McCarthy's starts:

@Cleveland (average. high WHIP, low K/9, K%, xFIP not great, high BABIP, only 1 ER, should have got the W)

Cincinnati (solid start but faced the worst hitting team in baseball since the ASB)

Texas (solid start but faced the worst team in baseball)

@Texas (bad. high WHIP, ERA, low K/9, K%, xFIP poor, high BABIP. still worst team in baseball)

Detroit (seemed like a solid start, but Detroit is having a horrible overall series. Takes a lot away from how good McCarthy's start appeared)

You originally said it looked like a genius trade and my rebuttal was he really hasn't had a great performance against a top tier team yet as a Yankee. And it still looks that way. His two road starts are poor, CIN & TEX are two road teams any pitcher would like to face, and Detroit is in the middle of a disgusting slump.

Cleveland is very heavy in the left handed hitters dept. Their season stats as L are .263/.336/.414 and third in OPS at .750.

Dickerson, Brantley, Murphy, Ramirez (both), Kipnis, Chisenhall, and Santana (both) all can bat left. Not only that, he goes up against Kluber. Let's really see how valuable McCarthy is as a Yankee after that game.

 
Using a 3 game slash rate in which one of the pitchers you are trying to debate against as part of your defense is beyond stupidity.

 
Giants expect Angel Pagan back tomorrow in the lineup. He said he felt great after his Fresno rehab game. Even with losing their large West lead, they are still the Wild Card leader. Happy to see him back though.

 
According to Philly radio, the cubs have claimed Cole Hamels off revocable waivers and he apparently has approved to move if a deal is agreed upon.

The Cubs have the money and the tradeable assets. I don't know if now is the right time to add an expensive veteran arm or if Hamels is the right guy to go for. I guess that's why Theo makes the big bucks.

Fair point, but I guess it depends on how they think Hamels will hold up for the next 5 years of his contract. Really no red flags to date health-wise. He more than likely will still be a pretty good value for them in 2-3 years.

Each game has to be viewed in a vacuum. This isn't football. When the National Anthem plays each day and they hand the ball to a new pitcher, what happened the day before or the day after is irrelevant.

* With the exception of an extreme circumstance, obviously, such as Miggy and V-Mart getting hurt. That will tend to change the dynamic of a team.

Tomorrow, we see McCarthy actually open as a slight (word usage for Long Ball Larry) favorite with a 50.2% win probability.

This reminds me of a recent Posnanski article.

The Royals have a hitting philosophy. They have an all-encompassing hitting philosophy that they have followed religiously for three years now.

The philosophy can be summed up in five words: Put … the … ball … in … play.

That’s it. That’s the whole thing. The Royals hire and fire hitting coaches, they move players in and out, they switch lineups – but this is the constant: Put the ball in play. Since 2012, the Royals have walked 100 or so fewer times than any team in the American League. And since 2012, the Royals have struck out about 200 fewer times than any team in the American League. For three years running, they have struck out the fewest times in the league. And, not coincidentally, they have been at or near the bottom in walks too. This is not an accident. The Royals are an anti-strikeout baseball team. Period.

In theory, putting the ball in play seems a pretty sound strategy – especially in today’s strikeout-crazy game. In theory, putting more balls in play should give the Royals a better chance of getting hits, as in a higher batting average. And in a way it has: The Royals .263 average since 2012 is fifth in the league behind only Detroit, Los Angeles, Texas and Boston.

But in practice, as you probably know, chasing batting average is not an effective strategy ESPECIALLY when you are chasing empty batting averages filled with lots of singles. And that’s exactly what the Royals batting average is: Empty. Since 2012, they have hit more singles than any team in the American League except Detroit (which, at last check, had one more single than the Royals). But they are dead last in extra base hits. Even more telling, they have hit 50 fewer home runs than the punchless Minnesota Twins and 100 fewer homers than any other team in the American League over those three seasons.

And, like they have been the last three years, the Royals are near the bottom in runs scored.
