****Official 2014 Chicago Bears Thread **** (2 Viewers)

Brock Vereen, good bloodlines at least. Any Gopher fans?
Solid but unspectacular. I think he'll be a contributor. He was a regular on local sports talk radio and comes across as an extremely impressive young man, so I view his bust rate as pretty low.

You get the sense that all of these Bears picks actually have a passion to play the game. You have to like that. Perhaps those are lessons learned from prior Bears drafts.

Very Happy with this draft so far. I've liked Carey for a long time and think he can do all the things Forte can do.

Throw Kyle Long a bone and get Colt Lyerla.

I'm still waiting for my *ahem* 3rd round safety Loston to go. This is why I don't pretend to be a scout or gm

My vote for tomorrow - another DB (most likely someone who can play CB and S); back up RB; an OL (most likely an interior guy who can be groomed as a C for life after Garza) and a QB project.
Nailed it!

DB - Vereen (can play S and CB)

Back up RB - Carey

OL - Leno

QB - Fales

I missed the punter but that was because we added an extra pick this year that we did not have! :P

All of the O taken left a ton of value for the Bears on D.

I don't get the hate for Ego. He was a top 10 DT in most rankings. Except for Nix, he was the top DT left on Mayock's board when the Bears picked. 5 DTs taken and the Bears got 2 of them. They don't have to follow the media's draft rankings. They took the best DTs that would fit their scheme at a position we needed badly. I don't see the problem. There was nothing left at safety and we needed more guys in the trenches. DT was the best value left for what we needed.
Here is my problem with drafting Ego where they did. Kiper has Ego as his 21st DT. There are 12 DTs that Kiper had ranked higher than Ego still on the board after the third round was complete. There was exactly one DT taken between the Bears pick of Ego and Sutton. McShay had a fourth round grade on both Sutton and Ego.

However, Ourlads has Ego ranked 4th and Sutton ranked 5th at DT. Both above Dominique Easley, who the Patriots took at the end of the first. My guess is that you could have easliy traded down, and gotten another late pick, and still gotten Ego if you were set on him. I just think that you could have easily gotten Ego in the third, and I liked Nix better than either of them.
You cannot think like that when you really need that player and we needed a stud who can shut the run down in the trenches. We were last in run D last year....freaking last. We have Adrian Peterson and now Eddie Lacy and Reggie Bush to deal with twice every year .... how do you know for sure someone would not take Ego between our pick and where we traded down to? As Emery said, you cannot run on this guy, as the tape showed and he went up against the SEC competition (think Tre Mason). Have you seen the crazy players the Seahawks pick every year in the draft (including this year)? How do you know someone would not "reach" for Ego too? I am glad our GM goes off his board and not Mel ####ing Kiper's

I think taking a chance on missing our guy for a 5th round pick is a small complaint. They felt it was more important to get their guy than a possible extra 5th if there was even someone wanting to offer that. A lot of teams passed on Nix as well so I'm not that bothered by that either.
You may be right, a 5th doesn't seem like much. I don't think Ego was their target. I think they were hoping Jernigan would drop. When he didn't drop I think they panicked a little. If this was their guy then you may not want to wait. On the other hand the best teams squeeze every thing out of the draft that they can. It always seems like the Patriots have a handful of picks because they regularly trade down and accumulate more picks.
Is this the same Pats team you are talking about that traded down and gave Clay Matthews on a platter to the fudge packers?

I said months ago the Bears were looking deeply at David Fales. I think this is the steal of the draft here. He's only got to beat out the very pedestrian Jordan Palmer for the backup job and he's got the hair trigger release that Trestman likes.

Given that Cutler can get gimpy at times during the season, I think Fales can really lay the hurt on some teams this year if given a chance. And just in terms of situation/opportunity, I don't think Fales could have landed into a better place ( right to a known QB whisperer, on a team that just lost it's much beloved backup QB, and with some major weapons at receiver)

For all this other faults, Trestman puts his QB1 prospects in a position to succeed.
I'll admit that I've never heard of the kid before a week ago. But I love everything I read about him. He LOVES the game and has some major upside. Can't help to think that Trestman saw something in him worth taking a shot on. Its a promising feeling to think we have a backup QB that could be a gamer. Bears fans haven't had that in a minute.

Reading some interesting takes on Jordan Lynch... Basically if he can't hack it at QB, the guy might have the skills to make it as a Safety in the NFL. A safety named Lynch just sounds promising....

DAY 3 RECAP:

Ka'deem Carey (rb)- This kid can play football. Can't point out one thing he amazes people at, but he is definitely a "forte-lite". Heck, he might be as good as Forte...

Brock Vereen (s)- was all Big Ten first team, but wasn't a game changer. Sounds like this kid loves the game, and puts his heart and soul on the line every play. I like the pick.

David Foles (qb)- For a QB drafted in rd 6 paired with Trestman, you couldn't ask for more upside. Was as high as the #5 overall QB on some boards. Love this pick.

Pat O'Donnell (p)- Might have been early, but hes the best punter in the draft and has the ability to kickoff, and hold for FG/PTA. Worth the risk/reward at that point.

Charles Leno (ot)- Started 24 collage games at LT. Pure depth pick, but cant hurt.

notable FA signings: Jordan Lynch (qb) and Christian Jones (olb)... both players have the potential to be solid contributors.

Like the optimism. I was coming in to post what a bad feeling I have about the QB depth. Hope you're on with this guy.

Only time will tell with the draft. I was surprised with a couple of the picks, but can't say they were bad.

Overall, it seems like the team really tried to address a few areas of big need. I feel good about that.

The Pats certainly make mistakes, but they have been consistently a playoff team for a long time. They are doing something right when it comes to personnel. They seem to manipulate the draft very effectively. They always seem to have extra picks. They take some risks on players. When you take chances sometimes you strike out, but sometimes you score big.

FB/HB who can throw.
Thought you were joking with this, but Bears are listing Jordan as a RB signing

Really like what Emery did with the draft. Fuller was a "safe" first rounder IMO. Not flashy but fits the system.

I love the DT picks. I would have loved to of seen Nix instead of Ego but Ego fits the run stuffer NT mold and the Sutton pick is tremendous value. If you can keep his weight down in the 285-290 area like it was in 2012 you basically got an Aaron Donald-ish 3T in the 3rd round.

Carey was the only pick I didn't like. I would have much rather taken Seastrunk.

Fales, along with Sutton, was my favorite pick. Doesn't test well at the combine drills and doesn't have the "wow" arm but has a quick release, reads the field well, is deadly accurate on the Trestman route tree throws and just screams about being a guy that is the perfect fit for the Bears system.

I'm checking in here pretty happy with the overall draft also. I was pretty critical of a reach on Ferguson pick as being a reach for a project player, but really taken as a whole I'm pretty happy with the moves they made. If we can see a decent portion of this class contribute it will be great. Hopefully they preform well and the late round picks give some of the mediocre vets good competition in camp and beat out a few.

The Punter sounds like an athlete too. 23 reps on the bench press and 4.6 forty. He does kickoffs too
Our punter bench pressed more than freaking Clowney at the combine!
Super Bowl!
The bears new punter Did 23 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press at the NFL Scouting Combine -- more than six tight ends, 19 running backs, 21 defensive linemen and all 37 wide receivers.

Double Super Bowl!
