We're leading the league in turnover ratio. That's always a sign of a well coached team.
in the postgame interview, alex smith basically said Singletary wouldn't have been capable of making the same halftime adjustments. This is the first professionally coached offensive team since Mariucci left town.

When was the last time this team won a road game out east? I seriously use to just consider them a loss the last 10 years or so. Two in a row under Harbaugh. I'm really not expecting too much this year, but it is great to see a Coach that can make adjustments & put the players in position to win some games.

Ideas for a subtitle update? Someone get Wingnut on this. :D

The bad - Josh Morgan was hurt. Goldson got a bit heated at times and let his emotions get the best of him at least once. Crabtree wasn't on the same page as Smith.

The good (and there's lots of that)! The Niners haven't won by this much since 1987.

Alex Smith was benched...because he played so well and the game was a blowout! He has looked very good this year. I know at least one person is going to come challenge this statement but Alex Smith has looked very good not just this game but this season. He's looked better each game. There have been several reports about the differences between Singletary and Harbaugh. It's unbelievable to hear some of the crap prior coaches pulled with Smith.

Anthony Davis had a very good game. Our o-line is fairly young and it was a delight to see our young tackle finally have a very good game.

Our linebackers will soon be the best in the NFL.

The team is looking like a team. Crabtree was chatting with Alex Smith on the sidelines after they had a miscommunication. Goldson made a good block early in the game on the pick 6.

Goldson made Ronnie Lott-esque hits today.

Lastly, we're 4-1. That is a something no SF fan saw coming.

As a side note, congratulations to the team across the bay on their victory. It's nice to see the bay area teams slowly returning to glory.

:confetti:

Now I feel badly about rooting against the Niners at the end of the Dallas game when I was still hoping they'd suck for Luck.

Love what Smith has been able to do under Harbaugh. He's not a Super Bowl QB, but as many have said, he was our best option in the strike shortened off season. The Nolan/Singletary era was a nightmare for offensive play calling. Expecting even better play after the week 7 bye. Looking forward to see if the hate is still there from some of the usual suspects.

It's a bit worrisome that Crabtree and Smith seemed to have the best chemistry in 2009. In 2010 of course like 3/4 of Smith's INTs were throwing to Crabtree and this year they never got in the lab. Hopefully with Morgan and Edwards out they can get something going, cause if not, that leaves....Ted Ginn :bag:

I think he pluralized it to throw off the scent. It's pretty much one donkey. I hope he stays clear of this thread seeing how he is looking more and more like an idiot.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Smith is being managed well. He isn't killing the team like he used to. The defense has been real key here in this win streak and well as ST, and that's helping Smith out to not have everything put on his arm.

Glad to see your coming around. Yes, Smith is being managed well, just as he was managed poorly by Nolan/Singletary. Most that argued with you didn't say Smith was a top talent, just that Harbaugh would put him in a better situation & squeeze more out of him than previous coaching staffs.

Well, we're really talking over 6 quarters of consistent and serviceable performance from Smith that also coincides with very, very good performances from the other 2 phases: defense and special teams. That to me has been even more impressive than Smith finally taking the step forward he supposed to take after 2006. Now there are a ton of factors involved in that, but there have been other young QB's that also were in less than favorable situations where they have took over and commanded the position. In 2009 and 2010 Smith showed that he couldn't be the primary factor, the X factor on offense, and to be honest, he really still isn't that factor. I always go back to Shaun Hill when looking at this, because he has about the same amount of years in the League as Smith has, is a bit older than Smith, and ran all the offenses Smith had with the exception of Smith not running Martz's in the regular season. Now it may seem I'm one of those Smith haters, but years back CalBear was just being an absolute tool about him, and I came into the thread to defend Smith. IIRC this was back in 2007. Since then Smith hasn't proven anything to me on why I defended him, and the reason why I hold Smith to a high standard is because the last good 49er QB was Garcia, who was an un-drafted player nobody wanted, and took over the job with *gasp* Stenstrom and Mirer on the squad. He was undoubtedly in a better situation than Smith, and if Smith can play as good as Garcia in this offense then great. But it still doesn't mean the 49ers hold pat on that position, because well, Garcia won the job over Stenstrom and Mirer, after passing up Jake Plummer for Jim Druckenmiller, and drafting Gio Carmazzi over Tom Brady.

That's how stupid the 49ers have been with that position.

As happy as I am that the Niners have a good coach and seem to be on the right track now, it just makes me more upset when I think about how they should have drafted Rodgers -- which I advocated for then as a USC fan who knew that Rodgers would be perfect for the WCO. Replace Smith with Rodgers and the Niners would be contending for the SB this season.

I'm even thinking you can replace Smith with Luck and they could contend next year.

That pick couldn't have gone more horrifically wrong for SF, but I truly don't think Rodgers would have developed into the QB he has become had he been in SF. Better than Alex Smith, undoubtedly, but situation is such an important factor.

TJ Houshmandzadeh working out for 9ers to fill the WR void left by Morgan's injury

http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2011/10/11/report-houshmandzadeh-to-audition-for-49ers/

T.J. Houshmandzadeh has 616 career receptions and 43 touchdowns.

Today, the 49ers will gauge whether the 34-year-old wide receiver has more productivity left in him.

In the wake of a potential season-ending injury to Joshua Morgan, the Niners will bring Houshmandzadeh in for a tryout. Houshmandzadeh’s agent, J.R. Rickert, said, via Twitter that his client was auditioning with San Francisco today. Houshmandzadeh, a 10-year veteran will join a group of 53-man-roster hopefuls that includes practice-squad players Joe Hastings and John Matthews.

Houshmandzadeh worked out for the Patriots in August, but was not offered a contract. He played in Baltimore last year for Jim Harbaugh’s brother, Ravens coach John Harbaugh, and had 30 catches for 398 yards and three touchdowns, snapping a streak of six consecutive 70-catch seasons.

From 2004-09, Houshmandzadeh averaged 87 catches and 996 yards and earned All-Pro honors after his 112-catch season in 2007.

After spending his first eight seasons with the Bengals, Houshmandzadeh signed a five-year, $40 million contract with Seattle in 2009. The Seahawks released him after his one season with the team (79 catches, 911 yards, 3 TDs).

I'd pass on House, he looked done last year. Maybe he got a nice recommendation from John Harbaugh.

I'm wondering how Jim Harbaugh didn't send an invite to the undrafted rookie WR from Stanford that is tearing it up in Seattle (Baldwin?). He'd sure look nice on the roster about now.

Where is Zeigler now? Everybody was high on him like they were on Thomas Clayton a few years back.
Veteran T.J. Houshmandzadeh is one of the players trying out today for the 49ers' vacancy at wide receiver, but former 49ers receiver Dominique Zeigler is not, according to multiple sources.
Zeigler, meanwhile, was coming off a torn ACL suffered last season and was not fully healthy when he resumed playing with the 49ers during the preseason. He had one catch for 10 yards in the exhibition season.

In the wake of a potential season-ending injury to Joshua Morgan, the Niners will bring Houshmandzadeh in for a tryout.
In and out like Culpepper, we'd get more production moving Delanie Walker out there.
I like this idea a lot. Walker would certainly create more mismatches than anyone that could be brought in. I had actually emailed Barrows a few weeks back asking why the 49ers weren't following the league trend & going more 2 TE sets. Walker would fit the receiving TE role perfectly.

49ers sign WR Brett Swain

The 49ers signed wide receiver Brett Swain, who the club determined had the most impressive tryout Tuesday at the team's practice facility in Santa Clara, a source said.

Swain, 26, played 16 games for the Green Bay Packers last year, and appeared in the Super Bowl. He joins center Jonathan Goodwin as the only 49ers with Super Bowl rings.

Swain (6-foot, 200 pounds) appeared in 16 games last season for the Packers, mostly as a special-teams player. He caught six passes for 72 yards. Swain entered the league as a seventh-round draft pick from San Diego State.

The 49ers have yet to announce the signing, as they determine how to clear room on their 53-man roster for Swain.

The 49ers were in the market for a wide receiver after Joshua Morgan sustained a potential season-ending leg injury Sunday in the team's 48-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Morgan underwent surgery on his broken right lower leg on Monday.

Swain had the best overall performance during a workout Tuesday that included veteran wide receivers T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Chris Chambers, and Brian Finneran, as well as practice-squad players Joe Hastings and John Matthews.

Um actually I would gladly welcome TO back, if not just to sign him so he can retire a niner. I don't know how much he'll demand or contribute, but I don't think there's much downside.
I have ABSOLUTELY no desire to see him "retire a Niner." He burned too many bridges in leaving the Niners to want to see him honored by the Niners in any way. Obviously, he'll be strongly associated with the Niners when he gets inducted into the HOF, but I'm fine with that just being the historical aspect only. I DO NOT want to see the organization re-embracing TO the person.

So what exactly was it that he did to make you feel this way? So he spoke his mind and the media gobbled it up. Some of what he said turned out to be true (see McNabb) and some questionable, but I don't think he ever did anything repulsive enough for me to not remember him as a 49er.

Pimping Tim Rattay over Garcia and generally dividing the locker room was more than speak his mind. But he was the last stud WR the 49ers have had. If the 49ers are in a position to make a late season push to propel them deeper in the playoffs, why not have TO?

I dont think Harbaugh would bring in a guy like TO. Several times this season Ive heard him and a few players mention having "humble hearts". Theres no place in Harbaugh's locker room for a mouthy, selfish diva like TO, no matter how good he is when on the field.

Been a long time since I've been this excited about the Niners. Reading stuff like this gives me hope. I dont care if it's KOOL AID, let me dream for a little bit! http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/niners-talk/post/Alex-Smith-shows-a-new-side-to-his-game?blockID=576726&feedID=5884

Alex Smith shows a new side to his gameOctober 13, 2011, 7:22 amMatt MaioccoIt's all starting to make sense now.On the day the 49ers selected Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2005 draft, his college coach, Urban Meyer, provided a prescient perspective of the young quarterback.Six-and-a-half years later, Meyer's words are worth revisiting."Alex is an extremely quick learner," Meyer began. "However, he's a guy that, until he understands it, he is nonfunctional. . . . Alex Smith is a person that, once he is taught, has to learn it all. He might struggle early, but once he gets it, he gets it."I'm going to be anxious to watch his development with the 49ers. Alex is so careful with the ball. His touchdown-to-interception ratio the last 2 years (at Utah) was phenomenal (47 touchdowns and seven interceptions). That's because, unless he knows exactly what's going on, he won't throw it. He won't just try to guess and take a shot. He has to know."Meyer concluded, "That's why, early in his career, and early in our career with him at Utah, he was not an effective passer, because he really didn't understand. Once he understood, there was no one better. He learns quickly, though. But he's not a guy that you throw the ball out there and tell him, 'Go play.' He wants to know what is exactly expected of him and then he becomes a dynamite player."* * *Alex Smith is coming off a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in which he completed 11 of 19 passes for 170 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. But the play that impressed me the most was an incomplete pass he threw in the second quarter. I've watched every snap of Smith's professional career. I've seen him in practice through the years. What I saw him do Sunday against the Buccaneers was something I'd never seen him do -- ever. With as many changes as Smith has endured in his seven-year career, it looks as if he is finally just going out and playing football. It was a first-and-10 at the Tampa Bay 45-yard line. Smith dropped into the pocket. He rolled to his left to buy a little extra time. Then, he did something that, seemed almost out of character. He signaled with his left hand to tight end Delanie Walker to abandon the script and go deep. In six seasons, I've witnessed a mostly robotic, paint-by-numbers quarterback. This is the first time I saw him improvise in such a way.The fact that the pass fell incomplete into the end zone was of little consequence. The play might have been symbolic of something greater."We were just playing football," Walker said. "That's something Alex hasn't ever done before. It kind of shocked me a little bit. I think that's why I misjudged the ball. He saw I had the dude beat and nobody was behind me. I came back and he was like, 'Go! Go deep.'"That was the first time doing it, so we weren't on the same page. Now, we're going to be on the same page. He wanted to put it on my outside shoulder to lead it away from the safety that was playing inside. It was basically playing street football."When I asked Smith about the play, he said he and the 49ers' offense are getting a lot more comfortable and confident."When you're comfortable with what you're doing, you're making good decisions and in your head the play slows down," Smith said. "So when a play breaks down, you stay under control."The epitome of that is when I watch Aaron (Rodgers) and the Packers. Everything is under control. All of a sudden, when it's not there, he remains so fluid and under control and there's never a breakdown or anxiety. He's so comfortable and they're so comfortable, and everything is under control, so they play faster because of it."I think there's a little of that with us. But I think we have a long way to go, and I have a long way to go."

One of the differences in Smith this season so far is that he has been good at taking sacks. The infamous "BOOO" game is a good example of Smith rolling to his left to escape the pressure (after stepping right into it), and then trying to make a play that ended in disaster.

All the Smith hype over 6 quarters is really drowning out the play of the defense too. They are the reason the 49ers have a shot at winning games. Carlos Rogers brought some savvy to a suspect defensive backfield, and is this years Walt Harris.

looks like the rook is #3 in sacks the past two weeks

Total sacks Week 4 and 5

Jared Allen - 4

Osi Umenyiora - 4

Aldon Smith - 3.5

Great job in both the draft and free agency.

Aldon Smith and Kendall Hunter are both going to be beasts.

There was a lot of head scratching when they took Smith instead of Robert Quinn, but each week Smith is looking more and more dominant.

To me, Hunter looks quicker than Gore (granted Gore has been hurt), but Hunter is going to be a flat out stud.

Navorro Bowman (3rd round from last year) is making everyone forget that Takeo hopped on board with Manusky for the ride down I-5.

Awesome pick ups in Rogers, Madieu and Whitner.

Braylon Edwards is exactly what they've been missing (a deep threat that isn't their tight end). Can't wait until he's healthy.

Obviously getting Akers was a major coup, as well as re-signing McDonald and Goldson.

Their best move though, may have been signing Goodwin.

He's exactly what that young group of 1st and 2nd round picks needed - a tough, proven vet to anchor them in the middle and show them the ropes.

I was hopeful last year that they might sign the recently released Kevin Mawae for that very purpose (although, no one picked him up, so maybe he was over-the-hill - although there were rumours that it was because of his role in the player's union as the impending strike loomed. . .)

I've always thought Alex Smith has had more potential than his record and that he has been dealt a bad hand with crappy coaching, mediocre receivers, and an infant o-line. I've watched him closely since he's been drafted and have seen the flashes that made everyone hopeful (especially during his 2nd year when he had his one decent OC - Norv Turner). Don't get me wrong, no one's going to mistake him for Rogers/Brady/Manning/Brees, but I could easily see him ending up top 10 in QB rating.

Only bummer obviously, is the Morgan injury. Too bad. Edwards/Crabtree/Morgan/Davis-Walker/Gore-Hunter make for a helluva skill-position group.

Should be a great game against DET on Sunday.

After watching the CHI/DET game, I think their best chance is to run Gore/Hunter as much as possible.

Forte looked decent when CHI ran the ball, and I don't think the O-line is quite ready to handle the DET pass rush.

Given that, I'm looking for Davis to have a HUGE game.

If the DET D has a weakness, it's at safety.

The wildcard is obviously Megatron.

Don't know if we have an answer for him.

Only if we can get a decent pass rush.

Maybe The Smiths (Aldon and Justin) can get enough of a rush on Stafford to throw off his timing.

Also think we'll need to win the turnovers to pull it off (but as has been stated, we're leading the league at +10, so why not? oh yeah, DET is tied for 2nd at +7)

What an ugly win. Alex Smith made some great throws but didn't play a great game. 16, 17 penalties? But it's another win!

5-1 for the first time since 1998!

Aldon Smith is already a big time difference maker. I guess this is another reason not to get worked up about the NFL draft immediately after the fact - the Rams would trade Quinn for him in a heartbeat.

What an ugly win. Alex Smith made some great throws but didn't play a great game. 16, 17 penalties? But it's another win!5-1 for the first time since 1998!:confetti:
I wouldn't say he made some great throws. He made some good throws but was off most of the day. Almost all his passes under 20yrds sailed on him. But it don't matter!! 49ers 5-1 baby!

Great win yesterday!! Too bad it's over shadowed by the coach fight. Regardless, feels great that Smith played meh, Niners had tons of penalties yet still found a way to win on the road. Defense and special teams!

Didn't realize the Niners have a brutal travel schedule until Peter King mentioned it on his Monday column.

Week 12 Thanksgiving at Baltimore.

Week 15 at home vs Pit on Monday night, then Saturday week 16 at Seattle (4 days rest).

Gonna be challenging.

I actually think the worst is behind them.Only 1 top tier team left (BAL) plus 3 more tough games (WAS, NYG, PIT).The others are (CLE, SEA, ARIx2, STLx2).11-5 is completely realisticand 12-4, (if not 13-3) is a real possibility.

Some fascinating information:

The Niners are the first team since 1921(!) to rush for a touchdown in each of their first games without allowing a rushing touchdown.

SF sent 4 or fewer pass rushers on all but one of Stafford's 57 dropbacks. For the season SF has sent fewer than 5 on 77.7% of opposing team dropbacks.

On a bye/improvement week, so not a whole lotta news, but heres a write-up with some cool info:

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/48975/49ers-aldon-smith-on-record-sack-pace

49ers' Aldon Smith on record sack pace

With 5.5 sacks for the season, all of them over the last three games, San Francisco 49ers rookie Aldon Smith is on pace to finish the regular season with 14.5.

That would tie the sack-era NFL rookie record Jevon Kearse set in 1999. Sacks became an official stat in 1982.

Mel Kiper Jr. expected Smith to make an immediate impact despite facing a transition to the 3-4 defense. Smith is doing more than making an impact. He's turning into a candidate for defensive rookie of the year.

The Washington Redskins' Ryan Kerrigan is another prominent candidate. He has two sacks, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one interception and a touchdown. Denver's Von Miller has five sacks and also could factor, although the Broncos reduced his role recently.

Smith ranks fifth in the NFL in sacks and first among rookies. He also has a safety.

Veteran Parys Haralson remained the 49ers' starting outside linebacker for San Francisco against Detroit in Week 6. But the Lions' pass-oriented offense led to more snaps for Smith and the 49ers' nickel defense. The same was true when San Francisco faced Philadelphia in Week 4.

The chart, provided by ESPN Stats & Information, shows game-by-game snap counts for the 49ers' linebackers this season. Smith played a season-high 62 snaps against the Lions.
