***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (2 Viewers)

I ####### hate the way NBA games take 30 minutes to play the last two.

So get this...I don't watch the NBA.

I also don't go to the NBA thread and ##### about how long it takes to play the end of a game.
What's your point?
I think it was pretty clear.
So we are borrowing the whole "Love it or leave it" schtick from the Conservatives now?
No. We are hoping people will act in this thread like they would other sports threads.

I don't go into baseball threads and point out the 65,000 things wrong with that sport.
Nothing different about this thread and the other sports other than the apologists refuse to see the blatantly obvious.
This makes no sense. Look, so we can hopefully cut this out:

1) Non-soccer fans hate diving in soccer.

2) Soccer fans hate diving in soccer.

The difference is that non-soccer fans often claim that the diving makes the sport unwatchable. If that's the case, then don't watch.

Soccer fans aren't arguing that the diving is ok. It's not. It sucks. But it doesn't make it unwatchable for us. And, for right now, it's not going away and there's nothing we can do about it. Can there be rule changes to fix it? Absolutely. But that goes for lots of other things.

No sport is perfect. As mentioned already, the end of basketball games have gotten out of control with the timeouts. Those that like basketball probably similarly don't like it but they accept it. I, on the other hand, have gotten so turned off by it that I just don't watch. I don't claim that basketball fans like it. I just accept that's how it is and choose not to watch.

Similarly, I'm a huge football fan yet there are things that I can't stand about it. Big pass interference penalties and the lack of replay regarding them is a big deal to me. Those penalties can completely affect the outcome of a game (much like a dive in soccer). Yet, despite that, I still enjoy football and don't let it interfere with my enjoyment of the game.

Those who come here that watch soccer once every 4 year (that used to be me recently, fwiw), and complain how the diving sucks just gets old and tiresome. And the reason the backlash is there from those of us who watch is that WE KNOW IT SUCKS TOO. It's nothing new. We're not apologizing for the diving. It's just that it's just one of those things that, while we'd all wish it changed, is just there and you either live with it or you don't watch. We choose to watch.

I suggest you don't if it bothers you that much. I also suggest you and others stop coming in and crapping in a thread over and over about the same thing as if those of us that follow it have no idea and like it how it is.
You realize that this whole discussion evolved from Rud's comment that there wasn't any flopping last night right? It was a complaint about A GAME, not THE GAME. No need to send the bat signal up and make the same tired arguments, I don't need convincing.
Go back and read what I said. There is embellishment in just about every game. I said there wasn't any more in that game than normal, yet Ham and others seemed to see a dive on every hard tackle.

TROLLLLLLL. i mean GOLLLLL ;)

I don't understand the troll accusation. If you're watching this game, it's like a different (and MUCH better) sport than the Brazil game. By contrast, it's hard not to see that the ref's lack of control led to pure thuggery.

The tone in this game is utterly different and so, so much better.

Great no-call by the ref there
funny that you say this. I'm all for contact as I think too many times the call is made when it shouldn't have been, but he clearly clipped the foot of the Belg. player which prevented him from completing his move/play.

There's going to be contact, not all are fouls imo. That one, I think, was a good no call. If he calls that then it sets the tone for guys to go down more easily

Was just kinda joking off the whole convo for a cheap laff  especially during game time. Have left the :pokey: and :boxing: to other folks as it's game on :) -QG

Amazing to watch Argentina make these long passes that just drop perfectly on the receiver's foot. Time and time again. Just crazy skill.

Completely disagree that there was a lot of flopping in the game, by Neymar or others. So weird how two people see two different things.
Bump Like everybody else, I think flopping/diving sucks but I watched that Brazil game twice and didn't see all the glaring examples that some of you did. There were a ton of legit fouls. Some were embellished, but there was still a foul so to me that's not the same as a dive where no foul was committed.

Two South American teams get together and there is bound to be quite a bit of gamesmanship. After watching Germany and now this game compared to Brazil, the games are night and day. It isn't even the foul/no foul but its the rolling on the ground like you were shot wasting time as well.

Benfica legend coming on now for a Benfica legend ;)
Is this a like for like switch or does Argie have to adjust?
They'll need to adjust a little. Perez is more of a CM#8 where Di Maria is more the flashy winger. They should be able to control the ball through the midfield a little more consistently, but they'll definitely miss Di Maria's pace and play making.

There is no "like" for Di Maria. He's there second best player. Huge loss.
I did not mean skill wise, I meant position wise.

For example Boyd would have been a like for like switch for Jozy. Boyd would not be a "like" for Jozy in playing ability but you would not need to positionally adjust the lineup.

I think the comparative elegance of this game shows just how bad the ref was yesterday. I saw a combination of thuggery and flopping yesterday, both feeding each other. Today, both teams are focused far more on control and possession and less on hacking at each other / pretending they were hacked at. It's a single game I had an issue with. I'm done with it, but come on... At least acknowledge that that game was uncommonly divorced from the fundamentals of the game.

Hell - a guy had his spine broken and the play didn't particularly stand out from what you saw the entire game.

Maybe just to get to half with the lead but Argentina looks like it might start getting more men behind the ball and focus on possession.

Time for a dumb question. What purpose does the semicircle above the penalty box serve?

-QG
During a PK, that serves as an extension where nobody can enter. Gives the kicker some more room for a run up.
Ah okay - thx :)

The "arc" is part of a circle, 10 yards from the spot - players have to be 10 yards from any free kick. It is the equivalent of the shaving cream (or really the center circle.)

It doesn't matter as long it is understood that anyone who disagrees is a hater or doesn't understand certain nuances of the game.
