Bosox are a quality 9-24 (.273) since the trade with the Dodgers.Nice effort by Valentine, sitting Ellsbury and Pedroia for game one vs. the Yankees after playing them all weekend vs. Orioles. I swear it's like he's trying to screw the Orioles over as payback for last year

damnAccording to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Red Sox intend to fire Bobby Valentine when the season ends. The move will be made on either Thursday or Friday, says Heyman's source. Valentine failed miserably in his first season as Red Sox skipper, going 7-21 so far in September and 69-92 overall while regularly stirring up drama inside the Boston clubhouse. The Red Sox are thought to have their eyes on current Blue Jays manager John Farrell as a potential replacement.

Why even play? I suffered through numerous 70-92 seasons as a fan and I can never remember a team of mine laying down like this, including the 2003 Tigers who lost 119 games.Even the Astros laugh at thisPerhaps the most pathetic display of ineptitude and indifference I've seen in baseball.

They are definitely on the right path. Next step: jettison Valentine about 1.3 seconds after the last out in #162.
That reminds me of the current group of jerkoffs on this team who didn't attend his funeral. Big Papi, Buccholz, Salty, and Padilla were the only 4 players to show. Iirc Pedroia's wife had some health problems. But the rest of the clowns?YOu know it's been a rough year when the Red Sox Nation propgram sends out a form letter to members. Nothing says "sorry for the ####ty product this year" like a sticker and a Johnny Pesky baseball card.![]()
I think they basically need to give Ortiz whatever he asks for right now. Letting him get away would be a complete PR disaster.Just read that Papi wants 25-30 million on a two year deal and the Rex Sox are going to give it to him. This is very puzzling. Lets face it who exactly in the AL would sign Papi to that kind of deal at 37? None of the big spenders need him.
How much worse could it possibly be than what it is now?I think they basically need to give Ortiz whatever he asks for right now. I know what you're saying and I don't disagree with you altogether, but it would be a pretty devastating blow to a pretty sentimental fanbase.'scoobus said:How much worse could it possibly be than what it is now?'Borat said:I think they basically need to give Ortiz whatever he asks for right now. The new draft budgets make it hard to plow money into amateur free agents. The Sox can invest in international scouting and development but they're limited as to how much they can spend on signing. 16 & 17 year olds are a crapshoot with a long-term and uncertain payback. Boston can't turn themselves into Tampa Bay overnight. They're going to have to rebuild on the fly.Napoli fills a need and isn't a big overpay in years. Even if he collapses, it won't be as bad as Crawford, Lackey or MatsuzakaMike Napoli 3 years 39 million![]()

I don't know what to say. It seems like the Sox are gearing up for one last run, but they don't have enough talent for one last run. I liked the Johnny Gomes signing because he has good platoon splits, it is a 2 year deal, and he is a great clubhouse guy (it cannot be overstated how important that is for this team of whining babies). But Napoli? He has one career year, and is constantly hurt. I just don't understand it. The Sox should be sellers, not buyers. They simply do not have enough pitching. Not even close to enough pitching. Not happy right now.Take that money and spend it on the draft/international free agents. Trade Lester. Trade Ellsbury. Change the clubhouse culture. Give young talent the opportunity to play and identify long term answers.Napoli was a horrible signing for this team.
Rebuilding on the fly doesn't bother me. Heck, throwing large sums of money at a free agent doesn't bother me. However, I want those free agents to be young, and preferably durable. I agree, the length of Napoli's contract doesn't make me immediately want to jump off a cliff, but this team needs to go in another direction. Trade a guy like Ellsbury for prospects, rebuild the farm. So when Mike Stanton (for example) demands a trade from Miami, Boston will have the pieces to go and get him. THis team is not going to win anything as constructed. They need pitching. And lots of it. Starters and Relievers. The new draft budgets make it hard to plow money into amateur free agents. Good signing Imo. Guys got huge power and hes hit the cover off at fenway. We need that power in the middle of the lineup. 39 million is reasonable for a guy with his kind of power. 400 at bats hes knocking out 25-30 homeruns.Mike Napoli 3 years 39 million![]()

With the way management is going, I can see Ellsbury for Dickey. What is management going to do about the pitching situation. It was horrid last year.Sounds like Victorino signed for the same deal as Napoli . . . 3 years and $39 million. May be a precursor of an Ellsbury trade.
No way they trade Ellsbury for Dickey. That seems like an awful moveWith the way management is going, I can see Ellsbury for Dickey. What is management going to do about the pitching situation. Agreed. Even better, myopic Mets fans have been calling WFAN for a week begging for the Mets to trade Dickey for Wil Myers. Amazing what folks think teams will give up for a 38-year-old pitcher who was nine games under .500 for his career prior to 2012.No way they trade Ellsbury for Dickey. Interesting. I am assuming this is before the Phils traded for Revere.Makes sense to turn it down for Philadelphia, though. Lee's stats, except for wins, were fine, and they should be in contention for the wildcard.Reportedly offered Ellsbury to the Phillies for Cliff Lee and were rejected.
According to another major league source, the deal is for one year with Napoli getting a $5 million guarantee. The deal includes incentives that could increase the value of the contract back to roughly $13 million if Napoli does not spend any time on the disabled list due to a hip injury. The contract is strictly a one-year deal — it does not include any team, vesting or mutual options.
