I missed the UNC onside kick the other night, seems like a full blown controversy today.

Why can't we review that on replay? It would take five seconds unlike the usual 6 minute college review.
The "offsides" they called was because one of the players on the right side of the kicker ran to the left before the ball was kicked. That was very poorly explained. But if you look closely they only had 10 players on the field so he makes six on one side and three on the other. I don't know if the rule says there must be four on each side or says no more than six on one side. If it says four on each side they got the call right. If it says no more than six on one side, they screwed up because they probably assumed there was 11 players on the field.

But yes, plays like this should be reviewable.
Players are only allowed a five yard running start when their team is kicking off.

Even sideways? I would have guessed it meant they couldn't start > 5 yards behind the ball, but running parallel doesn't seem to be any great advantage.

Just found this (from 2011, but don't know if it's changed)

When the ball is kicked:
a. Each Team A player, except the holder and kicker of a place kick, must be behind the ball
b. All Team A players must be inbounds.
c. At least four Team A players must be on each side of the kicker
So if UNC would have had 11 guys on the field, they might have been OK with the guy running across.

I'm not sure how the rule is actually written. What I've heard the rule is is that players are limited to a five yard running start. It doesn't look like any player did get more than a five yard running start in any direction, but the ref that through the flag wouldn't have been able to see how far the player running east/west ran before the kick, so maybe he thought he did.

I honestly don't know what the hell he saw that made him throw the flag. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but there's not much to give. Honestly, I think he just botched the call.

Clemson WR Mike Williams who was 1st team all ACC last year and preseason all ACC this year said he's coming back next year. He broke a vertebra in the first game of the year after catching a TD pass and running into the goal post. He was our best WR heading into this year.

Also I believe at this point the only person on offense we'll lose is our RT. So, 10/11 back on offense and we get our biggest receiving threat who hasn't played all year.
Flip side is you lose a lot on defense and you have to come to Tally.
and travel to South Bend.
I don't think that's correct. I believe our first trip to South Bend is in 2019 or 2020. I checked far in advance and told my wife that's what I want for my 40th birthday (although itll be a year or so early).

We do play Auburn next year in Auburn.
Why on earth would anyone want to go to South Bend on their birthday? :oldunsure:
One of the best game day experiences of my life. If you're a big CFB fan I can see it.

He got the call correct. There were 3 men to the right of the kicker. The rule is 4.

Anyone else eagerly anticipating the Western Michigan - Middle Tennessee match up? And why would they play this game at 12 PM? They want people to travel to the Bahamas for a game and then take away their prime beach hours???

This whole bowl scheme is out of control. We might as well just give everyone a participation trophy. Most of the games have no meaning anymore...nothing but advertising campaigns. Seven MAC teams in bowl games... .

IT'S ALMOST THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like watching football. Who cares what meaning it has. The bowls have different tiers (playoffs, then rose, then NY6, on and on); assign whatever meaning you need to have from that.

All the teams get additional practice for next year, they all get to have a few days of fun, and many get to travel to some decent locations. Probably three or four too many bowls, but I'm not complaining.

Exactly. A lot of these players bust their balls all season. I don't see the problem with them getting a free vacation to somewhere possibly warm and interesting for their effort. Who is being harmed here?

Yeah, they royally screwed up the announcement/explanation. Or the line guy screwed up and the formation bailed him out.

Totally agree. I hate being able to turn on the TV and watch a college football game at anytime.

Clearly, I am in the minority here. I like football as much as the next guy, but bowl games used to be special. There used to be a sense of accomplishment associated with earning your way to these special games. That is gone. Sub .500 tams are now "rewarded". It cheapens the experience IMO. If the goal is to simply have more football, extend the regular season.

Bowl games being special died a long, long time ago.

Now there are probably 10-15 games that qualify as 'special'. It's pretty easy to see which ones they are. Those bowls have more tradition, pay out more money and send the teams to nice locales. Nobody in their right mind would compare the rose bowl to the beefs bowl.

Really, just enjoy the games. If there's a game you don't like don't watch. Who cares?

How many more bowl games are there?

I mean, I guess if you're an Eastern Kentucky fan where making a bowl game is your Superbowl then maybe if I really stretched it I could kind of see your point. But I'm pretty sure that Auburn fans aren't running around high-fiving that they're going to the Birmingham Bowl.

I'm pretty sure I heard them call offsides, but it was pretty loud...they could have called illegal formation but got both the words and sign incorrect. If I'm being honest, I really don't know why this is a discussion. Everyone around me felt like they got away with one and were happy to move on. The refs screwed up...happens all the time.

Or the player running from right to left was supposed to be on the right side and was on the left so he was on the wrong side. But continue with the endless conspiracy theories?

It was noted earlier that they only had 10 players on the field. If they had had 11, then there probably would have been a 4th guy still on the kicker's right side.

go for it??

Per Brett McMurphy Big 12 will require league members to play at least one non-league game vs. Power 5 team each year

Baylor probably already called Wake Forest

OU has Houston and Ohio State next year. Top 5 Power 5 team and the #1 non P5 team.

YIkes.

I'm probably going to the game next year in Norman. One of my wife's vendors has a company suite and I think we're invited.
I'm going to go in 2017 in Columbus.

Per Brett McMurphy Big 12 will require league members to play at least one non-league game vs. Power 5 team each year

Baylor probably already called Wake Forest
Would fill in a nice BU non-conference schedule in 2020 with Incarnate Word and La Tech!

Bob Bowlsby: "Expanding to 8 is going to change postseason that is unfair to people that have invested 100 of years to bowl tradition"

The only bowl that has been around for 100 years is the Rose Bowl.

Maybe he meant collectively? Like maybe there's 20 people who each feel invested in the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl.

It's gotten so bad for Texas that even with a gigantic bag of money they can't lure away TCU's QB coach to be their OC.
