I think it would be a good idea to have some of the various bowls serve as the playoff venues. That way the advertisers don't throw a fit, and people can see quality teams instead of a 6-6 team vs a 7-5 team. Not yet....that'll happen in time. They added 8-12 more teams to the playoff? So far so goodSelection committee to have between 14 and 20 members. Wisconsin has been doing it for a while now without a big top ranked recruiting class. As stated...guys like Watt who was a two star guy....and so on.The point is, M and Ohio have both had top 10 classes the last two years. No other Big Ten team has. If that trend continues, its going to be very difficult on the other teams. Can WI maintain its status with subpar recruits? Sure. But it won't be easy. Recruit rankings are not the be all/end all - but in general, you'd rather have a 5* player than a 4*, a 4* than a 3*, etc.
Its being a weasel...but so many of them do it that it is accepted. So Hoke is a weasel coach?Yeah, that's the sign of a weasel coach. Rodriguez tried that a few times and got burned. Then he needs to be in the ears of the presidents and ADs (the people setting the budgets), not the coaches. Not all the schools have the budgets that Michigan and OSU have for recruiting and the coaches can't change that. They can only ask if the change would be considered.ETA: On top of all this is the irony of him going after players from other B1G schools...that can't be lost in all this.I think he genuinely wants to see the whole conference imrove as a whole. The B1G is quickly becoming the PAC10 of the last 10 years. OSU/UM then everybody else. The SEC is so far a head of everyone else because the conference has depth. Serious depth. He want's the B1G to strive to do the same. And the best way to do this, is to improve recruiting and build the conference as a whole.Perception is reality on this topic. We already know you can't take a step in the SE without falling into a top 10 recruiting class. That's because of the number of quality players. Accumulating HS talent is one thing. Getting it to transition to college is another. But none of this was the point of my posting. My points were two:1. In the B1G, it's me against you. Week in and week out. You do your thing. I'm going to do mine.2. Given #1, why on earth would he care if the other schools are recruiting to the level he thinks they should be?I'm pretty sure he's gonna get a lot of "Mind your own business." kinds of comments/looksWell, he's right assuming you agree that lower recruiting rankings equate to worse teams. And we all know your opinion, Commish. The top 2 recruiters dont let down once a guy is commited. Its not being a weasel, it's being persistent. Thats why they will win and the others will lose.
Made that mistake a few times in college. My parents were in town one weekend, went through great pains to make my apartment presentable, I'm showing them my around...completely forgot about the three-foot glass bong just sitting on the counter. I think I even cleaned out the bong and then just left it sitting there. What's wrong with this picture??@ Davin Bellamy visiting Oregon

Too bad for him it wasn't Washington. That's one way to open the spots up when you over sign a class

I'd honestly like to know how many players have gone to Bama under Saban on scholarship and didn't finish 4 or 5 years on that scholarship (excluding NFL guys). A friend in the SEC told me that Bama - within the rules - is masterful at getting guys without a future on the field to leave/quit/get-injured so they can use the scholarship or roster spot on someone else. That's one way to open the spots up when you over sign a class![]()
This will impact those kids in a big way I'd guess...probably transferring to a small school and not getting the regime they obviously need. 3 of them were very highly thought of coming from HS. Maybe they can land somewhere and turn it around.
Uh...Auburn has signed 100 players in the last 4 years compared to Alabama's 99....and you still fielded the worst team in SEC history last year. That's one way to open the spots up when you over sign a class
Not a chance unless the new committee decides to put a substantial emphasis on OOC games.http://sports.yahoo.com/news/big-ten-discusses-beefing-football-235249818--ncaaf.htmlDid not see this posted...hopefully others follow suit...but doubting it.
Not seen any "B1G B1G B1G" kind of chanting or conference rah rah crap in the thread. It's just a bunch of rivals hating on each other and basking in the glory of others losing in the conference. Exactly. You're ok with it because it isn't the SEC. If I started an SEC football thread and put a subtitle like that it you and the rest of the conference honk brigade (who just happen to mostly be Big 10 fans) would be all over it. Go take your incredibly rotten bait somewhere else.I'm not sure why the subject is being changed. I don't think I've ever admonished anyone for talking about the strength of teams in a conference...ever. I've always talked about how stupid it was for fans of other schools to pull for rivals or other teams in their conference. I've talked about how stupid it is for a fan base to be chanting conference nonsense instead of celebrating their team. I've never had a problem with people discussing the merits of teams within the conference.I'm pretty confident I could name the handful of posters who were doing what you claim, and I know at least one of them was doing so in a mocking fashion. I'd like to see the list of Michigan fans pulling for OSU though...I'm not saying you're lying, but I'll believe it when you show me.There's plenty of talk about the strength of the conference in the first couple pages, yet not one reference to how stupid it is to talk about that.
It's not like you should expect it though, Plasma. The last time we had this discussion when I went back and did my little exercise on how they treated the subject when the conference was better in football in 2006 told me everything I needed to know. Page upon page of people touting Big 10 conference pride even as far as multiple Michigan fans bragging about how they couldn't wait to see OSU pound Florida, followed by the cries of "caring about a conference is stupid" that magically became relevant after Michigan/OSU got pounded in their bowl games.
Shhh...they are so hellbent on showing hypocrisy where it does not exists so they can defend the actions of those that cheer for conference rivals.I'm not sure why the subject is being changed. You guys equate discussion of the conference and it's teams with conference pride. There are several posters in that very thread that aren't even fans of B1G schools contributing to the discussion and there's a TON of piling on teams when they lose with the mocking and jabbing expected from rivals. Nowhere do I see rivals pulling for each other to show conference unity. Nowhere do I see rivals hoping teams win OOC so the conference looks strong. Nowhere do I see fans of the crappy teams hoping on the conference bandwagon taking credit for others' success and assigning it to themselves. All THOSE things are what I talk about and generally mock.
Here are a couple OSU/Michigan fans doing so from a quick look..I'd like to see the list of Michigan fans pulling for OSU though...I'm not saying you're lying, but I'll believe it when you show me.

'jabarony said:Michigan always loses on the west coast. I'm sure Florida would have suffered the same fate today against USC - they were ON in the 2nd half today. The funny thing is the 2nd best SEC team got beat by the 3rd best B10 team AND got waxed by USC at home. Though I can't knock Arkansas too much, they are the only SEC team to play anyone decent out of conference.2-0 soon to be 3-0.
No one is changing the subject. You guys (not necessarily you, specifically) have constantly brought this kind of stuff up when people were rationally talking about conference strength or other matters. It doesn't take someone saying "haha SEC #1 you losers" to set you guys off. Pretty much any discussion of conference strength involving the SEC will bring in several comments about how stupid it is to even broach the subject. At this point I'm pretty sure you guys are so sick of hearing the SEC chants on TV that the mere mention of the term "SEC" on this forum brings out a smart-### response that is often unmerited.I'm sorry, but if people made the exact same posts as the first page of that B1G basketball thread but substituted in SEC football, there would be no shortage of people in there talking about how stupid it was that anyone cared.I'm not sure why the subject is being changed. I'm talking about me...and my perspective. Saying "you guys....well not you specifically" is disingenuous. Being "set off" assigns a level of interest that isn't there for me. I find it amusing and confusing all at the same time. At this point, I think you are completely misunderstanding what people take issue with. That was just a tiny sample from the 2006 bowl season.I've never contended that SEC fans go further in than conference pride than any other conference, and I've said that they do many times. The problem I have is that there is this idea that the SEC is the only one that cares about it. The main difference with the Big 10 fans is that they only care about it when their conference is good enough for them to make a point.So...you found a few people doing it.
Yeah...thats the same as what has been going on with the SEC honks both here and chanting SEC SEC SEC at games....and places like Arkansas printing up national title shirts as was linked earlier in this topic.
Like you're doing again in this thread?Yes, we know the SEC takes it much farther,
Did you happen to notice that the people you quoted aren't the same people challenging the SEC fans? I don't think anyone, ever, has said that only the SEC does it. There are fans in every fan base that does something similar. The SEC takes it the furthest. You will find the random Michigan fan that pulls for OSU in a bowl. You'll find the random MSU fan that pulls for Michigan. There's no question about that. They are clearly the exception not the rule though. That's the difference...at least from my perspective. That was just a tiny sample from the 2006 bowl season.I've never contended that SEC fans go further in than conference pride than any other conference, and I've said that they do many times. Of all the discussions I've had on this board over the years this is one of the most frustrating, because you guys just keep moving the goalposts. If SEC fans discuss conference strength in any way, shape, or form then you guys come out of the woodwork to talk about how stupid it is that we care. Then when you guys discuss conference strength in a similar manner and it gets pointed out to you, it's "oh no I wasn't talking about that, I was just talking about the extreme end of it".
Yes, we know the SEC takes it much farther, but the idea that SEC fans are the only ones who care about conference pride is just babies taking their ball and going home. When the Big 10 is good enough to be in the argument about conference strength they have no problem discussing it or bragging about it. Again, just look at the 2006 bowl season thread and you'll see 20 pages of people arguing about the Big 10 being better than the SEC and bragging about Big 10 wins from teams that aren't their own. Then, suddenly, when the world is down on the Big 10 right then start the "oh well it's a stupid argument anyway". Not one person in that discussion said that until after Michigan/OSU got blown out that year, and then suddenly there was tons of it.
If the Big 10 were considered by most to have been the best conference in college football for the last half decade, had the best bowl and out of conference record, and have won straight 7 national championships I doubt you'd hear a bunch of people chanting "B1G B1G B1G". At the same time, I'm 100% sure you wouldn't hear a bunch of people saying "it's stupid that anyone cares which conference is the best" just like they didn't say that the last time the conference was good and just like no one said that in the first page of that basketball thread.
You know you love itThis again![]()

I think the idea is the SEC "pride" has gone above and beyond anything else. You even admit that. That was just a tiny sample from the 2006 bowl season.I've never contended that SEC fans go further in than conference pride than any other conference, and I've said that they do many times. Seriously? When have I ever said "SEC! SEC! SEC!" or "rah rah go SEC we rule everyone else drools!".My discussion about conferences is usually about the subject of conference pride in general, or how perception of conference strength affects rankings/recruiting, etc. I'm not the guy who goes into Alabama/PSU threads and says "see that's why the SEC is better suckaz", yet that's what gets thrown back in my face every time this discussion comes up.Just so I'm clear on the terms. When me and you are discussing this you're allowed to reference all SEC fans everywhere, but I'm allowed only to reference you specifically.I'm talking about me...and my perspective. Saying "you guys....well not you specifically" is disingenuous.
Oh I'm completely aware of what people are taking issue with.If SEC folks are talking about conference strength, then the whole subject of caring about conferences is stupid. If you guys are talking about conference strength, then only rooting for other teams in your conference is stupid. If you guys are rooting for other teams in your conference, then only going "rah rah" and bragging are stupid. If you guys are bragging, then it wasn't you specifically so it doesn't count. The notion that the regular SEC posters here are going around cluttering up threads with talk about how "my conference pwns!" is way overblown. The majority of the time this discussion comes up it starts because some fan of another conference makes a smartass remark about someone alluding to conference pride in any manner. For instance, in the basketball thread someone laid out the predicted results for the Big 10/ACC challenge with the Big 10 coming out on top and saying "Big 10 wins". Someone quoted it and said "I hope it goes like that". A completely tame comment, but if it were made in regards to SEC football there would be some smartass remark about rooting for those other teams to win when you should be rooting against your conference rivals. And god forbid if someone started a thread with a subtitle of "best conference in the country" in regards to the SEC, even if the actual subject of the thread was a completely unrelated post about a Kate Upton sex tape.At this point, I think you are completely misunderstanding what people take issue with.
1. No goalposts have been moved. They are all separate topics, but the SEC guys want to lump them all together. 2. I don't think I've seen more than 1-2 actual discussions about the conference's strength. That's because it's not in question. A Tenn fan giving "logic" for why they pull for Alabama is NOT talking about conference strength.Of all the discussions I've had on this board over the years this is one of the most frustrating, because you guys just keep moving the goalposts. If SEC fans discuss conference strength in any way, shape, or form then you guys come out of the woodwork to talk about how stupid it is that we care. I'm not sure I've ever used the broad brush of "all SEC fans". I do my damndest to qualify my comments by saying "the SEC fans that...." If you aren't a fan that does that, it doesn't apply to youSeriously? When have I ever said "SEC! SEC! I tell you what....the next time the bold happens in a discussion of SEC football...shoot me a PM...please.A Wisconsin fan also did it and the prediction had his team losing.ETA: To your example, a guy predicting the B1G wins and then a MN fan saying he hopes it plays out like that (because the OP's prediction had his team winning) seems to have nothing to do with anything. Is it really hard to understand that a MN fan would want their team to win?
