***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Completely disagree that there was a lot of flopping in the game, by Neymar or others. So weird how two people see two different things.
BumpLike everybody else, I think flopping/diving sucks but I watched that Brazil game twice and didn't see all the glaring examples that some of you did. There were a ton of legit fouls. Some were embellished, but there was still a foul so to me that's not the same as a dive where no foul was committed.
It doesn't matter as long it is understood that anyone who disagrees is a hater or doesn't understand certain nuances of the game.
Seriously, enough already. What point are you still trying to make? Can you stop making this thread unreadable. Enjoy the game. Or don't. But just stop.

I didn't say that. I said it felt like I watched a different game than some of you.

Messi sure is a gloryboy with all his ball hogging. Note to Messi: if 3 guys are covering you, 2 are open somewhere.

One question I have.... Why don't teams come up with better set pieces off the sideline throw in?
It is rare on free kicks but it is non existent on throw ins outside of if a team has a guy who can really chuck it.

My guess as to why they don't is because the coaches probably don't want to risk something fancy and get a quick turn over where they are unbalanced defensively on a counter.

It's tough to make a long throw into the box with pace. Corner kicks can also be swerved in which makes them harder to defense than a more predictable throw. There is the occasional long throw specialist who have unique abilities to deliver throws in. Rory Delap used to get a couple of assists per season like this for Stoke. Gary Neville usually also took the throws from forward positions when he was playing.

Hazard> wait
He did not live up to what I expected of him this tournament. I thought he was going to make the leap.
I think he's already taken the leap for his club. Five games in a tournament is an awfully small sample.
Yes and no. I agree he is great at club level and I agree that this is a small sample but most of the big names showed up big time in this same small sample. I just don't think he did is all.

Great win by Argentina. Best match from them this wc. Hopefully di Maria is not badly hurt. Higuain came up big today and their defense was generally solid.

Pretty good World Cup for Belgium for being so young, missing Benteke and not getting much from Hazard. They should be a serious contender for Euro 2016 and if their defense ages gracefully, 2018 as well.

People will look back at the results decades from now, see Belgium made the quarterfinals and think it was a good result for a small country. Maybe that was as far as they reasonably could have been expected to get but the way they did it was disappointing to me. They were the sexy pick coming in with outstanding results in qualifying and a collection of young stars just entering their primes. But in this tournament, they always seemed to be less than the sum of their parts. Losing Benteke hurt but they still should have had enough attacking talent to tally more than six goals in five games. They just lacked the killer instinct or finishing touch or pure luck they needed to succeed. Hazard didn't look like the same guy from Chelsea, Fellaini and Mirallas did pretty much nothing and de Bruyne was effective only in spurts. I expect Marc Willmots to be the fall guy for their showing. Hopefully, Belgium will still exist in 2018 and they'll be back.

I'm 5'7 and I think I could beat Fellaini for a header.. Is there a worse 6'4" player when it comes to battling for a header in midfield? Every once in awhile he manages to score one, but he was just outworked by the Argentine midfield today IMO.

Nice little battle back there from Belgium there at the end.

Coming into this World Cup, commentators basically said that Argentina was very powerful in attack, but weak defensively. That may be so, but the attack has not produced quite the goal scoring that might have been expected. 8 goals in 5 matches is not overwhelming. On the other hand, their defense has been strong, having conceded only 3 goals.

The tournament was the topper on what has just been a terrible season for Fellaini. I don't think van Gaal has any use for him. His next move will be crucial.

The Argentine defense today was so well organized. They rarely if ever got stretched and never seemed to give Belgium players like Mirallas any space to run at them.

Night and day from that Germany/France game yesterday. Great game, exciting finish, and.....passion.
Strange how viewpoints can differ. I thought it was a relatively boring game, outside a few moments of brilliance from Messi.
yeah, have no idea how you found the argie/belgium game more exciting than the french/german game.

To me, today's game was extremely boring. Argentina stopped coming forward almost altogether after their goal, saw about a billion back passes. Dont think Belgium had any dangerous attempts, oh and tons of flopping as expected.

Did Hazard even dress?

I think Thorgan got on the plane instead of Eden.

How would have the USA fared against this Argentina team? Better or worse than Belgium?

I think if Belgium didn't give up an early goal, this game would have been more epic. Kind of forced their hand so early.

LETS GO TICOS!!!!!!!!

I'm somewhere in between. The last 20 minutes or so were pretty awesome, but a large chunk of it was Argentina sitting on its lead.

Think you're right, but I saw Hazard had "E. Hazard" on his kit this tournament.

Looked up and down their bench, didn't see another ####### Hazard on this team.
