*Official 2016 Philadelphia Eagles* - The year of Change (1 Viewer)

Love it

Jim Schwartz on Jordan Hicks getting D lined up: "It's really not that complicated, so I don't want to give him any gold stars for that."

Some WR thoughts:

Aside from Pat Shurmur, nobody involved in Kelly's passing game had NFL experience and it showed.  It's possible the slow development of Huff and Agholor's quiet season were due to a combination of simplistic passing game concepts and weak coaching.  They now have 2 NFL QBs and an NFL WR both in putting the Offense together and in day to day coaching.

Jordan Matthews is a guy who I think wrings every bit out of his ability but he's a straight line runner, not very shifty after the catch, but also in how he runs his routes.  Where I think he could possibly benefit is with the introduction of coverage based sight adjustments for WRs in the passing game.  They clearly weren't a thing for Kelly, guys would regularly run from space to coverage because that's the route they were assigned.

A smart guy like Matthews who works very hard at his game and who now has a couple of seasons experience should pick this up quickly and could really benefit.  Something like this could help put him make the jump to putting up #1 WR numbers.
In the same vein, a nice breakdown of Agholor's rookie problems.

You would think better use of hands and timing of routes would be something that better coaching could instill.

I said Schwartz would (recommend) cut someone that would surprise you. Today it looks like that could be Rowe.

Camp is so far from over and he's young and can totally recover from this and become a starter. I'm just saying, this is exactly what I was talking about. Like he almost says "we've been thru minicamp and OTAs, pick the D up already!" If Rookie Jalen Mills can pick it up and produce, why can't he?

And also please note it's not just Schwartz thinking this. The writer called him "far from a starter" so he's unimpressed watching practices.

This was a good article, shows that Nelson's strength is getting separation at the break, which makes him better at short / intermediate routes rather than verticals.  Much like Maclin in that sense, too.  Still fast enough to be a sneaky deep threat but does his best work on shorter routes.

Fingers crossed he can have a good season.

He was new at CB, right?  Played safety mostly in college, and there were ?? over which one he would be at. if I recall.  Hopefully he can work it out - even if he's not starting from day one of a new defense, I hope he can learn from the vets and become a solid contributor, we are short enough draft picks as it is, losing another 2nd rounder will hurt us.

IDK what he played in college.

Schwartz was "mean" yesterday. Beat up the defense in the press. Loves the safeties performance, but the rest....he let em' have it.

Here's one article that I think you can see classic Schwartz coming out

http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2016/8/5/12385262/jim-schwartz-eagles-defense-philadelphia-practice-defensive-coordinator-

ANGRY-

"You saw what happened today. We'd make a play, give up a play. Make a play, give up a play. That's not a way to play defense; that’s not a way to play football. We've got to be consistent and that's our challenge. Our challenge is ironing that out, not just individually with guys like Eric or any of the other corners, but as a unit, we have to be more consistent. And that goes for everybody."

Carries on a few more paragraphs

BUT-

When the Eagles began live tackling drills on Wednesday, the defense shined. Schwartz's unit was especially dominant in the red zone.

So it's NOT as bad as it seems. People calling him mean and angry, they aren't adjusted yet to Schwartz. It'll come.

Titans and Browns and Eagles (all with DCs from the Titans last season w Schwartz at team HQ) have all had an offseason of the word consistency being repeated. It's totally true. You can't look like a stud D one play and give up a big play the next. Losers do that. Doesn't matter what ya did on first if on third you allow a big play. All three coaches have had to BUST this mindset wide open. Each team is way too happy to make a single play. Fascinating to read this from afar and see the similarities.

Schwartz discipline is becoming an issue in that article too. (Same presser so there are a few articles on this) Doesn't matter what ya thought, what ya tried to do, where you were drafted, or blah blah blah if you're supposed to be in a spot, get there!

I promise that if all you Eagles fans read all the quotes, you will be like "umm yeah, totally basic" and you will like/appreciate what Jim is up to.

Elliot Shor Parks just tweeted that Ryan Matthews didn't finish practice. I'm on my way out, but headsup anyway. Might be some injury news for you

Whatever Schwartz decides is fine with me...our defense needs an attitude adjustment and someone like him.  The talent is there with a lot of these guys and he just needs to pull it out of them.

Pax Philadelphia Update:

http://theeagleswire.usatoday.com/2016/08/06/source-carson-wentz-well-ahead-of-jared-goff/

The Philadelphia Eagles made a huge investment trading up in the 2016 draft to acquire quarterback Carson Wentz.

The plan for Wentz’s rookie season is to have him spend the majority of the year on the bench. The Eagles re-signed their starter during the 2015 season, Sam Bradford, and the plan is for Bradford to start in 2016 as well

Doug Pederson might want to reconsider his stance on the starting quarterback spot.

Having an open competition could bring the best out of the team’s quarterbacks, including Chase Daniel. So far early in training camp Wentz looks like he belongs in the NFL.

According to a league source, Wentz appears to be outperforming No. 1 overall pick, Jared Goff, early in training camp.

“Wentz is well ahead of Goff in terms of grasping an NFL system, but neither quarterback is ready to start day one,” the source said.

NFL.com’s Media Analyst, Bucky Brooks, wrote an article discussing Goff’s struggles early in training camp.

“To my surprise, Goff isn’t anywhere close to being ready to play as a starting quarterback at this stage of training camp,” Brooks said. “Now, this isn’t a direct knock on him or his future potential. It can be a process.”

Well, JMatt has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his knee.... out 2-4 weeks.  I kind of doubt we're going to see him in the preseason at all.  Nelson is really going to have to step it up and hopefully Matthews is ready to rock by week 1.

Preseason Game 1 - What I'm Watching

  1. Eagles Football Baby!
  2. 4-3 front.  Will be great to see guys attack off the ball again.  I want to see at least one play where #91 fires through the line and blows somebody up in the backfield.  QB, RB, don't care.  Just want to see the guys with wings on their helmets shooting into the backfield again.  Also want to see the DEs in attack mode.
  3. Carson Wentz - There won't be too much we can take away from this because there's no All 22 film from preseason games, but I'll be looking for as much as I can find.
  4. Running game - It will be vanilla and they won't show much but we will see the core plays in how they expect to move the ball on the ground.  Curious to see what they do with the inside 3 OL. particularly Kelce.  Willing to give him the benefit of the doubt due to the weak OG play on both sides of him last year, but he needs to bounce back.
  5. Corners - First look at McKelvin, Brooks.  Does anyone else show up?  Will Mills, Rowe show something?
  6. Matt Tobin as 1st team LT.  Maybe he'll be better?  He'd almost have to be, wouldn't he?
  7. Kicker battle -  Just kidding.
  8. Undrafted WRs - can a plucky underdog rise to take Josh Huff's roster spot?
  9. Who'll be this year's preseason All Pro - Sneaky pick: RB Byron Marshall.  I'm pulling for him because I haven't seen him drop half a dozen screen passes then clutch his helmet in two hands, like Macauley Culkin in Home Alone.  Because Kenyon Barner's very experienced in that role.

#Eagles OT Lane Johnson is facing a 10-game PED suspension, source said (as @DarrenDegaetano reported). He's appealing. Would be a bad blow

If Lane's suspension is upheld & Peters misses time this year, we could again see Tobin at LT and Kelly at RT protecting an injury prone QB.

So... I guess it's good now that Wentz isn't being thrown out there.

Trying to find any silver lining here. WTF Lane?!

I wonder how his contract was structured. I assume a lot of his guarantees go away?

Tunsil was there at 8. Wonder how the team would have looked like with Tunsil at 8 and then a QB next year.

Per ESPN's Field Yates, the suspension voids the remaining guaranteed money in the six-year, $66.112 million extension Johnson signed in January.

I remember last year around this time holding my breath, almost everytime it seems that they get the 4 game, they follow it up with a longer one.  Don't learn their lesson.

Cut him and GFY Lane. He gets two years for his next failed test. Good luck you stupid ####### moron.

Knee jerk reaction but this does put him in Josh Gordon territory in that he can't be relied on long term.  Hard to have that kind of :2cents: tied up in somebody at a key position who's career could be over any time.    Would be big salary cap hit if the did release him now though so just won't happen.  Tend to think they'll just roll the dice with it.

It's now one more big hole to fill over the next offseason or two.

Yea the cap hit blows, voiding the guarantees doesn't change the cap hit? Just so ####### mad at the stupidity of these guys. Might as well go all out and roid the #### up if you're gonna be so dumb with supplements.

This sucks about Lane. Didn't he start out as a QB then TE? Must have to use a lot of vitamin S to keep his weight up. I thought this team had an outside #### at 9-7. Not now. Sleeves is gonna get crushed.

I swear it's only in Philly that this stuff happens. Kind of reminds me of when Shaun Andrews went from being awesome to crazy over night.

I actually kind of buy his excuse of being told the substance was ok. He still needs to be more aware of what's what but I don't think he purposely took something he knew was banned. The guy already got hit once and is on the watchlist so to speak. He knows he's getting tested again at some point. He also knows his money is on the line. Can't see him risking that for a slight edge.

It's only in Philly that CLEVELAND fleeces you in a trade that nets them the first pick in the subsequent draft that's held in your home town. You can't make this up. :lmao:

Maybe, but whatever.  When you've already been suspended for PEDs once, probably best not to try and walk the edge of the line a few months after the team proactively hands you a bunch of money.

Without Johnson the line goes from middling to weak.  His actions here have hurt the team and himself much more than whatever marginal advantage this supplement / substance might have given him.

Cleveland didn't fleece us though and if any team can blow 2 top 10 picks its them lol

The draft in our hometown thing kills me...like the league is trolling us or something

Pretty early to be determining the winner of the trade, They traded for a franchise quarterback they don't even plan on playing until next year. If he turns out to be a Geno Smith, they blew it. If he turns out to be a Ben Roethlisberger, it's the trade of the decade.

Johnson "says he took an amino acid that was approved but tested positive for peptide. Fighting it as well as company. You're responsible for what goes in your body but he insists it was approved. Waiting on B sample."

What exactly does it mean though?  There is a product (we will call Product A) and that product contains peptide?  And was Lane told that Product A was ok or that peptide was ok?  If it is the former, then how do they know that he didn't just take something else that contains peptide?  Or he was told that peptide itself was ok and that is what he got popped for?  If the latter and he has proof, it seems reasonable.  If the former, I'm not sure about the chances.

My understanding is that the peptide is banned, but the specific product he was taking is approved.  He got a bad batch, or the company he got it from changed the formula to add this ingredient without his knowledge.  Or at least, that is what he is arguing.

This should be simple to verify. If he still has any of the product he was taking, it should be fairly trivial to test it for the banned substance.

Sounds like a tape recording of every single athlete who gets busted for steroids. I wouldn't count on seeing him till November.

Ok, but I mean then it's just his word that that is all he is taking.  Who could ever prove it?  You can't really test for a specific product, right?  Therefore, and mind you, I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night, I don't see how there is any legally sound grounds for appeal.

Yep....the only real thing this appears to have proved was that Lane is an idiot.

To be fair, it is certainly possible that he is feeling the truth.  In fact, I would probably lean that way just because it honestly makes more sense.  I'm just saying that from the way I assume the rule is written, it is unlikely he can prove it after the fact.

Well, it's impossible to prove a negative.  If the banned substance shows up in the approved product, then there's no way to know if he was taking additional doses of the banned substance.  If the approved product is free of whatever it was that he tested positive for, then he's SOL.

This Thursday.....the world will be introduced to a red haired man named Carson Wentz...the man who will one day be the greatest Eagles QB the world has known since the likes of Randall Cunningham and Ron Jaworski.

Get ready...the world will never be the same.

I thought McNabb was better than both those guys. So what are you saying?
