That had me scratching my head before the game as well. Ross was a threat to score on a kick return and Roberts was not. The rest of the Skins were not much of a threat to score either. I don't get it at all.And why in the world was Roberts activated over Ross yesterday?
I had you beat. I knew as soon as they deferred to receive in the 2nd half. However, I did not know they would defer the 1st and 2nd kickoff of the game.as soon as i saw the onside kick i knew it wouldnt end well.![]()
And then don't forget that down 17 before the half, on 3rd and short, we kicked a FG to make it 17-3. Why go for it early in the game on 4th and long, but kick the FG down 17 on 4th and short? That had me scratching my head before the game as well. Remember all the happiness a couple weeks ago after the Tampa Bay game? And now there's this New England game which was over before the 1st quarter was over. What I've learned is that, if they make a stirring comeback, the Skins are 1 point better than another 3-5 team. And they don't even belong on the same field as the Patriots. One of the Skins players said yesterday that it was like they were the Patriots' scout team.
I agree with MikeApf, it'll take everything they have to achieve a 6-10 record. They're going to have to outscore New Orleans and that's not going to be easy at all, with the lack of a running game, the safe passing game, and the unimpressive coaching. They're regularly giving up 25 points or more a game, and their offense isn't a finely-tuned machine. It's going to be a struggle.
BTW going for it on 4th and long so early in the game was utterly stupid.
I had no problem with the 4th and 11. It would have been a 54 yard FG and it seemed somewhat windy yesterday (even several of Brady's passes seemed to get caught in the wind some). However, I don't think they had "go for it" in their mind on 3rd down, which is a problem. If they knew they wanted to go for it on 4th, I'd prefer to have seen a draw or screen or something super quick on 3rd down to give a much shorter 4th. Instead, they're sacked making it 4th and 11. (Granted, I think that was the play that Moses missed the snap count and was blown by. Maybe they had something quick called but Cousins couldn't get to it?)And then don't forget that down 17 before the half, on 3rd and short, we kicked a FG to make it 17-3. It's not just on 4th downs; it's a general lack of any sense of flow, continuity, setting things up, capitalizing on momentum --- the usual "game sense" that good coaches have. Gruden doesn't have it, and seems to send in random plays and personnel groups based on things he thought up during the week. What's done in a game should be based on what has happened, and is currently happening in the game.dgreen said:And that brings up yet another difference between NE and us (and, really, many teams). They always know what they want to do. With the Redskins, it seems like 4th down calls are just calls in the moment. 4th down calls can be successful because of what you do on 3rd down and you have to make that decision earlier. I just don't get the feeling that they enter with a mindset of what they want to do in those situations. I think calling a timeout is evidence of that. They take several seconds to decide. Players are unsure of what's going on. By the time they get a play called, it's too late and they have to call timeout. It's happened a couple times this season and I think it shows a lack of clarity on what to do in those situations.
I thought the whole game that if the Redskins were scoring a lot, or were stopping the run, Brady would and could have thrown for as many TD's as necessary.dgreen said:Yesterday's game was weird. Obviously it was never really close, but I spent much of it thinking the Redskins were doing some good things. I kept thinking, "They might actually make this somewhat respectable" and then they'd majorly f something up and ruin that.
Oddly enough, it was one of Brady's worst games this season. I didn't think he looked that great for being who he is. And that was the fewest points in a game for NE so far this season. They piled up a good amount of yards, but the defense did a good job of holding to FGs a couple times and did a good job forcing some turnovers. But, none of that really matters when you can't stop the run, can't run it yourself, and drop so many easy completions.

In the Redskins' last 4 games, they've allowed 187 rushing yards per game -- 31 more than anyone else.
I'm not upset they went for it on 4th and 11. You're in no-man's land there, so it made sense. But then, you're down 17 to the Pats on the road. FGs aren't going to cut it. Go for the TD there. I don't think anyone would have 2nd guessed that one.dgreen said:I had no problem with the 4th and 11. I'm sort of indifferent about what to do on the 4th and goal from the 5 to end the first half. I would have been ok going for the TD, but I don't think FG was a horrible choice. However, once again, there's still a problem. It was 3rd and goal from the 13. In that situation, throw the ball in the endzone or out the back of the endzone. throwing short is exactly what NE wants you to do. The FG is a chip shot regardless of gaining yardage there, so it was a useless play...unless there was a clear strategy to go for it on 4th down...which there wasn't.
The main reason I'm ok with the FG at the end of the first half is because we got the ball to start the 2nd half. You can go in the locker room and say, "We got some points, we get the kickoff, here's what we're going to do on our first drive, and we're going to be within one score." You fail to convert that 4th down and you're down 3 scores and an opening half drive is nice, but doesn't put you within striking distance. But then, you're down 17 to the Pats on the road. FGs aren't going to cut it. Go for the TD there. I don't think anyone would have 2nd guessed that one.
Really baffling to me. Seems like Gruden has zero use for him![]()
What puzzles me is he seemed to use the Law Firm quite a bit (498 carries in 2 years) in his offense in Cincy... Is it because they typically didn't fall behind like we do?Really baffling to me. Seems like Gruden has zero use for him![]()
Yes. The Bengals were (and are) a strong team with a strong roster, and they make the playoffs every year. What puzzles me is he seemed to use the Law Firm quite a bit (498 carries in 2 years) in his offense in Cincy... Why is this so difficult to comprehend? It's not rocket science.Really baffling to me. Seems like Gruden has zero use for him![]()
I just saw that. Lichtensteiger on IR, making LeRibeus the starter for the rest of the year and making Brian de la Puente (who hasn't played in a year) the backup.
The good news is that Lichtensteiger would be back for the playoffs.![]()
AlsoPerry Riley Jr. made his sixth start this season next to Keenan Robinson at inside linebacker, but he received fewer snaps than backup Will Compton. Riley didn’t record a tackle in 49 snaps, while Compton had a team-high 10 tackles in 52 snaps. Redskins coach Jay Gruden said it was a coach’s decision to give Compton more playing time over Riley during the game.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/football-insider/wp/2015/11/09/redskins-looking-at-possible-lineup-changes-at-inside-linebacker-and-strong-safety/The Redskins will also take a closer look at strong safety, where backup Jeron Johnson played more than Trenton Robinson, who has started every game this season at the position. Johnson had six tackles in 49 snaps compared to Robinson’s four in 32 snaps.
The secondary has looked ok considering they lost their top two CBs and their starting Safety who was pretty good. They haven't looked out of position this year like I'm used to seeing. Looks like coaching is better but the personnel isnt there yet.Any Thoughts on how Joe Barry is doing replacing Haslett? Or is the talent not at a level yet where you can really judge the DC?
I feel like it's a game we could win. Wouldn't surprise me at all if we pulled this one out. We're a 1 point dog this week. This game seems like a W for some reason. Mainly because the Saints are such a different team outdoors.
I'm sure I'm wrong though![]()
I have him in a couple lineups and have him going in a season long league too.I'm considering using Cousins in my Draft Kings this week. I'll be shocked if he doesn't hit at least 250/2.
I really think that's his floor. Have you seen how bad the Saints defense is? And that's been at home. On the road they're an even ####tier team.I'm considering using Cousins in my Draft Kings this week. I'll be shocked if he doesn't hit at least 250/2.
I really like the idea of continuing to tinker with the parts on both sides of ball if guys are underperforming. In years past, we'd have had some other team's high price over the hill player locked into a starting spot regardless of performance on the field. If Johnson and Compton offer more, plug em in and see what they can do.fatness said:Riley might be losing his starting job to Will Compton.

That's what good coaching doesBicarri Rambo was involved in three turnovers yesterday. It sure would be nice if the Redskins could find a safety like that.
Who was it who stunk up the joint here, went to SF and got lasik, and was all of a sudden pretty decent? That's what good coaching doesBicarri Rambo was involved in three turnovers yesterday. It sure would be nice if the Redskins could find a safety like that.

We seem to do that with safeties.
He's also been burned on a few big plays too. Not too much difference from when he was here, big risk/reward player.Bicarri Rambo was involved in three turnovers yesterday. It sure would be nice if the Redskins could find a safety like that.

He dropped what had to have been 5 pick-6s his final year with us. Goes to SF and picks off 6 balls while taking one to the house. I remember him making a one handed pick on either SNF or MNF and I was irate.Carlos Rogers!Who was it who stunk up the joint here, went to SF and got lasik, and was all of a sudden pretty decent? That's what good coaching doesBicarri Rambo was involved in three turnovers yesterday. He needs to show something in the final half of the season. I am comfortable saying that Morris will NOT be on the team next year, but beyond that it's wide open. What do you all think of Jones's future? Starting RB next year?
Should be a fun game to watch.Feel like we can win this one today!
Same vibe I get. I think its a big game for Ingram and the skins struggle in all areas today. Brees plays efficient and saints win 24-10.Keenan Robinson out. Compton gets the start.
I actually have a pretty bad feeling about this game. I think our offense is worse than the Saints defense. Key will be our defense. I don't think it will be the shootout everyone is expecting. I'll go with the super common 18-17 score.
