Smells like chicken
Playoffs?

Vjax is gonna be franchised.

The Bolts have a first rounder, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds in the 2011 draft.

Mathews showed signs of life at the end of the season

Who will be the new DC? Ron Riveria gone?

Playoffs?
Yes, KC has been exposed as the pretenders that they are (only one quality win on the entire season), the Raiders will be better but still come up short, and the Chargers can't be nearly as bad on special teams or experience as many injuries as they did in 2010.
Vjax is gonna be franchised.
Him, or no one.... and I wouldn't be that upset if it was no one.

WR, CB, S, LB, and a T... not necessarily in that order.

I wonder who the Chargers will get to replace him.
The Chargers must replace defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, who has accepted the head coaching job with the Carolina Panthers.San Diego Chargers Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera was named head coach of the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday.“I’m excited for Ron,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “He has aspired to be an NFL head coach and I expect him to do an outstanding job.“Ron is an outstanding communicator. He has worked under and learned from a long list of head coaches. That experience will serve him well. The Panthers are fortunate to land Ron as their new head coach.”Chargers President Dean Spanos echoed Turner’s praise.“I appreciate Ron’s hard work and the support he and the defensive staff have provided Norv and the team,” Spanos said.Said General Manager A.J. Smith: “It’s been quite a wait for Ron, but it’s finally come. We are all happy for him. He is very much deserving of this opportunity.”Turner and the Chargers now will begin the process of finding a new defensive coordinator. The Chargers’ defense made great strides over the past three years. The defensive staff, comprised of Rivera, secondary coach Steve Wilks, linebackers coach John Pagano, line coach Don Johnson, assistant secondary coach Cris Dishman and assistant linebackers coach Greg Williams, helped the unit improve from an overall defensive ranking of 25th in the NFL, including 11th against the run and 31st against the pass in 2008, to 16th overall in 2009 and first overall in 2010. In particular, the pass defense has improved from an overall ranking of 31st in 2008 to first in 2010.Wilks and Pagano are expected to be interviewed for the position as well as potential candidates outside the organization.Turner and his defensive staff began implementing a more aggressive defensive philosophy following the ’09 season, which proved beneficial this season.“Everyone throws the ball so well now. The yardage is up. The scoring is up,” Turner said back in July. “You have to find a way to get stops. The quicker you get a stop, the quicker we get the ball back offensively. You look at the teams that create turnovers, stops, sacks and fumbles. You get those things when you’re playing aggressively. I think that style will fit our players.“You have to either be disrupting the quarterback, and you do that with pressure, or you have to be disrupting receivers, banging them off the line, jamming them. If you’re not rushing more than four, you better be doing a great job of disrupting receivers’ routes so the quarterback has to hold the ball.”Turner has complete confidence in his current defensive staff.“I feel we have one of the top defensive staffs in the league, and I see no reason why we can’t continue that same excellence and even improve in 2011,” Turner said.

Here in Tampa, the local sports talk people who are heavy into the Bucs are really sad to see Bisaccia go to the Chargers. He was very highly thought of, and some think he could be a HC someday. They were saying that to keep the Bucs continuity three things needed to happen, Morris needed to have his option picked up (check), Dominik needed to have his option picked up (check) and Biasccia needed to be retained (no check).SD will surely improve in special teams next year (if there is a next year). This sounds like a great hire for the Chargers.

I want the midnight blue helmets back.
Fouts era with Yellow facemasks and yellow pants with bolts down the leg
Also awesome.Which reminds me, why can't we keep awesome receivers with #83 around? Jefferson, Miller, Jackson - great Charger receivers who ended up getting mad about their contracts and leaving. Jefferson and Miller both were never the same after they left - take note Vincent.

Chargers | Eyeing Nnamdi Asomugha Thu Jan 13, 04:29 PM

The San Diego Chargers are discussing signing Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha now that he will become a free agent, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee. However, the Chargers landing Asomugha would be a long shot. The Philadelphia Eagles are also expected to make a run for him. If the Chargers were to sign Asomugha, CB Antoine Cason would likely move to free safety.

Our view: Asomugha will be one of the hottest free agents this offseason, and there should be several teams interested in adding the All-Pro cornerback.

More Bolts speculation. The defense needs stephen cooper, they were a different unit with him out there

Panthers | May be interested in two SD linebackers Fri Jan 14, 02:47 PM

The Carolina Panthers may show interest in San Diego Chargers impending free-agent LBs Kevin Burnett and Stephen Cooper this offseason, reports Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Chargers | Seyi Ajirotutu may be No. 4 or 5 WR next season Fri Jan 14, 02:45 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Seyi Ajirotutu will get the chance to win the No. 4 or No. 5 wide receiver job next season, reports Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our view: With his continued development he could climb even higher on the depth chart. Ajirotutu made some good plays this year, but is still somewhat raw after going undrafted out of Fresno State.

Chargers | Likely will place franchise tag on Vincent Jackson Fri Jan 14, 02:31 PM

The San Diego Chargers likely will place the franchise tag on impending free-agent WR Vincent Jackson this offseason if there is still a franchise tag under the new collective bargaining agreement, reports Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Chargers | Quentin Jammer to stay at CB Fri Jan 14, 02:27 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said CB Quentin Jammer will stay at cornerback next season and will not be moved to safety, reports Scott Bair, of the North County Times. Jammer said he eventually will have to move to safety but believes he can play cornerback for another three to four years.

Cooper is the most important guy in terms of players they need to retain. The defense would take a big hit if he left.

SD was the #1 ranked offense AND defense in terms of yards gained. Special teams have to be one of the main reasons they missed the playoffs.

I hope they give VJax the money to stay and they can focus on other needs in the draft and FA. Would like to see Siler back at LB. Naanee was nice but he is a #3/4 and both Crayton and Seyi serve that purpose better IMO.

What is M Floyd's status?

R Matthews HAS to be better if healthy and given the ball. He has a higher ceiling then Tolbert too, but its a nice combo to have. Let Sproles go and look at a guy like Noel Devine later in the draft and some guys that can contribut in ST would be great.

Also need a coach who can get them up for the begiining of the season instead of making every game after Sept a playoff game.

Also need to not move up and give away all the picks.

IMO Norv is Norv so I expect more of the same. I agree pay Vjax. I think that Floyd is a RFA could be UFA be he is a FA.Re-sign Cooper, I herd that Riveria is going to go after him this off-seasonMathews will be fine and Tolbert provides insurance. Teams biggest needs: Oline/Dline, Saftey, WR depth, LBs

Jackson, Floyd, and Naanee are all UFAs.

Pay VJaxif Floyd and/or Naanee are cheap, re-sign, if not, look for another #2 wr or let Seyi compete for it.

Chargers sign 2, tender a bunch. Naanee not tendered, will become unrestricted free agent.

Chargers sign two, 10 receive offers

By Christopher Smith, Chargers.com

Ogemdi Nwagbuo and James Holt signed contracts Wednesday while others, including starters Malcom Floyd, Eric Weddle and Jeromey Clary, received tenders from the team.

SAN DIEGO – The Chargers signed Ogemdi Nwagbuo and James Holt to contracts Wednesday and made contract offers (“tenders”) to 10 other players. Teams must make a contract offer (“tender”) to maintain negotiating rights.

“We’re moving forward under the current agreement, which is what we have to work with at this time,” General Manager A.J. Smith said.

San Diego placed tenders on nine restricted free agents, maintaining rights to the players as outlined in the current collective bargaining agreement. Malcom Floyd received the highest tender, described as a first and third-round tender, which is what the Chargers would get in compensation under the current rules should another team sign the receiver. San Diego would have to elect not to match another team’s offer.

The Chargers placed a first-round tender on safety Eric Weddle. Others that received tenders include linebacker Antwan Applewhite, tackle Jeromey Clary and running back Mike Tolbert (second round); cornerback Dante Hughes (third round); linebacker Antwan Barnes and safety Paul Oliver (fourth round); and linebacker Brandon Siler (seventh round).

Exclusive rights free agent tackle Brandyn Dombrowski also was tendered.

Linebacker Darry Beckwith, fullback Billy Latsko, receiver Legedu Naanee, long snapper Ryan Neill and safety Pat Watkins were not tendered. They will become free agents following the expiration of their contracts on March 3.
Would someone want to pick up Tolbert for a 2nd rounder?

IMO a number of teams should consider it, especially teams with late 2nd round picks. And what about Siler for a seventh?

looks like Floyd and Vjax will be back next year. Hopefully Gates recovery goes well.

I dont think all 3 top target where on the field together last year, not to mention injuries to Crayton and Naanee (who I herd wasnt tendered and probably wont be back)

I wonder if the Naanee thing means Craig "The Bust" Davis will be back?

Yeah I'd rather see what Ajirotutu and Goodman can do to round out the 5 WR spots. Maybe they go with 6 WR since they had so much trouble keeping guys healthy - but considering Davis struggles staying healthy anyway I see no reason to keep Davis anymore.

Nannee and is "Do you know who I am?" arrest are gone. Vjax, Floyd, Crayton, Seyi and prob a drafted WR will round it out. Davis, if the contract isnt bad, may get a chance to compete.Tolbert will be back since I doubt he is worth a 2nd to anyone else. FB and spot starter if Matthews isnt healthy or holding on to the the ball. I see Tolbert's path = McClain in Balt.

saw something that said the colts wer every interested in weddle.

aj seems to like him. moved up to grab him and all.

I could take him or leave him

Weddle and Burnett should be the top two priorities. Along with Garay, they were the three best players on defense last season.

I'm not sure I'd want to pay $7M a year for Weddle. He's still not quite making all the plays it seems he could to earn that kind of money.I think Cooper is the top priority.

I agree the Def was at its best level when Cooper was in there and if he hits the market I bet you Riveria tries to get him in CarolinaSanders looks like Weddle insurance.

I'll be furious if they let Weddle get away. If he catches 2-3 of the picks he dropped last year, he's starting in the Pro Bowl. Charger fans seem to focus on the big plays he doesn't make, instead of giving him credit for always being in the right place and almost always (Jamal Charles and Shonn Greene excluded) making the tackle.

Absolutely LOVE the Sanders gamble.

5 picks in the first 3 rounds of what is supposedly an extremely deep draft. This is the year Charger fans. Get your futures in Vegas now.

I think Weddle is an average NFL saftey. nothing more, nothing less. 7 million seems like a lot to pay him to me

I agree with TGunZ on Weddle. He played at a Pro Bowl level last season, IMO. He needs to hang onto more of those potential INTs, but he's above average in coverage, and he's among the very best safeties in the league at defending the run. Pairing him with a healthy Bob Sanders would be sick.

He needs to hang onto more of those potential INTs, but he's above average in coverage, and he's among the very best safeties in the league at defending the run.
He also needs to improve his tackling. Way too often he's going in for the big hit (which he's really too small to deliver) and not wrapping up, or just tackling too high on bigger RBs where he should be going at the legs, resulting in busted tackles and extra yardage. To me that's as big a flaw as his problems completing INTs. He's a good S but he could be better.

Although he isn't perfect, I think Weddle played like one of the top 5-10 safeties in the league, and I doubt I am alone. That doesn't necessarily make him worth $7 mil though.

Cooper think's he's not going to be back with the Chargers

"I think I'm going to have an opportunity to test the market," Cooper said Saturday.

Cooper has been rehabbing two sprained knees, which he played through for 11 games in 2010, including a masterful performance in the Chargers' Nov. 28 victory at Indianapolis. He said he is "excited" for the opportunity.

The Chargers are, likewise, excited to give Donald Butler a shot at a starting job after he missed his rookie season with a torn Achilles'. And they will likely make a strong run at keeping Kevin Burnett, who will also be an unrestricted free agent.
A.J. already baffling Weddle's agent.
On Saturday, Smith articulated his own opinion on the matter.

“First, we don’t know Eric’s status yet,” Smith said, referring to the fact the NFL considers Weddle a restricted free agent under the current CBA. “Second, if he should become (an unrestricted) free agent, I would hope by now everyone understands how we operate around here.”

That, of course, is a reference to Smith’s oft-stated mantra that the Chargers decide who remains a Charger, the timing of contracts and their monetary value.

“Eric is a great kid and an outstanding player,” Smith said. “He is exactly the type of player we want to be a part of the Chargers organization. If we should offer a contract, we would present a contract to his agent, David Canter, both in years and money. Our hope then would obviously be he likes it and accepts. If not, as Eric said, he will be moving on in a heartbeat, as will we.”

Smith then turned his attention to Canter, who stated his disappointment the Chargers have not wanted to engage in substantive talks.

“Regarding David Canter and his comment he is ‘baffled,’ “ Smith said, “(Chargers vice president) Ed McGuire has had several conversations with David regarding Eric. I have also had a conversation with David regarding Eric, and Coach Turner has talked with David.

“All I can say is I’m baffled (that) he’s baffled regarding our position at this point in time.”

While Smith’s take is, as usual, straightforward and provocative, it is all part of the process. His history is to deal on his timetable but to ultimately make the best effort to keep players he wants. It wouldn't be a stretch to say Weddle will be the Chargers' top priority once the new league year begins. That doesn’t mean he won’t receive a substantially better offer elsewhere, but the Chargers are expected to present a competitive deal.

First, everyone must await the outcome of continued CBA negotiations. Weddle is one of at least a dozen players expected to be unrestricted free agents that the Chargers must address when the time comes.

“Once we have clarity and direction on who our free agents are,” Smith said, “we will proceed and let you know which players we would like to have back and which players we have decided to inform that we will be going another direction.”

I don't know why Canter is baffled. I think it's pretty obvious that the Chargers like Weddle and want to keep him, but they're not going to offer him a contract worthy of an unrestricted free agent until they know whether he's restricted or unrestricted. He'll probably be unrestricted, but why offer him a contract along those lines until it's settled?

Hooray?

I heard a bit of an interview with Warren Sapp today on the Dan Patrick show. They were initially talking about Fairley (and Suh), Sapp saying he thought Fairley's arms were too long and he needed too much space to work, then unsolicited Sapp started talking about how scary he thought Garay and Liuget will be.

As a pseudo UCLA fan I hope they can land Ayers and/or Moore. They'd probably have to trade up to get Ayers. Regardless I hope they can find a way to help out the outside pass rush.

I was hoping for Phil Taylor, kinda surprised they didnt snag Prince either.
They had Jimmy Raye on the San Diego sports talk station last night, and he said Liuget was their guy all along. They did take pause when Prince was still available at their pick, but they stuck with their initial decision.

Avoiding CBs from Nebraska is a pretty smart draft move for the most part. Here's some dirt on Liuget from CBSSports:

OverviewAlthough Liuget (pronounced "legit") appeared to come out of nowhere as a top prospect in the team's 2010 bowl win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl, he was highly-recruited as one of the top prospects from the Miami area and quite productive with the Illini throughout his career despite losing playing time due to veteran depth at the position. As a true freshman Liuget started two of the 11 games in which he played, making 26 tackles, five for loss and 1.5 sacks. He received only four starting nods in 2009, but still managed eight tackles for loss (of 36 stops), 2.5 sacks and three pass break-ups. His performance in the 2010 Texas Bowl win was certainly impressive (5 tackles, 2.5 TFL, sack), but he already been named second-team All-Big 10 for his play during the regular season. He finished with 63 tackles, 12.5, 4.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries on the year. The Miami native's versatility may be what puts him among the top defensive tackle prospects in this class. His ability to get consistent pass rush from the three-technique and nose spots will excite teams using four-man fronts. His experience at the five-technique and nose tackle positions his season should intrigue 3-4 teams, as well.AnalysisPass rush: Tough for many college interior linemen to handle one-on-one in pass protection. Quick enough to beat lesser linemen off the snap at three-tech, uses his hands to free himself from block when there is enough space to do so. Gets his man on skates or pushes through a block (or double) to the quarterback to get pressure. Also strong and quick enough to play on the nose in obvious passing situations. Recovers from strong punch to run through a gap immediately. Does not have elite closing speed, but his hustle and ability to stay low make him difficult to escape within or outside the pocket.Run defense: Stout defender who plays with a strong base. Penetrates into the backfield with quickness. Lines up at three and five-technique spots. Capable of stack-shed inside or outside. Gets past reach blocks on inside runs with quick feet and strength to keep blocker on his shoulder. Usually keeps his head up to find the ball. Lacks acceleration to keep outside containment as a five-technique. Not consistent defeating cut blocks with his hands.Explosion: Not elite in his first step, but has enough to be a pass rush and penetrating run-stopper inside. Ballcarriers feel every bit of his strength when he tackles them, and blockers are bruised up with his punching and swiping throughout the game.Strength: His ability to play multiple positions not only comes from his quick feet, but also his strength. Lands a big punch into the chest of his man, swipes with aggression to move the blocker aside. Uses his low center of gravity to his advantage, getting leverage to stack one-on-one and shed to either direction when playing two-gap at nose tackle. Senses zone block, uses blocker's inertia against him with a strong push to get into the backfield. Usually anchors well against single and double blocks, but can get moved by NFL-caliber linemen.Tackling: Strong upper body, hustle, and good length make him an excellent tackler. Engulfs running backs in the backfield when able to penetrate. Built low to the ground, displays excellent change of direction ability to stay in front of backs cutting against the grain. Hustles 10-15 yards downfield to make or help on tackles. Adds himself to piles when able. Lacks elite closing speed to chase down backs from behind. Tends to run out of steam when playing a lot at the end of games.Intangibles: Coaches say Liuget is a leader in the locker and meetings rooms. Chose Illinois over southern schools because of head coach Ron Zook. Wished to transfer after two years in Champaign due to home sickness; mother said he would not be welcome home if he transferred.--Chad Reuter2010 SeasonLiuget had a career year in 2010, earning second-team All-Big Ten accolades after recording 63 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries and three passes broken up. Avoiding CBs from Nebraska is a pretty smart draft move for the most part.
:goodposting: I was very happy with the Liuget pick. KC and Oak pushed us around last year. With the poor QB's in the AFC West, stopping the run needs to be priority 1A, 1B, and 1C. Liuget should be a big help.I see Kiper has the Bolts taking the WR from Kentucky with one of our 2nd rounders. Sounds good to me.
