So is Algeria is really this good or is South Korea just really that bad?

I mostly suspect the latter but Algeria would be an interesting match-up possibly in the Round of 16 for the USA if they both go through.

Who is our Algerian specialist?

I wonder if all of the people pouring money on the US know anything about any of these guys other than CR7?

Grant Park looks packed

Given the game time, and number of outdoor viewing areas across the country, this could be the most watched US game.

Hope the US sends the crowds home happy.

It probably will be the most watched soccer game in US history, which will make it the most important for the future of soccer. Either the US loses and potentially common fan just sees the US as hapless losers in soccer or there is a win or tie and more people get excited about soccer.

Good morning. In less than nine hours, Americans from here will join others from around the world. And we will be watching the most important battle in the history of United States Soccer.

US Soccer - that should have new meaning for all of us today.

We can't be consumed by our injury concerns, or their Cristiano Ronaldo

We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps it's fate that today is the 22nd of June, and Jurgen will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from World Cup annihilation.

We're fighting for our right to advance, to exist.

And should we win the day, the 22nd of June will not just be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the Yanks declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night!

We will not vanish without a fight!

We're going to live on!

We're going to survive!"

Today, the USMNT celebrates our Advancement Day!
Really need Bill Pullman to recite this for us.
Chet from Weird Science?
I realize this is :fishing: , but funny enough Bill Paxton (Chet) has a pretty good role in Edge of Tomorrow, which I saw yesterday. Great flick.

Do all those people count as 'one' viewer in the Nielson ratings? :bs:
Andy would know better, but yes, I think 1 tv = 1 viewer, or close to it. They may have a formula that puts it slightly higher than 1 tv = 1 person, but not enough to account for the various places where 1000's of people will be viewing.

The highest was 24.3 million for the WC2010 Final on ABC. This game being on ESPN will obviously limit the size more than being on ABC would have.

I still expect a huge audience though but I don't know if it can reach those numbers with the English portion on ESPN. It could very well be the second most watched game of the entire tournament outside of the final.

June 22 is already an important holiday.....No Panty Day!. Don't even try to change that.

Nielsen measures two things (ignoring the often misunderstood share number)

1) # of TV households (rating)

2) # of viewers (viewership)

There is no hard formula for converting households to tv viewers. They track how many people watch each game (it is a variable that certain families have to enter in the box)

Sports in general gets the short end of the stick because it is the only real item that people gather to watch and Nielsen has never really figured that out too well but it is across all sports so soccer is not picked out.

That being said, the various huge outdoor viewing parties will be in the noise if this comes in the 15-20 million viewer range though.

Group H scenarios:

Belgium are through and win the group with

1) a win or tie

or 2) an Algeria loss or tie

Algeria are through with

1) a win (they win the group with a win and a Belgium loss)

or 2) a tie and a South Korea tie or loss

or 3) a tie and a South Korea win by exactly 1 or 2

or 4) a tie and a South Korea win by exactly 3 South Korea fails to score at least 3 more goals than Algeria

Algeria are out with a loss

Russia are through with

1) a win and a South Korea tie or loss

or 2) a win and a South Korea win and South Korea's margin of victory is the same or less than Russia's margin of victory

or 3) a win and a South Korea win and South Korea's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Russia's margin of victory and Russia outscores South Korea by at least 3 goals

or 4) a win and a South Korea win and South Korea's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Russia's margin of victory and Russia outscores South Korea by exactly 2 goals and Russia wins the drawing of lots

Russia is out with a tie or loss

South Korea are through with

1) a win by 4 and an Algerian tie

or 2) a win by 3 and an Algerian tie and South Korea outscores Algeria by at least 3 goals

or 3) a win and a Russian win and South Korea's margin of victory is at least 2 more than Russia's margin of victory

or 4) a win and a Russian win and South Korea's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Russia's margin of victory and Russia fails to outscore South Korea by more than 1 goal

or 5) a win and a Russian win and South Korea's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Russia's margin of victory and Russia outscores South Korea by exactly 2 goals and South Korea wins the drawing of lots.

South Korea is out with a loss or tie and by the looks of things at worst they have to win by 2 goals in any scenario and in most cases they need to win by 3 just to have a chance.

Highly doubt it.

But if i'm a betting person and I see three injury forced replacements, I might take a look...

Knowing how dirty some of the betting syndicates are, it wouldn't shock me. Heck maybe they know CR7 is really banged up and wknt be able to do anything or maybe they paid off the ref.

three injuries (Patrico, Coentrao, and Hugo A) AND 1 red card (Pepe) right?

Do we all agree it's been a successful World Cup with a point tonight no matter what happens against Germany?
I guess it all depends on your viewpoint. If you expected the US to make the quarter finals, no that would not be great.

For those of us just happy to be alive by Game 3, I would argue 4 points from this group is more impressive than 5 points from the poor group in 2010.

Correct, I whiffed on the red.

Interesting that Zusi is on the left and Bedoya's on the right. Anyone want to take a shot at what that means?

Also, these scenes from around the US are crazy.

Bedoya = more defensive - cover back on CR7

Zusi = more offensive

I suspect they will switch at least once in the game.

USA Ghana was 15.9M

O/U for this?
20MWould have crushed it if ABC had held onto this game....
20 million sounds pretty accurate.

It should break both the ESPN and Univision records that were set for the Ghana game.

We knew from the second the schedule came out that this was going to be one of the most watched games of the entire WC.

My guess...Bedoya tacks back better than Zusi. That gives Fab support against Cristiano. Cristiano and Nani will switch sides, but the majority of the time CR7 will be on the left.
