The fumble in overtime only sped up the inevitable outcome in my opinion.. The Giants were moving the ball, the 9ers didn't seem to have anything going on..
I'm not so sure about that. The defense was turning it on at the end (neither team was moving the ball in the end). If not for that last fumble, I think we would have seen another couple possessions each.
Seemed the Giants offense was getting the first downs, and yardage in OT, seemed the 9ers were not..

I hope Kyle Williams isn't a very good player because I don't see how he ever suits up for SF after that game. It is rare to see a player literally hand the game to the other team, and here we have a guy that gifted two turnovers in the red zone when the Giants couldn't muster anything on their own - usually you can chalk up a bad fumble as part of a team loss but two fumbles in such spectacular fashion, one letting the punchless Giants get to OT and the other letting them win in OT. I can't imagine the fans ever forgetting that.
Good teams overcome bad breaks. For example the Giants overcame a blown call (out of bounds) on the first VD td, a bad spot on the Brandon Jacobs 4th and 1, and bogus illegal contact call that gave the niners a 1st down on a 3rd and real long.

I think you need to look up the term "non sequitur"

Ignore the trolls, gb

No dog in this fight but this Bears fan has a few thoughts:

1. The league is better off when the 49ers are good. Too much tradition for this team to be a sideshow;

2. The defense is legit but Alex Smith is still a real problem;

3. I feel terrible for Kyle Williams. I'm not sure how a person gets past that game.

Anyway, my (obvious) $.02.

Great article from the Wall Street Journal about the defensive effort in the Giants' game: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203806504577179120491199182.html

I don't know if it helps soften the sting, but:

- Giants ran 93 plays (most all season)

- 58 Pass attempts (most all season)

- Held Eli to 5.45 yards per attempt (lowest all season)

- Eli's passer rating was 82.3 (one of the lowest all season)

- Stopped the giants on 5 drives in a row to prevent game winning fg's

- Held Ahmad Bradshaw to 74 yards / 3.3 per carry

- 6 Sacks, 7 Hits, 13 pressures.

Calling it one of the greatest defensive performances in playoff history.

If only....

Thanks for chiming in.I think we'll be seeing Alex for at least the next couple years after how successful this season was. I'm actually pretty excited to see how Alex does after having a full camp and off-season under Harbaugh's wings... actually I can't wait to see how the entire team does after having a full camp to gel. :excited:As for Kyle... from what I've read, he's getting full support from his team mates and especially the fans. IMO, I don't know how he gets over that mentally, either, but it sounds like he's no stranger to choking in the playoffs (as evident by the article I posted in the KW thread and the AZ State alum that commented and pretty much predicted this would happen). With that said, and as someone else had mentioned here, considering that he was the 5th WR on the depth chart and is pretty much 86'd from special teams as a returner, I don't think we'll see Kyle in an SF uniform (assuming that our WRs come back healthy and especially if we pick up a decent name in free agency). Too bad though, the kid flashed some really good things in the regular season and he's got some wheels.

We'll have to agree to disagree on A. Smith. I liked Kyle Williams coming in but this is a huge mental obstacle.

Let me be clear... I'm all for putting someone better than Alex back there. But I just think our FO will be re-signing Alex for the near future (hopefully nothing long-term). So my feedback is more of an optimistic "make due with what ya got" thought process. So I agree with you... sorta.

Aha, I'm with you now. I completely understand that view and have been in the same boat basically my entire life with the Bears. Do you think there is any chance Harbaugh makes a bold move and brings in a FA or gives Colin Kaepernick a real shot? He strikes me as the kind of coach that will play his best guys regardless of other influences (last season, contract status, etc.).

I'll begin by stating that I thought the Niners D played great and proved their toughness. They're a physical unit and they like to hit you. Not the type of club most offenses want to face. That being said, I don't see how anyone can rank the performance among best playoff performances ever. The simple fact that the Giants ran 93 plays is testament to that. The Giants sliced them on third downs early in the game. They didn't force a turnover. They didn't find a pass rush until the second half.

Not a slam on their overall performance as they did play some strong D in that game but putting it in a best ever category is Jim Nantz hyperbole.

Personally I don't think Harbaugh is going to guarantee Alex the starting job just because the team went 13-3 in the regular season. He's smart enough to know that the defense carried the offense, and the reason he's not in the Superbowl was because of the offense.

That said, he may have seen those flashes that he wanted to see, and it may be safer to spend his resources in wide receivers rather than teaching a new QB the same book.

But I think that if Kaepernick excels in the camps and preseason, it's not out of the question that Alex gets replaced.

Just my two cents. My crystal ball ain't any clearer than yours.

:goodposting: I think you are correct

The 49ers can try to find more weapons for Smith. He won't throw to them, but they can keep trying.
I agree (sadly). I was at the game and saw a lot of single coverage on Crab and KW that Alex should have dropped it in like he's done so many times with VD. I hope this changes for next year (assuming he's our starter).

The Terrell Owens GQ article makes me wonder if the Niners would be in the Super Bowl had they brought Owens in for very little.

I just finished reading the article. No doubt he would have been an asset to SF in the skills department. I've always been a fan of his since he made his splash onto the scene in 96. He's just too emotional on the field that I could see Smith's inability to get him the ball causing something bad that the media would eat up. I just don't thing Harbaugh wants to take that risk.I do think that it's possible that since TO is at his lowest of lows (since he's joined the nfl), that maybe he's been humbled enough to see that he can't afford to cause those kinds of problems at this stage of his career. He was pretty awesome during his recent season with Ciny and his work ethic has kept him in superman condition. I don't think we will see him in an nfl uniform again, unless he somehow lights things up in the IFL? And even then, with his knee issue and age, I can't imagine an nfl team would want a 40 year old wr that has demonstrated that he can single handedly ruin a locker room with his own actions. He is still my favorite player thoug... At least until I can find a replacement, lol

So what FA WRs do we go after in the off-season?

Simpson?

Colston?

Meachem?

Vincent Jackson?

Desean Jackson?
I think Desean Jackson is the best value.
Absolutely ... If you are trying to destroy everything you built this season.
He is a very good receiver who was top 10-15 before his team alienated him by grossly overpaying some players while keeping him in his rookie pay scale in the last year of his contract. Anyone who didn't foresee a blowup coming this season wasn't paying attention. He will now be able to be signed below his actual value with less guaranteed money, probably with an incentive laden contract. The fact that he has Bay Area ties may make the option more likable for him. He will definitely cost less than any of the others listed with the possibility of Meachem and brings just as much upside.

By all means bring him on then. He will do wonders for Alex Smith's confidence.

I think Harbaugh is savvy enough to know we need better talent at WR and he'll press to address that issue in the offseason. He may want to resign Smith but I don't think he's completely sold on him even with the year he had. I think Kaepernick will get a lot of reps in TC and get plenty of playing time in preseason as surely Harbaugh will feel better about his coaching future if he can have a franchise QB.They took Kaepernick in the 2nd round and Jim will wanna see if he can be the guy. I still don't think Smith is a franchise type QB and I don't think Harbaugh believes it either even if he's publicly backed Smith. There's several key issues & positions that need addressed in the offseason and Harbaugh will work hard to take care of it.I definitely feel a lot better about our future now with Harbaugh running the show.
