I know the Sabres are bad, but that's by design. Flames actually look better than expected most nights too.
When I watch the Oilers though, I'm usually just disgusted by what I see. All that talent and they just seem lost most nights.
Oilers are a more talented team than the Flames, but Calgary has more heart and is a harder working team.Hall looked absolutely lost on Calgary's first goal. How hard is it to take the only opposing player in your zone out of the play?
I've said it many times the past three years, I was just waiting and really excited about the Oilers talent and what seemed like a certain rise to excellence. I thought they needed to add a few veteran players to the mix, now I have no idea what is wrong with them. They need to break it up a little after this year, get some different pieces and try to salvage all these high picks that individually look great at times, but rarely ever look good as a whole. Must be painful to be a fan right now. The down years with all the picks and youth coming in can actually be fun, what we see night to night right now certainly is not.
I think the problem is very clear. they have not drafted very well outside of the early 1st round picks. if you look at their draft history over the past 5+ years, it's a mess outside of early round 1 picks. just a wasteland.maybe it's a development issue too. not sure. but you need to fill in defense, goalie, and a bottom 6 around their stud skill players and they haven't done that very well at all.
Yeah, depth is huge in an organization. The Wings are good at developing elite prospects (Z, Datsyuk, Federov, Lidstrom, etc) but they have made their bones with the help of depth guys like Draper, Holmstrom, Franzen, Maltby, Ericsson and Ward. They now have guys like Sheahan, Abdelkader, Glendening and Andersson. Not exciting names but they are all solid contributors who can be long-term 3rd and 4th round guys that play on a nightly basis. Hit with your elite guys like Tatar and Nyquist and sprinkle in these depth guys, and you can maintain some excellence long-term.
