*** Official 2015 College Football Thread *** (4 Viewers)

I just saw an interesting story on the local news. A local FBS team, Charleston Southern, are off to their best start ever at 5-0 and have scheduled a game for their open week in October and will travel to play Colorado.

I don't know that I've ever seen a college football game scheduled in the middle of the season.

I assume make up for the flooded out Fresno State game? Who is Fresno State playing?

Updated KRACH ratings through games of Sept. 29. Things starting to take a little bit better shape.

Updated "Plus-Minus" ratings through Sept. 29. Again, a little more common sense coming into the math with more games played.

N. Illinois over Oregon and LSU = Impossible to take serious.
That should change once more games get played. But I should point out that Wes Colley, who has one of the six BCS computers, has NIU at 11 with Oregon at 9 and LSU at 17.

And this is what happens when you try to follow the BCS insistence that game scores not be part of the equation. It becomes a referendum on who you play, not how you did.

So looking at that, there is no question that NIU has the best win of the three teams so far (beating 4-1 Iowa on the road). Oregon's four opponents are three pedestrian teams (Virginia, Tennessee, Cal) and a mediocre FCS team (Nicholls State). The FCS team that NIU faced (Eastern Illinois) is much higher rated.

And the lone decent team that LSU played was a loss to Georgia, one that obviously counts toward 25 percent of its rating so far. And since we're not allowed to determine any difference between whether Georgia beats LSU by 3 or Georgia Southern by 50, that's what happens. And LSU's three wins are also very pedestrian (TCU, UAB, Kent State).

Assuming all three keep winning, Oregon and LSU will get the benefits of their stronger opponents while NIU settles into its MAC schedule.

I just put these here as fodder for conversation. Computer ratings can be screwy, especially at this time of year, but they also are unbiased.

For the record, the same system including scores has Oregon 5, LSU 6 and Northern Illinois ... 44. So there you go.

Just curious. If you're already intent on using a different system than the BCS, why stay restricted by their rule about not counting scores?

Because my intent was to try to "mimic" to a certain degree what the BCS was doing. Many of the computer programmers will readily admit that they have systems that include scores that would be much more "accurate", but the BCS hasn't allowed them to use them for several seasons. Sagarin is one, and I believe Massey is another.

The second list I published is a pretty crude formula, which I adapted from one that Doug Drinen and Chase Stuart wrote about on the web several years ago. And yet, it isn't far off from the ones published by the "real mathematicians" by season's end. The KRACH is a sophisticated model that is widely championed in college hockey as better than the RPI, and which a Cornell professor helped me figure out how to calculate. To the best of my knowledge, it isn't even possible to add game scores to KRACH.

One other thing I wanted to do is try to look at the picture before the BCS rankings ever get released, which is usually mid-October. Two of the six computers won't even release rankings until then and a third, Sagarin, readily admits he adds bias to the rankings until enough games are played. Another, Billingsley, is frequently mocked by other mathematicians for the assumptions he enters in his formula to make them more closely reflect popular opinion, which defeats the whole purpose of a computer ranking (and yet, the BCS continues to use it, for obvious reasons).

Of course, all of this would be solved if I just waited like everyone else until there was more data. But what fun would that be?

Here is how that Plus-Minus system looks with scores included (I've capped Margin of Victory at 28 for any given game).:

Sagarin, Massey and Colley all have the Buckeyes in the 12-14 range in their rankings.

UCLA fans... What does the QB recruiting board look like? I saw they offered Kaaya yesterday. Do they think they can flip him?

FYI, I'm a Miami fan so I hope they can't.

It's Kaaya or bust right now. They put all their eggs in the Kyle Allen basket and every other high level west coast or local QB prospect (Manny Wilkins, Brad Kaaya and another dude whose name escapes me) committed before Allen did. Allen then committed to A&M in June and UCLA was left without any uncommitted options.

Yes, they think they can flip him. They've been after him pretty hard lately and had a bunch of players and coaches at his game last week before finally offering. There was one other guy they took a look at last week, Rafe Peavey from Missouri, but they ultimately decided on Kaaya.

He apparently wants to sit down with the UCLA coaches and discuss the offense. He's worried that it might not suit him because he's not much of a runner and the Bruins use a bit of zone read. But, Noel Mazzone, UCLA's OC, did not use any zone read stuff at Arizona St. when he was there with Brock Osweiller in 2010-11, so the Bruins are likely going to inform him that they tailor the offense to their QB's strengths and weaknesses.

The word from Kaaya's head coach at Chaminade is that UCLA has a very good chance here. You never know, though.

Likely AA Safety HaHa Clinton-Dix from Alabama is suspended indefinitely.

Huge blow to a young secondary. Other rumors, but length of suspension will depend on team rules violation or something else (agent)...we'll see.

Thanks for the reply. One of the UM insiders says he's as good as gone, but the offer isn't commitable yet.

That will really screw up the UM QB recruiting since they let Edouard go and it seems Rosier will flip as soon as he gets an SEC offer.

it appears a junior staffer lent him money. The staffer has been put on leave but you have to think the damage is done. Having an athletic dept employee directly give him money (loan or not) pretty much means they'll vacate the games year to date. Sad way to dethrone the Bama machine.

I don't know how to imbed links any more: http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2013/10/report_alabama_assistant_stren.html

Whoa pre....not saying you're wrong yet, but some compliance 'experts' don't think the school will be punished, because they investigated and suspended when they discovered:

http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2013/10/ncaa_compliance_expert_says_cl.html

There are examples of the NCAA laying off schools if they react quickly....OSU (before Tressel was busted) for one.

Clinton-Dix was at practice today....a positive sign I think.

True, OSU got a light punishment before they found out Tressel was involved. But this isn't some random tattoo booster. It's an employee, a university representative. That's not a minor difference. The loan itself isn't a big deal. I doubt Clinton-Dix gets that harsh of a punishment assuming no further details come to light.

IMO, the big deal is that someone that works in the Alabama athletic department knowingly and willingly broke NCAA rules and covered it up. You can't say the university didn't know. The university's representative committed the violation.

That's how I immediately viewed it at least. I'm not an NCAA compliance expert and have no idea what the NCAA will do or how it will be handled. It's just really hard for me to see how they could not absolutely hammer the university for the actions of their staff.

There is some more color though....now it appears Clinton-Dix was robbed the night prior to the loan....confirmed by a police incident report...and repaid the loan shortly after, confirmed by a bank statement.

It appears really bad on one hand....and really harmless on another.

Due to the compliance dept and processes...you're probably right. When that sucked, we got hammered....twice.

Whew. Bruins escape with the victory. 34-27. The score doesn't show it, but Utah played great defense. It went right down to the wire after the Utes got a very questionable (IMO) onside kick.

Stoops :lmao:

While I agree, this year "SEC defense" label appears to mean very little with all the young defenses (especially compared to the recent past), that doesn't negate the defenses of the past. It's not hard to understand that an improvement in QB play coupled with a pretty good drop off on defense can lead to the results we've seen. This dude's pretty obsessed with the SEC for whatever reason. Was he shunned from a job or something?

Hey Tim, what do you think of Hundley as an NFL prospect?
I think he will go top 15, likely as qb3.(Teddy, marriota, hundley, Jff, Murray, Boyd)
Agree with this. Of course I'm hoping he sticks around.
As a note, while it's early I will not be the least bit shocked if the Browns use the Colts #1 on JFF which will perhaps be the most awesome match of player, fanbase, and existing team since Zack Randolph ended up on the Grizzlies.
