49er fans should call it "The Grab" or "The Redemption". Because there is only one "The Catch". Unless you're a Rocky fan. "The Catch VIII, directed by Sylvester Stallone"

I disagree. The 49ers have a history of playoff "catches", why not continue the legacy. The Catch: Montana to ClarkThe Catch 2: Young to OwensThe Catch 3: Smith to DavisIts pretty remarkable, I see no reason to change the name.Or, sticking with the movie theme:The CatchThe Catch II - Young's revengeThe Catch III - This time, it's personal...

Both TD's post "The Catch" hadn't ushered in Dynasty that led into an unprecedented Division and Post-Season run for almost 2 decades. The Catch pretty much changed a lot of the NFL as far as coaching trees too. I mean, if you think TO ushered in a new era of 49er football (after "The Drops" and "The missed Rice fumble" in the same game), then more power to ya I guess.

What's the latest on Delanie? You know Vernon is gonna get extra attention.
http://www.sacbee.com/2012/01/19/4198288/49ers-notes-delanie-walker-returns.html#mi_rss=49ersSANTA CLARA – Wearing a face shield on his helmet, 49ers tight end Delanie Walker returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since breaking his jaw in two places Dec. 24.Walker was a limited participant in the session, and he initially wore a black jersey that designated him as someone who is to avoid contact. Walker suffered the injury in Week 16 when the knee of a Seattle Seahawks linebacker caught him underneath his chin guard. The tight end's jaw was wired shut shortly thereafter, limiting him to a diet of soup and blended foods. The wiring was released two weeks ago, and it was removed entirely Monday.Walker's return to action Sunday would be a boon to a passing game that has been missing some of its firepower in recent weeks. In addition to Walker's absence, Braylon Edwards was released last month and Ted Ginn has been dealing with ankle and knee injuries and may not play Sunday.Walker led the 49ers in receptions and receiving yards in their regular-season 27-20 victory over the New York Giants, and he and fellow tight end Vernon Davis are seen as keys to taking advantage of the Giants' linebackers.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------also, in a presser, Harbaugh had this to say:Reporter: TE Delanie Walker told us he expects to play. Any update there? He announced it, sort of, that he hopes to put the pads on Sunday.Harbaugh: "Yeah, that would be our hope, too. We'll have to wait and see. Today will be the first practice. You see how he responds to today's work, today's treatment. We'll know more tomorrow, more the next day. Ultimately, it will be in the doctor's hands." http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/niners-talk/post/Harbaugh-Giants-are-a-cruel-team?blockID=633926&feedID=5936

I get your point....but I see them all as incredible, improbable last minute TD passes that won playoff games. Yes, the first one was the beginning of a new era and dynasty, and was more historic, but (IMO) that doesnt make the others any less exciting or amazing. We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. :banned:Sunday needs to get here already!!!!

It just needs it's own name, that's all. "The Catch" is historic in many ways, and should just stand alone by itself. Many a 49er fan calling the TD against NO "The Catch III" weren't even born when the real "The Catch" was made. Just hate to see it watered down.

"The Catch" is a play that DAL and their fans will never forget... ever.As much as I love TO's catch vs. GB, I just don't think it had that much of an effect to anyone else but 9er fans.Vernon's catch, on the other hand, is one that I think will have the same effect on NO and their fans as did Clark's grab vs. DAL. Vernon's catch should get a unique name, IMO.

Personally, I think that play needs a different name. There can be only one "The Catch". I'm cool with "The Grab", although even that seems a bit contrived.

Seeing where and how he caught the ball (in the body, holding it for dear life), I'd nominate "The Clutch" because it has multiple meanings.

But really, naming it will be for naught if we don't win the superbowl, so how about we address this later? ;)

The 49er FO I think loves that play being called "The Catch III". That way they can tie into the past glory years.

"Let's call it The Catch III, so everybody can forget the last playoff game that ended with Mooch being fired watching Joe Millionaire, and ushered in Erickson, Nolan, and Singletary"

You guys are all talking about the wrong play.

The true play of the game was the Whitner hit on Thomas. It accomplished the following:

1) knocked Thomas out of the game, severely hampering NO's screen attack.

2) Changed a sure touchdown for NO into a turnover and subsequet TD for the niners.

3) got the crowd into the game early. Candlestick would've quieted down early had NO scored on the opening drive.

No question that play set the tone early, but that play would have been all but forgotten if not for the last second TD.

Good point. That play was huge. But I'm going to agree with Wingnut.

looks like Ginn might not play at all. that's a big loss for US* imo.

not only on special teams where Kyle Williams is known to muff it up (and in this weather it's scary) but also on offense where we have no WR depth at all.

The Giants could cheat but they'd still have to respect his speed and knack for more tricky plays like endarounds.

glad to see Delaine back, that's a huge plus.

Also love how the media gives us little chance again, in love with their little precious Eli vs Brady story.

* if you are a certain poster, US, WE, etc= 49ers

It's not a good thing to lose any regulars this far into the playoffs, but if it's going to happen Ginn is one of the easiest pieces to lose.

it seems so, but I think special teams play a big part come this sunday, especially in those conditions everyone is expecting.but yes, you are right for the most part. I just can't stop remembering that terrible punt by the Giants in the regular season meeting and how Ginn brought it out well (of course, that happened after a TERRIBLE drop by him that resulted in a pick instead of a first down in the red zone so it kinda evened out :) )

Really? With all the hardware owned by the Dallas Cowboys, it seems silly for them to focus on an NFC title game loss.
Just my opinion, as usual. I'm pretty sure any DAL fan hasn't forgotten that catch and the ones that witnessed it re-live that moment it when they think about it. Just like I re-live the TO grab and remember exactly where I was and the feeling I had as it happened when I think about it. Hard to explain, really.

I disagree. Ginn is an excellent return man and servicable 3rd WR. With Ginn out, it is a huge dropoff to Kyle returning kicks and ~El Salmonete Blanco Swain~ at WR.

I know that Everson Walls is still making money off getting beat by Dwight Clark

Kyle Williams is going to get more work than Swain at wr.
Agreed, Kyle is by default our WR2 this week. With Ginn out, ~El Salmonete Blanco~ is our WR3. Sorry, should have been clear about the WR3.

Gotcha. I still say losing Ginn isn't ideal but on the extremely small opportunity (4 kr/2 pr) Williams has had in the return game he's been extremely comparable to Ginn. I'll welcome Ginn back on this team but imo he's one of the easiest pieces to replace right now. His 2 catches/20 yards a game can be eaten up by the others. Much rather lose him than the fullback, one of the defenders, or heaven forbid an offensive lineman.

I know Ginn is not much of a deep threat, but IMO he's the only player (sans VD) that can keep NY from sitting 8-9 in a box.

This is why we better hope that Walker is able to play at 100%

Not sure if all of you guys are local to the bay area, but here are some songs/videos that have been popping up lately. Note: Most (All) of these are rap/hip-hop type songs... not sure if this is your cup of tea...

GO NINERS!

Anyone else going tomorrow??? :banned:

I was wrong. Ginn being out was HUGE. Such a painful loss. It's one thing to lose...it's another to piss away the victory.
I don't think I've been this devastated about a sporting event in 10 years. Much rather would have had Eli connect on a bomb or something to win. Hate to see our team lose by shooting themselves in the foot.

Hell of a season, I hated to see it end in that fashion. No one thought wed make it as far as we did.

Chin up folks. We are now a contender and will be for years to come.

Here's to an incredible season :banned:

This is kind of my worst-case scenario for the postseason. Alex Smith somehow steps up against the Saints and earns a long-term contract, then turns back into the turd he is and prevents the Niners from going to the Super Bowl not only this year but for however many years he signs.

Alex Smith...starter for the next 3 years? The receivers...this game was not promising but they should be solid enough. The defense is great. Hoping Carlos comes back.

I really have no problem with Smith. I thought he played a very good game. He had no weapons out there to throw to - they eventually bottled up Davis, and Crabtree is a decent WR2 at best. No one was getting open and he still kept some drives alive with his legs and didn't turn it over. It's not like he was missing wide open guys all night.

Never thought I'd say this at the beginning of the year, but I'm not apprehensive about bringing him back at all. Hopefully they find another legitimate weapon in the passing game outside of VD who can make a play once in a while.

In fairness to Alex Smith (and Im far from the biggest supporter of him) is he has ZERO weapons outside of VD. Michael Crabtree? Did he even play tonight?

Yeah, that was my thought too. I'm glad I'm not Kyle Williams tonight. The game turned out to be as close as expected. Can't wait for the draft to see if we can improve even more!

I wish I wasn't right. Oof.Morgan and Ginn and we win. Tough to battle NY tough to tough like that w/o any weapons besides VD. Very disapointed in Crabs.Great season, very proud to be a Niner fan.

The fumble in overtime only sped up the inevitable outcome in my opinion.. The Giants were moving the ball, the 9ers didn't seem to have anything going on..

I hope Kyle Williams isn't a very good player because I don't see how he ever suits up for SF after that game. It is rare to see a player literally hand the game to the other team, and here we have a guy that gifted two turnovers in the red zone when the Giants couldn't muster anything on their own - usually you can chalk up a bad fumble as part of a team loss but two fumbles in such spectacular fashion, one letting the punchless Giants get to OT and the other letting them win in OT. I can't imagine the fans ever forgetting that.

I'm not so sure about that. The defense was turning it on at the end (neither team was moving the ball in the end). If not for that last fumble, I think we would have seen another couple possessions each.

I think most SF fans can get over it if he says/does the 'right' things and starts playing as a solid #2/good #3 wr. If he comes out and says something along the lines of "I really screwed up and won't push the blame anywhere. I blew it. I can't look back - all I can do is work my butt off to help this team get another shot at the Super Bowl. 2012 here we come!"

And usually you can point to this or some other play to make it into a team loss, but I'm having a real tough time turning what Kyle did into a team loss. Oof.
