.

I believe this is a pivotal couple of weeks. We're past the Senior Bowl now so this is about the time next year's coaching staff will officially be announced, I believe. Or, probably the week that will crush the soul of Bengals fans. Still, they haven't announced next year's group so there's hope. It is clear that they value the experience of having their coaches at the Senior Bowl (3rd time in 8 years Marvin and staff have coached there) - making a change such as offensive coordinator before then would've likely precluded the Bengals from participating. It's the one slender thread of hope I have regarding them finally firing Bratkowski. (Btw, scouting the Senior Bowl does well to hold down the scouting budget, eh Mikey?). Anyhow the time is nigh.

reedy said zampese or mike sheppard were the frontrunners. sheppards results as an oc, in sd 97-98, buff 01 and new orleans in 2005 were abysmal. ofc, there are mitigating factors in all of those situations.

It is so Bengal like to have that guy dangle for a month, and also coach in the Senior Bowl, and make the decision.

Can one assume Palmer forced their hand?

I'd have to think Palmer softens his stance seeing Brat get the axe

I'm not 100% sure this wasn't plan A believe it or not.As I've mentioned previously in the thread, this staff/organization considers the Senior Bowl a gold mine of recruiting information and have done it every time the opportunity presented itself. Replacing the OC earlier would've foreclosed on that option almost certainly (big example - Carolina's house cleaning basically meant they wouldn't be able to do it). A big question is if Brat is gone totally from the organization or if, since he already apparently has a year left on a contract, they'll use him to scout. Any boosting of the scouting department would be good, and I frankly wouldn't object as we have drafted some good talent over the years*.If you go back in time, particularly to the press conference in hell, they indicated they would do it on their own time-line. That is totally consistent with Brat going now.-QG* - I take this back if taking Chris Perry over Steven Jackson was Brat's idea.

bengals.com says they are looking outside. (it also essentially says that Childress was in fact interviewed)

This was an interesting quote from Benson (bolding is mine):

Benson, a free agent who says the Bengals are still on his radar, said Monday he agrees with the move. He didn't back off from his belief that the Bengals need to recapture more of the smashmouth style that defined the 2009 playoff run. And he thinks they have enough talent even with the looming departures of Owens and fellow wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.

"It's good to see the Bengals making some moves," Benson said. "It's not just about going back to that '09 style, but being able to fit everything together and use our talent. And we've got a lot of talent and I don't see any drop off if those guys (Owens and Ocho) don't come back."

Benson, who says he could see himself here if Palmer isn't, hopes Palmer decides to come back.

"But he's got to be happy," Benson said. "He's such a big part of the puzzle that for him not to be happy, it would be tough

Praise Jeebus! Sucks it took so long, as I would have liked the replacement search to have had a bigger pool, but I've said all along that so long as Brat is gone, I don't care what else happens.

This. While I agree Mike Brown is a nightmare, Brat gone is huge. Also, with Brat gone next on the totem pole is Marvin (I'm giving him another chance, his ship hasn't sailed yet for me) if we don't see some improvement.

Don't they play the NFC West next year? Improvement is almost a foregone conclusion no matter what.Carry on the good fight, Drink G2, all 10 if the people I've tailgated with for the last 10 years are cashing out, and I've had so much trouble even finding people to take a free ticket from me that it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the seats my family has had since 1970 (me for the last 15 or so) are not going to be renewed. My only real regret is that Mike Brown will get to sell the COA again.I will still root for the Bengals, but I can't give Brown anymore of my cash.

Its hard, but I don't think Marvin is a bad coach. At this point he needs more control over other aspects of the team, and he needed a better OC who hadn't been with the team 2 years longer than he had, he needs someone is more creative, a better play caller, and someone who plays the exact style he wants. And he needs to get rid of Chad Johnson who has been there two years longer than Marvin.Marvin doesn't have roster control or say over big personal decisions so he has wait for everyones contract to expire without Mike Brown jumping in, wait till his franchise QB requests a trade and threatens retirement to get something done, or he has to publicly trash them. In order to even have a say in who is hired.

1360 Homer said the team doctor is out. What are the odds the Antonio Bryant file has also left the building?
Is Kevorkian out on bail? Gotta think that's the first call Mike Brown makes.Btw, congrats to not-Bob-Bratkowski for being named offensive coordinator.-QG

Rumor... Jay Gruden is the new OC.
Not a rumor  Actually that news was out when I posted but I thought his name was of secondary to the fact that he's not named Bob Bratkowski :thumbup:The 2 long-time team doctors have resigned btw. While it's not clear that they were at fault for some of the Bengals' medical-related woes here's to hoping that there's improvement in this area as well. Mikey Boy doesn't spend enough in general to be blowing $8m each year on the next Antonio Bryant!-QG

Isn't the doctor used by the Reds, Dr. Kremchek, one of the best sports med guys in the world? It seems like he is getting a lot of business from professional athletes outside of Cincinnati. Should be Mike Brown's first and only phone call.

Distractions remain an issue for drama-driven Bengals

By Steve Wyche NFL.com

Whether he is traded or not, Carson Palmer's days in Cincinnati might be drawing to a close.

Marvin Lewis is back as coach. Carson Palmer wants to be traded. Chad Ochocinco wants to become Chad Johnson again. Does it ever end with the Bengals? A season after so many things seemed pointed in the right direction, Cincinnati is back to being what it's been for so long: A question with few answers.

Lewis clearly wants to tighten up the ship and move on without so many distractions -- i.e. Ochocinco, Terrell Owens -- but he might not have much of a choice. After a 4-12, last-place finish in the AFC North, optimism has once again been tabled, especially with so many potential changes at key positions.

Let's examine:

1. Will Palmer really be traded?

No. Believe that. Even if a team were to offer Cincinnati a first-round pick, which wouldn't happen, the Bengals feel that they've invested too much in Palmer to let him go someplace else, particularly since there is no backup plan. That said, the Bengals better safeguard themselves by acquiring at least one quarterback and an heir apparent -- if he's not the same guy.

Palmer was very shaky last season and he realistically could have already played his best ball. If he has another season like the last, in which he threw for a lot of yards but also made a ton of mistakes, the Bengals will have to move on.

2. How much sway will Lewis have?

When Lewis and owner Mike Brown negotiated a new deal after the coach's contract expired after the season, there was a perception that Lewis would only come back under his terms and get more say in the shaping of his staff, the needed upgrades in the personnel department and the construction of an indoor facility.

So far, there hasn't been much change, hence, there's no indication that things are any different than they've been. There is little that has transpired to show that the skeleton personnel staff will be enhanced. Lewis could have more say in the draft and free agency, but with Brown controlling the purse strings and a salary cap returning (at some point), the augmentation through free agency could be limited -- as usual.

As for that indoor practice facility, sources indicate that could be constructed. When? Well, that remains to be seen.

3. Have we seen the last of T.Ochocinco?

It looks that way. Lewis is actually through with Ochocinco and his attention-seeking ways. He's tried to ignore him, but Ochocinco keeps banging the drum louder, typically through Twitter, to heighten his brand, which to Lewis means drawing attention to himself. As for Owens, he's been far more low key and is coming off a good season, but he looks like he'll be playing elsewhere as well.

The Bengals have a group of young targets (Jordan Shipley, Jerome Simpson and Jermaine Gresham) who they need to take center stage and that won't happen if T.Ochocinco is in the house.

On that note, Bengals coaches have privately said that part of the reason why Palmer looked so bad at times is because Ochocinco and Owens routinely broke off routes, leaving Palmer throwing the ball to areas (or opposing defenders).

4. Can Cincy run the ball?

That formula for success depends on what it does at running back. Veteran Cedric Benson is a free agent and the Bengals could be inclined to let him walk. Cincinnati likely will draft at least one bell-cow-type running back and hope that Bernard Scott finally develops and stays healthy.

Once they get that part worked out, someone needs to realize that the offensive line can be punishing when allowed to run block. This group is not built to throw as much as it did last season, but it can maul. Here's something to make Bengals fans possibly cringe: If there is a lockout/work stoppage because of the unsettled labor dispute, players won't be allowed at team facilities, thus, guys like undisciplined former first-round draft pick Andre Smith would be left unsupervised to get in shape.

We've seen how that's worked out the past two seasons.

5. Can the defense regain its dominance?

The Bengals lost a ton of players to injury and they were not set to withstand the losses. Plus, cornerbacks Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph didn't play like they did a year before.

If Cincinnati gets healthy, especially up front, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer should be able to get them back in order. The Bengals need to get a pass rusher and fortify the safety position. They also could finally move Rey Maualuga to middle linebacker, something they've wanted to do but felt he wasn't quite ready for during his first two seasons.

Brat to Atlanta as their QB coach. I wish him good luck (and heck have Matt Ryan to work with is pretty good luck already). It was time for him to go, but I do think as a person he was a class act in Cincy. Maybe he can work his way back up to be an OC and learn from his mistakes (especially the sin of predictability).
