***OFFICIAL 2012 MINNESOTA TWINS THREAD*** (1 Viewer)

MEDICAL

Joe Mauer was diagnosed with pneumonia on Sept. 16 and requires at least two weeks rest. He's likely out for the rest of the season,

—SS Tsuyoshi Nishioka (sore right oblique) did not play Sept. 6-8. He was back in the lineup Sept. 9, but he didn't play Sept. 10-14. He was shut down for the season on Sept. 16.

—1B Justin Morneau (mild concussion, left shoulder stiffness) did not play Aug. 29-Sept. 16. As of Sept. 16, he appeared finished for the season.

—LHP Francisco Liriano (left posterior shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 26. He did light throwing Sept. 5-6. He threw off a mound Sept. 11. He was activated from the disabled list Sept. 16 and will probably make a start on Sept. 24.

—OF/DH Jason Kubel (left foot injury) was pulled from Sept. 16's game. He will consult with team doctors and could be shut down for the season.

—CF Denard Span (migraine symptoms) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 14. He missed two months earlier this season because of a concussion. He resumed baseball activities Sept. 3 and took batting practice Sept. 7. As of Sept. 16, Span went through his third straight workout without experiencing the migraines that have sidelined him since mid-August. If the trend continues, he could be back in the lineup by Sept. 20.

—RHP Scott Baker (flexor strain in right arm) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 9. He began a throwing program by playing catch Aug. 23. He threw off a mound Sept. 11. There is a chance he could pitch some innings in relief before the end of the season.

—2B Alexi Casilla (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list July 28. He was activated Aug. 12 but then was placed back on DL Aug. 13 after aggravating the injury. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Fort Myers on Aug. 29, but he was re-injured in that game. He was running at Target Field in mid-September, and he hopes to be activated before the end of the season.

—RHP Nick Blackburn (right lateral forearm strain) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 22. An MRI revealed an entrapped nerve caused by inflammation. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Sept. 4, ending his season.

Emerging?The guy has a 306 OBP.

—1B Chris Parmelee is batting .413 with nine RBI and two homers since being called up from Class AA New Britain on Sept. 6, hitting safely in 11 of 13 games. But the Twins also want him to play proficient defense, especially with 1B Justin Morneau again sidelined due to a concussion and unsure about his status as a full-time position player. FUN FACT: Of all batters since 1920 with at least 230 plate appearances in a season, Drew Butera has the 3rd worst OBP and OPS+, and the 4th worst batting average.

FUN FACT #2: Of all batters this season with at least 100 plate appearances, the two lowest OPS's are by Butera and Rene Rivera.

1B Justin Morneau is suffering from his second debilitating concussion in the last 14 months, and his status for next season won't be known at least until February, when he reports to Fort Myers, Fla., for spring training. Asked if he worries whether Morneau, the 2006 AL MVP, will ever play first base again, manager Ron Gardenhire said, "I don't even go there. ... First, you have to get him to spring training. Then we have to see what's best for our ballclub and Morneau."

glad we only have one year left on the contract with Morneau

"I'm fortunate to be up here. I'm just trying to soak in all the information I've been getting from the coaches and players here. Everybody is so knowledgeable. I'm listening to what everybody has to say." — 1B Chris Parmelee, 23, who is batting .413 with nine RBIs and two homers in his first major league call-up.

Have to wonder if it's a career ender for Morneau. It's too bad.Mauer and Morneau if healthy are great centerpieces for that O. Now it looks like neither of them will be healthy.

 Mauer is healthy, he's just a #####.

Oof, you know it's been a bad year when your MVP and Leadership Award winner is in his walk year and your Most Valuable Pitcher won 4 and saved 2.

Let Cuddyer walk, sign Kubel and Nathan. Looks as if we will make a play for Clint Barmes. I wanna get Oswalt but don't think its realistic.

Free-agency: 5 Twins targets

Updated: November 1, 2011 - 7:26 AM

Minneapolis Star and Tribune

Five potential free-agent targets for the Twins:

Rod Barajas, C, Dodgers

• Joe Mauer needs a dependable backup. Barajas has averaged 106 games caught over the past four seasons.

Nick Punto, INF, Cardinals

• The failed Tsuyoshi Nishioka experiment could lead Twins to re-sign Punto, or a clone such as Detroit's Ramon Santiago.

Clint Barmes, SS, Astros

• His value comes from his defense, which the Twins really want, but it's a concern how little he hit in Houston.

Hisashi Iwakuma, RHP, Rakuten Golden Eagles

• He returned to Japan after Oakland failed to sign him last winter. The Twins made the second-highest bid.

Rich Harden, RHP, Athletics

• Constant injuries make him a low-risk, high-reward guy, and he has ties to the Minnesota area.

I would be all for signing Harden, he's shown in the past that he can pitch well. His past two seasons have been rather shaky and short due to injuries, but like the article says, he is a low risk high reward.

@1500ESPNJuddJudd ZulgadTwins announced today that Terry Ryan has assumed the role of interim General Manager, replacing Bill Smith effective immediately.http://twitter.com/#!/1500ESPNJudd/status/133646881900331011

Terry Ryan back as Twins GM, replaces Bill Smith on interim basis

USA TODAY

Former Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan is back at the helm of the team on an interim basis. Bill Smith was fired from the job on Tuesday.

Ryan stepped down in 2007 citing burnout. It was not an easy task keeping his small-market team in the postseason hunt. Ryan's Twins won four division titles in his final five full years. The 2011 team, however, lost 99 games, second-most in franchise history.

Injuries took a toll and trading away Johan Santana, Matt Garza, J.J. Hardy and Delmon young netted insufficient returns for Smith, whose teams had captured division crowns the previous two seasons.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported the following statement from Twins owner Jim Pohlad"

"No one in the Twins' organization wants to win any more than Bill. He is unquestionably loyal, committed and talented. The Twins goal is to get better in 2012 and beyond. Bill was equally motivated to achieve that goal but we differed in the scope and approach that was required. … We are fortunate and grateful for Terry Ryan's willingness to step in as interim general manager."

Ryan said he was "looking forward" to the challenges ahead, for 2012 and beyond.

"We have many assets in place including a strong front office, manager, coaching staff and returning core of players," Ryan said, also in a team-issued statement. "We have a lot of work to do in relation to development of our roster, but I'm optimistic in our collective abilities to ensure the future on-field success of this franchise."

Smith, 53, has been with the organization since 1986 and became GM in September, 2007, replacing Ryan, who had been Twins GM since 1994. Ryan remained with the team as a special adviser to Smith.

Looks like they went out and got 37 year old SS Jamey Carroll(38 by the time the season start in 2012)

This team hasn't done anything right at SS since Bartlett was traded

They overpaid but I like the fit. If Punto were still here, and he should be, this signing wouldn't have been necessary.

Well, Carroll, 37, hit .290 with a .359 on-base percentage in 146 games last season and .291 with a .379 on-base percentage in 133 games in 2010. Carroll's numbers from last season easily beat those put up by Twins shortstops. Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Trevor Plouffe, Matt Tolbert and Alexi Casilla combined to bat .238 with a .292 on-base percentage. What Carroll has been in recent years is durable, which the Twins need after using the disabled list 27 times last season. He started 57 games at second base, committing five errors, and 54 at short, committing four errors, last season. He mostly played at second after the Dodgers called up shortstop prospect Dee Gordon. For his career, Carroll has made 430 starts at second, 164 at short. He looks better then anything the Twins currently have

Defensive wise he is terrible and only going to get worse. There’s no reason to believe that Carroll can play short adequately on an everyday basis. His Total Zone Fielding Runs or Defensive Runs Saved marks this year were terrible.Even if Carroll’s record as a shortstop wasn’t terrible, that’s without getting into the number of shortstops playing the position effectively into their late 30s. Carroll will be 38 by next season, and only 25 teams have ever played a shortstop that old or older; of them, only one, the 1984 Cubs with Larry Bowa, ever made the postseason. Yes the Yankees will try this year with Jeter but Carrol and Jeter will never be mistaken for each other.

Hard for me to get excited with our GM. I like Terry Ryan, and compared to Bill Smith he's great, but he had some input on many of the moves the Twins and Smith had made that led to the Smith firing, and now he signs Jamey Carroll? hmm..

Ryan was still an advisor to Smith. I would bet that he signed off on every move Smith botched. I see no difference between Smith and Ryan. We'll get more of the conservative, small ball s$$t we've had for 15+ years. They'll find a way to make the new park play even larger with punch and judy slap nut hitters like Carroll......my god, its going to be as boring as neutral zone trap hockey. F&$k.

YepThis team would win the (weak) Central division, people would think Gardy was a genius, and then playoff time? Out in the first, sometimes to a wild card.Gardenhire is 6-21 overall in the playoffs, and in divisional series over the last four years he is 0-12Do I blame Gardy because Minnesota will not get a stud who isn't 35+ years old? NoWill I give him credit as a Great manager? No

I give Gardy credit for not just keeping them together in 2010 when Morneau went down but somehow guiding that team to 94 wins. That was not a 94 win roster. But otherwise, I dont get the loyalty to him. He's chased off some damn nice players, his "Twins way" gets exposed everytime they make the playoffs and at least once a week he's willing to start his entire bench to rest studs and of course they get decimated on those days. Time to move on.

Plus...until this year he had no clue about using starting pitchers. I swear that Gardy felt if a pitcher reached 100 pitches, his arm would explode. Early in the season when Matt Crapps came in a blew saves on a regular basis, he finally got smart and thought maybe letting a pitcher throw 110-120 pitches wouldn't hurt.

And yet another missed opportunity.....Nathan signs for $14 mil over two years. The Twins had hoped for a hometown discount. Once again they a) misjudged the market and b) very likely could have moved Nathan at the trade deadline and gotten something. Really, really wish there were good baseball people running this show.

Nathan wouldn't waive his no trade clause at the deadline last year. The Twins have other priorities now than paying for a 37 year old closer. Unfortunately, I don't believe Nathan's past two years will even warrant the Twins a sandwich pick as compensation.

Kinda like the Doumit signing. :coffee:
I'm not too excited about this. He's terrible defensively at catcher. We'll need him at 1B/OF if Cuddyer leaves but I think we could have done better than an injury prone, 30 year old defensive liability, that doesn't walk much.

The Twins signed Doumit, 30,free agent from the pittsburg he has played 611 major league games, 413 as a catcher. He was limited to 77 games by a sprained left ankle last season but hit .303 with 12 doubles, eight homers and 30 RBI. One year for 3m seems ok, let him catch and Joe play first, and Justin recover for his injuries

The Twins offered arbitration to free agent OFs Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel, and the team could receive as many as four compensatory picks if its three remaining unrestricted free agents sign elsewhere.

At least we get some picks.

Looks like the Twins will walk away from the winter meetings with a Rockies cast off and a rule 5 draft pick. Boy, sure glad Terry Ryan got things back on track.

This team will be the worst in the Central next year.

They are not going to get better any time soon.

Oh wait a second...they are talking to two star pitchers from Japan!

After the success of the Sosucky Ishyoka experiment...print up those playoff tickets now!

Twins nearing deal with Willingham; Cuddyer out?

Comments By Scott Boeck, USA TODAY Updated 1h 24m ago Minnesota is close to signing free agent outfielder Josh Willingham, which could rule out the chances of re-signing longtime Twins player Michael Cuddyer.

Josh Willingham, 32, is a career .262 hitter with 132 home runs. CAPTIONBy Kelvin Kuo, US Presswire

Willingham was in Minnesota for a physical and is expected to sign a three-year, $21 million deal this week, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan has denied the report.

"I don't have a deal with anybody, so I guess I've got an open door," Ryan said. "I'm still looking for a corner outfielder."

The Twins are looking to boost their offense. They finished next to last in the American League in runs scored.

Willingham, 32, is a career .262 hitter with 132 home runs. He spent the 2011 season with the Oakland Athletics where he hit .246 with 29 home runs and 98 RBI.

Like the deal, let the tigers or sox overpay for cuddy
