***Official 2013/2014 NHL Regular Season Thread*** (1 Viewer)

still the one team I think the Wild have little shot against in a 7 game series and match up horribly with, but it was very encouraging to see them actually take the play to STL for much of last nights game. thought the Wild had the better scoring chances and controlled play for most of the 1st and all of the 2nd. Elliott with some big stops including a desperation paddle save with an open net on Granlund. top two lines really clicking, Moulson looking like a good fit early on. Coyle with a pretty rough game and his bonehead decision and turnover led to the 2nd goal. really hope Yeo keeps Prosser in the lineup over Ballard for good now.

I wish the Blues had only one team that they had matchup problems with. They're 1-8 against the state of California this year.

As for last night, Wild looked good and I thought the Blues kinda sleepwalked through the 2nd period. Don't know if it was because of a back to back game or what.

True, but they'll likely play within their division in the first two rounds (no matter if they finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd), so they likely won't play LA, SJ or Anaheim until the conference finals (if they get that far).

Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench and they took him to the locker room. Players all left the ice. Nobody knows what's up.

:(

I was wondering what the delay was about.

ETA: You could hear a pin drop in the building.

He has Atrial fibrillation they are saying.
Yep
From September:

Rich Peverley, one of the Stars' new centermen acquired this offseason, is going to miss the rest of training camp and perhaps the beginning of the season. Thankfully, that's all he'll miss.

The Stars announced on Friday that Peverley is going to be out for three weeks after having a procedur to fix an irregular heartbeat. The issue was discovered in the pre-camp physical he took on Wednesday and has since been taken care of.

"We sent him to a specialist and it ended up he had an A-fib condition [atrial fibrillation], which is where the heart gets out of rhythm," Stars GM Jim Nill said. "He had a procedure done. He's going to be out for three weeks and should be available close to the start of the season, might miss one or two games."

Background

Rich Peverley missed the entire preseason and the first game of the season with an irregular heartbeat, and that same issue kept him out of Tuesday’s game in Columbus. Peverley was feeling strange after Monday’s game and was unable to fly.

He missed that game, but was back in the lineup Thursday and played on the top line with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn.

“It was the same thing,” Ruff said. “He’s been monitoring it the whole year and this might have been the first or second time it’s come around, but it’s something he has to deal with and it’s something that obviously we’re aware of.”
Yeah, he needs to stop playing hockey.

If you have the NHL GameCenter, you can watch it again from the start. Peverely takes his normal shift and skates off at the 14:10 mark. About 30 seconds later, all hell breaks loose and the Dallas bench is going nuts. They finally get a whistle and Peverely is whisked back to the room in record time. Looks like the medical staff did a fantastic job. Pretty chilling watching that when you know what's coming.

I was watching live and had no clue wtf was going on. Announcers weren't much help either. Lots of dead air for awhile while everyone tried to figure out what happened.

NHL's statement:

Dallas player Rich Peverely is doing well and is in stable condition. He has been transported to the hospital. As a result of the emotional state of the players on both teams caused by the medical emergency, the game is being postponed. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank the fans.

Pretty ####ty effort by these thunde#### Ducks. :topcat:
Great effort just a hot goalie.Eta

You have to remember this is Toronto. They'd head through the top 5 in the west and take 5 wins and then lose 7 straight to the worst in the east.

Proposed rule changes

A quartet of concepts came out of Day 1 of the GM meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., but none of them gained much traction. That’s too bad, because three of the four were solid ideas…

EXTENDING OVERTIME AND GOING 3-ON-3 FOR SOME OF IT
THUMBS UP
I do like the shootout – it’d actually be better if it featured five shooters per team, but it’s become far too commonplace. As calculated by The Canadian Press, 14 percent of games are now going to the skills competition and 40 percent of games that go past regulation aren’t resolved in the 4-on-4 session. That’s far too many. Anything that can be done to curb the number of shootouts, including the suggestion of doing a dry scrape before OT to improve the ice conditions or switching ends to create a long change during the extra session would be a good move.

EXPANDING VIDEO REVIEW/COACH’S CHALLENGE
THUMBS DOWN
There are enough delays as is with the league reviewing each goal. We don’t need further stoppages breaking up the flow of the game. The idea of a “challenge flag,” while dramatic, would cause more problems than it would solve. Would you throw it while the play is going on? Wait until the next whistle? What if 10 minutes have come off the clock? Do we roll it back? And how many problems are there really? The occasional missed offside or icing? There’s not a big enough problem here to justify a drastic and invasive change. This is using a nuke to flatten a mosquito.

FURTHER PROTECTION FOR THE GOALIES
THUMBS UP
While there’s no epidemic of goalie injuries as there were with quarterbacks in the NFL before that league instituted extreme measures to protect them, it’s still in the best interest of all involved to protect the masked men. Any contact with a keeper in the crease should be a penalty. In turn, goalies shouldn’t be allowed to roam whatsoever to play the puck, which would render the trapezoid unnecessary. And that would a good thing.

CHANGING THE DEFINITION OF A KICKED-IN GOAL
THUMBS UP
This one is long overdue. I appreciate the need for player safety and the last thing you want is guys with sharp blades strapped to their feet kicking away at pucks while opposition skaters and goalies sprawl along the ice, but watching goals get waved off from a slight readjustment of the boot to deflect the puck in is beyond frustrating. Allowing “skate deflection” goals would be an easy way to increase scoring, which is something we can all get behind.

Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be any talk of getting rid of the “loser point,” which is by far the biggest blight on the game. One can only hope the league’s decision-makers will come to their senses on that sooner than later.
agree with almost all of this.

EDIT: to be clear, I don't care much about the goalie stuff and don't think more replay is needed. they need to:

(a) extend OT and/or the shootout, and I'd be fine with some 3v3 time.

(b) change stupid kicking motion rule to allow deflections off skates

© change points system to award 3pts for regulation wins and 2pts for OT wins to stop making some games worth more than others.

(d) figure out a better way to determine if the puck crossed the goal line.

Regarding the goalie protection, I hate seeing a penalty on a forward when he is trying to score on a fast break and the defenseman is all over him and checks him enough to where the forward inadvertently makes contact with the goalie as he gets to the crease trying to score.

Also, I really hate seeing penalties called on goalie interference when the goalie is out of the crease. Once the goalie leaves the crease, that protection should no longer apply. They don't like it, they can stay in the damn crease.

Goalie is not playing the puck -so even out of the crease if contact is made it's interference.

See, that's what I don't like. Say a forward is trying to get position in front of the crease, the goalie drifts out of the crease, and contact is made, resulting in a penalty on the forward? That is bull ####.

 If the opposing player's skates are outside the blue, then any contact with the goalie should be deemed incidental. Don't understand why this isn't enforced now.

I'd be fine with keeping players out of the crease, but a lot of times what happens is the defender rides or checks the offensive player right into his own goalie. Sucks when they get a PP out of that.

 Drives me insane. The ref be able to tell if what intentional on the part of the offensive player or as a result of the defender. At minimum no penalty and if the defender wants to risk his goalie and a goal, that's his problem, could/should even an interference call on the defender.

@darrendreger: Mathieu Schneider says players would like to see more interference allowed to slow game down. Removal of trapezoid to relieve pressure on D-men...

12:49pm - 11 Mar 14

Sure, just what we need, more interference. Hockey players are tough, but not the brightest bulbs.

Maybe they are talking about being able to ride guys into the boards. I think they have to do something with the boarding call b/c now offensive guys are putting themselves in vulnerable positions.
