We talked before about how many of the stars have shown up big time in the first round.

What about the other end? What big name players did not?

I give CRo a pass because he is obviously not healthy and even then still found a dagger in his back pocket for the US.

Not that he played poorly, but I thought Ya Ya might have had one of the those "everyone get on my back" tournaments, and that did not really materialize.
Rooney and Balotelli can both point to moments, but I don't think either can really be happy with their tournaments. Aguero looks awful (and Di Maria hasn't been as sharp as I think everyone thought he would be on form).
Seems like all of the RM stars have had sub-par performances. Who was here from Atletico besides Costa?
Courtois.

Goalies don't count - they just stand around all season anyways...

The US kicks off at 12:00 ET, or the broadcast starts at 12:00?

I'm looking for the moment of kick-off so I can schedule my extended... um... lunchbreak.

Costa.
IMO, he gets the same pass that CR7 gets (the rest of Spain does not ;) ). Toure is a good one. Cavani maybe? Hazard?

Maybe its me but that does not like a clear red card. His foot hit the ball and slipped off to hit the leg. He did not go for the leg directly.

I'm with you, Andy.

And it looks worse in slow-mo replay. But studs-up and all.

eta: screw it- I don't know how Valencia was supposed to go into the tackle there.

I caught part of the replay and this was my thought. Not a red (United bias aside). But need to see the replay again and not just of the studs hitting his leg

A 3rd goal for the Swiss would be huge bte. I would effectively put Ecuador 2 goals down instead of the kne they effectively are now.

These third round games (or whatever they are called) have even pretty bad compared to the first two rounds.
I think that is expected, with some teams playing for nothing and other teams focusing on specfic results.

If things work out, the US Germany game could be the worst of the tournament for a neutral.

Valencia Red Card

P.S. I'm done for the the day....
He was on the ball and the slide rolled his foot off and onto his knee. Not a red. Some could argue its not a foul.
I strongly feel that a straight red has to include intent, of which there was none there. Yellows can be for clumsy challenges.

You are right, 15 years ago, that barely draws a whistle much less a straight red.
Truly awful call. Even worse than the red yesterday. That's a game changing call.
