Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

I know I have been labled pessimistic but tell me exactly what there is that's positive? Year after year the same bull sh@@ lazy, unpreparedness shows up. Now you add them being a soft team on top of that. Where does it start?? Apparently no one on that team is held accountable. And the most mind boggling comment in history by Tomlin at halftime yesterday when asked about Ben's performance...." I thought he was solid"....really, so was Tomlin attending a different NFL game yesterday. Dallas may rush for 300 next week, be prepared for another loooonnngg afternoon.
Maybe he meant a solid piece of poop?

No disagreement with anything written here.  However, from the optimistic point of view, there are still a bunch of reasons to be positive.

  1. Awful division that the Steelers should still win.
  2. On paper, their roster is that of a playoff team.  Lets hope they get it together.
  3. Ben
  4. Ben
  5. Ben
If/when they get into the playoffs, anything can and will happen.  If they stay healthy, they'll be fine.

Pessimistic view:  They came into this season with so much promise I was hoping for an entire season of them being a good/great team and in the discussion as a Super Bowl contender - which they clearly aren't that at this time.  Them being a playoff team on paper is not very fulfilling given the way they ended last year and the expectations coming into this season.

Injuries and suspensions can be the explanation for why they aren't a dominant SB contender I guess, and losing at BAL, MIA, and PHI and at home to NE wouldn't be so bad if they didn't suck-out-load in each of those games.  Dominant SB contenders can have bad games and even get destroyed on occasion... but this is just happening too frequently to this team.

I understand making the playoffs is the first step in winning a SB, but making the playoffs and getting steamrolled in round one isn't very appealing.  I'm usually neutral to optimistic, but man it's hard to be that way after them getting crushed so frequently, and being so ill-prepared for a bad BAL team.

Until I see some indication that this team can be better prepared to play on the road, I have to also take the pessimistic view.  If they make the playoffs, they now will have to go on the road at some point against a superior team.  I have absolutely 0 reason to believe that this team could beat the Patriots in Foxboro (or even the Raiders on the road).  But there are still 8 games left so maybe a miracle will happen

Yep there is still a long way to go.  We'll just have to let it play out and hope they figure it out.  It isn't looking too good though.   I think my biggest disappointment has been the play of the offensive line.  Pretty poor play from what is supposed to be a position of strength.

I mentioned it in the game thread but my biggest concern is that I don't believe Tomlin has any rhyme or reason going for 2 after the first TD.  I think he just feels it's innovative so "#### it let's be different".  When the team is fully healthy, maybe it works.  This offense just isn't good enough this year.  Probably cost them the game today.

And now the only path to the playoffs is winning the division.  Thankfully it's a pathetic division.  Don't think it matters though because this is just a bad team.

I don't think going for two on the opening TD was the wrong call nor did it cost them the game. The defense cost them the game. Any time the O puts up 30 points, that has to be a win. Pin the blame on Tomlin and on Butler, sure, and also blast Tomlin for going for two when it is 12-3 (inexcusably bad) but the opening PAT try was not the killer.

While I agree that going for the PAT on the first TD didn't cost them the game I agree with Fred that there apparently is no logic behind Tomlin's decisions other than a gut feeling.

As far as the defense goes it absolutely cost them the game this week although last week it was the offense that laid a turd.   Had the Steelers offense (or special teams) played a little better last week they would have beat Baltimore.  Likewise had the defense played a little better of a game yesterday they probably beat Dallas.    Tomlin needs to get all three units putting forth consistent efforts before things are going to get better.

Next week they have the Browns which should be the medicine they need but the game is on the road which has been disastrous.  Hopefully the 4-game losing streak has removed the notion that they can just show up and win from this team.  This is absolutely a must-win game as are the rest of the division games.

As someone who used to bet, I can safely say that the Steelers are the one team whose games I would stay away from him every time.  You just never know how good or bad they are going to look.  As a fan of the sport, seeing all of that talent on offense go to waste on a 4-5 team is a real shame.

Agreed.  They are massive underachievers this year.

Well gotta thank the Giants for keeping Cincinnati from taking a step forward.   The Steelers are extremely lucky to be in this division this year.

Ravens schedule:  @DAL,  CIN,  MIA,  @NE,  PHI,  @PIT,  @CIN

Bengals schedule:  BUF,  @BAL,  PHI,  @CLE,  PIT,  @HOU,  BAL

Steelers schedule:  @CLE,  @IND,  NYG,  @BUF,  @CIN,  BAL,  CLE

Looking at the schedules above I think 9 wins is going to take the division, possibly 8 if all three teams continue to stink.   Baltimore is on top but that is a pretty brutal schedule.  Based on how they've been playing I can't see them winning more than 4 games unless they make a dramatic improvement.  Heck, 3 games might even be pushing it.

The Bengals, despite their record, are not playing all that badly but they'll need to go 5-2 to be in contention because of that tie.

If the Steelers weren't such a poor road team they would be the odds on favorite to win the division.  They certainly should be able to beat any of the teams left on their schedule but they have shown they are more than capable of losing to any of them as well.

I can't say it will be a fun ride the rest of the way but the division is so bad it should be interesting...

Those two completely unnecessary personal fouls at the end were absolutely infuriating.
Those drove me crazier than the 2PT plays ever could.  100% mental mistakes.  Totally selfish, lackadaisical crap, and #### like that keeps happening.

Make no mistake, this defense is ridiculously bad.  In fact "bad" may be too tame.  Yeah, I get that they've been dealing with injuries, but the fact that a 100-year-old James Harrison is STILL the best pass rush threat on the team by a mile is a BIG problem.   As absolutely terrible as the defense is, the undisciplined, selfishly retahhhhded penalties that wind up happening every week exacerbate its flaws even further.

Wow it was brutal listening to Tomlins press conference. I had to turn it off after a few minutes. One of his genius statements was he thought they improved in the penalties area..... are you kidding me!!!! This folks is why they are 4-5, plain & simple. He holds no one accountable & these players don't give a sh@@.

And.....I didn't catch what the injury is but they are saying Cam heyward could be out possibly rest of season. Going for 2nd MRI....good night, sweet dreams

camhey97I would like to thank everyone who has been in my corner this season. It pains me to say that I will not get to continue playing this season. My role will change as I can not play but it will not change the goals the team has set out. My support for this team will only grow and I look forward in watching this team grow and fight on. Hate being on the sideline but there is a greater plan taking place. My patience will be tested but I look forward to 2017. My hand will remain in the pile no matter what!

So Baltimore is going to win the division at 8-8 this year.  Amazing how much of a down year this is in the AFC North.  I'm used to this being one of the stronger divisions year in and year out.

The loss of Heyward does suck.  But honestly, while I think he is a good player, I do think he is a bit overrated by many.  I think he is a good player on a lousy defense.  He stands out because of that.  From word of mouth/media, apparently he is a very good leader as well.  So that's good I guess.  This is to take nothing away from him.  Again, I think he's a good player.  But he's just a good player on a bad defense.  The loss will hurt.

I think it is more likely the Bengals win the division at 8-7-1 than the Ravens winning at 8-8 and I sure don't see them winning 9 games.  They'll be the underdogs in all of their road games and their home games are the Bengals, Dolphins and Eagles.  They'll be lucky to win 8 games.

I understand the doom and gloom but the Steelers have 4 games with AFC North opponents that we all agree stink.  The Colts are 4-5 as-is Buffalo.  The Giants are the only decent team remaining on their schedule and that is a home game where the Steelers have played pretty well this season.  Assuming no injuries to Ben, AB or Bell they have the offense that should be able to put up points at least.

I am not predicting a division win but all of the teams in the AFC North blow and someone has to win it.

I can still see the Steelers winning the division because the AFC North is so shaky and 8-8 can win the division.  But I can also see the Steelers losing to the Browns because of the usual Tomlin way of playing down to their opponents.   Hell how many times did you see the Browns at their worst either destroy them or lose by less than a touchdown.  I know I would DEFINITELY put money on Cleveland if it is more than 10 points.

The only encouraging thing I have about this weeks game is the complete desperation that they have.

That and Ben's utter, complete, ownership of Paul Brown's darlings.  Anything could happen though.

Sucks about Heyward, but they were beyond terrible and not getting a pass rush with him.  I expect they will continue to do both without too.  They will win as many games as they can keep their foot on the pedal on O and not do something ######ed from a personal foul standpoint.  So, I'd say over/under of 3 more wins, but I'd probably take the under.

While I agree this has been true historically and while I don't think all that highly of the Dolphins, Eagles or Ravens this year you have to concede that all three of these teams have a better record than the Steelers.  I am not sure that you can make the argument the Steelers are playing down to opponents when those teams are higher in the standings.

My take is that due to sloppy play, injuries and a defense without star power, this team is just not as good as we thought they were.

Having said that the Steelers have not lost to a team that currently has a losing record, absolutely dominated the one bad team they played (Jets), handled the Bengals fairly easily, completely demolished a 7-2 team (Chiefs), had a convincing road victory over a 5-3-1 team (Redskins) , was competitive against the best team in the AFC (Patriots) despite playing a backup QB and were 30 seconds from beating the best team in the NFL (Cowboys).   Add to that the fact they play in a bad division and have the easiest remaining schedule of the teams in the division.

They still have a very good shot at the postseason.  Of course it all has to start this week against the Browns...

1st place!

A divisional road game no matter who the opponent is not easy. It was touch and go for a while but kudos to them for seeing it though. Especially tough when the wind is taking away the deep throw and the opponent is so desperate to win a game.

Need to stay focused and somehow win these next two games. If they can do that, the remaining schedule is not that daunting.

Big   to Bell, Tuitt and Burns

Well not quite in first place yet.

Well a win is a win.  And the division continues to stink.
Agreed.   It wasn't a dominating performance it got the job done.   I fully expected the Ravens to lose to Dallas but was surprised to see the Bengals lose to the Bills at home.  The Bengals are hurting too with Gio done for the season and if Green is our for an extended period of time.

For the Steelers, the offense better be clicking on Thursday night cause Indy is likely to hang 30 points up.

Well it's a road game (not against Cleveland) so I don't have a lot of hope.

Seems like an eternity ago, doesn't it?  I shudder to think what would happen to the Steelers D if they played the Redskins on the road next week.  That offense is clicking on all cylinders.
Agreed.  It just shows you how quickly things can change in the NFL.   Hopefully another receiver will step up and take some of the double/triple coverage from AB and the offense will start living up to it's potential cause we're going to need it this week.

Steelers next 4 - @Indianapolis / NY Giants / @Buffalo / @Cincinnati

Baltimore next 4 - Cincinnati / Miami / @New England / Philadelphia

I think either Miami or Philadelphia will beat the Ravens in Baltimore.  If so, they're likely 2-2 over the next 4.  If we win 2 of the next 4, that sets up a Christmas Day showdown for the division with both teams 7-7.  That game is in Pittsburgh.  This is still doable.  If we can beat the Giants at home, that means we only need to win 1 of the three road games.  Indy and Buffalo are solid but not spectacular and Cincinnati is imploding.

Exactly the sort of game this particular vintage of Steeler team will find a way to lose.  No Green?  No Bernard?  No problem!  Rex Burkhead will score a couple TDs while the DBs don't bother covering Brandon LaFell.
