One of the surprises I had with hockey is the importance of penalties and the vast difference in infractions that can put a player in the box. I get 2 minutes for shoving a piece of wood into your back and driving you face first into the boards. But I also get 2 minutes for accidentally flipping the puck into the stands from the defensive zone.

Yes, each sport has to deal with the kind of unique situations in their sport. In the case of the hockey example, it's a very big deal when your team can't clear the puck out of your zone so you can get fresh players on the ice. The more tired they get, the more difficult it gets to clear the zone. So flipping the puck out of play would be a tactic to stop the game, so they have the rule against it. Elsewhere on the ice there isn't the same incentive to put the puck out of play.

On that note, who is responsible for producing the television broadcasts? Is that a FIFA thing? Does FIFA do the camera work and then hand it off to the ESPN's and other networks to do the audio?

The 6 minutes was legit since it included the "cooling break"

 
It might be kinds of nice to have a continuously running clock in American football. Four 15 minute quarters with no commercial breaks. I think that might make it enjoyable again for me.

Fifa hires one production company. The feed then goes out to the entire world.

ESPN can cut away from the feed if they want to splice in their own stuff but that rarely happens after the debacle in 2006.

He thinks 6 minutes was pretty short since that means there was only 3 minutes of regular stoppage time. When you consider the scoring, subs, etc. 3 minutes is pretty short.

But, that is what happens in nearly every basketball game. How many points are "given" to basketball teams in the course of a full game due to a referee whistle? Each team in a basketball game has the ability to draw a foul after every possession with the opportunity to score points, if in the shooting motion before the fifth foul.

So, in essence, there is no difference and one could make the argument that basketball has much more opportunity to flop than soccer by a large margin. A soccer player isn't awarded the opportunity to take a penalty kick if he is fouled outside of the box yet a basketball player is awarded the opportunity to score twice if he is fouled 70 feet away from his basket (this is equal to a soccer player getting fouled 350 feet from his goal).

And, a penalty kick is a rare thing... something that does not happen 40 times a game... AND... when it does happen, the soccer player doesn't get two attempts at a score.

 
Glad I was in Europe for most of WC2006. Sounds like the coverage was terrible.

FIFA might be corrupt, but they have not problem with beautiful women, and for that I salute them.

During US/Portugal, the announcers said there would be no added time for the water break they took. What is the rule?

The point is, scoring in the NBA isn't as significant. Sure, there might be 40 fouls in an NBA game but on the whole, people only complain about a few calls. So you're arguing about 4-6 points in a 200 point game. Compared to soccer where it is 1 goal in a 1-0 or 2-1 game. The PK is much more important b/c one bad shooting foul is easily overcome.

This is a perfect example to why drawing comparisons between sports shouldn't happen.

This thread has had more than its fair share. My favorite so far was whoever compared Brazil to the USA Mens Basketball Team.
