Clausen 1-9 in 10 starts. Threw 3 TDs/9 INTs, for league-worst Total QBR of 11.0

Total QBR lowest in of 9 seasons stat has been tracked.
What was McCowns record coming into last year?
He was a teacher and pretty much outperformed Cutler. I'm all in on starting anyone not named Cutler.
You think Clausen gives the team a better chance to win than Cutler?
Probably not but I think in a town that always roots for the backup qb, many will. I think it is important to see how Clausen operates the offense as it is meant to be implemented instead of the numerous reports about Jay operating his version of it. So in that regard I think we may find some answers.
There are no answers to be found. It really doesn't matter if Clausen operates the offense better. Clausen is not your answer at QB. This simply assures that Trestman, Emery, and most of the staff will be fired. This does mean that it is more likely that Cutler will be gone, either traded or cut. We will see how happy Bear fans are watching Mark Sanchez under center next year.
For Trestman it will mean that he can show his system works and he was jobbed by Cutler - for future job interviews. He's likely gone from the Bears either way

What's the vibe around town? I'm not anywhere near Chicago.
I could only stomach about 10 minutes of talk radio today but they were talking about conflicting reports that Trestman made this decision without consenting with Emery so he can showcase he can show Cutler was the problem and that another team should hire him as their offensive coordinator. The other thing they were talking about was what people have written that they don't want Jay to get injured because they will owe him money. Some of the players are supposedly upset with the handling of Cutler and that Kromer got off too easy.

A couple questions for Bears fans:

With Clausen starting has your desire to watch the 2 remaining games increased or decreased?

Increased

Do you think the Bears have a better, same, or worse chance to win their remaining games?

Same
I'd watch no matter what but I'm definitely excited to see what Clausen does and if it even impacts he rest of the team.

Same. They weren't winning this game no matter who is under center.

Cutler has handled this like a champ. Trestman looks like a scoundrel. Press conference was pathetic
Hhhhmmmmmm looks like the part in the drama where ownership is aligning their scapegoat. Looking more and more like Jay Boy. What a shame and who would have thought that Cutler would once again miss out on starting a full season. This is clearly the most frustrating season since the 84 team when they were humbled by the 49ers. Oddly that frustration came from being so close whereas this team just underachieved and failed on so many levels. To blame this on Cutler alone is reckless and misguided. He may be a malcontent but this stench carries straight to the e-suite. These barons are going to trick and fool the fan base into thinking that a change at QB and with the head coach is a change in the right direction. Bull Feathers!! This is Chicago politics. This ownership is a den of vipers. They will come out as clean as a crystal and the sell outs and viewership numbers will soar in 2015 after the brain trust makes the adjustments. Cutler? I wish it worked out better. It has been painful. He is a hard man to embrace but I have to think that he has a family and a lot of pressure. Did this offense quit on him or Trestman? Maybe they quit on the GM? Maybe fed up with ownership? i have always felt that Cutler would keep maturing but that frown will probably melt when a championship comes along. Maybe with another team...

I would like to thank Emery, Trestman, Cutler and Jerry Angelo for destroying the Bears organization. The only thing that keeps the Bears from being the worst organization in the NFL at this point is the Redskins. I expect that the Bears will be last in their division for the next three or four years. The best head coaching candidates aren't going to be interested in coming to this train wreck. They won't get top notch assistants or the top level GM options. The Bears are the new Raiders. I wish I had season tickets so I could cancel them. This is going to be ugly for a long time to come.

I hope you enjoy Jimmy Clausen at QB because that is the level of QB play we will be watching for the next few years. If you think Cutler was bad, buckle up. Sit back see if you can remember Kordell Stewart in a Bears uniform, or Rex Grossman. That is what is coming. By the time the Bears have a decent QB Marshall will be gone, Forte will be gone. The fact is that the Bears went through about 30 starting QBs between McMahon and Cutler. The carousel of crappy quarterbacks is back in town. Ten years from now the Bears may still be searching for a QB.

Yeah because we all know that 32 is over the hill and when he started his tenure w the Bears he was even younger which was the point of my statement. Let me frame the logic so you can understand it better - perhaps if he showed more maturity in his tenure with the Bear's and what I mean by maturity is his demeanor in addition to his play. Not a hard concept to understand.

You got something logical or are you gonna come up here with yer little shin kicks and hair pulls? I would like to understand what your position of ridiculous is if you can present one. The meatball packer fan has surfaced hanging around a bear's message board trolling. What a life you lead

Yeah the meatball packer fan confirmed trolling around. Well junior a win from the Lions is imminent so your team will have to earn a division title. What a loser

God he was awful. Chad Hutchinson or Peter Tom Willis those were jewels. How about Rick Mirer? He was a winner. And if I remember the Bears gave up a first round pick for Rick Mirer. Ouch!

http://m.chicagofootball.com/2014/12/18/hub-arkush-is-chicago-bears-qb-jay-cutler-the-culprit-or-victim/az9cig4/

I began covering the NFL in 1977 and started to focus on the Bears in 1979. Over those 38 seasons, Ive seen some inept football operations, teams that made dysfunction a way of life.

I just dont have the time right now to do the research to crown the 2014 Bears as the kings of the clowns, but there is absolutely no question they are among the top four or five finalists.

Thursday was the last straw. Marc Trestman and Phil Emery have found a way to make Jay Cutler a sympathetic character.

While Emery stayed somewhere under deep cover again, Trestman faced the media and came off as some delusional commander who actually is the only one in town who doesnt know the war is lost and he will be the first and most deeply wounded casualty.

Cutler, on the other hand, took to the dais for a press conference he didnt have to hold and absolutely knocked it out of the park in the role of mature, responsible, accountable and remorseful adult and great teammate standing up for himself and his guys.

He was strong, he was brave, he was funny, he was contrite, he was approachable, he was accountable and, at times, he was sympathetic taking his lashing and speaking well of the folks who threw him under the bus.

Unfortunately, it was all the things hes failed to be until just the past few weeks of his six seasons in Chicago.

Asked if he thought his benching was fair, Cutler responded, Theres a lot in that question. I havent really thought about it that deeply. All I know is theres a lot of money involved in my contract, which comes with a lot of expectations and a lot of responsibility. And whenever youre not winning and performing the way you should, theres a likelihood that could happen.

Asked if he still wanted to play for the Chicago Bears, Cutler said, I would like to stay here. I really like it here. I love the guys in the locker room that I get to play with. Clearly, its a different circumstance now. But going forward, this is where Id like to be.

Given the chance to go after the guy who just benched him, he said Yeah. Theres a lot that goes into football games offensively, defensively, special-teams-wise. Marcs still a heck of a football coach. Hes a heck of an offensive coach. Hes a heck of a quarterbacks coach. I still truly believe that.

Lets forget for just a moment that there is absolutely nothing for anybody involved in this circus to gain from Cutlers benching and lets just look for a moment at the Bears now second string, $100 million quarterback.

I understand a large segment of Bears fans have grown weary of Cutler, some disgusted and many even angry that he has failed to be the player you hoped and were led to believe he would be. He deserves that.

And for too long, he failed to vaguely resemble the class act he was in his humble pie press conference.

Emery brought Trestman here to be DaVinci to Cutlers Mona Lisa, but you were all sold a bill of goods.

Over 20 years, Trestman spent 17 seasons with eight different teams, three times lasting just one year, four times two years and only twice making it through a third season.

Why?

Today ,Trestman presides over one of the worst teams, dysfunctional locker rooms and inept offenses in the league, and yet everyone continues to insist on ignoring the fact he took over a 10-6 football team less than two years ago.

I get all the issues Cutler has had with almost all of his coaches in the past and no one is suggesting amnesty.

But if you put all your bias aside and think about it, as bad a job as Emery and Trestman have done, isnt it just possible that Cutler is as much a victim this time as he is the cause?

Cutler may never be the quarterback we think he can be, but Trestman was never the guy to make it happen either.

so, trestman breaks the news to the qb's first, then pouty cutler+n handles it in a professional manner by immediately texting schefter, who breaks the story on twitter, but cutler's a victim and trestman's an idiot.

ok

I sincerely hope they keep cutty because bears fans truly deserve him.

plus, it'd make next year a lot more entertaining for me.

Let it go dude...

If Cutler goes does Marshall go too? He came here to play with Cutler. I doubt he wants to be part of a rebuilding project at this stage of his career. Perhaps New England would be a good landing place for him. Maybe you get a third for him and clear some more cap space. Although I don't know what you use the cap space for, maybe a younger receiver, or working on the offense line. A solid running game would help whatever crappy quarterback they bring in.

He came here because he was traded for.

Marshall just resigned this year. And I dont think the Bears need to go with a total rebuild. They have quality players in the right spots. The Defense needs help, OL could use a slight upgrade. But you put a decent QB back there with some better coaching and playcalling... Thats a playoff team in 2015....

Starting a qb who hasn't played a game in 4 years only has really only played one season in the league, against maybe the top defense in the league on 2 days of preparation. Showing more and more how much of an idiot you are, Trestman.

I have to watch the Skins game with a Skins fan today. Makes me feel slightly better about the Bears...

I've moved into my fantasy offseason at this point. Trade Cutler, Pickup Mike Lupati, draft Landon Collins... Its a start.

F it... I'd take a guy like Hoyer at this point...

I felt the opposite way about the bears vs redskins. I felt like we are in similar positions, major team and mgmt issues with a playoff contending division rival coming to town. The redskins showed up to play and had a pretty impressive win. Eagles are a good team.Question is if the bears will do the same. Will they show up to play today, or have another 40+ point blowout. Personally I'm leaning towards blowout, but i still showed up to the bar in my bears shirt to hope for something more.

If Rex Ryan were to be fired in NY, would you want him in Chicago?
I actually asked the same a month or so ago. My answer was hell no for a head coach, that jets team is a mess. However, if we can get a good head coach, I would love to bring him in as a DC.

Which QB (realistically) would you guys be willing to trade for? Bradford? Foles/Sanchez? RGIII?
Foles - no would be too costly, we need our picks.RGIII - no, don't trust he can read d and be effective long term.

Bradford - think he'd just be available, but I'd take a late round chance on him if his knee looked ok.

Sanchez - eh, maybe a 6 or 7. Like how he has rebounded this year in a good situation.

Bradford has a big contract. He was drafted in the last year before the rookie salary cap.

Sanchez is a a free agent.

Ryan Mallet is a free agent.

Jake Locker is a free agent.

RG3 might be cut. He could be had for very little, I believe.

I would look at Mallet, Sanchez, Locker or RG3. I wouldn't mind working a trade with the Redskins trading Cutler for RG3. The Redskins might be stupid enough to bite on Cutler. RG3 is still young and you might be able to work with him. Regardless, you get out of your contract with Cutler.

Well at least we won't have to see Shea again after this year. It's fitting the GM will be showed out along with his first first round pick. Sucks

Shea will be back next year. He is still under contract, the fourth year of his rookie contract. His salary will only be about $2.6 million. He actually played better as the year progressed. He was ranked at 20 out of 39 at 4-3 OLB by PFF.

We couldn't be any further apart there. Shea looked terrible all year and showed very little progression imo. Won't start on an NFL team again after this year. He gone
