So day 1 is all CONMEBOL

Day 2 is CONCACAF vs UEFA

Day 3 is AFC vs UEFA

Day 4 is split CONMEBOL vs UEFA and CONCACAF vs UEFA

So you could have (hopefully not) 4 quarterfinals which match up 2 teams from the same confederation with 4 different confederations represented.

Updated for the last time with the group stage done.

Confederation Records So Far*: W-D-L (points per game)

South America: 13-2-3 (2.3)

Africa: 3-4-8 (0.9)

UEFA: 13-6-9 (1.6)

Concacaf: 5-3-4 (1.5)

Asia: 0-3-9 (0.3)

Does the US roll the dice and start Gonzo again?

That is pretty much as good as he can play. If he comes back to normal it could be ugly.
Has everybody but Green played?

eta: and Guzan
Green, Mix, Guzan, Rimando, and Chandler
I really thought Chandler played... subbed in, no?
He got off bench to sub in once when DMB looked hurt but never came in.

Subs have been

Ghana: Bacon, Brooks, Zusi

Portugal: Yedlin, Wondo, Gonzo

Germany: Bedoya, Yedlin

I will admit I was wrong AGAIN.

Congrats to the USMNT and all of their fans and best of luck going forward.

I will admit to not thinking the USA will advance (and probably said as much earlier in the thread), but was always rooting for them and am glad they did!!

I just realized from these last two posts that not a single team got 5 points this year.

In 2010 there were 2 just in the US group.

oof.
it's actually generous as it rounds up. It's really 0.25 :) -QG
I am way too lazy today to confirm but I have to think that might be the worst regional record since the expansion to 32.

Even little New Zealand kept up a 1 point a game pace for Oceania last WC.

My biggest goofs

1) I thought John Brooks was a complete waste of a roster spot

2) I honestly did not feel that the US could advance, all things being equal

My best was believing the MLS players would perform well.

For all of my scenario posting - only two tiebreakers were needed:

Brazil over Mexico for first in their group.

And USA over Portugal :)

For those that know, who would you say are the top 5 teams based on how they've played in this tournament?

I'm not much of an aficionado, but personally I'd go with:

1. Netherlands - embarrassed the reigning champs and beat a very good Chile team 2-0

2. Argentina - I know they struggled, but they got 3 wins, Messi is playing well and their group wasn't a cakewalk

3. France - They dominated a good Swiss team, handled Honduras and mailed it in vs. Ecuador

4. Germany - Ghana put them to the test and they only earned a draw, but to destroy Portugal and handle the US today, this team looks great

5. Belgium, Brazil or Columbia.....I can't decide. I like Brazil best for no real reason other than they are at home and I think Columbia's group was too weak. Belgium I can't get a read on. 9 pts on goals...either they have a great defense or their opponents were weak. Probably both.

Let's do this fun chart - latest FIFA rankings with whether or not they progressed :)

Form is important but anything can happen in a one game knockout format. A strike of brilliance, a dodgy call, an unlucky bounce or the cruelty of penalty kicks can all turn out to be more important than how a team performed over the past two weeks.

Anyone else think that if Fab did not sign early with 'Gladbach, that he would have had a ton of suiters as he would be on a free this summer?

Ok, best young, relatively unknown players from the first round?

For me it was three players who stuck out, Campbell from CR, James from Colombia and Atsu from Ghana.

O/U on the chance Jozy plays vs Belgium? 20%?
Some one asked this earlier. It is so hard to tell. I don't think any odds can be given until we get a clear indication that he has returned to training with at least some jogging (has this happened?)

If I had to guess, the % would be pretty low.

Some Euro bias in the FIFA rankings maybe?

Is/was James really that unknown? He is a staple of my FM14 team...figured he was more widely known.
I didn't see today's game but I was impressed by Atsu. Chelsea has such an embarassment of attacking riches and Atsu doesn't seem like a Mourinho kind of guy.

He was for me. I have no access to watching Ligue 1, so I only know the big name players there and miss out on some young talent.

Some Euro bias in the FIFA rankings maybe?
It is formula based. It takes into account opponent strength, type of game (friendly, qualifiers, regional championships, WC finals etc) and regional strength.

You can read more detail here.
