Fabulous game by the lads today. Obviously they are gutted along with us fans but coming put with 4 points after these first two games is really the best many of us could have hoped for.

So many US players had fantastic games: Besler and Jones at the very top of the list. And congrats to Yedlin, really nice debut on such a big stage, he did not look nervous at all.

I will need some time to process this but really good performance after what was the worst possible start.

What happens if US/Germany just sit down on the field for 90 minutes? Do they get rid of this stupid group play for a better format?

US did have 8 guys back and Portugal attacked with 6. There were 5 US players defending the middle of the field.

It's a freaking beautiful pass from Ronaldo there. Wow.

Well there goes any chance I have of following USA soccer. Way to blow it
Still in good shape to advance, we played great. That wasn't an easy match-up. Portugal is world class and was playing for their life.
They had it won. That's like giving up a grand slam with one out and one strike left to win by a run.
Yes it is. But it was game 5 and we are still are up 3-2 in the series.

I watched that Bradley play a dozen times and can't figure out how the Portugal player got it from him.
Because he's lazy.
why aren't the other players all packed back on D there anyway?
Jurgen was waving them back when they were down by the flag with 94 off the clock. No kidding. DVR it.
Is it against the rules to have the entire team back on D at that moment? Seems pretty common sense.

Going up against their Ace.

I thought Bradley was A LOT better tonight but that final play will get most of the headlines.
I thought he lacked the energy that he needed in that position. I thought he did a poor job, generally, in pressuring the ball. When Jones was up higher, he had a lot more energy, and was a lot more effective than Bradley.

Bradley's giveaway was horrendous. I was yelling at Beasley to close Ronaldo down (gave him WAY too much space to hit it) but you can't blame him. 32 year old legs after 90+ minutes in that heat. CR7 hit the absolute perfect ball.

Total gut punch, but we're still in Ok shape. Ghana looks better than Portugal so far and they'll have an extra day of rest. (and didn't play in Manaus). I'd be very surprised if they lose, let alone by more than 1 goal.

Its gonna come down to how mentally tough we are. Blowing it so late like that could easily ruin us.

edit: Of course, the bigger fear is that Ghana trash Portugal.

He will play vs. Germany, but I'm not so sure he should. He's in a key position and he's been downright awful .

Don't get me wrong - a freebie against Germany was a much preferable outcome - but the US with its back against the wall, has seem to come up with the plays it needed. I don't think this will ruin the team...not recovering physically might, but I think they will be fired up ready to go.

So after GD the tiebreaker is total goals. We're

one goal ahead of Ghana. If we stay within a goal of Ghana and don't lose by more than one then we can't get bounced.

He was horrible. He had a few bright spots in the first half but had more bad touches than good overall. Dempseys goal was a result of an awful touch by Bradley that bounced the right way. The last second turnover and lazy response to it is shameful.

So we're rooting for Portugal hard on Thursday and making sure we don't get blown out vs. Germany.
Exactly. If we keep it to one goal against Germany, Ghana has to beat Portugal by two.
Actually, even if we lose by 1 and Ghana wins by 1, that will even up GD. And Ghana is only 1 goal scored behind us, so it's very likely we'd lose the next tiebreaker. We REALLY need a tie between Ghana/Portugal or a Portugal win. I feel better about that than a tie with Germany.

Cameron was way worse tonight than Bradley. It was a great pass but he was the closest CB on that last goal and could have done better. The first goal was just a joke. I'll give him credit for playing out of position I guess.

Yes we can. We can lose by 1 and if Ghana wins by 2 or more, we're out.

Bradley was easily the Worst Man of the Match.

Germany is an elite team for sure, but we just saw Argentina barely sneak by Iran and a few other surprising results in this tournament. Hopefully things break right, but I'm encouraged by what the US did today coming back from what seemed like a devastating start to take a late lead. They have shown quite a bit of resilience in both games. They honestly were lucky to hold the lead against Ghana and got burned today. Sucks, but I liked a lot of what I saw from them today. Not many gave them a chance to advance out of this group anyway and they are still in a good spot.

My comment has as much to do with his first game than this game. Against Ghana he was putrid - he was just Ok for me tonight.

If we win 2-1 we'll be 5-5, if they win 2-1 they'll be 5-5 and we'd win the tie-breaker b/c we beat them head to head.

So that's sort of the break-even I think. Higher scoring losses for us, or higher scoring wins for them tilt things one way or the other.
