If this half finishes 0-0 we're basically through unless both Germany and Ghana go goal crazy in the 2nd half, correct?
If Ghana goes up by two, we are out if we lose. It would take a combination of 4 goals to beat us as it stands now.

US odds up from 1/4 to 2/9 currently. So roughly 81% chance of advancing at the moment. Up from 78%. Portugal goal not as telling as I expected.

Howard looks pretty sharp so far.
I would take the US with those odds all day. It would take a disaster at this point.
As a Bills fan, I wince whenever people say things like this.

And hilarious that when I clicked "Like This" it said "you and Aaron Rudnicki like this"

Those passages of play where they knock it back and bat it around for 20-30 seconds and then manage to link back up with the midfield are exactly what the doctor ordered.

For more perspective on the gap between the US and Germany, consider that arguably the US' best player in this tournament, Jermaine Jones, was capped only 3 times by Germany 6 years ago, and was not considered "good enough" to make their team.

Fabian Johnson, who is a rock solid right-back, was never capped for the German nats.

Still a lot of futbol left. We've seen a lot of big 2nd halves in this WC and if Ghana manages to score 2 in a win then a 1-0 loss wouldn't be good enough for us.

They still make me nervous though - not enough players moving int o position to receive a clean pass - that will lead to an untimely turnover imo

USA +1 goal difference

Ghana -2

Portugal -3

A Ghana goal would tie the other game up (good for the US) and a Portugal goal would leave our overall position exactly the same -- just with Ghana and Portugal flipped. So far, so good.

I sent an email to the IT Director and told him my internet was running slow. And that I assumed it was because of everyone watching the game on their computers. I suggested he get the OK to turn the game on in the breakroom.

He agreed. Everyone in my office can thank me later, I guess.

Does head-to-head matter if we tie Ghana in points and GD?
Goals scored tiebreaker comes before H2H. we have scored 1 more than Ghana so far.

It goes to Goals Scored after GD. Only then H2H. Ghana can beat us on GS relatively easily.

Is there still any beer left over.

Would much rather face Algeria or Russia with less rest than Belgium with one more day. But at least if we do play Belgium we get the advantage of the extra day.

Yeah, people keep talking like the difference between 1st and 2nd in the group is marginal but isn't the difference between Algeria/Russia and Belgium pretty huge? I understand getting out of the group is the #1 goal but if, say, Portugal scores again to go up 2-0 isn't it worth playing for the win today?

ETA: I'm also worried that a turtle strategy would hurt us because a 1-0 loss is much worse than a 2-1 loss and puts us at risk if Ghana comes back to win.

Yep this is the outcome that scares me the most right now.
Definitely the scariest possibility right now. Ghana has shown a lot in the 2nd half of its games - hopefully their team turmoil takes a toll and they pack it in as the 2nd half progresses.
