Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

Yep a safety. Was miscast at CB a lot in college.  He is an athlete first.  Hope he rips it up on ST.

Not super happy right now.  Doing breathing exercises.

3 years from now this draft could be amazing, 1 year from now I see our secondary being just as bad as last year.

Hey, if nothing else, they're addressing the biggest need area on the team. Big picture, that can't be a bad thing. Both of these guys have crazy upside, I just question their ability to help now. With our SB window closing, I wanted immediate aid. But I'm not going to cry too hard over getting 2 DBs.

Now I hope Hargrave falls to 89.

At CBS with Rob Rangs instant update on the draft tracker...

Sean Davis | CB/S, MarylandHeight: 6-1   Weight: 201Love this pick. Love this kid. The Steelers get a safety with range who can cover and tackle. Secondary is fixed. A+.

One of only five A+'s so far.

309 tackles, 5 picks at Maryland.

5 forced fumbles last season.

Billings has been dinged by area scouts for being a bit immature and too close to a crew of his friends (he grew up in Waco, too) who might not have his best interests in mind. So a team that is willing to overlook some of the maturity issues and chalk it up to his young age might be getting a great player in the making if they're patient.

I wonder if this has something to do with Billings still being available. Maybe he interviewed terribly, that's something that teams would be privy to that we and the draftniks may not be. Also possible that teams see him as a pure 0 tech, which is a skill set quickly falling out of favor in today's NFL. I disagree wholeheartedly but again, they're getting paid millions to make these calls while I'm sitting here in my boxer shorts eating mint chocolate chip ice cream and farting.

Who would trade for the Raiders draft right now?

K Joseph (S) / Jihad Ward (DE) / Shilique Calhoun (OLB)

Even though I now live in the East Bay, I'm getting a little perturbed with Reggie McKensie right about now.

It's not that I'm dead set against these two picks, drafting on upside, it's just that we haven't "coached up" DBs worth a #### for a long time.  Lake and Tomlin have too much faith in their coaching abilities when it comes to these guys.  I'd rather have some guys that are ready to start this year considering Ben is probably only worth another 3, maybe 4 years.

It's how the draft works.  Same reason the Browns and Titans swapped in round 2 and the Browns went first.

If teams are tied for record, the first round is based on tie breakers.  After that, they rotate.  So, it went PIT, SEA, GB.  Then SEA, GB, PIT.  Then GB, PIT, SEA.  And so on.  So most teams have a similar record to someone else, those that don't keep their position.  For example, Denver is always last and Carolina second to last (not including complementary picks).

Does this make sense?
Understand perfectly, i just dont remember it working like this.   I thought that once the draft order was set, it was repeated round after round with compensatory picks plugged in after rd3.

I can relate to your concerns. It's probably worth mentioning, however, that the guys Lake and Tomlin have been coaching up aren't as talented as these guys. And the reality is that nearly every DB ready to come in and start from day one is not sticking around to the 25th pick. Every team wants those guys.

Big reason I didn't want DBs early, and the ones we took seem more project than player.

The fact that Billings continues to fall shows that some people had way too high a value on him.
No, what it shows is that he probably flunked his interviews.

Gotta be.

I know Mean Joe was sent to have dinner with him after they met with him.  Maybe he used the wrong fork, or something.

Strictly as a S, I don't mind the Davis pick that much, really.

I know one of the Steelers beat types was all over his jock this draft season.  May have been Wexell.

When I watched him, his coverage recognition was sub-standard.  He hits pretty hard for a CB but only average for a S and MANY times goes for the knockout and doesn't wrap up.  Takes bad angles too.  I think he could be a decent cover corner but will likely always be a liability as a last line of defense.

A poor man's Darian Thompson.

Everyone seems to think it will be Hargrave for the next Steelers pick. Like this draft.

Billings might have a knee issue.

I'll take that.

Would prefer more of a two-gap guy to man our 3-4 base, but he's a solid pick here.

Fackrell was one of my "pets" from this group.  He's pretty good at everything.  Probably a better rusher than given credit for because he was dropped into coverage as much as he was.  He'd have been a pretty good get.

I don't mind small school guys if they dominate their level of competition. He did. Went to the Senior Bowl and shined there against top competition as well. He's a guy I hoped they'd pick if they waited until round 3 or 4 to get line depth. Of course, I didn't expect Billings to still be on the board, but something is clearly very wrong with him, whether it's an injury that wasn't publicized or he's just a knucklehead.

I actually think he might best be deployed as a box safety. If they can coach him up to stop dipping his head when tackling, he'll be more consistent and he definitely brings the thump. They don't really need the centerfielder with Mitchell back there as much as they need a hitter in run support who can cover TEs. That's why Joseph and Neal were likely high on their draft board and I think Davis projects in that role better than he does as an outside corner.

Only thing I really have any 'problem' with about this draft is that every guy so far is some kind of project right now.

Not that worried about Hargrave as a "3-4 base" guy since the Steelers pretty much run the Nickel a ton now.  Not sure the 3-4 is even their "base" any more, if we're counting how many snaps it's run vs a subpackage with an even/alternate front.

I'm more worried about his stubby arms, but they clearly haven't stopped him from blowing up plays in the backfield yet.  He should certainly be able to help push the interior of the pocket.

Me too. They seem to be drafting for the future, which is very Steelers-like but for the first time in a decade, we're in a position where the future is now.

He absolutely would be.  Have to believe this is what they're thinking.  Probably hoping he can do stuff Shamarko was supposed to do, but hasn't.

^^^

If he learns to put his chest on somebody and not the top of his shoulder.  May want to use his arms too.
