***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Dzagoev must have ####ed capello's wife or something. Dude was their best player at Euro 2012 (at 22 years old) and can't get on the field now.

Good morning. In less than nine hours, Americans from here will join others from around the world. And we will be watching the most important battle in the history of United States Soccer.

US Soccer - that should have new meaning for all of us today.

We can't be consumed by our injury concerns, or their Cristiano Ronaldo

We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps it's fate that today is the 22nd of June, and Jurgen will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from World Cup annihilation.

We're fighting for our right to advance, to exist.

And should we win the day, the 22nd of June will not just be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the Yanks declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night!

We will not vanish without a fight!

We're going to live on!

We're going to survive!"

Today, the USMNT celebrates our Advancement Day!
Really need Bill Pullman to recite this for us.

Should be plenty of extra time added

ETA - only 3

SAF would have received 6

The corner kick was just played, the ball was deflected back to the guy who kicked the corner and he gets called for offsides. Terrible.

In my amatuer opinion, soceer needs to change these three rules:

1) Once the ball is inside the box, there can be no offsides. (Unless the ball is played back outside the box)

2) You can not intentionally play the ball back to your goaltender.

3) Two minutes 'power play' if it is determined that a player has flopped.

eta- just realized I was watching on a small delay.

Awesome so far. Loved the buildup to the goal and the goal call.

Unlike a lot of rule changes you hear fans talk about, eliminating offsides once the ball enters the box is a good one to explore IMO. Like hockey's blue line.

Could also get down with a sin bin for yellow cards -- maybe down a man for 2 or 5 minutes, depending on the foul (again like hockey/rugby) with red cards saved for the most eggregious stuff.

van Nistelrooy is a smart guy -- I think he's added something interesting every time they go to him.

Like that lineup he just showed too. Dempsey alone up top with both Zusi and Bedoya in.

2) You can not intentionally play the ball back to your goaltender.
FIFA did tweak this rule back in the early 90's. Back then you could play a ball back to the keeper and he could use his hands. The rule tweak was that if you now intentionally play the ball back to your own keeper he can no longer use his hands.

I would have no problems with some rule changes as it has been almost 2 decades now since the last tweaks that had any affect on the game (the previous one I mentioned, 3 points for a win and "being even" is now onside instead of previously being offside).

I also know that FIFA is loath to change a sport that is loved by billions unless they get the proper bribes of course.

Interview with Dempsey. Not much new there, but he says he's not wearing a mask.

Also, it's 88 in the shade down on the field right now, and considerably hotter in the sun. Conditions will be better after dark (early there since it's winter), but it'll still be sticky and hot.

ETA: lineup possibly revealed shortly after 3:40pm following team meeting.

Kinda fixed and I know that you know it, but just to be clear to anyone else reading.

Not sure why playing the ball back to your keeper is any kind of a problem in the first place. There are 11 men on a side. No reason to restrict letting the keeper in on it.

15 - There have now been as many goals from substitutes at #WorldCup2014 as there were in the whole of the 2010 tournament.

Pass to your keeper, who picks it up.

Throws it back to the player.

Player kicks it back to keeper.

Keeper picks it up.

Throws it back to a player.

Kicks it to keeper.

Etc etc etc for 90 minutes.

Teams that need a draw can just about completely kill a game this way.

It was a mess back in the early 90's. Playing back to the keeper was killing the flow of games because of how much time he was able to waste when picking it up.

The rule change seems small but it was affective.
